The ride home was the stark opposite of the drive to the park. Maribelle barraged her grandfather with question after question about the battle: how she did, what she could improve upon, if they could do it again soon, and more. Rutherford kept up with the onslaught as best as he was able, reassuring her that she had done well. For the first time in a long time, Rutherford's worries seemed distant, like they had in his fieldwork days.

Maribelle's questions finally ran out as she brought the car into the driveway; and the two of them sat in park, contented for the moment. As he lounged in the passenger seat, welling with pride, he thought to himself, "if only I could bottle this feeling."

After a moment, Rutherford sat bolt upright. "Gramps?" Maribelle said, concerned. "You okay?"

Rutherford scrambled for his cane as best as he could, then rushed to his feet. He looked back at Maribelle with an enthusiasm she had never seen in him before. He said to her, "Mary-girl, I'm much, much better than okay."

​

He took off, as fast as he could manage, and began to dial the lock to his old office. Was it still here, that device, or at the Academy? It'd been ages since he had done anything with that old glass orb—other matters had taken priority. Now, though, his spark of inspiration was lit anew.

There it was, in a plastic crate in the back of his office closet—his Influence Device, from all those years ago. Bringing it to his desk, Rutherford's hands moved almost on their own, making modifications with tools he hadn't touched in over a decade. They glided over the device like he had never put them down.

Maribelle appeared in the doorway, seemingly concerned. "Gramps, what's gotten in to you?" Rutherford chuckled and replied, "You have! You've given me just what I needed!"

Rutherford finished his adjustments, and handed the device to his granddaughter. "Carefully now; feel that!" Maribelle cupped the item in both hands for a moment, then said, "It's... warm. Is that good?"

Rutherford nodded enthusiastically. "Better than good, Mary-girl. Better than good."
