Let’s resume OU matchmaking after this short break with one of the fastest wallbreaker in the tier: Choice Band Zeraora.
Zeraora @ Choice Band
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Plasma Fists
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
- Play Rough
Even though, Zeraora is not at its heyday anymore in SS OU, it still sees some usage and loves to see that most team rely on a Specially defensive Landorus-T to check Electric breakers. Equipped with a Choice Band, Zeraora can threaten most defensive structures with a few good anticipations. Plasma Fists is a strong Electric STAB and its main option when Ground types are removed. Close Combat is a powerful coverage option able to threaten Steel types like Heatran and Ferrothorn while Knock Off let it remove items like Landorus-T Leftovers. Lastly, Play Rough allows it to threaten Dragon types like Garchomp and Dragonite. With whom would you pair Choice Band Zeraora to make it shine as a powerful breaker and deadly cleaner? Let’s find out!
Submission phase will end on Friday, January7th, good luck!
Since this variant of Zeraora is Banded, it can often get forced out by grounds. Slowbro can switch into most of these grounds, and threatens them out with Ice Beam or Scald. It can then use this forced switch to set up Future Sight, which Zeraora can capitalize on to break past these ground types.
Considering that band Zeraora still exists and that Landorus is a good check to it, Garchomp makes a good partner so that they can overwhelm that damn lion. If rocks are up then all the better as once spdef Lando is at half hp, that's just around the kill threshold for this shark, assuming you don't get screwed over by scale shot which is why dragon fang is the first item choice. Three item choices because really, Garchomp just uses whatever item it feels like using and still makes it work because it's fucking Garchomp. In return, Zeraora also threatens the fast stuff like Dragapult and Garchomp's mortal enemy, Weavile. They both do get destroyed by scarfers but on the other hand, scarfers are not too difficult to deal with unless you mess up that badly
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 132 Def / 116 SpD / 12 Spe Careful Nature - Stealth Rock - Earthquake
- U-turn - Toxic
This mixed defense Landorus-T compresses many useful support tools for a physical breaker like Zeraora. It either invites checks to Zeraora (opposing Landorus-T, Buzzwole, Tangrowth, Rillaboom, Tapu Bulu,...) or victims (Corviknight, Slowbro, Zapdos, Ferrothorn,...) and offers easy momentum to Zeraora or other teammates, while chipping and crippling the opposition with Stealth Rock damage and Toxic on their shared checks. It also provides a more durable and reliable Electric immunity while also blanking Earthquakes for Zeraora. Toxic is also threatening to other relatively annoying Pokémon for Zeraora, such as Gastrodon and Hippowdon. This spread is designed to take on special attackers like Tapu Koko, while also helping checking Garchomp who really loves you having a Choice Band Zeraora around for a relatively free set-up opportunity.
Landorus-T is by far the safest pick on the builder for good reasons, but in this specific instance, the lack of Future Sight is the only thing preventing him from being the perfect support for Choice Band Zeraora.
Defensively, Corviknight is an amazing partner for Zeraora, compressing many support tools at once. It covers walls to Zeraora such as Landorus, Hippowdon, Garchomp, Buzzwole, and Tapu Bulu while generating momentum for its partners. It has consistent recovery and hazard removal which makes it a game-long facilitator for Choice Band Zeraora, differentiating itself from Landorus which performs a similar role. Rocky Helmet helps to chip checks to Zeraora, giving it more breaking opportunities; even with Choice Band it can struggle to pin its targets without some chip damage.
Thanks to all the voters, our winner for the best Choice Band Zeraora partner is by SLDR, congratulations and thanks for all the submissions!

I'm gonna stop hosting this project (temporary I hope), as it doesn't seem to interest enough people and it's hard to get a decent number of submissions/votes. I will try to think about how we could either hype more the project or pub it more so that new people can participate before resuming.
Hey there, this project will stop being hosting for the rest of gen 8. Thanks to all the people who gave some of their time to host it and thanks to all of those who were contributing to this project by regularly submitting and/or voting.
Here are the weekly projects that will remain open in the forum, feel free to participate in them and to contact me (doom_desire#0622 on discord) if you want to help hosting one of these:
