This was found on the Nintendo site pretty much confirming that it's going to be announced soon:

Nintendo's investor call will be happening within the day as soon as the Tokyo Stock Exchange closes. Iwata may hint at it during that. It is to be actually announced probably at E3 with both first and third party titles shown.

Highlights:
-Tentative release date of June 2012.
-Controller screen resolution of 800x500.
-Can play games, watch movies, and more without turning on the TV by just streaming them to the controllers. Can stream to multiple controllers at once.

as it stand right now i can really see it being a gaming console. sounds like its gonna be nintendos answer to the ipad.

Sounds interesting but I'm thinking this will be fairly limited due to the 3DS. Playing handheld Stream (possible name) games would cut into the 3DS' sales a hell of a lot.

After being utterly disappointed with the Wii, I can safely assume I'm going to wait a good 6-12 months after the Wii 2 comes out before I decide if I want to get it. As it stands, I can really only afford one gaming console a generation (as I have to maintain a gaming computer as well) and I don't want to waste my money on some shitty media center.

All the problems associated with a handheld controller, but on a console? Can't we just get a better Wiimote?

Considering we wont have a PS4 in a very very long time (maybe never)
This could be interesting, Im not buying it though Ive had enough experience of how crappy non-DS products from nintendo have been

I'll buy it with the same expectations I've had for every console Nintendo has made in the past decade. It will play Zelda, Metroid, a Pokemon stadium game, Mario, and some other first-party surprises. That's all I'll need from it.

Sony and Microsoft should be on track with a new console for 2014 if rumours pan out.

Really what could a PS4 do that a PS3 cant, if Sony are planning something for 2014.

Anyway to avoid being off topic, so does this thing have backwards compatability?

A PS4 could deal with the load times issue crippling this generation. I don't know how, but I'd like to think someone has been working on it for the past five years.

People said similar things with the PS2-PS3.

As for Project Cafe: I have to agree with Firestorm. I'll get it for Zelda, Mario, and a few other first party games, and I'll pick up and third party stuff that has enough appeal.

Though if Nintendo actually gets internet right this time, that'd be really nice for some games.

Yeah, the main reason I get Nintendo consoles is the fantastic first-party games.

Along with the high-quality third-party stuff like Intelligent Systems and the Pokemon games, obviously.

a screen on a controller?, oh hell naw, that's stupid, it will be expensive and heavy as fuck, i don't want a multimedia console, i just want something to play games

I wish Nintendo would stop trying to revolutionize the game industry will all this new feature bullshit, just make a damn console

Agreed, I would rather play a game on my ass, with a damn controller in my hand, not virtual reality bullshit

I saw this on another website. Nintendo's the untimate troll. They make the wii. Sony and microsoft follow, but they do that instead of this.

Anyway, If it has good games, I'll buy it.

Nintendo has confirmed that rumors circulating about a new console in 2012 are true, as a successor to the Wii is on the way.

In an investor note, the company said that it "has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011."

"We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles." it noted

Those are both first party games...

I don't get it. What's the point of a screen on the controller if you're going to play it on the TV anyway? And being single touch, I'm not sure what functions it would have, other than doing little things like tell you your position in Mariokart.

Basically, it's an over sized DS.

Pretty much this. I'm going to wait to get one though like I did with the Wii, at least until the price goes down a bit and the good starter games come down too.

From what I've heard (probably just more speculation) Project Cafe will have graphics close to the PS3 level, if not slightly above (from kotaku somewhere ~a week ago).

June 2012 is an interesting release time for a console, I'd really expect it to be pushed back until october-november like every other console the past few generations.

However, this *seems* to be a legitimate console, not just an "answer to the ipad" or replacement for the 3DS. The controller touch screen is more like an added bonus; I see things panning out much like Zelda: Four Swords Adventures (GBAs attached so multiple players can enter caves and play would move down to the GBA) or Wind Waker ("Tingle Tuner" lets a 2nd player aid the first by attaching a GBA, can place bombs/locate items/etc).

Nintendo = New Feature BS

always has

I don't see this as very new, risky, or even cutting edge at all. Sounds like they're polishing up old technology they've tried before (which is what they did with the wii). I'm really looking forward to it too.

Don't forget about the part where it mentions a "huge surprise." Seems like you people already hate this, (I guess rightfully so, The Wii has been a pretty big let-down with only SSBB and Twilight Princess to really make up for it), but I see this being the next big console for Nintendo, not some piece of shit.

I don't really like the idea of "stereoscopic 3D," though.
