HELLO it's OCTOBER's SPOTLIGHT shining down on:
LOOSSEMBLE - TTYL
(this month's blurb written by resident LOONA stan rien !)
Originally debuting as members of LOONA through the Girl of the Month project, members HyunJin, YeoJin, ViVi, Go Won and HyeJu (formerly Olivia Hye) embarked on a new path together after all LOONA members terminated their contracts with former agency BlockBerry Creative and formed Loossemble under a new agency, CTDENM, officially redebuting in 2023 with their eponymous EP with the title track Sensitive. While the circumstances revolving LOONA's temporary dissolution were unfortunate (and we wish for a OT12 reunion soon), the five members have been able to show off even more of their unique charms across 3 EPs and 2 world tours, the second of which is currently ongoing.

hello, in addition to ost october and loossemble spotlight october (stan loossemble!!) it is also Comeback October™ and Billlie are among the dozens of artists releasing new stuff this month. here are some first impressions on Billlie's latest EP - "appendix: Of All We Have Lost", released yday on all streaming platforms.

TL;DR - banger ep, banger title track, Bluerose is one of the best billlie b-sides ever and one of the best b-sides released this year. whether you're a long-time belllie've or you've never heard any of their work i highly recommend diving in. feel free to reach out to me if you'd like to discuss billlie further, and ofc you're also welcome to drop your thoughts on the ep in this thread :)

  1. remembrance candy (title track, see MV linked above) - 9.5/10 - lovely lovely song, gorgeous lyrics written by none other than absolute legend IU, masterfully performed by billlie's talented members. a rather unorthodox musical genre pick for a title track in this time and age that harkens back to the good old days of christian horse girl k-pop over more common high-energy genres oriented for intensive stage choreo, but one that i 100% appreciate. EVERYONE SAY THANK YOU MOTHER IU.
  2. trampoline - 8.3/10 - very much what i expect from a billlie b-side, very representative of their signature sound. not much to say about this one, i like it but it doesn't stand out to me as much as the other tracks. this will probably get promoted on music shows alongside remembrance candy.
  3. Bluerose - 10/10 - an absolute triumph, imo the best track on the album and up there with the very best billlie b-sides (flipp!ng a coin, overlap (1/1), B'rave ~ a song for Matilda, enchanted night ~ white night just to name a FEW - billlie take their b-sides very seriously). like trampoline this is a very good showcase of what has now become their signature sound - alternative r&b over a strong bass line with influences from city pop and funk. sua and siyoon's rapmaking is at its finest here, they set the entire mood for the track so well and especially the last chorus is just pure bliss to listen to.
  4. BTTB (Back to the Basics) - 8.0/10 - as is customary for billlie eps at this point, each one usually includes at least one "weird" track with more eclectic influences (see everybody knows a $ECRET, Mcguffins ~ who's the Joker?), and BTTB definitely fills that role here with emo influences. admittedly didn't love it on first listen but i've come to appreciate it over several listens, especially with a nice audio setup which reveals multitudes of very interesting layers and really nice production. the lyrics contain a lot of nods and easter eggs to billlie's previous works and will be a treat for longtime fans to decipher.
  5. shame - 7.9/10 - very pleasant track. while the lyrical content is very much representative of billlie with themes of self-empowerment, sonically to me it sounds slightly generic, like this would not look out of place on any twice or fromis_9 or le sserafim ep as a b-side. the slightly lower score reflects the lack of cohesion with the rest of the album but this is still a really nice song and an easy listen. this would make a fine addition to walmart's k-pop playlist (zero shade, there are some real bangers on there).
  6. dream diary ~ etching mémoires of midnight rêverie - 6.5/10 - tropical house definitely wasn't on my billlie bingo card, unfortunately i'm just not a tropical house kind of gworl and the genre as a whole has been overdone to death at this point. imo the production team has done a good job at not making the tropical house part too dominant and added plenty of layering so this does not feel entirely out of place, but it's just not for me :blobshrug: i do wish there was another album closer (ahem ahem still waiting for a proper deep house release ahem) but i'm sure someone out there will appreciate it.
OVERALL RANKING - 8.5/10 - MYSTIC STORY IF YOU'RE READING THIS PLEASE GIVE US GWSN DEEP HOUSE TEA FOR THE NEXT RELEASE. BILLLIE WOULD EAT EVERYONE UP. DO THIS FOR ME.

Hi! First of all, thank you so much for allowing me to use this platform to share my interest in Kpop. I've been doing these Kpopalypse-inspired year-end lists since 2018, but only did writeups for the entries recently. I hope you enjoy this list as much as I did! Thank you!

**************

2024 KPOP HONORABLE MENTIONS

These are songs released in 2024 that stood out to me in quality, but not to the point of making it to my favorites list. I'll also be posting a Favorites List in a few days, hope you look forward to it, too!

Notes:
- All songs are tracks with MVs released in 2024
- Songs are arranged in alphabetical order, by artist.
- My tastes in the songs are the only basis; no chart rankings, album sales, etc2.

Hope ya'll enjoy!

Aespa – Supernova

We all know how Supernova goes, yeah, it’s aespa’s biggest hit at the moment, and I like it. It’s very 2nd gen Kpop but with modern production, straightforward and consistent on its idea. Honestly not the best execution, but I appreciate all the synth work in the instrumental.

ARTMS – Virtual Angel

Phaun did a Girlypoplocke series of Pokemon Platinum and caught a Porygon which he named “Virtual Angel”. Makes sense, since Phaun is girlypop, Porygon is girlypop, and girlypops have superior music tastes.

Chung Ha – Algorithm

Chung Ha has finally figured out how to make songs that people want to actually listen to in 2024, and Algorithm is just a glimpse of her overall slayage this year. If you did not catch those two hooks in the chorus, you’re probably as stiff as a brick.

DALsooobin – Muck

After the travesty that was Tanaka-san, Subin from one of the underrated girl groups Dalshabet has finally figured out how not to let a chorus go down the drain. In Muck, she blends these sort of Annie Lennox-style verses with a cool instrumental chorus of distorted synths and 8-bit arps.

EPEX – Closer

Sadboi music done right. I guess I have some sadboi in me, too.

Fifty Fifty – SOS

We may now have a new iteration of the Fifty Fifty girls but the things that made Cupid successful are still in full display here (and even done better)—consistent beats, strong melodies, and undeniable singability. I do hope that this song isn’t a cry for help from their agency because, well, we all know how that story went.

H1-Key – Let It Burn

H1-Key does their signature mid-tempo vocals-driven sound not too far from their hit song Rose Blossom, only this time with a more rock-infused flavor. The song is made even more interesting by syncopated, almost reggae-style (but not really) guitars in the verses and memorable triplet lines in the chorus.

IVE – Crush

IVE spent most of 2024 releasing inferior versions of I AM, and I’m not complaining, it’s just a testament to the legacy of that song. Crush is the best among those attempts, with a chorus that really feels like floating in the clouds not unlike Wonyoung jumping off from that I AM plane.

(Part 2 below)

(Part 1 above)

IVE – HEYA

On the other hand, Heya tried to be a bit too fancy that it comes off confusing and messy in the first listen, but with repeated listens, you start to catch what they were aiming for, and it’s actually quite good. Of course, the biggest crime of this song is keeping the chorus harmonies for the end in an attempt at a grandiose climax, but Liz’s parts in the chorus at least make up for it.

Kim Areum – Aliens

This song is actually a recent addition, and of course it had to make into the list because of its strong harmony and melody writing. They seem to be going for a “city pop” sound (the 90’s anime cover art already gives it), but “city pop” is mostly snoozefest, whereas this one is darker and faster. Anything with a Wong Kar-wai visual aesthetic is also automatically a good song, it’s just it.

Red Velvet – Cosmic

Bass-driven boy group disco-style verses (which are so tired now, ugh) thankfully lead to a beautifully melodic chorus with a weird chord progression not too far from classic SM experimentation. Sure, the chorus might seem like one very long sentence on first listen, but subsequent listens will help you break down and organize the phrases properly in your brain, and you’ll enjoy it eventually.

The Wind – Hello, My First Love

Most of the resistance to this song probably comes from the fact that it’s by a boy group doing aegyo (and I get it, honestly), but all of that bias aside, it’s actually this year’s best attempt at doing “BFriend” (sorry TWS) and that chorus is surprisingly fleshed out and pleasant. Anyway, GFriend will be back next year and we are all super excited, but while we wait I guess we can enjoy this song in the meantime?

Tzuyu – Run Away

For her solo debut, Tzuyu released a circle-of-fifths song with JYP’s DNA all over it, and while it could have been improved by trimming some of the vocal parts, it still works overall—and a good circle-of-fifths song is always welcome in my playlists.

Xikers – Tsuki (Lunatic)

That chorus, in theory, should not really work, but the delivery and production on it just gave it the energy to make it a success. This year, Xikers pretty much have figured out how to do Kpop boy group-isms very well by leaning more into harder beats and metal-inspired harmonies while keeping that boyish, fun energy all throughout. Meanwhile, other boy groups are stuck in disco or RnB and slow beats so they can flash abs to the fangirls.

Xikers – Bittersweet

See? They even pulled off a 6/8 beat. I feel like I’m coming off as a secret xikers stan right now, but I can’t blame you for that—xikers just absolutely nailed it this year. After all their “crimes” (aka awful songs) from the previous year, I think we can finally say Xikers is anything but boring—the taste level just flipped to the positive this year. And somehow, it feels like this is not yet the end of it all …

BONUS SONG

Rose ft. Bruno Mars – APT

APT is objectively a good song; when I first heard it, I immediately was hooked by the melodic pre-chorus. That being said, it’ll also all over the place—in my FB feed, in Shorts, at my neighbors, in the office, at the Zumba class in the local gymnasium—and I’M SICK OF IT. Frankly, the hook makes me cringe now, and I just want to skip it—SKIP IT PLEASE! Its craze is just proof that most people don’t have music tastes and just go for what’s trendy.

Still, I’ll keep it in the list because I can feel that in the future, when everyone has moved on from it and has latched onto the next big song, I’ll be able to listen to it with no prejudice, because to its core, it’s a good song.

**********

So that's it! Hope you enjoy these entries! I'll be back for my Favorites List!

Here's also a Youtube playlist compiling all songs above.

Hi hi i posted a thread for my full 2024 playlist in the Studio song recommendations thread the Studio song recommendations thread

Here are just the korean songs in the list!

1. Chung Ha, R3HAB - Dream of You
I swear Chung Ha is so underrated for someone who consistently puts out catchy songs album after album, and Dream of You is no exception.

2. Shin Yun Su - Island Without The Ocean
This song was recommended to me by marillvibes . It's a slow ballad that I can imagine is the ambient music in a quiet cafe.

3. QWER - Discord
QWER is a band made of 4 Korean livestreamers, which is a rare find these days. They have a handful of songs I like to jam out to, but Discord is by far my favourite of theirs.

4. RIIZE - Get A Guitar
At one point during the year, I put various Korean songs on the Spotify song radio, and Get A Guitar kept coming up in the queue. It grew on me, earning its place on my playlist.

5. Stray Kids - BLIND SPOT
Stray Kids is a shining gem in the K-pop industry because all of their songs are composed and produced by their own members. Nevertheless, the 3RACHA unit of Skz always come up with music that sound different, yet keep the signature Stray Kids sound.

6. Stray Kids, LiSA - Social Path (Korean Ver.)
When I say Stray Kids had managed to get LiSA (famous Japanese singer; you may know her for Gurenge) to feature on one of their tracks, I had to give it a listen.

7. Gyubin - Really Like You
I previously recommended Gyubin on the K-pop song recommendations thread; while she's new to the scene, her songs sound so familiar to me, and this one easily found a place in my playlist.

8. Chung Ha - Louder
Honestly, I just never get tired of this song

9. IVE - 해아 (HEYA)
Two of IVE’s members, Yujin and Wonyoung, were members of my favourite K-pop group of all time (IZ*ONE) so I naturally followed their careers. This album featuring HEYA as the title track is in my top 3 K-pop albums of the year.

10. IVE - Accendio
Accendio is another track from the same album as HEYA. I made a more comprehensive review of the full album over on the K-pop thread here.

11. IVE - Blue Heart
Blue Heart is the third song I added to my playlist from this album. The song is clean and easy to listen to, with smooth vocals.

12. BANG YEDAM, WINTER (aespa) - Officially Cool
Another K-pop group I fell in love with over the past 2 years is aespa. Their songs often go viral, and while this one did not go viral, Winter and Bang Yedam hit it off very well in this duet.

13. KISS OF LIFE - Midas Touch
KIOF (don't ask me why their name is abbreviated to KIOF) is 2024’s breakout hit group. Their music is great, but nothing beats the stage presence that Julie and Natty command. Julie’s excitement and joy during her performances are infectious, and I'm glad to see Natty finally doing well after 9 years of jumping around reality shows trying to debut.

14. KISS OF LIFE - Nothing
Nothing more like nothing bad to say about their songs

15. KISS OF LIFE - Bad News
I'm not sure who does it, but I love the whistle notes in this song.

16. SEVENTEEN - Maestro
SEVENTEEN basically never miss, not just with their music, but also with their choreography. I love watching their footwork and the creative choreography they come up with each time they make a comeback.

17. aespa - Supernova
su su su supernova

18. NewJeans - How Sweet
o7 NewJeans your songs were great and I hope you manage to make it out of the career killing moves you made

19. NCT DREAM, HRVY - Don’t Need Your Love
NCT DREAM’s songs, compared to the rest of the NCT songs, tend to be more mellow and melodic rather than experimental wubs. Don't Need Your Love seems to be influenced by the style of music that goes viral on social media.

20. Red Velvet - Knock Knock (Who’s There?)
Red Velvet made a comeback, I listened to the album, I added my favourite

21. VALORANT, KISS OF LIFE, Mark Tuan - SUPERPOWER
Riot Games never misses with their K-pop collabs too. I really enjoyed the collab between KIOF and Mark Tuan, who otherwise I would never have imagined making a song together.

22. Gyubin, Wonstein - Scribble
After having Gyubin on my playlist for a few months I finally went to check out her other songs and ended up adding this one.

23. Red Velvet - Cosmic
Once again, Red Velvet make comeback, I listen to the album and add my favourite track.

24. ADORA - n번째 우주 (nth Universe) (My Reason to Die (Naver Webtoon)) OST
I don't remember how this song ended up on my playlist because I don't remember adding it, but I have a soft spot for OST songs and listening to it, it's not bad so I left it on

25. aespa KARINA - UP
I listened to this song on loop for about 2 hours straight. Never got repetitive, never got old. Sang along to it, even. Not to mention Karina absolutely slays with the choreo.

26. Stray Kids - MEGAVERSE
When I first heard this song, I couldn't believe it wasn't a title track because this song deserves so much more attention.

27. Gyubin - Satellite
I just added the last Gyubin song because it's great

I made a playlist too! It's got all the other non-Kpop songs in it but the Korean songs are all together so you can just skip the rest if you don't like them :)

Hi, I'm back! Before anything else, once again I would like to thank the group for this space that allows me to talk about K-pop. I truly appreciate this from the bottom of my heart.

******

Welcome to my 2024 K-POP FAVORITES LIST! :boi:

These are the top 30 K-pop songs released in 2024 that really stood out to me, I thoroughly enjoyed, and I think would be enjoyed by lots of people, too!

Once again, some notes:
- All songs are tracks with MVs released in 2024
- Songs are arranged from #30 to #1, in countdown format, because we love drama and excitement lol
- My tastes in the songs are the only basis; no chart rankings, album sales, etc2.

Hope ya'll enjoy!

(Part 1/3)

30. Ryu Ji Hyun – Get Ready! Set! Go!

Starting of our list is Ryu Ji Hyun, whose songs (at least the title tracks) have been those acoustic coffee-shop type, but actually above the average of those kind of songs. Get Ready! Set! Go! however, is in a more experimental territory for her, while still being up her wheelhouse, with it being a generally successful mix of fast acoustic drums, pianos, and cute synths. Those texturally satisfying glitchy electronic guitars, though, really are the star of the show. (Also, Ryu Ji Hyun is a cutie.)

29. Young Posse – XXL

To be honest, I don’t listen to a lot of hip hop, so I’m not gonna pretend to know what’s going on in the hip hop scene these days, but from what I’ve seen, lousy trap beats might still be a thing, so I guess these rappers need to be ashamed that some girl group manufactured by a K-pop agency actually has a hip hop song with beats that hit harder than their limp snare drums. I’m sure this is old school hip hop, because I recognize the hard beats, the scratch samples, the bass, even that funk whistle synth thing, and old school hip hop is best hip hop. Is this East Coast or West Coast? Someone please tell me, ‘cause I really don’t know. What I do know is that XXL is lots of fun, conceptually fresh and a standout in the current K-pop scene while still being successful as a pop song.

28. 1CHU – PUNK HOT

I always enjoy that Avril Lavigne-style pop punk rock sound, and anything that is a successful version of that will always make it into the playlist. 1CHU has successfully captured that in Punk Hot, featuring all the essentials: gritty guitars, fast and hard-hitting beats, high energy, and a catchy, anthemic chorus that will surely engage audiences in a concert setting. It even has a bit of unpolished feel to it, which fits the concept perfectly, too. Overall, there’s not much to analyze, just enjoy it.

27. ALL(H)OURS – SHOCK

First boy group entry of the list, coming from another boy group that looks like every other boy group. Honestly, SHOCK is packed with generic boy group-isms that should’ve repelled me—and it did, at first. But on a second listen, I was sold. How? Because everything else around it is done tastefully. First, the instrumental goes hard when it needs to, leaning into an early 2010s big room EDM vibe with a modal synth riff that, while not groundbreaking, is perfectly effective here. Second, the song stays tonally consistent, not falling into the tendency of playing random major chords that don’t fit—though that short melodic moment after the first chorus was close to doing that, yet it didn’t. Third, no random trap breakdowns or other parts that kill the momentum; all parts where it goes slow are in the right places and are used to build momentum. Finally, the hooks work—the dokkaebi hook, the kickstart the beast hook, even the whoop-whoop part is actually hype when it should be cringe. Overall, this song is proof that boy group-isms can work—and it’s all in the execution.

26. STAYC – GPT

STAYC may not have a perfect hit-miss ratio in their songs, but they’re certainly among the more reliable groups to release goods songs at the current K-pop setting. It definitely helps that they’re a group built by a song producer who actually has an amazing track record. GPT is obviously not STAYC’s best song, but it’s still a successful pop song, composition-wise—the verses are well-done and that dot dot dot dot hook in the chorus is especially catchy, I instantly repeated it on the first listen. What takes it up a notch for me is the instrumental; those synth arps and flutes in the chorus do sound great and adds some needed drama to an otherwise (too?) straightforward pop song. Also, the use of AI in its message is so smart, ChatGPT could never.

25. Awake – U_Chae

The highlight of this song for me is that intriguing instrumental breakdown after the chorus, which features a synth patch reminiscent of an East Asian plucked string instrument made to pan left and right, giving me the image of a marble ball swinging back and forth on a xylophone. Of course, this won’t work if it didn’t have a successful melody, but it did, and the overall result is quite cool. Other than that, it also joins the current trend of shorter songs (clocking in at under 2:30), which might feel abrupt to some listeners; but really, most songs just stretch out by repeating sections, meanwhile, Awake has no repeated parts other than the chorus and instrumental post-chorus, and both parts are only repeated once. This demonstrates a straightforward approach that actually feels very fresh and modern, something that I wish was also applied in choosing the artist’s stage name—because we don’t need another name with an underscore, do we?

24. Synsnake – My Soul is A Wasteland

This might be a metal song, but my pop-genre-leaning ears really enjoyed this. Metal influences have long been a prominent feature in K-pop, leading to some of my all-time favorite songs, but My Soul is A Wasteland is as metal as it can get. With its distorted electric guitars, modal melodies, and fast beats, it checks all the metal boxes; but it also includes the scream-o’s—which, while not my favorite element, aren’t a dealbreaker here. It’s a more “serious”, dramatic take, incorporating strings and soaring vocals that always fit beautifully into this style. However, if you’ve had too much of the metal-ness of it, it also provides a breather at 2:25—before it proceeds into a climactic, double-time final chorus, anyway. It’s this year’s Dreamcatcher song that Dreamcatcher, unfortunately, will never have.

23. QWER – T.B.H.

I’ve always had a soft spot for ‘anime intro’-style songs, and interestingly, some of the best iterations of that sound that I’ve heard came from K-pop, from nugus like Year7 Class1 to more established acts like GFriend and Dreamcatcher. Many versions of this sound have been done in K-pop this year, too, with varying results. To me, for a song of this type to standout, it needs to have two things: (1) compelling harmonies, definitely with a hint of melancholy to it, woven into a great melody; and (2) catchiness—it must be easy for me to sing along with it, too. Too often, these songs either have some great melodies here and there, but after the song plays, I already forgot how it sounds like; or, is catchy, but in a pedestrian, almost junior, annoying kind of way. With all that being said, the best version of this sound from 2024 is T.B.H., with its fast pace and solid melodies while spicing things up with interesting electronic breakdowns. I still wish the chorus had a stronger hook, but overall, it’s a worthy addition to the best songs of the year.

22. mimiirose – The flowers swayed

It’s nice to hear songs nowadays that still draws heavily from the 80s synth sound, even if it’s no longer the trendiest style. This timeless sound thrives on fast beats and strong melodies—two essentials for crafting great songs. The flowers swayed feels like it was written with a glittery girlypop pen, so much so that it could easily pass as a Twice track, complete with a pitch that feels almost too high for the comfort of those poor girls. Admittedly, though, I wasn’t completely sold by this in the beginning, as I was discontent of its lack of catchiness, especially with the chorus being primarily in Korean and lacking an instant hook. However, repeated listens revealed the charm in its well-crafted vocal lines, and the short synth breakdown toward the end turned out to be a highlight. It’s definitely a grower.

21. TWICE – I Got You

Of course, Twice will not be out-Twice-d by some other nugu K-pop girl group in their own lane of fast, melodic, catchy pop. After a recent string of title tracks that faltered in maintaining their stellar track record, I Got You sees the group returning to form, doing what they do best. Much like the above mimiirose song, but faster and undeniably catchier, its anthemic first chorus section is the definite highlight, accompanied by several other hooks that stick effortlessly. The song does sound more “mature” and “serious”, with lines like “we’ll make it through just like we always do” unfortunately verging on Disney territory —something I’d rather not hear in my pop songs. While I miss the playful energy of Twice’s earlier work, the strong melodies remain intact, and that’s enough to win me over. This also has Twice experimenting in their lower register, which is a pleasant change.

20. Atlantis Kitsune – Oh My!

Another song genre that works most of the time is trot, which also thrives in fast beats, high energy and strong melodies. Unfortunately, the biggest weakness of trot songs entering the pop territory is that it can sound super dated—and no one (or at least not me) wants to vibe to grandma’s playlist. Successful trot-pop hybrids like the ones from Hong Jin Young benefit from the injection of girlypop-ness, and Oh My! benefits from this too—resulting in a marriage of the best elements of both trot and pop. Its main synth riff, with a melody that is both delightfully complex yet undeniably catchy, is also a highlight.

19. BIBI, Jackson Wang – Feeling Lucky

Jackson returns with a track that channels the vibe of his excellent LMLY, featuring a fast, steady beat layered with pleasant melodies and plenty of open space in the mix. BIBI, who has previously had only boring sopngs, is a great additional to the track, and her parts might actually be my favorite, especially the pre-chorus where she is heavily featured. The track is elevated by subtle experimentation in the instrumental, with rhythmic tweaks and the addition of guitars and synths, which prevent it from slipping into monotony and give Feeling Lucky further edge to be more enjoyable. Once again, Jackson proves that among all the Got7 solo efforts, his discography, while certainly not perfect, is the only one that’s worth checking out.

18. NMIXX – Love Is Lonely

So much of NMIXX is all about doing change-ups! yet their better songs are always those that stick to one general idea and execute it in the best way possible. This just proves that the concept of basically remixing multiple snippets of songs that have no relation to each other whatsoever will never really work outside the rare specimen that is Bohemian Rhapsody—well, maybe it did work for NMIXX once in Dash, but it’s still not that great. Love Is Lonely is now officially NMIXX’s best song, and that’s because it’s built on a single idea—this time, that guitar loop that runs almost throughout the whole song—and everything else in the song is just added to bring up that idea to its full potential. If this does not teach them to ditch the change-up concept and focus on consistency instead, then I don’t even know what will.

17. Cooing – REC

Have I mentioned that I’m obsessed with the circle-of-fifths progression? Because I totally am. You’ll find more songs further in this list that utilize this chord progression, and that’s because, honestly, it works like 98% of the time. I also love songs that heavily feature strings and use them successfully—strings just give songs lushness and drama that I can’t just get enough of. The combination of these two ideas makes me nostalgic for the days of Lovelyz and GFriend, and it’s sad that this sound has become pretty rare in K-pop nowadays. So if you’re like me who crave that combination of circle-of-fifths and strings, REC might satisfy this craving for you, too.

16. xikers – We Don’t Stop

Oh wow, it’s xikers again—Aye yo let’s go! The first 1:20 minutes of hearing this song for the first time was probably the most hype moment I’ve had recently as an introvert who spends most of his time at home. The combination of the rock guitars, rapid-fire raps and hard beats just work in creating a contagious hype energy, sealing the deal—this is a FUN song. Okay, that short breakdown on the second verse I’m not a fan, but it’s quick enough that it doesn’t spoil everything else. There’s still more to love, too, like that fun “break it break it down” whisper hook in the post-chorus. They even slow things down towards the end, YG-style, but it still works! You can tell the group enjoys the song, too—in their live performances, you can spot that one member who looks like Bobby’s son really feeling it and having fun. Like I said, xikers really nailed it this year.

15. ITZY – Imaginary Friend

So there’s something that ITZY has done now for two consecutive years: first, they release a title track that sits more in their usual bratty girl crush sound, one that usually sucks, and then, they release another track that is more melodic and “vulnerable”, which obviously ends up far more superior. Imaginary Friend is that latter track, following the footsteps of last year’s excellent Bet On Me, focusing more on substance rather than style—an unexpected but very welcome path for ITZY. If this is now how ITZY will be doing their yearly releases, I definitely won’t be complaining because at least we are guaranteed a great song every year; but of course, it will be even better if both songs will actually be great, ya know?

14. KAVE – You

Here’s another circle-of-fifths song! This song thrives on its straightforward appeal—fast and consistent beat, effective melodies, and touches of interesting guitars in the mix. The slightly eerie strings in the intro, which also return in the bridge, are also particularly intriguing. It’s a testament to a good song if it can stand on its songwriting bones and not rely on gimmicks to succeed. With all that said, let’s just ignore the lyrics, though, since they don’t even make sense, and we don’t come to K-pop for the lyrics, do we?

13. Chuu – Strawberry Rush

Strawberry Rush is probably the song that most represents Chuu’s branding—it’s super Pop, with touches of punk that fits her mischievous energy, but it also has a very melodic and singable chorus that calls back to her previous songs like Aliens, enhanced by engaging hooks all throughout. The quasi-raps seem to be polarizing, but I honestly love them—they raise up the energy and fit the overall concept. I also love the 8-bit touches in the instrumental, and the entire package gives the image of Chuu being that character that is so girlypop and holds an oversized weapon a la Tinkaton; the MV, while unfortunately infested with AI, doubles up on this image, too. Overall, another solid release from Chuu, and we love Chuu here, of course.

12. Rescene – Love Attack

The star of this song is certainly the chorus—it’s the best IVE chorus of the year, and in 2024 it’s refreshing to hear a chorus that is actually a chorus, as in “sung by a group in unison” (or at least it was produced to sound that way). However, I would also like to make a case for the verses. Sure, they come off messy on first listen, but you’ll get them after a few more plays. I also appreciate how the pre-chorus only went for four bars and kept things straightforward. Most of all, I dig the distorted guitars and deep bass, which add a darker edge that, interestingly, complements the light, dreamy energy of the chorus. Between this one and Uh-Uh, I now have a good sense of their sound, and I’m excited to hear more from them.

11. UNIS – Curious

Take the instrumental of Monsta X’s Beautiful Liar, give it a girl group makeover, replace the vocal lines with more fleshed out melodies, and BOOM—one of the best songs of the year. Once again, though, I was not immediately sold on this at first listen, as the first verse plus the monotonous chorus really wasn’t that satisfying, and I felt that the song was hard carried by those revving guitars. The magic, however, starts at 1:46, when the melodies suddenly start getting better, and I was intrigued! Then the bridge follows, and it gets even better! Suddenly, the simplicity of the chorus makes sense as balance to the complexity of the verses. I’m so glad I gave this song a chance, and I’m also excited to see where UNIS will go from here.

(Part 3/3)

10. Jin – Running Wild

The biggest mystery in K-pop history is how BTS got big with arguably one of the most generic discographies (though we do know how that happened, but I digress). Thankfully, we’re now past the era of BTS being everywhere, and the playing field in K-pop now is slightly not as skewed to their favor anymore. I’ve always set low expectations for BTS releases, including the members’ solos, and so far, my expectations have generally been met. So, imagine my surprise when Jin, out of all the members, would be the one to actually impress, up to the point of securing a spot in my year-end favorites. Yes, I did notice that he has been going to this musical direction in the recent years, but I genuinely didn’t think it would lead to something as fantastic as Running Wild. At least someone in the team actually has some taste.

9. Taemin – Horizon

Taemin’s solo career has been stuck on emulating Michael Jackson (and almost every male solo from then on tried to follow this concept, too), and while the songs are decent, none of them were really able to reach that pantheon that is the Favorites Lists. I’m sure Taemin himself knows this too, and I can only imagine him looking at his groupmate Key’s better discography, especially last year’s Killer, and muttering sulkily, “I want something like that, too”. Thus, Horizon was born—another excellent take on that darker 80s synth sound that always yield great results. Taemin still gets to dance the way he does, sing in his usual sultry, “squeezed” style, while we get his best song ever.

8. Solar – Colors

Solar is like Taemin, too—we’re all aware of her talent, it has long been established already, but the songs just … don’t cut it. Solar must be tired of working with lazy producers who don’t even try to write actual songs for her just because she can “make it work” anyway with her vocals, and she must have dreamt of releasing songs that are actually worth the time. One day, she went into a gay club and heard their voguing dance numbers, and then exclaimed, “I want something like that, too! I’m tired of belting, I already know I can sing!” Hence, Colors. Look at that, her best song is the one that is the least vocals-driven—point proven.

7. ILLIT – Cherish (My Love)

Gosh, ILLIT really are the biggest copycats of this generation, aren’t they? First, they copied the whole concept of NewJeans, from the styling, to the number of members, to the members being attractive that brands wanted them as models, etc. And now, they copied Fifty Fifty’s SOS, but made it faster, used a circle-of-fifths progression, and gave it an addicting hook chorus a la T-ara style which I surely miss? How preposterous! Also, they copied The Beatles’ Abbey Road photo in the cover pic of their album! It’s almost like the girls are deliberately copying everything and have autonomy over their concepts, unlike everybody else! How can I even—Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch—like this song? It’s morally wrong to enjoy something—Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch—that came from a bunch of thieves. Good thing I—Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Cherish my love! Okay, who cares, I love this. Not even God can stop me …

6. Chung Ha – I’m Ready

Chung Ha is also another one who discovered gay club voguing anthems and wanted one of her own, after years of being handed with mediocre songs. This resulted in the best song in her entire discography, and the second part of the fantastic vogue anthems trilogy (*wink wink*) of 2024. While Colors had more sing-talking because Solar was that sick of having to prove she can sing, I’m Ready is more melodic, yet also catchier, which I ended up preferring after debating on it for a long time. Its main refrain, the “I’m ready to get this” part, does verge into repetitive territory at times, but the whole song is just so impactful for that to be a dealbreaker. For that, all that’s left to say is: SLAAAAYYYY.

5. yurisa – NYA?

We now take another short break on the gay club anthems and head into early 2000s weeb music in our next entry—wait, don’t scroll yet! I know, I know, you now think I’m sick in my head for placing a weeb song in this highly reputable, prestigious and totally legitimate year-end Favorites List, but let me raise my case, okay? First of all, in this current music scene where everyone is doing lousy trap beats, snail-pace tempos, and [insert boring music trend], the high energy of “early 2000s weeb music” (which is really just Eurodance but with anime high-pitch vocals) is an oasis in the scorching hot desert. Of course, I won’t even look twice at this song if it didn’t deliver on the most important element of music, which is melody—but it did, with standout parts like the first verse and, most importantly, the two-part chorus. NMIXX should also take notes from this song on how to do change-ups, because this has lots of them, and they’re all done very well. Everything is just so chaotic and extra with the orchestral hit samples, vocal chops, and other instrumental touches, but it’s also anchored by an effective chord progression, and the overall execution was just so thoughtful and deliberate. The whole experience feels like an insane but fun rollercoaster ride, and while you may not want to do a second round in the rollercoaster because you just threw up, NYA?, on the other hand, is something that you’ll want to replay.

4. ONF – Bye My Monster

The ever reliable boy group ONF lands 4th on our list, and is the highest ranking boy group overall for this year. It’s no surprise, since ONF is among the top active boy groups in terms of song quality (with TXT probably competing with them). ONF has worked with MonoTree since their debut, and just by running through their discography, you can tell that there’s so much sophistication and high taste level in their songs. Bye My Monster also succeeds in the change-ups (NMIXX, take notes)—from the slower, jazzy first verse, the rock band chorus, the various orchestral sections, and even a short dancehall part in the second verse—and weaves them seamlessly through gorgeous melodies and intricate harmonies. Using Rachmaninoff in the post-chorus also adds another layer to the angsty but grand mood they were going for, and let me segue a bit to say that sampling, when done right, is still creative, because it takes musicality and taste to actually choose what to sample and how to use sample. There’s lots of great parts in this song, but I’ll just highlight that final chorus: when the members took turns in delivering their lines (and the vocals had a little bit of panning in the mix), that was genius. Overall, an excellent song that also caters to the sadboi in me *weeps*

3. aespa – Whiplash

And now we’re back with the final part of the voguing anthem trilogy, with a title that already speaks on what you’ll get after listening to it—Whip-whiplash. I’m sure everyone has heard of this song already, but for the purpose of this post, let’s talk about its selling points. First, that bass—very cool, instantly impactful, produced to perfection as expected from SM. That bass riff is just so great, that there’s so much pressure for everything else to be as excellent, because when something goes wrong and the song screws up, it’s on them, the bass is innocent. Thankfully, the topline also delivered, with a great balance between the monotonous sing-talk parts and the more melodic sections, all of which are equally memorable. The song ends up as a more “fashion” take on Viviz’s Untie last year, and the whole package is just so streamlined and restrained, yet still serving the drama. This is first aespa song ever that I’m instantly sold, and I hope to see more of this from aespa in the future.

2. IVE – Accendio

IVE may have not delivered the best IVE chorus of 2024 (see #12), but they’ve instead served us with one of the coolest songs of the year, and that more than makes up for it. That opening synth riff that runs throughout the entire track is hauntingly intriguing, setting the tone that was kept consistent all throughout. The dancehall beat and drum sample choices give it a touch of industrial music, most notably showcased on that left-field but perfectly fitting bridge. As for the topline, once again, there’s an excellent balance between the girl group-style raps and the melodic sections, and the sing-talk chorus is super catchy and surprisingly effective (I love Wonyoung’s delivery, especially). The whole package offers a witchy, girlypop vibe, successfully represented by its MV, too, which I also thoroughly enjoyed. IVE is definitely among the reliable girls, and with the quality of their releases, their success feels completely well-deserved.

So that was my 2nd favorite K-pop song of 2024. What song comes out on top, then? Drum roll, please...

1. STAYC – Stay WITH me

Oh wow, a fan song topped the list. A fan song, when throughout history, all previous iterations of fan songs have been snoozefest ballads. What has happened to me?

But yeah, Stay WITH me is my favorite K-pop song of 2024, it’s just it. I was honestly in denial, even up until last night. But now, I’m locking it in. So, I’ll talk about why.

Well, the reason is precisely because of the same fact that it’s a fan song—or rather, the direction they took in making a fan song. Rather than boring their fans to death with a ballad, just like everyone else have previously done, STAYC decided to create something that interacts with their fans instead. Let’s watch below live performance and observe.

First of all, the song is upbeat and in a faster tempo, which instantly livens up the energy of the room. The crowd cheers for them during the intro at 01:58, showing that they’re already hyped even before the vocals start. Throughout the song you can catch lots of line that are deliberately written to generate a call-and-response effect with the audience, such as “Stay with me until the end” (02:58, you can hear the crowd sing this line, too) and “Come come come with me” (03:06, the audience also sings along). Of course, this call-and-response effect won’t work if the melodies were a slouch, but they also nailed it with the melodies. This is because the whole song has a compelling chord progression as a foundation, and they built on it masterfully (this was actually what sold me of the song initially). The best line for me is “Na na nan neoman isseumyeon dwae”, but almost all parts are memorable, and this is due to excellent melody and lyric writing.

If you look at STAYC's discography, you’ll see that their songs are generally very production-heavy—interesting synth patches, polished drum samples, lots of instrumental tricks. Stay WITH me is different, in that the instrumental actually steps back a bit to allow for the songwriting to shine. You can hear a good guitar riff there, too, but overall, it really didn’t need to do too much, and it was just there to support the songwriting. To me, this means there was a confidence on its songwriting, and it was the right call.

Most K-pop songs are meant to be performance pieces, and I’m sure we enjoy watching our faves do their crisp choreographies and facial expressions. However, there is also magic to songs that engages with the fans, just like what Stay WITH me did, and this is something very refreshing in the K-pop landscape. If we go back to the video, you can see that this is not the usual K-pop performance—this is a close celebration between a group of singers and their (small but decently-sized) crowd of admirers. It was less about delivering a spectacle and more about creating a shared, intimate moment. Just watch the cheers after the performance, and you’ll (hopefully) see my point.

Finally, I just want to add that Stay WITH me also feels like a great karaoke song to sing together with friends. You don’t need to perfect every note to sing it; you can just have a great time. To me, this singability is one that's shared by the best songs, and this certainly made Stay WITH me become my favorite K-pop song of 2024.

******

So, that's it, my 2024 K-Pop Favorites list! I hope you enjoyed it, and maybe picked a couple of songs that you may have not heard of before. If not, then it's fine, too, because music taste is subjective, after all!

Here is a Youtube playlist of the top 30 songs, sorted in descending order. Also, I made a Spotify playlist with all the top 30 plus the honorable mentions!

Once again, thank you for your time and for giving me this space to share my love for K-pop. Happy holidays!

10. Jin – Running Wild

The biggest mystery in K-pop history is how BTS got big with arguably one of the most generic discographies (though we do know how that happened, but I digress).

So, that's it, my 2024 K-Pop Favorites list! I hope you enjoyed it, and maybe picked a couple of songs that you may have not heard of before. If not, then it's fine, too, because music taste is subjective, after all!

This month's spotlight song is:
IVE - REBEL HEART
IVE always hits for me. This song is no different. The lyrics especially hit harder knowing that IVE and especially Wonyoung have been the target of incessant rumours and hate comments since debut. To be able to carry on with their lives not showing any sense of worry or stress, and then put out this banger of a song with the lyrics "love me, hate me / you will never be never be never be me" is especially powerful.
