Introduction

I'm sure many of you are familiar with my infamous Quagsire stall https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/peaked-1-2059-elo-–-quagsire-stall.3747843/ which peaked ladder and proved that a seemingly forgotten big stall staple of previous generations can hold its own against the best that Gen 9 OU has to offer. That team was not without flaw of course, as it was 6-0'd on the spot by Taunt + Tera Flying Roaring Moon. However, with Roaring Moon now banned, I knew Quagsire could be back in a big way.

I started with my old stall as a base - why mess with perfection after all? However, there a few modernizations I knew that could make it even better than before. With Roaring Moon gone, I knew the meta would start trending to bulkier playstyles, featuring breakers like SD Gliscor and Knock Off Ogerpon. I wanted a better way to deal with those, so I swapped out Sinistcha for Weezing-G, which has seen a massive uptick in popularity both on stall and just overall due to it's ability to completely wreck gameplans with it's ability Neutralizing Gas. Now we had a great counter to annoying mons like Gliscor, Garganacl, Clefable, and most importantly, could defog on Gholdengo. When paired with the double defog core of Corviknight, this team can afford to run bootsless.

I know some of you may be thinking this team is awfully similar to a few other stalls you have seen running around on ladder and in tournaments. However, these stalls are all descendants of a stall structure that I pioneered during the ladder phase in OLT 2024, long before anyone else had realized how effective this stall core was. Here's a high ladder replay from OLT almost a year ago and the team as an example for those unaware of what I'm talking about:

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9ou-2182453843-9veuh3gzo26odhg4i3wsvqvhuabwscupw
https://pokepast.es/0d8343929613f036

I found this core to be especially effective against hazard stack balance teams, and this core has only gotten stronger since. Quagsire also proves to be a huge benefit, this time taking the burden of hazard setter from Gliscor instead of Blissey, and letting Gliscor run Swords Dance + Knock Off to serve as our long term wincon. Quagsire makes this team significantly less passive while still allowing for tremendous walling and progress making potential with leftover, toxic, immediate recovery, and spikes.

This team immediately dominated ladder, and I reached an impressive 89.9 GXE. I am certain that this team would have been able to peak ladder, but I wanted to get this RMT out a little earlier than planned for reasons you can read about in the last section. Anyways, without further ado, let's get into it.

:Quagsire:
Quagsire returns as our physical wall. For more info on why we chose Quagsire over Dondozo, go check out the old stall RMT. https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/peaked-1-2059-elo-–-quagsire-stall.3747843/

A few changes from before however, we now run spikes as mentioned in the intro to free up Gliscor. Toxic and Earthquake let Quagsire beat pretty much every physical attacker in the game.

Counter is also an option for :Quagsire: in place of Toxic or Spikes to ensure better matchups vs. Choice Band threats and late game :Kingambit:.

Tera Fairy or Dark was chosen to help vs. Tera Dark :Kingambit: or a Nasty Plot :Darkrai: that has gotten out of hand, as :Quagsire: will survive any one hit and be able to land a Toxic. These are also good defensive Tera types that can be used in a variety of situations depending on what the team needs, such as facing down an :Ogerpon-Wellspring: or a Dragon Dance :Kyurem:.

1746437948513.png

:Blissey:
As usual, Calm Mind :Blissey: is the team’s primary special set-up wall.

Not much explanation needed here, but this time we are running rocks and mono shadow ball. This way Blissey is not completely helpless vs Gholdengo and can still hit various tera Ghost special threats that will try to beat mono-seismic toss Blissey.

1746438044848.png

:Toxapex:
Toxapex has come back in a big way for stall, once again becoming the best regenerator option over mons like Mola and Amoonguss. For more info, check out my video where I ranked EVERY stall mon in Gen 9 OU

:Toxapex: can do everything, such as trading HP for status on Pokémon like :Iron Valiant: and :Ogerpon-Wellspring: so that the other walls on the team can stall them out easily.

:Toxapex: is also extremely important for the :Primarina: and :Garganacl: matchups, using Haze to prevent them from boosting. :Toxapex: can also take on everything from :Barraskewda: and :Walking-Wake: in weather.

Baneful Bunker is great for scouting attacks, stalling weather, punishing physical attackers, and can help vs Future Sight when used in conjunction with Tera Steel

Finally, Tera Steel was chosen as an overall great defensive Tera type that can be used vs. Pokémon like :Raging Bolt:, Mixed :Kyurem:, Choice Band :Rillaboom:, various Stored Power sweepers like :Hatterene:, and general Volt Switch / U-Turn spam cores. Tera Grass is also an option on this set for better matchups in Ogerpon-W.

1746438262307.png

:Weezing-Galar:
In place of Sinistcha, I opted for Weezing. It serves as the second defogger and main way to force progress through fatter teams by shutting off magic guard clef, gliscor, and regen mons. I opted for flamethrower as an extra way to punish steels like Gholdengo and Kingambit while still doing meaningful damage to Gliscor. Tera Ghost is for spin blocking and for hard walling Ursaluna in Trick Room but dragon/grass is also an option for Ogerpon.

For more info on what makes weezing so great on stall, check out the video

:Gliscor:
This is definitely the biggest change on the team, but with two other great hazard setters on this team, we are fully free to run Swords Dance Gliscor to accelerate progress against super fat teams and give us a fighting chance vs Gholdengo hazard stack balances.

For the longest time, I was a big hater of SD Gliscor on stall, as I felt like you wanted to prioritize walling offensive threats and the progress from the SD set was not as important as the bulk of the spikes set. However, with the meta shifting to BO and Balance following the Roaring Moon ban, I have since come off this stance. SD Gliscor is a great option on this team and catches many bulkier squads off guard expecting hard stall/spikes sets.

Gliscor sets up on the passive Pokemon and forces Knocks + Boosted Facades into the opposing walls like Skarm, Corv, and Zama, and can then retreat into Toxapex or Weezing and continue the cycle, allowing us to slowly but surely break these teams down and win long-term. This does come at the cost of having one less wall, however Gliscor is bulky enough with just HP investment to take some surprising hits, just not as many as before.

We also run max speed to tie other SD Gliscors and Kyurem, as well as beat out lando and Great Tusk that try and shut it down before it gets out of hand. I think this team can definitely run max bulk SD gliscor instead, but I have found this to be the most effective set.

:Corviknight:
Without :Dondozo:, this team was missing a rock-solid counter to :Kingambit:. As previously mentioned, :Quagsire: is unable to check :Kingambit: long-term and outright loses to 5 Fallen and / or Tera Dark. :Talonflame: and :Moltres: are also shaky options, as Lum Berry or Tera Fire can throw a huge wrench in the plan. Therefore, :Corviknight: was the only choice. :Corviknight: is vastly superior to :Skarmory: for two reasons:

Firstly, :Corviknight: boasts the insanely valuable ability Pressure. This means that :Corviknight: can trade 1 Roost PP for 2 Kowtow Cleave PP per turn, as Kowtow Cleave only has 16 total PP. Once Kowtow Cleave PP has been exhausted, :Quagsire: is able to wall :Kingambit: with ease.

Naturally, as our primary :kingambit: check, we have run enough speed EVs to creep even Jolly :Kingambit:. Under no circumstance can :Kingambit: be allowed to outspeed :Corviknight:. This is because fast :Corviknight: is able to switch in on a :Kingambit: that uses Swords Dance and set up an Iron Defense before :Kingambit: moves, thus taking neutral damage, or Roost off the hit if :kingambit: uses Kowtow Cleave on the switch instead. With Iron Defense + Body Press, :kingambit: is also forced to Tera if it ever wants to stand a chance, as Body Press OHKOs easily after one Iron Defense. Even Tera Ghost :Kingambit: cannot beat :Corviknight: as it simply gets PP stalled. Additionally, a :Kingambit: that has used Tera is now vulnerable to Toxic from :Quagsire: or Toxic Spikes on subsequent switch-ins. A statused :Kingambit: is a dead :Kingambit: vs. this team.

Secondly, unlike :Skarmory: or :Dondozo:, :Corviknight: offers Defog, allowing the team to win longer games vs. Hazard Stack teams. This is very useful for teams that use hazard pressure + Swords Dance + Knock Off :Gliscor: to break through bulky teams, as :Corviknight: keeps the hazards off for the rest of the team and PP stalls every Swords Dance variant of :Gliscor:. Although :Skarmory: does get hazards, the team already has other Pokémon who can set them.

Finally, unlike :Talonflame:, :Corviknight: is not deathly afraid of Knock Off and can absorb it in an emergency and still be functional without needing to always Defog. Thanks to Pressure, :Corviknight: also wins the long-term Defog battle vs. most hazard setters by swapping in on the turn the hazards are set.

Tera Fighting was chosen to better match into Tera Dark :Kingambit: and boost Body Press damage. Heavy Duty Boots were also chosen to ensure that :Corviknight: always stays at full HP when switching around.

Threats

As I always say, although this team is very tough to beat, it is not unbeatable.

:Ursaluna:
:Heatran: This mon is super annoying for this squad. It sets up rocks in the face of our defoggers and forces progress with magma storm. Quagsire does wall it and OHKOs with Earthquake, but this often can come at the cost of being severely chipped down and rendering Quagsire unable to wall other threats.

In the same vein :Garganacl: can be annoying, as it likes to just sit there and spam salt cure + Stealth Rock as we try and defog and continuously get chipped, but this one isn't as bad as we can retaliate by burning it thanks to Weezing's ability

Booster Attack :Great Tusk: can also be quite frightening as with the right coverage it 2HKOs the entire team. Need to predict the moves right and get Corv in safely to ID up or just out-offense it with Gliscor.

Thanks for sticking around. Finally the big announcement

Important Announcement

Due to an unfortunate oversight on my part, the Big Stall Official Server (https://discord.gg/C8ZD8ex72F) was raided by members of Lancecord who impersonated staff members and used this to gain access to administrator permissions and wipe the server. For those unaware of what lancecord is, here are some posts to help give context on the situation

Many users were removed from the server and all channels were deleted. We are working overtime to restore everything, but for now the basic channels are still back.

In the meantime, I need help from all of you. For those of you who have used my teams in the past and /or were a part of the server before, can you reach out to everyone you know who was in this server previously or would be interested in being in this server, and invite them back? I will also continue to spread the word but if everyone can do just a little bit to help, it would go a long way.

Please join the server (https://discord.gg/C8ZD8ex72F) and share this RMT around as well. Thank you all!

Acknowledgements

Many thanks to everyone in the Stall Discord and Community. Everyone there is super helpful and passionate about Pokémon which in turn motivates me to build teams and ladder.

Finally, while this RMT is a great starting point, it is far from comprehensive. Feel free to ask me any questions about the team or specific matchups in the comments or on Discord.

Hi! Another master-piece as usual.
One thing I had discussed and tested with Zarross a few weeks ago for double hazard control teams, is the possibility of trying other items besides HDB on Blissey.
So we decided to give up Leftovers and use Covert Cloak.
This is stupidly good at preventing Freeze from Special Kyurem, Nuzzle Hatterene, all bad RNG luck from Darkrai (except CH), makes Blissey a true counter to NP Pecharunt, Paralyze from Raging Bolt in CM wars, prevents Burn from Scald and mainly does not need to use Tera Dark to be immune to Psychic Noise recovery block.

These things take time and effort to write and the sets take time to be tested and finetuned to be able to beat out most other teams on the ladder to peak. I dont like stall and im willing to acknowledge this. Not sure who let the scrubs out and gave them permission to write sarcarstic monkey comments that downplay peoples efforts. Eat a banana bro. :bloblul::puff:

Congrats on the team Supa! However, when I had a similar team I got some feedback that was useful so I'll paste it over since it is applicable:
Congrats on having a decent peak. I have an adjustment to your Corviknight's EVs you should use. 76 HP/236 Def gives you more physical AND special bulk.

+2 252+ Atk Supreme Overlord 5 allies fainted Kingambit Kowtow Cleave vs. 76 HP / 236+ Def Corviknight: 330-388 (92.6 - 108.9%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Supreme Overlord 5 allies fainted Kingambit Kowtow Cleave vs. 60 HP / 252+ Def Corviknight: 325-384 (92.3 - 109%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
+1 252 Atk Tera Fire Kyurem Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 76 HP / 236+ Def Corviknight: 276-326 (77.5 - 91.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 Atk Tera Fire Kyurem Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 60 HP / 252+ Def Corviknight: 272-324 (77.2 - 92%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

What's the counterplay to SD Ogerpon-Wellspring (non SD with power whip ivy is still a bad MU but it's more manageable altho thats only accounting for woger and not 5 other mons on top of it)? I don't see how you beat sd woger given your not max HP corv, have no defensive tera's for it besides Tera Steel Pex toxic which good players will always scout for by swapping out, and Tera Quag is not a long term answer to it either because his bulk is shit so I'm kinda confused. I'm assuming in the 20 games played of this team judging by the decay farm glicko of +/-49 you didn't find it much?

edit: just checked the replays, one could say i can see the future

This team is cool, but a key weakness I feel from fighting it a few times is that the double defog strategy sort of hurts the team's main wincon, SD Gliscor. The team will struggle against max hazards being set due to many Pokemon running non-HDB items. This makes Defogging a key prioriity, which also hurts SD Gliscor since it will also be removing the primary source of its power against fat teams.

IDK if the way to beat hazard spam teams is neccisarily to use SD Scor as the wincon, but that's just something I've noticed while playing against it a bit. How would one play around these interactions?

Weezing-Galar could maybe run boots to make it easier to Defog.
