POTW 4

Lapras

It's time for another POTW, and this time one you guys chose! This week we're doing Lapras. Lapras is a rather interesting bulky water. Not only does Lapras have a great supporting movepool, but it also has the unique ability to go on the offensive. Lapras has access to Curse and even Dragon Dance for boosting sets, as well as BoltBeam for deadly coverage. In 5th gen, Lapras also gained an amazing ability in Hydration. This allows him to fully heal himself in the rain with Rest. So, what's keeping Lapras in RU? Lapras's Ice typing really let's it down, leaving it venerable to SR and all the new fighting types in the meta. It also has to deal with other weather changers who can severely cripple it by taking away it's ability to heal itself.*

Lapras can be a great, unpredictable Pokemon in the rain, so how are you using it? Are you going offensive or defensive? What are you being stopped by and how are you countering these counters?

Let's get started!

I love lapras (so much that I use two in-game!)
But at the end of the day no matter how much I love lapras and his move OCEAN,
his stats are just a little lacking for offense, and his defensive typing is bad(unless your team is horribly ice weak like my in-game team with way too many dragons.)
But I will try, Just because it is lapras! My second favorite poke! ^_^

POname: vixusedlapras!

Tested Shrangs DD Lapras and it works fantastic. its basically Rest / DD / Toxic / Waterfall which suffers coverage wise but it can be very tricky to stop under Rain.

^ oh wow, and here I thought DD Lapras was outclassed by Gyarados :o I feel like Hydration works best with Curse, though. I'll start playing Lapras, too.

rotfl, I have a feeling that Lapras can pull off a Whirlpool & Perish Song combo :d Unlike previous gen, Whirlpool lasts for 4 turns minimum, which is just enough for Perish Song to complete! The only question - can Lapras stall out 3 turns with HydraRest?

Lapras has some nice bulk I must say, even if its defensive typing is balls. Started about 10 mins ago and hit the 1100 mark, saving all the replays hopefully they'll peak someones interest:

Alt: POW-L

Team to come later after I'm finished laddering.

Yea, I've been trying out the same DD set as ginganinja under the alt Laptop, and it's been doing surprisingly well. It's amazing how much special abuse it can take to stall with Toxic, despite being an offensive set, lol! Lapras (almost) Toxic-stalled out Shaymin's Seed Flares, and Lapras also tanked Gengar's Focus Blasts to knock it out.

I've only done a few matches under the name Loch Ness, but I have to say that DD+HydraRest Lapras is pretty good. I'm currently using a moveset of DD/Waterfall/Thunder/Rest. Thunder allows it to potentially 2HKO Jellicent, who would normally wall Lapras, and OHKO Skarmory and Gyarados, who can either phaze or set up on Lapras.

The only real problems it runs into are Grass and Dragon-types, Gastrodon, and Rotom-W, who are taken care of by the rest of my team.

Sounds very promising. This set can lure and kill many pokes that normally handle Lapras, such as Ferrothorn and Bulk Up Brelloom, while also trapping the enemy weather inducers that might want to switch into you, to change the weather.

The only question would be what would be the last move and the ev spread. Whirlpool, Perish Song and Rest are givens.

Toxic would probably be best in the last slot to cripple Jellicent, Gastrodon, and Water Absorb Vaporeon that are immune to Whirlpool.

Protect is also an option to annoy anything that tries to boost in order to break the HydraRest cycle, especially if you have teammates who can break through or set up on Jellicent/Gastrodon/Vaporeon. It's not like PerishPool Lapras will really be doing much other than trapping and killing, and Toxic Spikes can work to cripple the Water-immune walls.

stallbreakers, such as Mew, Sableye, and Gliscor are also problematic, so a Rain-boosted Hydro Pump seems promising. It would also seriously maim phazers like Skarmory, Heatran, and Hippowdon. I would probably pair this Lapras with a bulky Dual Screener like Virizion, Bronzong, or Cresselia to prevent 2HKOs from SE moves, which would allow Lapras to Perish Song and HydraRest.

Jellicent and Gastrodon are bitches, though. I might need to pack a Wobbuffet & Pursuiter to dispose them. In the end, PSong Lapras may require too much support to work efficiently, but let's see.
