[OU] Platinum Update SS Stall

Hello.

After observing how Offensive playing became more and more popular I tried to work on using a Defensive style (I was a bit bored from "Offensive Bulk"). I must say that Obi was a huge inspiration to my team, I have 3 pokes like him, added a bit more offense so I could perform a sweep if needed.

At a Glance: As you can see I have 4 Bulky Pokes. 2 of them are Physically Deffensive, one is the "best" at Special Defense and a potential physical/special wall (during a SS). We also have a quick Special Sweper/Revenge Killer and at the very end a versatile pokemon, having a wide movepool its movepool is rather unknown to the opponent until it performs a move, in this case is a MixedSweeper. There is no member weak to Stealth Rock, 1 is immune to Spikes and T-Spikes. There are 2 Status Absorbers (Natural Cure Pokemon). A Wish supporter.

hippowdon.png

Hippodown:
Cat Toilet (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP/20 Atk/152 Def/86 SDef
Relaxed nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Stealth Rock
- Roar
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge

Description: We all know the famous hippo, he has becomed such a great lead and has lost its popularity with all those Lead Apes, Gross, Azelf and Froslass in the UU enviorment. Hippodown has one purpose on the game, and he performs it well: Set the rocks ASP, and of course the Sandstorm which activates byt he Ability itself. Hippodown has enough bulk to get any attack, so I can always count on him to pu those rocks, eliminating Sashes (Sandstorm does the same thing but some guys are inmmune to SS so yeah...anyways dealing some damage when entering the battlefield is sure good!).

Another job that Hippodown does great is Phaze those Ninjask leads, SS + Stealth Rock should deal with them since they can't switch in more than twice. Earthquake is a nice STAB move on Hippo it deals a good amount of damage on those Gross Leads, Stone Hedge deals with Levitating and Flying pokemons that Earthquake cant hit such as Azelf and the not so common Zapdos Lead.

As you can see there is a lack of Slack Off, there is a reason, all I really need Hippo to do is set the rock and the SS, after that he become somewhat of a filler so I dont really mind if he faints or not EQ and Stone Edge deals as much damage as they can before Hippo faints.

skarmory.png

Skarmory:
SteelFenix (F) @ Shed Shell
Ability: Keen Eye
EVs: 252 HP/64 Atk/176 Def/18 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Spikes
- Whirlwind
- Drill Peck
- Roost

Description: Skarmory basically continues the work of Hippo, it becomes the team's Physical Tank and continues to set the Entry Hazards, this time the Spikes, I just love this hazard since its the only one dealing enough damage to Lucario and sometimes Ludicolo.

Aside from setting those Spikes, Skarmory deals with Heracross which happens to be a huge problem to SS teams, a Drill Peck with the providen EV's deals about 85% damage to the Satndard CS Herca adding the Spikes, SR and SS damage it takes the pesky bug down.

The Speed EV's allow me to outspeed other Skarmorys trying to Whirlwind me away, talking about Whirlwind it helps me to Phaze and somehow deal some damage from the Hazards.

Now, the item. God Bless Shed Shell all magnezoen try to come in and kill my Skarmory with their STAB Thunderbolt while Shed Sell will allow me to “scape” from Magnezone’s trap or Magnet Pull. Roost is somewhat of a filler, I dont use it that much since one of the team members happens to heal them most of the time, is there any other suggestion you could give me?

blissey.png

Blissey:
Macho (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 86 HP/252 Def/92 SAtk/80 SDef
Bold nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Toxic
- Wish
- Protect
- Flamethrower/Thunderbolt

Description: Oh Common! We all know her, she is one of the most used pokes, she has gained the name of " The #1 Special Wall" in the whole metagame, we hate her but we also love her. Along with Skarmory they become a dynamic duo, they have a great synergy together and its a beginner strategy that still works with a pro lol.

She keeps up with the residual damage that the team members have been setting up, after a hundreth hits she wont die (if you use it properly) and as more pokes come in her way she will keep Poisoning them, that is her main role.

I chose Wish over Softboiled since some of the teams members will greatly appreciate the Healing including herself Toxic + Wish + Protect is a great way to Stall (again thanks to Obi).

For the final slot Im not sure yet, Flamethrower is nice since it hits those nasty Steel Types for SE damage, Thunderbolt does about the same since it hits for Neutral which is not bad but its not that great either. The difficult part from choosing is if I want to hit Heatran, he is not a problem I can predict an Explosion and just protect and same my ass from it or just Stall him out of PP (Fire Blast and Overheat both have a max. of 8 PP) then it will probably be game over for him, else than that if I can predict well Flamethrower with the afforded EV’s gives Blissey a nice chance to 1HKO Scizor which can become a problem wth its Toxic Inmmunity and the Bullet Punch which can get trough most of my pokes, or I could go with Thunderbolt which can hit Heatran, other Steels, Gengar, and a fellow Staller, Vaporeon. That water dog has the balls to come on Blissey's face and try to beat the Stalling Queen, that son of a bith I want T-Bolt so I can actually hit him, is it really worth using it?

cradily.png

Cradily:
IM OU (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Suction Cups
EVs: 252 HP/192 Def/66 SDef
Impish nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Toxic
- Recover
- Rock Slide
- Confuse Ray

Description: Its true, blissey is a bitch and can handdle lots of stuff by herself even kill some Uber pokemon without sweating but sometimes she can't do everything by herself there is when Cradily comes in play. Cradily has the right defenses on the right place, the +1 SpDef boost from SS is sure handy to become an all-around tank/wall.

Toxic + SS keep the strategy that Blissey was using. Now, keep in mind that just like Blissey Cradily can heal itself in an instant way god bless Game Freak for giving this hard plant Recover, healing 50% + Leftovers in one turn wall some sweepers not even reaching a 3HKO.

Rock Slide is somewhat of a filler for those Taunt users, it hits things such as Salamence, Dragonite, Zapdos, Weavile and Gyarados for SE damage which is really nice since most of them can't deal alot of damage to Cradily.

For the last slot Confuse Ray was somewhat of a filler and it has helped sometimes to stall better ebven though I was thinking on some things that I coudl replace this with maybe Energyball/Grass Knot to hit Swampert harder since he is an issue for the team in general or Stockpile for even further defenses.

starmie.png

Starmie:
Shuriken @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Modest nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Surf
- Thunderbolt
- Grass Knot
- Ice Beam/Trick

Description: Yeah, this is my Infernape counter, it used to be Magnezone until I kept being swept by MixNape. Not only that but Starmie deals with the Physical Tanks that the team sometimes has trouble taking down. Starmie also fill the role of the team's Revenge Killer to take down some weakened opponents. I know what you are thinking...Scarf on a Starmie, why? There is a reason, Bliss can stall Heatran out of PP but she can really kill it nor the other members with CS there is no way Heatran can ever outspeed me even if they also have a CS, Starmie is here to kill the Volcano pokemon all by herself Surf is able to take him down.

Surf over Hydro Pump since missing one shot can become a fatal mistake at the end of the match, it still keeps a nice amount of power taking STAB bonus in mind. Thunderbolt is great to deal with BulkyWater types including the aftermetioned Vaporeon and Gyarados (the later not being such an issue). GrassKnot is most notably for Swampert who tends to be hard to take down when running the ResTalk movesest being inmmune to Toxic.

For the final slot im not sure if I should go with trick which might annoy my opponent, being specific Bliss who is a common switch-in to any Special Attacker or if I should go with Ice Beam which has a great coverage dealing with Dragons like Salamence and Dragonite.

tyranitar.png

Tyranitar:
ChubbyLord (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 80 Atk/248 Spd/182 SAtk
Hasty nature (+Spd, -Def)
- Dragon Dance
- Crunch
- Flamethrower
- Ice Beam

Description: So far most of the team Stalls or is orinted on a Defensive way. It all ends right here. I've had some matches where Tyranitar is my last pokemon and my opponents has 6 or 5 pokemon left they are already typing: gg, but its not like that. One DD is enough to make my way through the team, since all the other teams it damage from SR, SS, Spikes, Stealth Rock, Confusion, Toxic or anyother kind of residual damage its easy for Tyranitar to kill about everything.

Crunch is my reliable STAB hitting for SE damage 2 of the most amazing Defensive Walls in the game, Dusknoir and Cresselia both are down with only one DD. I chose Crunch over Stone Edge as my STAB due to the chances that Stone Edge can miss and the amount of PP.

Flamethrower deals with Steel types like Metagross, and some Scizors (beware of the last one) also giving some lest important coverage on two of its main counters: Heracross and Lucario hope the last one doens thave Vcumm Wave.

Finally, Ice Beam. It breaks through all those dragons who try to DD on my face. Else than that it also take my main counter down: Gliscor, downside is that sometimes I miss due to the Sand Veil ability.

All I can say is this guy is amazing, it takes my opponent most of the time by surprise without having anything to stop it. The Dark/Fire/Ice is a nice coverage being walled by few pokemon like: Infernape and Heatran which take NVE from all of my moves. Reason why I have Starmie to deal with them.

A Quick Reminder:

If you've read so far thanks alot I really appreciate it, it took me awhile to write all of this stuff it probably has alot of mistakes (I suck at grammar lol) so if you could rate it as good as you could thanks, again. I will post a Threat List in a bit althought most of the threats are being mentioned through the post. If there is any huge grammar issue please let me know, and if you want to go and play around with the team just let me know how its doing! :)

I'm not able to give you a full rate due to the formatting problem but you should consider replacing Confuse Ray on Cradily with Grass Knot.
Grass Knot hits Marshtomp and other Water/Ground/Rock type pokemons considerably harder than Energy Ball (except for Vaporeon).
If not, then maybe Earthquake for more coverage.

But from what I read it seemed pretty good. I don't see how it is a Stall team, when T-Tar and Starmie are sweepers , but i like the idea of half sweep and half stall. I would go for EQ on Cradily, since Starmie kills Swampert. Though confuse ray can cause switches and rack up some damage due to hitting themselves, SR and Spikes damage. Not much to say, I think it is pretty good, though since 2 pokes are using toxic you may want to use a Toxic Spiker , even though you miss out on getting Zapdos and such.

You should definetly consider Slack Off over Stone Edge. Not being able to survive hits from Pokemon puts this Pokemon into range of being a Physical attacker, in which case, you should just use Tyranitar over this.

- Roost

Classic SkarmBliss technique. I would recommend Brave Bird over Drill Peck seeing as you have Steel typing, high defense and Roost, the minor recoil is pratically just like a U-Turn hitting you. You'll also do more damage to Breloom, Infernape, Scizor, and Lucario.

I really recommend T-Wave over Toxic here and Flamethrower over T-Bolt. T-Wave will give you paralysis and help against Infernape who could run through this team. Flamethrower is better, so you don't get walled by Dugtrio, Magezone and various Steels/Grounds.

It's almost 100% better to use Ice Beam, so you have superior coverage. Not many things can switch into this easily, unless it's Snorlax or Blissey, but even then. Trick is basically useless, because you want to be able to keep the Scarf for speed and quick revenge kills.

Mixed Dancer. I've never used this set before, but it looks like a weaker version to the classic TyraniBoah. I would highly recommend TyraniBoah over this, seeing as Crunch being your only attack, you're not going to get far.

Ok so I finally edited the whole thing and its now as it is supposed to be.

@ WH1t3N1N7A: Sorry about that I had a problem with the format but I fixed it. Now, about adding a pokemon with Toxic Spikes I did consider it however most of the pokemons that have access to Toxic Spikes are of my dislike since they have mediocre defenses and anyways Flying pokemons like Zapdos, Azelf, Mesprit, Uxie, Gengar (who can absorb the Spikes) Flygon, Salamence, Dragonite, Gyarados are all not going to be poisoned and anyways Toxic Spikes are easy to get rid-of either switching-in a pokemon of the Poison Type or using Rapid Spin that is why I chose 2 Toxic pokemons.

@ Lord_Blood: First of all nice avatar lol. Second there is a reason for Blissey's Toxic or else the team would'nt be called Stall SS. On Skarmory I will probably switch Drill Peck for Brave Birds since the extra power is actually nice. My team wont benefit from Thunder Wave since most of the pokemon have under avergae speed and wont outspeed anything even with the para in effect.
One question...why Earthquake on Cradily, just to get rid of steels or is there any other reason? o:

@ Pranoid212: Yeah im probably oging to switch Stone Edge for Salck Off since SE is not doing as good as I wanted it to do, so yeah...

@ Zathurina: LOL Omg! I love your avatar its really nice xD. About your rate yeah im probably going to go with Grass Knot on Cradily so Starmie can actually ditch Grass Knot and go back with Trcick.

Thanks for your Ratings.

I could actually see Tyranitar benefiting from Rock Polish, since it seems that you aren't aiming to do much more than bring its speed up to a good spot. In that case, you might as well use Rock Polish / Dark Pulse / Flamethrower / Ice Beam with Modest. The issue with that would be that it loses to Blissey one-on-one (although, Toxic / Wish / Protect Blissey may beat you with Crunch / DD anyway... eh, probably not), so if Tar's your last Pokemon, then you lose. It could probably KO Gyara with Dark Pulse if you've gotten off a Rock Polish already, but you'd probably be too weak afterwards to complete a "sweep". Might be something to try, at least.

Hippowdon:

Hippowdon should have Slack Off in place of Roar. He is the only pokemon on your team that can take Rock type attacks, and combined with his naturally high defence, makes him a great Tyranitar counter (barring Aqua Tail). I see little need for Roar when Skarmory already possesses Whirlwind and has Shed Shell to avoid being shut down by Magnezone. Slack Off also enables Hippowdon to make the most of a turn when the opposing pokemon uses U-turn.

As well, I recommend Ice Fang in place of Stone Edge. Ice + Ground provides superior type coverage and hits Salamence and Flygon for x4 damage. Also, Stone Edge's shaky accuracy can let you down when aiming for a KO on Flying pokemon and to remove an enemy Aerodactyl's Focus Sash, and its PP can let you down in stall games.

Skarmory:

Replace Drill Peck with Brave Bird. This helps compensate for its low Atk, enabling him to OHKO Heracross, take down Gyarados and Salamence with greater ease. (Brave Bird does 42.47% - 50.00% damage to 4 HP / min Salamence - with SR and LO damage from locked Outrage, Salamence may quickly find himself in KO range). Recoil can be healed off with Leftovers, and losing Skarmory isn't too big of an issue when Hippowdon can act as a secondary physical wall.

Starmie:

Starmie isn't the most ideal Infernape counter thanks to a Grass Knot weakness. For a Choice set, Latias makes a better counter. I was orignally going to recommend her, but after looking at your team, I see both Latias and Starmie are major CB Scizor and Tyranitar bait, resulting in a Pursuit related death. Scizor can also play the Pursuit or U-turn game. I would replace Starmie with Physco Shift Latias:
Bold
Flame Orb
Psycho Shift
Trick
Recover
Dragon Pulse
252 HP / 228 Def / 28 Spe

She works great as a Tyranitar and Scizor lure, crippling them for the rest of the match with Burn. It's also synergises well with your team, for it affects the many Steel pokemon that resist Toxic and SR. Trick and Flame Orb work great against opposing Stall Teams, stealing an enemy wall's Leftovers and giving them 12.5% damage each turn (Blissey is a great target). And of course, this Latias still makes fire monkeys run away. Swampert may be harder to remove, but he won't enjoy a Flame Orb nor will he have the raw strength to take down Latias. Unfortunately, she risks getting into a stallfest with Heatran and giving him a Flash Fire boost. So we'll make some changes to Blissey to better prepare her.

Finally, Starmie isn't needed for a status absorber when you have Blissey for all statues (most notably Sleep), Skarmory for Toxic, Hippowdon for Thunderwave and Latias for Will o Wisp.

Blissey:

With more dependence on beating Heatran, I would have Seimsic Toss in place of Flamethrower/Thunderbolt, change her nature to Calm and change her EVs to 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SDef.

There is a larger focus on SDef for Flash Fire boosted Heatran. Even ignoring this, it's still largely beneficial. You already have two great physical walls (Hippowdon and Skarmory), and Blissey is your dominant special wall; your EV spread should reflect that. Max SDef. HP is 4, because her HP is so high, EVs make very little difference and there's no point aiming for a bonus Leftovers point as SS will remove that extra point.

Flamethrower/Thunderbolt has pitiful power. For starters, it fails to break a Heatran's Substitute, meaning Blissey would fail against Substitute variants. Flamethrower/Thunderbolt even less successful against Tyranitar (only attempt taking him down if he's locked on Pursuit or Burned). Overall, Siemsic Toss does more damage to most pokemon than those two moves. And of course, there's no need for SpA with Seimsic Toss.

Now, with Seimsic Toss, Blissey cannot touch Gengar. But fortunately, she can stall out against it with Protect + Wish, Leftovers and SS. Timid LO Focus Blast has a less than 50% chance of 3HKOing Blissey.

Cradily:

There are two major faults with your team. One: Your team is heavily dependent on SR and Spikes yet you have no spin blocker. Two: by removing Starmie, I have removed your revenge killer. Three: You have no pokemon that can switch into Trick and take a Choice Scarf. Cradily isn't needed on your team and is just extra luxury - for a mixed wall, he doesn't comfortably wall MixMence and fails against Infernape without Confusion hax. As for a physical and special wall, other pokemon do it better. So replace Cradily with Scarf Rotom-h:
Timid
Choice Scarf
Thunderbolt
Shadow Ball
Overheat
Trick
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Speed

Rotom-h, the best spin blocker. Now with speed to make a great revenge killer. Jolly enables it to outrun +1 Jolly Gyarados, Scarf Heatran and Scarf Heracross. Overheat is a solid option for removing the Steel pokemon that dominate the OU metagame (on average 2 steels in every team), especially Scizor - Rotom-h is one of the best Scizor counters in the game. Rotom-h makes a great switch-in to take Trick from all the common Trick users except Gengar, ironically. So my last change will deal with that.

Tyranitar:

Rotom-h, with it's superior SpA, Overheat and resistance to Steel attacks, makes it a much better option for taking down Steels than Tyranitar, who risks a OHKO from Scizor's LO Bullet Punch thanks to the Hasty Nature. Tyranitar should replace Flamethrower with Pursuit to ensure that Gengar will die. Unfortunately, Tyranitar needs heavy investment to survive a LO Gengar Focus Blast. So we don't want to give it a LO or any item that would work well with your Mix DD set. So we'll have to give Tyranitar a standard CB . Now, in order for him to switch into Gengar, take a Trick and always survive Focus Blast with just SR residual damage, he needs the following EV spread: Adamant 176 SDef / 240 HP / 92 Atk ((Actually, he has a 2.56% of being OHKOed with SR, but 92 Atk gives an bonus point)). It's a mix of the specially bulky CB set and the standard CB set - it more comfortably takes down special sweepers lik Zapdos, Porygon-Z and even Celebi.
Pursuit, as well as Gengar, is useful for guaranteeing the slaughter of frail and pokemon. Those without a weakness can also be slaughted if they have taken considerable damage - Blissey, Porygon-Z.

Ice Beam makes a poor choice on a CB pokemon. So Aqua Tail will have to suffice for Gliscor, we'll have Aqua Tail. With this set, Aqua Tail will deal 51.41% - 61.02%, a 93.29% chance of a 2HKO. This is while I recommend a CB instead of Leftovers. Just be aware that Sand Veil will make Aqua Tail's accuracy even worse, and Tyranitar lacks the ability to outspeed Gliscor. Note that Aqua Tail won't 2HKO Hippowdon, but it can discourage him for switching in on Tyranitar.

And finally, with CB, replace Dragon Dance with Stone Edge for obvious reasons.

Just a note. LO Focus Blast will still OHKO this Tyranitar. But the only pokemon that LO Gengar would dare use Focus Blast on is Blissey, and you would be using Protect with Blissey anyways.

[EDIT] 7.34 pm 3/3/09

With this Tyranitar set, should Ice Beam be needed for Flygon or Salamence, Hippowdon is a great switch-in to Flygon, and Skarmory serves as a great Salamence check.

On second thoughts, I recommend Ice Punch over Aqua Tail on Tyranitar. It's stronger and more accurate against Gliscor, and it can punish Flygon switch-ins. The main pokemon that Aqua Tail handle are Gliscor, Hippowdon, Donphan and Rhyperior. Ice Punch is obviously superior against Gliscor. Aqua Tail fails to 2HKO Hippowdon and Donphan anyways, meaning it's only situational against Hippowdon and you're better off switching out against Donphan. Aqua Tail is better against Rhyperior, though it may not even OHKO 4 HP / min neutral nature Rhyperior. And such a Rhyperior would be running Speed EVs, enabling it to outrun Tyranitar. So you either have no chance of a OHKO or your outsped. Against Rhyperior - use prediction and switch out to Hippowdon, Skarmory or even Latias. Finally, Ice Punch is useful for finishing off Flying pokemon if you don't want to rely on Stone Edge's accuracy.

Your team currently seems quite vulnerable to a lot of sweepers. If Starmie is taken out (which isn't hard, considering you can be pursuit-trapped easily since you have a Choice item), Infernape easily decimates the remainder of the team. Dragon Dance Tyranitar with Aqua Tail as his third move can easily sweep through this team, especially as Hippowdon lacks recovery. Again if Starmie is removed, DD Salamence or Gyarados have fairly free reign, especially Bulky Gyarados, who can set up on your Skarmory, since Skarm lacks Brave Bird. Lucario and Scizor also do a pretty good job of wrecking up your team if they manage to set up a Swords Dance.

So what would I recommend? For starters, Choice Scarf Starmie seems like a bad decision. A defensive team really needs a rapid spinner, especially when so many of your Pokemon are vulnerable to Toxic Spikes. I'd switch it to a Rapid Spin set, probably Surf/Tbolt/Rapid Spin/Recover. As long as you leave it enough speed to outspeed Infernape, it still acts as your counter there and can do a decent number on Gyarados to boot.
After that, Cradily seems quite out of place. He's really not that great of a wall, and there's very little that he can handle that Blissey can't. I would agree with the last poster who suggested you drop him for a Choice Scarf Rotom-H. However, Shadow Ball is not necessarily the best option here for his third move. You need to consider what threats you want to counter. Your other options include HP Ice (hits Dragons), HP Grass (hits Swampert), HP Ground (hits Heatran and Magnezone), or HP Fighting (hits Tyranitar). Shadow Ball is a good option and allows you to counter other ghosts and psychics, but a Hidden Power can give you better overall coverage (HP Grass hits everything but Salamence for at least neutral, HP Ice hits everything at least Neutral but falls short against Swampert. These are your best options as HP Fighting is only a 2HKO at best on Ttar). Alternately you can consider Will-O-Wisp, which can help deal with Pursuiters who switch in.

Agreeing with the aboove poster about Starmie being a key staple to this team: I would suggest a Surf/Thunderbolt/Recover/Reflect version with the standard spread.

I play a variant of this stall team quite often so I have a few suggestions based on my experiences:

Hippo:
I agree with what many have been saying about swapping stone edge for slack off. It keeps in the "stall" spirit that your team for the most part embodies and really makes him tough to take down. The rest of your team doesn't have a big weakness to fliers/levitators so don't be worried.

Skarm: Definitely Brave Bird over Drill Peck if you are running Roost. No question.

Bliss: I love the set you have for her. I personally like flamethrower over thunderbolt because most do not seem to expect this. Can't tell you how many scizor's get swapped into my Blissey. Oops.

Cradily: I respect your use of a less-used pokemon but there are more-used ones that will do it's job a lot better. Try Dusknoir in this spot:

Dusknoir@Leftovers - Impish
HP 252/Defense 252/Speed 6
-Will-o-wisp
-Pain split
-Firepunch
-Thunderpunch

Dusknoir acts as a really good wall against basically anyone. WoW can do a job similar to Toxic on your Cradily. Pain split is Dusknoir's healing move. Fire and Thunderpunch for coverage. The other added advantage is that Dusknoir blocks Rapid Spin, which is a significant bane to any stall team.

Starmie and TTar: I like your Starmie set (ice beam over trick). I think it preforms it's role on this team really well. I wouldn't be overly concerned with grass knot MixApe if I were you. I also think TTar fits in well.

I gotta agree with Luistheninja about replacing Tyranitar (or some other thing) with Rotom-H. Life Orb Scizor kinda destroys 2/3 of your team...
