Pokemon LeafGreen competitive team questions

First, sorry if this isn't the right place for this topic, move it if necessary. So, is this a competitively viable team? I'm just considering Pokemon available in LeafGreen without trading or anything.

Snorlax
Moltres
Tyranitar
Magneton
Gyarados
Heracross

I know they're all fine Pokemon individually, but do they synergize well and not share too many weaknesses or overlap in too many ways? Just at a glance Fighting would rip through half the team, not sure Moltres is enough check that. Is Slowbro a viable replacement for Gyarados? I feel like he'd help with that too. I'm also interested in suggestions for movesets, Items, and Natures, and am open to just any tips generally, since I've never really raised a team in-game for anything but casual play. Thanks.

I doubt there will be any in-person events for FRLG, so it this just for completing the story? Or are you intending to compete with friends?

Because I wouldn't worry about completing the story too much. Other than needing a HM slave for the non-battle components, so long as you have decent type coverage you can get through the game with whatever you like.

Bear in mind non-Kanto Pokémon are completely inaccessible in-game until you beat the Pokémon League.

If you’re doing anything with a Tyranitar on your team in anything resembling a competitive Gen 3 setting, my first immediate point of advice is going to be to tread with caution and, if you have to, spam Leftovers on your own team for the purpose of avoiding taking repeated Sandstorm damage without any way of dealing with that. Your choices in Pokémon seem decent enough when compared to, say, an ADV OU team but I would refer to the Ruins of Alph subforum for any in-depth questions you might have about things like Natures, movesets or EVs. You have a good base for a Physical Offense team with Magneton support and possibly Will-o-Wisp Moltres for opposing physical offense (if available for use), if that’s what you were going for, but depending on what exactly you want to do with this team, that will determine what advice to seek out. If you end up seeking Fighting-Type checks that you can relatively easily obtain in FireRed & LeafGreen, bulky Psychics could be an interesting option though they’ll be weak to a physical Shadow Ball in Gen 3 still and they aren’t physical attackers for your offensive core which is why I would keep Gyarados especially if you can get Hidden Power Flying on it. With Leftovers. I can’t stress enough how important Leftovers is to a physically oriented Gyarados that also exists on a Sand Stream team.

Yeah, that's what I want to do. And I assume there's at least a possibility that it can connect in some way with Pokemon Champions.
We don't yet know quite what form Champions will actually take, and what official or custom format options will be available...

But there will probably be a way for you to play against your friends using FRLG Pokémon only. They might use modern typing and stats, though.

If you've never raised competitive Pokemon before, FRLG is 100% not the place to start. Gen 3 without Emerald's quality of life improvements is just about as hellish as getting competitive pokemon battle-ready has ever been.

Some of the difficulties you'll have to deal with:

  • Synchronize doesn't work with natures
  • The Everstone doesn't pass natures down
  • No sources of guaranteed 31 IVs anywhere
  • No bottle caps to quickly jump to 6x31
  • Flame Body doesn't speed up egg hatching
  • No power items, so unless you can find a source of Pokerus, you're gaining 2 EVs per battle.
  • If you mess up EV training your Pokemon, there is no reset button. EV reduction berries gained that property in Emerald
  • Several TMs like Earthquake are a single use
  • No easy way to level up.
Unless you want to dip your toes into RNG manipulation or glitches, I wouldn't even try assembling competitive-optimized Pokemon.

Honestly, I would just stick to casually messing around with your in-game Pokemon with friends. It might be cool to just forget these deeper systems exist and just fight like you're all oblivious middle schoolers again. Something like this squad without much more thought put into it should be a good enough time with pals.

If Pokemon Champions gets any compatibility with the game, I have to assume it's going to have some features to make this grind way, way less intolerable, so save worrying about that for then.
