Pokemon Trading Figure Game - Does anyone play?

As far as tabletop gaming goes, the Pokemong TFG is pretty simple but it is a fun diversion. The characters are REALLY well designed and bigger than most tabletop figures, so they make good decorations for an office desktop.

I picked up a couple starters and a booster this Christmas season and I know that an expansion is on its way. Does anyone back here play? Any tips for dominating besides "LOL, use Murkrow!" would be appreciated.

Had no idea such a thing existed.
Looks like fun actually and the models look amazing*, as long as they keep it small and don't release a thousand expansions in a year (haha yeah right).

*just looked on go-pokemon:

Damn.

yeah Pneuma, Salamence is awesome. I'm also really looking forward to the Mewtwo figure in the expansion.

One thing that is actually pretty cool about the TFG is that characters that are otherwise weak in the games are suddenly valuable as a figure. Murkrow is a common poke, part of one of the starters, but is very valuable because it carries Whirlwind and can force units back to the bench. Beedrill has an interesting attack that gives it a chance to knock out heavy hitters. Even if it misses and gets knocked out, it poisons the other poke. I have never used either pokemon in my life, but they are suddenly interesting to me because they are valuable in another variant of the game.

Considering all that, I am actually going to write some articles about this on the new gaming site I've launched. Info is in the sig. Hopefully we can find some people to play with here on Smogon and get some games going either with people who live nearby or via a webcam or something. That would be pretty cool.

Is it really fun? I was looking at it, but I don't want to waste money on something that I'm never going to play. Do they have organized tournaments or anything for this, because until then it might be hard finding some people to play with?

The game only launched this September, so there aren't any official events for it yet. There used to be a list on go-pokemon.com for official play events for 2008, all of which coincided with the TCG events. Now I can't seem to find the list I saw before. I know of at least a few gaming stores that are starting to host TFG games during their regular TCG
nights. So even though the game is new and is just starting to build a fanbase, it seems like it will catch on in time.

And here I was wondering why I haven't heard of it. :D

Some more visual candy.

The Salamence you mentioned.

Fuck yeahhhhhh

That's pretty awesome.

Even Misty.

And Murkrow does look pretty mean. 3 Movement and a 50% chance to send the opposing pokemon back to the bench?
And Zangoose has Crush Claw and Sword's Dance, possible 160 damage.

Wow the figures look pretty cool. Do you have a site that shows more figures? Lol I want to use them for desk design now =D

Wow they look great! I want to buy some now (for design not battling lol).

Loving the Charizard, Salamence, and Feraligatr. How much does one figure usually cost?

Ha! I went by this random, creepy RPG/tabletop gaming store this afternoon and they had Mudkip, Kyogre and Groudon. I picked up all three. Now I need to find Lugia...

Glad to see some interest here. We might have to get a Smogon video-chat TFG tournament going. Too good!

And wow dude, you're actually going to use it for battling lol? Hardcore Pokemon fan I'd have to say =D

Actually, I'm not really a hardcore pokemon fan. I'm a game designer and I'm trying to learn more about table-top gaming to understand the theory of good game design in general. I just happen to have already learned about competitive Pokemon from this site, so this is a good place to find people to play with.

Btw, Mudkip is a terrible figure for competition. I just think his figure is well designed and I'm a big fan of Mudkip/Swampert in general. Kyogre is decent though. His Tidal Wave attack pushes all surrounding pokemon back three spaces, while Hydro Pump is 130 power. That's more than half his base that carries a crushing attack.

I would play against someone online using a webcam but there is no way I would play in a local tourney because I am sure I would be the only person over the age of 10 there.

Starter packs are actually like $15. They come with a trainer figure + three pokemon. 3 pokemon boosters are $10 and are generally set up with one featured pokemon, one random additional pokemon and then one secret unseen pokemon. 2 pokemon boosters are about $7 and have one featured pokemon and one secret pokemon. You can also buy single pokes for $3-4 depending on the store. So you are paying 3-4 bucks per figure any way you slice it.

Also, Bioshock... I will seriously play a webcamed game if you get some figures. Sounds like fun.

So has anyone been able to pick up some figures yet? I'm available for a match today via AIM or MSN video chat. Send me a PM for my info if you are interested.

well, that is assuming that you are still at UT and that either you or I buy some! I am not sure if I will buy some, but I probably will!
