Soooooo I have been playing NU for a long while now and feel like I know the meta game pretty well. I wanted to build a team around one of my (if not, my all-time) favorite Pokemon, Pinsir. Pinsir is a deadly physical sweeper and I feel like with the right team support, he can lead my team to a top ranking. While I was laddering very well for a while, a series of bad crits and misses made me fall and eventually I gave up. Now I want to try again, but first I wanted to see what the lovely people over at Smogon had to say (those lovely people being you!).

At first, I had a Pinsir:

I wanted to run a set that made proper use of the wonderful ability he received from the Dream World - Moxie. With Moxie, Pinsir's attack raises by one stage with each successful KO, meaning that if the opponent gets weakened enough, Pinsir can run through the entire metagame. To use his ability, I realized that Pinsir needed speed, such as the kind you'd get from a Scarf. After using Scarfed Pinsir for a while, I realized that he just didn't have the STAB to use it effectively. He needed the coverage. Then, I decided to try an old favorite, also just released from the Dream World, SubSalac. This set combined all the things I needed, meaning speed from the Salac Berry with the power boosting ability of Moxie. Nice, now I have a Pokemon to build my team around. As for the moves, I chose his most powerful STAB, X-Scissor, first. Close Combat is another very powerful move and has great coverage when combined with the last move, Stone Edge. Overall, there's almost nothing that I can't hit. Being a Bug-type though means having a lot of weaknesses, most notably, his Stealth Rock weakness. I actually find this to be a gift sometimes, helping me activate Salac Berries without taking any damage. Base 85 Speed means that I tie with Scarfed Sawk after my berry activates, which can be fatal if I'm not behind a sub. Overall, Pinsir is a crazy good late game cleaner, but needs a team to support him and get the opponent to the point that he has something to clean up. Here's the set!

thumb_pinsir.jpg

Pinsir (M) @ Salac Berry
Trait: Moxie
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Substitute
- Close Combat
- X-Scissor
- Stone Edge

As I said, Pinsir has a lot of weaknesses that need patching up. I decided to run an offensive Probopass. I saw the same Probopass set on someone else's RMT, and always wanted to try it. Probopass and Pinsir have fairly good symmetry, Pinsir resisting both of Probopass's 4x weaknesses, while Probopass defends Pinsir's weaknesses very well.

thumb_probopass.jpg

Probopass (M) @ Air Balloon
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 28 HP / 252 SAtk / 228 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Stealth Rock
- Volt Switch
- Flash Cannon
- Earth Power

This set allows Probopass to out-speed 252 Speed EV Golem. Stealth Rock allows Pinsir to secure certain KO's, while Volt Switch allows me to keep up the momentum. Flash Cannon KO's defensive Rock-types, and Earth Power is purely coverage. The Air Balloon means Pokemon that use the EdgeQuake coverage combo have to hit Probopass with another move to break his balloon before they can his him with an Earthquake. I was thinking about running Taunt on this set over something else, as this EV spread allows me to out speed most Stealth Rock setters, as well as other hazard setters. I also thought about completely removing Probopass from this team and replacing him with someone else that covers the same role, such as Rhydon.

thumb_rotom-fan.jpg

Rotom-S @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Volt Switch
- Air Slash
- Thunderbolt
- Trick

This is a pretty standard set for Rotom-S. With a Choice Scarf, Rotom-S becomes very fast and a deadly revenge killer. Volt Switch is for keeping the momentum with my VoltVoltTurn combo, while Air Slash and Thunderbolt are other STABs that allow Rotom-S to constantly attack without switching. Trick is more of a situational move, crippling a wall or setup sweeper. Rotom-S is a pretty good pivot, but is really crippled by SR. If Samurott can avoid getting Rocks up early on, then we're all good to go.

thumb_emboar.jpg

Emboar (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Blaze
EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Flare Blitz
- Superpower
- Earthquake
- Wild Charge

Soooooo CB Emboar is awesome. I don't know why this isn't the standard set, it's the best wall-breaker in the tier, and completely tears apart teams. With the amount of switches Emboar forces, and how much damage a STAB CB boosted Flare Blitz does to everyone, it's easily one of the stars of this team. Because Scarfed Emboar is so popular, everyone suspects they'll be revenged, but the revenge normally comes when they switch to a counter and their counter gets demolished. Superpower is for another great STAB move, while Earthquake is for hitting Fire, Rock, and the rare Steel types. Wild Charge is for flying things really, as well as Water types. This EV spread allows me to out speed base 85 pokes with 0 speed investment, namely Misdreavus, who I can still revenge and KO with a Flare Blitz.

thumb_samurott.jpg

Samurott (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Torrent
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Grass Knot
- Taunt

A lot of the time, this is my lead Samurott, if I think my opponent will lead with something that's going to set up rocks or other hazards. He's pretty much a pivot kind of Pokemon, who's main purpose is too deal damage and fill up holes in my teams synergy. Nothing too exciting here, I am running the special attacking set because of how many special attackers I have on my team. Samurott is pretty good. He's not really bulky, though, and can die pretty easily. Taunt shuts down a lot of setup sweepers and then can nail the switch in with a STAB Hydro Pump. I have always been a fan of Samurott, I think he does his job exceptionally well. He's a hard cookie to crack, and can make your life a hell if you lose your counters early. Ice Beam and Grass Knot provide perfect coverage with Hydro Pump, while his EV spread is that of a standard attacker. While he's good, he's easily replaceable.

thumb_elektross.jpg

Eelektross (F) @ Choice Band
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 132 HP / 252 Atk / 124 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- U-turn
- ThunderPunch
- Superpower
- Fire Punch

YEEEESSSSSS!! I love this set. What a Pokemon. So yet another CB Pokemon on this team, and part of the VoltVoltTurn combo I have going. So ThunderPunch is a great STAB move that hits most Pokemon (aside from Ground-types, of course) for a large chunk of damage. U-turn is the main move, though, keeping up the momentum and allowing me to stay ahead of my opponent. Superpower is a strong non-STAB that allows coverage on predicted switches. Fire Punch is mainly for Amoonguss, but U-turn is more preferable. This EV spread allows me to out speed Alomomola with no speed investment and U-turn out or hit it with a ThunderPunch. Max attack is obvious and the rest is dumped into HP.

Anyway, there it is!

Possible Changes:
There are infinite possible changes, except for Pinsir. You can suggest to change Pinsir's set, but not Pinsir itself. Aside from that, please, please, PLEASE just help me. I really want to make a team that can make Pinsir awesome, but I don't know if this is that team. I really need some help and you can change whatever and whoever you want. I repeat, everything (but Pinsir) can be changed! Just give me some suggestions to make this team awesome. This team does have a pretty notable weakness to hazards worth mentioning...

Cool team, But you look pretty weak to the birds, Especially Braviary. Also your team is pretty weak to hazards in general so my first suggetion would be to use Wartortle over Samurott. You said you were unsure about Samurott and it really isn't bringing a lot to the table. I like your Pinsir a lot, but I am not so convinced that its unboosted attacks are going to be doing so much damage. For this reason I would forgo Close Combat for Swords Dance The Only steel type that you would really miss out on are Bastiodon and Probopass which are easy pickings for Emboar and even Whimsicott. After a Swords dance and Plus 1 Speed, Pinsir should be able to sweep relatively easily. You also look extremely weak to Choice Band Sawk so I would recommend Choice Specs Musharna as it has decent synergy with your team and would give you a needed special attacker if you choose to use Wartortle

Otherwise really solid team!

Wartortle @ Eviolite
Evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Nature: Calm
- Scald
- Toxic
- Rapid Spin
- Haze

Musharna (M) @ Choice Specs
Trait: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 SAtk
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Trick / Baton Pass
- Psychic
- Shadow Ball
- Hidden Power [Fighting]

Good Luck!

While I like Wartortle, he doesn't have any offensive presence, and completely kills any momentum. Musharna is a nice idea but who would I replace her with? Using Swords Dance on Pinsir kind of means I'll be walled by Rock/Ground types, such as Rhydon and Golem, as well as taking away from coverage. Pinsir does lack power at first but after he kills a weakened Pokemon, the rest fall easier and easier. He's a cleaner. Thanks for the input though, anyone else got any ideas?

You have no fighting resist so scarf sawk is a huge treath. I will suggest changing your whimsicott for scarf rotom-fan, as it can hold the momentum with volt switch and o has acces to air slash, when talking about emboar i would have changed it to expert belt or a banded set so you can hit harder. Sorry for texting but im on my phone now :-P just use the standard timid scarf set for rotom and keep the attacks on emboar but give him adamant nature. Also give probopass max hp and 0 spd ivs so your volt switch is slower than any pokemon so you can bring in pinsir or emboar with let them taking any hits well gl anf i hope i was helpfull !

Yes that was a typo :P sorry!

And I like the idea of Rotom-Fan but I feel like he adds a stealth rock Weakness I don't need, and I also already have eelektross (Granted I still have no Ground type weaknesses between them). I'll test it out! Thanks for the input, anymore ideas??

Well you can change your Emboar for Banded or Sub 3 attack Golurk. And then change your Whimsicott for Scarf Cinccino.

Ok, I'm going to assume that you play on the PO server rather than the Smogon server since Whimsicott is RU. Since you want to replace it anyways, it's no skin of my shoulder. The most helpful option would probably be Regenerator Amoonguss, since it helps absorb Toxic Spikes, protects you relatively well against the combo of Cinccino and Fighting/Golurk that easily breaks your team, and gives you some acceptable offense and Spore.

This is a pretty offensive team, which means that it would appreciate things that help its momentum. If you would prefer Scarf Rotom-S over Whimsicott, that would also be a decent option. It can revenge a +2 Gorebyss, Cinccino, Sawk, etc. reliably and has Volt Switch to give you more momentum. A double Electric pair on your team doesn't really bring you many defensive weaknesses, but as of right now your ability to use Eelektross to its fullest potential is low. Since you lack Spikes or Toxic Spikes, you would probably be better off using a set like the increasingly common Banded/Expert Belt Eelektross (courtesy of CBB) or an Expert Belt Special Eelektross. Both provide you with amazing coverage while also providing either a slow U-turn or a slow Volt-Switch.

Scarf Emboar is pretty underwhelming in the current metagame. It's not fast enough to outspeed Swellow, nor outspeed +2 Gorebyss or Torterra. It also lacks wall-breaking power, which is why I would recommend replacing it with a Banded Emboar. If you take the offensive route, you will already have a better Scarfer in Rotom-S, so this change is more helpful overall.

Here are the changes:

Amoonguss>Whimisicott

Amoonguss (M) @ Leftovers/Rocky Helmet
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb/Clear Smog
- Hidden Power Ice/Clear Smog

OR

Rotom-S>Whimsicott
Banded Emboar>Scarf Emboar
Physical Eelektross/Special Eelektross>Coil Eelektross
(It goes without saying that this is the preferred route, but its up to you if you want to make such a drastic change)

Rotom-S (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Volt Switch
- Air Slash
- Thunderbolt
- Trick/Hidden Power Ice

Emboar (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Blaze
EVs: 1128 HP / 252 Atk / 128 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Flare Blitz
- Superpower
- Head Smash
- Wild Charge

Eelektross (M) @ Choice Band/Eelektross (credit goes to CBB for this)
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- ThunderPunch
- U-turn
- Superpower
- Fire Punch

Eelektross (M) @ Choice Specs/Expert Belt
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 160 HP / 252 SAtk / 96 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch/U-turn
- Giga Drain
- Flamethrower

Hope I helped! Good luck with the team!

Considering that you are not playing Smogon NU, I'm going to knock Swellow out of the threat list, as Swellow is LU in PO (which is pretty much like RU in our tier). I do recommend Amoonguss for the removal of Toxic Spikes, considering your main sweeper isn't going to really do anything with it out on the field.

Assuming your playing PO NU, Choiced Scyther is quite the notable threat to mention for your team. Banded variants can pretty much wear you down with U-turn, with the added addition of hitting almost your entire team with the combination of U-turn, Aerial Ace, and Brick Break. Rhydon could function as a nice replacement for Probopass, as it maintains the bulk of take on Scyther with relative ease and proper prediction, not to mention being able to support your team, so that Scyther won't be able to come in so often to spam U-turn nearly as much.

As of that, that's all I can say for now, as I don't play PO NU, so I'm not too familiar with the metagame aside from that. More later, I suppose.

If you want to replace Whimsicott, you could use Serpeior:

Serperior (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 HP/4 Atk/252 Spe
Nature: Jolly
-Leaf Blade
-Taunt
-Leech Seed
-Aqua Tail/Gastro Acid

A Whimsicott with more offense. This is a twist on the SubSeeding. Taunt is unexpected from Serperior because most people think it will Sub. It can block Spore from Amoonguss, but then should switch as Amoonguss walls this Serperior. Leech Seed is for recovery/damage overtime. Leaf Blade is the physical STAB (you can take some HP EVs out for Attack), and Aqua Tail is a decent coverage move (why doesn't it get Rock Slide?!). You can replace Aqua Tail with Gastro Acid if you wish, then abilities such as Unaware, Effect Spore, and Magic Guard are taken away.
