Permission To Use Smogon Resources

I probably posted this in the wrong section, but I couldn't find a contact page, so...

I would like to use the Pokemon strategies featured on Smogon for a program I am writing. The program is currently just a random Pokemon team generator, but I wish to include information about Pokemon strategies.

I would like to copy this information from Smogon since Smogon displays this information in the best manner. The program I am writing is non-profit and will never be sold, although I may post it upon some Pokemon forums for other people to use.

In the first version of my program, I used information from Smogon without asking. I am sorry for this, but when I first started to write it, I had no intention of releasing the program to anyone. With the new version I am currently writing, I hope to go through the whole procedure professionally, so if you don't want me use info from Smogon, I will not include any information from Smogon.

For each info you use, you must hunt down the original user who made the article/analysis/whatever, and get their specific, written permission to use their info. Smogon doesn't keep track of who wrote what analysis. Have fun finding everyone :)

Or, you could remember that Smogon is a free website, mention that the info comes from Smogon, and maybe show everyone here the program when you're done with it, sounds pretty neat.

No you don't.

All guides and strategy information are © 2004-2010 Smogon.com and its contributors.

The copyright is held by the contributors and Smogon.com. You need the permission of one or the other.

Yeah we do. We have an Archive forum where every write up is listed. We also have complete edit histories for every analysis, so we know precisely who changed what and when.

While I don't know who has a problem with the above proposal, I do feel compelled to point out that just because a website is free to access does not mean you can use its content in derivative work with nothing more than simple attribution. That's not how copyright works.

If you want to use a set off the smogon page, you don't need to use anyone's name. Indeed, the C&C staff frowns on attributing names of people to Pokemon sets. That's why you don't see things like Cro-Ogre for Mono-CM Kyogre, PhilipTran for Torment Heatran, WormSkarm for Torment Skarmory, etc.
