[SET]
Name: Psychic Spooker
Move 1: X-Scissor
Move 2: Spore
Move 3: Pursuit
Move 4: Seed Bomb / Screech / Knock Off
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 6 Spe
Item: Leftovers / Focus Sash

[SET COMMENTS]

Physical Pursuit gave Parasect a new weapon in the 4th generation. This set is scary to Psychic-types who are weak to both Pursuit and X-Scissor. HP EVs allow Parasect to take weaker hits and pose an immediate threat with both moves.

Spore helps to ease prediction, and is vital on pretty much every Parasect set. Knock Off will remove the item of anything which comes in on Parasect, possibly crippling them. Sleeping a counter and removing its item are both viable strategies and allow Parasect to do something useful before fainting.

When there are no Psychics to scare, Seed Bomb is another good STAB move for Parasect. On the other hand, Screech is a nice way to ease prediction, as nothing wants to face a base 80 STAB Attack with -2 Defense!

[SET]
Name: Choice Band
Move 1: Seed Bomb
Move 2: X-Scissor
Move 3: Spore
Move 4: Pursuit / Aerial Ace / Brick Break
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 118 HP / 252 Atk / 148 Spe
Item: Choice Band

[SET COMMENTS]

Parasect is slow and boasts mediocre coverage, meaning his skills with a Choice Band leave much to be desired. One thing in Parasect's favour is Spore, as it allows it to incapitate an opponent. This makes it difficult for the opponent to find something to switch in.

X-Scissor and Seed Bomb are both 80 power STAB moves which, when coming off of 475 Attack, can hit hard on anything which doesn't resist them.

Pursuit will hit anything which switches in fear of sleep, Brick Break will heavily dent Rock/Steels, and Aerial Ace is for fellow Bug types. Knock Off is tempting on this set, but it is better left to support sets due to its low base power.

the 148 Speed EVs allow it to outspeed Quiet Ampharos. Parasect is far too slow to make investing max Speed worthwhile.

[SET]
Name: Swords Dance
Move 1: Swords Dance
Move 2: Spore
Move 3: X-Scissor
Move 4: Seed Bomb / Brick Break / Aerial Ace
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 118 HP / 252 Atk / 148 Spe
Item: Leftovers

[SET COMMENTS]

This set makes good use of Spore by allowing Parasect to boost its impressive attack even higher. After a Swords Dance, Parasect will have a whopping 634 Attack to hit with. Unfortunately, he only has 132 Speed and mediocre coverage to use it with.

X-Scissor is the better of the two STABs for Parasect to use, so it's an essential on this set. The UU Steels are all part Rock or Ground, meaning that Seed Bomb will hit them for neutral, making it a viable option on this set. It also has the added bonus of hitting Quagsire and Whiscash very hard. Brick Break will hit said Rock/Steels for 4x damage, as well as Steelix for 2x.

Unfortunately, both moves will leave you helpless against Flying-types such as Altaria (Although Seed Bomb still hits Mantine) and other Bug-types. Aerial Ace is the move of choice for the Bugs, but its low base power still leaves much to be desired against Flying-types.

[SET]
Name: Status
Move 1: Spore
Move 2: Stun Spore
Move 3: X-Scissor / Seed Bomb
Move 4: Pursuit / Knock off / Aromatherapy
Ability: Effect Spore
Nature: Impish / Careful
EVs: 252 HP / 128 Def / 128 SpD
Item: Leftovers / Focus Sash

[SET COMMENTS]

Status moves have always been annoying to teams which lack an absorber. Parasect fits the role of status support nicely with Spore, Aromatherapy and Effect Spore.

Spore and Stun Spore are both reliable statusing moves. These two moves, combined with Effect Spore, mean that Parasect is able to status a team effortlessly until it is knocked out. Toxic can be added if Paralysis is unnecessary, but Spore is the key move of this set and dropping it is not reccomended.

Sleeping Pokemon tend to switch, making Pursuit a very useful option. Knock Off adds to the general annoying theme of this set. Aromatherapy will allow you to heal your own status while spreading others, but Meganium is usually a much better Aromatherapist in UU. X-Scissor and Seed Bomb are both STABs, but there is not room for both of them on this set.

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Parasect makes nice use of a Quick Claw. Its 30 base speed really hinders his attacking prowess, and although unreliable, Quick Claw can help Parasect get a kill. Parasect is too weak to use an Occa or a Coba Berry (Reduces Fire and Flying damage respectively) but it could make use of a Yache Berry to survive occasional Hidden Powers or Ice Punches.

Swords Dance can boost Parasect's impressive Attack stat even higher. You'll need Spore to give it time to set up though, and lack of speed makes setting up and getting a hit difficult.

Counter may seem stupid when you look at Parasect's defenses, but since Focus Sash is so viable on Parasect, it can net a surprise kill on a pesky foe providing there is no residual damage.

[EVs]

252 Attack is a must on any Parasect which is trying to cause damage. Its HP usually needs investing in to help Parasect to stand a chance against hits. Speed, while terrible, may need a few points to help to outspeed the occasional -Speed natured or paralyzed foes. 44 Speed should be used when Seed Bomb is included in the moveset, as this allows Parasect to outspeed minimum Speed Quagsire.

[OPINION]

X-Scissor, Seed Bomb, and Pursuit are very welcome additions to its physical movepool. However, Parasect's main weapon remains as Spore. Putting a counter to sleep with 100% accuracy is something every pokemon wishes it could do. Parasect's typing makes it a nice switch in to Choiced Ground, Grass, and Fighting moves, and its defensive stats are fairly good. It also has a very good movepool for being annoying, coupled with two useful abilities.

The disappointing thing is Parasect's typing gives it two common 4x weaknesses: Flying and Fire. It has the burden of being both slow and frail, which is a shame because Parasect boasts a respectable 95 base Attack. Parasect's Speed is so bad that even Jolly and a Choice Scarf don't do much for it -- 261 Speed isn't worth the EVs and drop in power of Jolly.

Parasect's new ability makes it different from other Grass-types -- it now hates the sun! This makes Dry Skin Parasect useful for Rain Dance teams, sporting both a Grass and Electric resistance.

[COUNTERS]

Spore tends to make countering Parasect more difficult, but usually anything with a strong STAB move which Parasect doesn't resist should easily 2HKO the mushroom.

In addition to this, Parasect cannot handle Flying-types. Its movepool and typing mean that he cannot damage or survive assaults from them. Noctowl is a brilliant Parasect counter because Insomnia blocks Spore and status sets are ruined by Psycho Shift. Vital Spirit Primeape can also switch in on Spore and X-Scissor and pose a threat with Ice Punch.

You might want to put in a set revolving around Dry Skin. IIRC, Dry Skin makes Parasect immune to Water attacks and restores HP during Rain, and drains HP in the Sun. I really don't know exactly how much of a difference this would make, but it at least downs the Fire moves that Parasect is horribly weak to by 1.5. Maybe something like this:

Parasect @ Leftovers
Ability: Dry Skin
~Spore
~Rain Dance
~Pursuit/Knock Off
~X-scissor/Seed Bomb

Use Spore and get a turn to set up Rain Dance. If you think that the sleep induced by Spore or the change in weather will ensure a switch, Pursuit the opponent's Pokemon. Knock Off is an option if you really don't think your opponent's Pokemon are going to fear Parasect, in which case proceed to shed your opponent's Pokemon of its item. X-scissor and Seed Bomb are both good STAB moves, so choose between one of them depending on what will benefit your team the most.

Thanks for the input ^^

I did think of a similar idea, but Serebii says Parasect doesn't get Rain Dance =(. The best idea is just to use one of the bulky sets in a Rain Dance team.

Ah, tried quoting your post and you have a lot of size tags xD. So I'll do it outside of the quote box.

[SET COMMENTS]

Physical Pursuit gave Parasect a new weapon in the 4th generation. This set is scary to Psychic-types who are weak to both Pursuit and X-Scissor. The HP EVs allow Parasect to take weaker hits and pose an immediate threat with both moves.

Move 4: Pursuit / Aerial Ace / Brick Break (Spacing, again not sure it really matters but still!)

[SET COMMENTS]

Parasect is slow and boasts mediocre coverage, meaning his skills with a Choice Band leave much to be desired. One thing in Parasect's favour is Spore, as it allows it (don't refer to specific gender) to incapitate an opponent. This makes it difficult for the opponent to find a safe switch-in.

X-Scissor and Seed Bomb are both 80 Power STAB moves which, when coming off of 475 attack, can hit hard on anything which doesn't resist them.

[SET COMMENTS]

Parasect, being a Grass-type, is immune to Leech Seed from threats such as Meganium, as well as 4x resisting Grass attacks. This makes Parasect a great switch in on bulky Grass-types. X-Scissor will allow you to pose a threat to them once you're in. Seed Bomb is basic STAB.

Spore helps to ease prediction, and is vital on pretty much every Parasect set. Knock Off will remove the item of anything which comes in on Parasect, possibly crippling them. Sleeping a counter and removing its item are both viable strategies and allow Parasect to do something useful before fainting.

Considering every respectable subseeder carries HP Fire, I really highly doubt that the Seed blocker works. Have you personally tested every set in this analysis?

Isn't Parasect a good Celebi counter? I mean it can switch in: Grass Knot, Leech Seed, Recover and much more. And it can hurt Celebi with STAB X-Scissor and pursuit if it switches.

Chris' comment here made me realise that calling it a Leech Seed blocker was friggin stupid. I'd fought around 3 Venusaurs and they all were scarfed. I still haven't fought a HP Fire Meganium though.

However, the set is still awesome, so I'm renaming it and removing Seed Bomb. Knock off is just SO much better. Seriously, Parasect's Sub has lived all sorts of moves. I don't think Parasect is so frail now I've tried it more with Defencive EVs

@ Twash: Cheers for the massive nitpick. I'll edit that when my PC Stops being so laggy from Shoddy. :D

EDIT: Twash's stuff has been implemented.

@Chileon: Yeah, it is. I doubt anybody will be using it in OU though =(

Well crud. Rain Dance is one of those moves I just assume most every Pokemon knows. Sorry about that. I also looked up Dry Skin, and it also makes the Pokemon weak to Fire, so even the Rain wouldn't save Parasect at all.

The Counter/Focus Sash Parasect might want its own set. That would seem like a good choice, considering Parasect has two 4x weaknesses.

You could use Counter on a Rain Dance team. With the health gained from the Rain plus Leftovers, and if you can set up Spore, Parasect can get some HP back to maybe dish out another Counter. This is assuming you have fainted all of your opponent's Pokemon that know Fire or Flying moves. The surprise factor would be gone, though.

I really wouldn't run anything slower than 107 Speed (44 Speed EVs) if you are using Seed Bomb. This will allow you to outrun minimum Speed Quagsire (106 Speed) and hit it with a Seed Bomb before Parasect is forced to take an Ice Punch or Ice Beam.

I would actually like to see a Swords Dance set. 95 base Attack is nothing to scoff at in UU (I think it's safe to say this will probably end up NU once that is devloped). You can write it off as being too slow to effectively Swords Dance, but UU has some great Agility passers (I'm looking at you Girafarig / Lopunny). Paralysis support can patch up the Speed issues and lets not forget Trick Room. Parasect would actually work very good on a Trick Room team. Consider the synergy between Camerupt + Parasect, both great under Trick Room circumstances. I just see potential for a Swords Dance set and it shouldn't be written off because of Parasects Speed issues which can be patched up with some team support.

Well, Ok I'll have a mess around. I don't think it'll differ much from the Band set though =/.

Thanks for your input Caelum and Misaki-Chi.

Oh, uh, Dry Skin is preferred on every Parasect, as he can't take a Fire hit anyway and an immunity to Water is kick ass.

"Psychic Spooker" and "Bulky" only play with one different attack, and they basically do the same thing (switch in and threaten either psychics or grassers)

Quick Claw is a horrible item.

True. I'll specify on the sets. IMO Status should still run Effect Spore so it can do nothing and still status stuff.

Ok, removed Bulky set [but kept the paragraph regarding Spore and Knock Off].

Added a Swords Dance set.

Nitpick away :D

Quick Claw is a horrible item.
Stole it from the current Parasect analysis.

This set makes good use of Spore by allowing Parasect to boost its impressive Attack even higher. After a Swords Dance, Parasect will have a whopping 634 Attack stat to hit with. Unfortunately, low speed and lackluster coverage make such a set unreliable, and thus Screech is a worthwhile option; retaining your ability to hit hard while allowing your switch-in the advantage.

X-Scissor is the better of the two STAB moves for Parasect to use, so it's an essential on this set (why is it the better option? may want to explain). The UU Steels are all either part Rock or Ground, meaning that Seed Bomb will hit them for neutral damage(removed "making it a viable option on this set"). It also has the added bonus of hitting Quagsire and Gastrodon very hard. Brick Break will hit said Rock/Steels for 4x damage, as well as Steelix for 2x. (may want damage calcs against Steelix)

Unfortunately, both moves will leave you helpless against Flying-types such as Altaria (Although Seed Bomb still hits Mantine) and other Bug-types. Aerial Ace is the move of choice for the Bugs, but its low base power still leaves much to be desired against Flying-types.

Swords Dance can boost Parasect's impressive Attack stat even higher. You'll need Spore to give it time to set up though, and lack of speed makes setting up and getting a hit difficult. (should this not be taken out?)

Counter may seem stupid when you look at Parasect's defenses, but since Focus Sash is so viable on Parasect, it can net a surprise kill on a pesky foe providing there is no residual damage.

[EVs]

252 Attack is a must on any Parasect (removed "which is") trying to cause damage. Its HP usually needs investing in to help Parasect (removed "to") take light hits. His Speed, while terrible, may need a few points to help to outspeed the occasional -Speed natured or paralyzed foes. 44 Speed should be used when Seed Bomb is included in the moveset, as this allows Parasect to outrun Standard Quagsire.

[OPINION]

X-Scissor, Seed Bomb, and Pursuit are very welcome additions to its physical movepool. However, Parasect's main weapon remains as Spore. Putting a counter to sleep with 100% accuracy is something every pokemon wishes it could do. Parasect's typing makes it a nice switch in to Choiced Ground, Grass, and Fighting moves, and its defensive stats are satisfactory. (removed last sentence, may want to edit and put back in, "It also has a very good movepool for being annoying, coupled with two useful abilities.")

The bad news is Parasect's typing gives it two common 4x weaknesses: Flying and Fire. It has the burden of being both slow and frail, which is a shame because Parasect boasts a respectable 95 base Attack. Its Speed is so low that even with a Jolly nature and a Choice Scarf it sports 261 Speed, which isn't worth the bulk and drop in power.

Parasect's new ability makes it different from other Grass-types -- it now hates the sun! This makes Dry Skin Parasect useful for Rain Dance teams, sporting both a Grass and Electric resistance.

[COUNTERS]

Spore tends to make countering Parasect more difficult, but usually anything with a strong STAB move that Parasect doesn't resist should easily 2HKO the mushroom.

Good analysis for the forgotten bug. :pirate:

Oh, uh, Dry Skin is preferred on every Parasect, as he can't take a Fire hit anyway and an immunity to Water is kick ass.
I honestly don't see why ... having run an effect Parasect on my NU mono-bug team I cannot count the number of times Effect Spore has saved me. Its every bit as viable as Dry Skin.

I'm going to end this "Dry Skin is better" discussion.

Dry Skin > On offensive sets that you don't want to be taking many hits on, but the healing is nice as well.

Effect Spore> Defensive sets where you can actually take advantage of the effects.

It comes down to if you want Parasect to be taking hits, which you can spread status around with, or not.
