______________________

Today I'd like you to present my boyfriend's current team. Before you may ask why he doesn't write this RMT by himself - he doesn't have a Smogon account and his English is horrid -even worse than mine. He does indeed play for a longer than me, but I'm more active and I'm better than him - women are just way brighter - *hides*. Anyway his top rating with this team was like 1350, which was his best up until now. I believe that he could get a higher rating with this team, but he hasn't enough experience and well he's regulary winning against people with a 1550+ rating, but often fails against teams that contains rare Pokémon, even when this team is horrible. In my opinion this team is the best team he made til today and it's a step forward for him to become a good battler. So, rate and critisize this team. The issue is that my boyfriend want to get tips from other gamers and not just me.

As you may noticed already, this team is focused on a Empoleon sweep, to specify on a SubPetaya-sweep. I think nobody disagrees that Empoleon is one of the best late-game sweepers and even the best special late-game sweeper. This team should enable Empoleon everything he needs to set-up and sweep. You may ask what this team differs from other Empoleon-teams? I don't know, but he made this team by himself, at least I can't imagine that he copied it and he told me that he made it (he's really honest).

Team creation:
I didn't make this team, my boyfriend made this team almost alone - I'm really proud of him. So I can't really tell you how this team was made, but you can really think how it was made:
#1
dpicon395.png
- Your late-game sweeper. SubPetaya w/ Surf+GK
#2
dpicon407.png
- Empoleon needs/benefits TS; lead
#3
dpicon248.png
- GK > Ice Beam on Empo -> Pursuit away ghosts/latias. Luring in Scizor for setting up the Empo sweep
#4
dpicon260.png
- SR + Roar.
#5
dpicon479.png
- Glue, beats many threats + Reflect
#6
dpicon469.png
- He's awesome, can clean everything Empoleon can't kill, loves TS.

A closer look at this team

Roserade () @

<Toxic Spikes>
<Sleep Powder>
<Leaf Storm>
<HP Fire>

Roserade is one of the most useful and best leads in my opinion. Since Roserade has become popular, he has become one of my favorite leads of all time. My boyfriend took her as a lead, because of TS-support, which is very important for this team. Roserade has the advantage that she can sleep slower leads and hit faster taunt leads hard with Leaf Storm. HP Fire is for coverage. After Roserade sleeps a lead, she is free to lay down TS. Usually my boyfriends attacks faster Taunt leads and sleeps all slower leads (even Hippo/Swampi). This way you can deal with all leads beside Infernape, which Swampert can beat, because most Infernape leads don't wear GK.

The EVs are typical for a suicide lead: max spA/spe for hitting hard and max speed. I suggested to take 32 spA into HP, for not getting 2HKO's by Gross' BP, but he doesn't want to accept this. PS: Anyone saying that Toxic Spikes are bad, because most Pokémon are not hit by it: They hit all the Pokémon that need to be hit, because this team doesn't care 'bout levitators and steels. Also, grounded poison PKMN (Roserade, Tentacruel) are rare and my boyfriend has Rotom for blocking Rapid Spin.

Tyranitar () @

Adamant - Sand Stream

<Crunch>
<Pursuit>
<Earthquake>
<Stone Edge>

No doubt, Tyranitar has awesome stats, movepool and ability and a horrid typing. OK, SS boosts spDef, because of rock typing. Anyway, this should be kinda a bulky offensive Tyranitar. You have the ability to hit hard and take hits. Tyranitar was choosen for this team, because it effectively eliminates Latias with Pursuit and Crunch and still has good coverage with Earth Quake + Stone Edge. Also, Tyranitar lures in Scizor, because of Steel weakness (and Bug and Fighting weakness..). It's worth sacrificing Tyranitar to a CB-Scitor, just for being able to set up on him.

My boyfriend wanted to take Tyranitar hits from both sides, so he maximied HP and still hit hard (-> max atk + adamant). He thinks it's unimportant to invest into speed, because Tyranitar is slow. I suggested to scarf his Tyranitar (along with changing the EV spread) for effectively killing Gengar and generally revenge killing, but he decided against it, because he said that Scarf-Tyranitar is a set-up fodder for so many dangerous threats like Salamence, Gyara, Lucario, etc.) and he looses so much of his bulk.

Swampert () @

260.png

<Earthquake>
<Ice Beam>
<Stealth Rock>
<Roar>

Yes, this is the lead set, actually it's also usefull in midgame. My boyfriend took him, because he needed a Pokémon that can use SR and phaze dangerous Pokémon away. He thinks that Swampert is the best to do that, because of Swampert's good typing and stats. The combination of IB+EQ allows Swampert to get rid of some Pokémon that may want to set-up on Swampert, like Salamence. For that reason she hasn't any water STAB.

My boyfriend is really happy with this Swampert, because so many teams are unprepared for Swampert. Along with TS support and a TS-absorber, Swampert has a lot of fun. Also, Swampert provides a useful electric immunity, but it isn't like Tyranitar and Rotom can't take electric attacks....

Rotom-h (o) @

Bold - Leviate

rotomh.png

<Thunderbolt>
<Shadow Ball>
<Reflect>
<Will-o-Wisp>

Here it is: Rotom-h. Rotom ends up in like every team my boyfriend and I make. You shouldn't be surprised, because Rotom-h is just a fantastic Pokémon. He furfills many roles in this team: Tanking certain Pokémon, crippling with W-o-W and hitting suprisingly hard with STAB Tunderbolt + Shadow Ball. Also, you shouldn't forget that Rotom bravely protects holy Toxic Spikes.

You may ask: Is WoW not uneffective with Toxic Spikes? No, it isn't. It still cripples steel Pokémon and levitating Pokémon. Along with Reflect, Rotom protects my team from physical attacks and yeah, Reflect + WoW will make physical attackers useless. It's awesome to see Scizors hitting you for under 5%. We never ever had considered to use Overheat on Rotom-h. Why? It almost always will let our team in a bad situation. -2spA is a downfall on Rotom-h and we would need to either give up Reflect or WoW, but both moves are useful together.

The only thing I don't like is the lack of recovery. Tyranitar's SS will wear down Rotom-h after some time. I often wish that Rotom-h would have a fourth moveslot just for Pain Split.

Empoleon () @

395.png

<Surf>
<Grass Knot>
<Agility>
<Substiute>

The star of this team. Everybody knows this set. With it's 13 immunities Empoleon can easily set up Agility, sub three times and sweep. Empoleon's counters should be dead by this time, or are beaten with the help of Toxic Spikes. Grass Knot is chosen over Ice Beam, because it's easier to deal with the Pokémon that are beaten with the help of Ice Beam, than the myriads of bulky water you may encounter.

The EVs allow my boyfriend to activate Petaya Berry after 3 subs and sweep with max power. I hope that I don't need to tell you how powerful Torrent boosted STAB +1 Surf is.

Yanmega () @
Bag_Leftovers_Sprite.png

Modest - Speed Boost
104/0/0/252/0/152

469.png

<Protect>
<Bug Buzz>
<Air Slash>
<HP Ground>

Yes, this may be a weird choice. Where is the rapid-spinner? Are you serious? My boyfriend is, and I agree him that Yanmega is a great choice for the last slot. Even without SR, Yanmega won't survive many hits. It's main job is either to prepare the Empoleon sweep by sweeping many threats to Empoleon, mainly Latias and Celebi, while luring in Scizor and other priority users. Also, Yanmega can come after Empoleon died to kill the things that are still there, like Latias, which Tyranitar may failed to kill or Celebi.

My boyfriend always tell me that Yanmega gets more kills that Empoleon and in fact he is the hidden star of that team. He benefits as much from Toxic Spikes like Empoleon and has better coverage and an easier set-up. Bug Buzz and Air Slash are obviously STAB moves, whith the latter having a good chance to flinch. HP Ground is for coverage and for killing Heatran, Jirachi, Lucario, Metagross, Magnezone, etc. You may ask why I need Protect, but it's really essential. Without Protect the whole team may fail to Infernape. Yanmega kills Infernape with Air Slash and can outspeed him with Protect. Leftovers is for fighting against SS and for not getting killed by SR (2x) + SS.

I often suggested to replace Swampert for Starmie and replace one move on Tyranitar for SR. This would give him an easier time against Infernape and would spin away SR for Yanmega and Spikes for the whole team, but he thinks it's a waste of space.

______

Rate, Critisize, Flame, Discuss, whatever. Don't forget it's not my team, but that of my boyfriend. I may be later add a threat list / a list how Roserade deals against most leads and my teams against most Pokémon.

Thank you

Solid team, but SD Luke can really screw you. After a single SD, Adamant Lucario with Crunch (the usual one) OHKOes everything on your team, excluding Swampert, but there still is a chance that +2 LO boosted Close Combat OHKOes, which becomes certain after taking Stealth Rock damage. What seems reassuring, though, is that most of your team members won't give him the chance to set up. If he DOES manage to set up somehow, it's pretty much gg. The best solution would be to give your Tyrannitar a Choice Scarf, enabling it to outrun and OHKO Lucario with EQ. It also allows you to outspeed Gengar and Latias and OHKO with Crunch, which is pretty neat. Now, I know that Scarf-tar can become set up bait, but in fact most things that try to set up on Tyranitar can be countered by another member on your team. Salamence fails to OHKO Swampert with Outrage, while Swampert OHKOes with Ice Beam. Gyarados is pretty much the same, with the exception that Swampert Roars. For Lucario, you can use Roserade as death fodder and go back to T-tar and KO Lucario. Otherwise, you can sacrifice your most useless Pokemon and follow the same route (EQ with Tyranitar). The prefered moveset for Scarf-tar is this:

Tyranitar @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Sand Stream
Nature: Hasty
EVs:240 Att/252 Spe/16 SpA
- Crunch
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Fire Blast

That's not the standard Choice Scarf Tyranitar set, but Ice Beam coverage is already provided by Swampert, who can easily destroy Hippowdon and Gliscor on his own. 16 EV's in Special Attack ensure that even a specially defensive Skarmory will be always 2HKO'd by Fire Blast, while Scizor and Foretress are roasted anyway. Stone Edge for fliers (Gyarados, Zapdos) and a good STAB, Crunch for a second STAB and for Ghosts and Latias and Earthquake for Lucario, Infernape (baring priority users), Heatran, non-Scarf Jirachi and stuff.
Pretty sturdy team nonetheless, props for using Yanmega.

Roserade vs. the 15 most used leads:

  • dpiconani482.gif
    - Problematic, as they outspeed me and have Taunt. My boyfriend usually use LS, as they (hopefully) Taunt and than HP Fire for the kill. Obviously they 2HKO me with Fire Blast / Psychic.
  • dpiconani376.gif
    - Unluckily they can 2HKO with Bullet Punch, but my boyfriend doesn't want to invest in HP. My boyfriend usually tries to sleep it and hopes it doesn't wear Lum Berry...
  • dpiconani260.gif
    - My boyfriend usually uses sleep the first turn, as most Swampert will switch and it's generally a bad idea to use LS against the incoming Scizor. Otherwise it's an easy match-up.
  • dpiconani385.gif
    - Usually sleep the first turn. Either it will IH, Trick or SR the first turn. After Trick / IH switch to Swampert.
  • dpiconani142.gif
    - Leaf Storm + HP Fire for the 2HKO. Most Aeros will taunt Roserade and SR on the dying turn.
  • dpiconani392.gif
    - Switch to Swampert and pray that he doesn't have Grass Knot, luckily most leads doesn't have it...
  • dpiconani485.gif
    - Sleep the first turn. You will outspeed Heatran and I never ever saw a Lum Berry Heatran lead (-> sleep a second time).
  • dpiconani248.gif
    - Pray that they do not wear a Lum Berry.
  • dpiconani472.gif
    - Pray that they aren't Jolly max speed and taunting the first turn. Usually Sleep, when they taunt -> LS twice, as most are idiotic enough to roost the second LS.
  • dpiconani235.gif
    - Sleep the first turn, because you will outspeed them without a Scarf. Trick-versions can be problematic.
  • dpiconani291.gif
    - Go to Swampert and laugh at Ninjask.
  • dpiconani450.gif
    - Look at how Roserade deals with Swampert
  • dpiconani149.gif
    - Sleep it and pray it doesn't wear a Lum Berry (or switching into Tyranitar)
  • dpiconani437.gif
    - Sleep it. Do whatever you want

Threats to this team:
dpiconani392.gif
- Variants lacking GK are beaten by Swampert, but the only way to really deal with it is revenge kill it with Yanmega. Toxic Spikes usually take it out.
dpiconani373.gif
- It can set up on Roserade. The only way to beat is Swampert at full health, otherwise he can only revenge safely with Yanmega.
dpiconani448.gif
- The only way to set-up safely on his team without loosing a big bunch of health is to set-up on lead-Roserade at -2. The bad thing is that it destroys his team, killing all of his members (and outspeeding). He can only beat it by playing around it.

Stall teams with a TS absorber or a RS that can deal with Rotom-H.

Your team has trouble with Dragon Dance Salamence. It can easily set-up a Dragon Dance on Roserade and Empoleon and can cause severe damage to your team if Swampert is only slightly weakened. Yanmega only wishes it can do something, as the standard DD Mence will always outspeed a +1 Yanmega. This is made more of a problem by the fact your only Steel-type is your late-game sweeper. So this means Salamence is a problem regardless whether or not it runs Dragon Dance, since Empoleon is your only reliable switch-in to Draco Meteor, it can't touch Salamence back and Salamence can easily kill it with Earthquake.

In order to alleviate this problem, I suggest replacing your Yanmega with a Scizor.

Scizor @ Choice Band | Adamant
162 HP / 180 Atk / 168 SpD
Bullet Punch / U-turn / Superpower / Quick Attack

Scizor makes an excellent switch-in to random Draco Meteors and can pick off many Dragon-types with Bullet Punch. It can also revenge kill Dragon Dance Salamence if it reaches around 60% of its health, a target easily achieved with Stealth Rock, Life Orb and sandstorm. It fills Yanmega's role of taking down Latias and Celebi, plus the role of Scizor luring is just as well done by Tyranitar.

Of course, this does leave you a bit open to Fighting types like Infernape and Lucario. I have two changes to suggest. First off, replace Swampert with a Life Orb Starmie.

Starmie @ Life Orb | Timid
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hydro Pump / Thunderbolt / Ice Beam / Recover

Starmie is an excellent sweeper for this team, since its primary checks, Blissey and Latias are taken care of by Toxic Spikes and Tyranitar / Scizor. Once they're gone, Starmie can rip apart many teams. It's also a good Infernape check, since it resists its STAB moves and doesn't take much damage from Grass Knot. With Swampert gone, use Stealth Rock over Crunch on Tyranitar. Latias and Celebi usually switch-out against Tyranitar, so with Pursuit only, they'll be denied a second switch-in. To take care of Lucario, change Rotom's moveset to a Choice Scarf Rotom.

Rotom-h @ Choice Scarf | Timid
252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Thunderbolt / Shadow Ball / Overheat / Trick

Choice Scarf Rotom is a nice choice in revenge killing Lucario, outspeeding it whilst being immune to Extremespeed. It's also a nice check for Dragon Dance Gyarados. If you're wondering about the excessive investment in HP, this allows Rotom to fufill the defensive role it used to play to an extent, while getting important KOs.

Good luck with your team.
