PS3

Several reasons to get a PS3 over a 360:
  • Playstation network is free. Xbox Live is $5 a month. That being said, Xbox Live is much better as a service for providing game demos and whatnot, which may or may not matter to you.
  • The Playstation 3 is a much better piece of hardware. Although Xbox failure rates have been somewhat curbed with later iterations of the system, the same has happened with the PS3 as well.
  • In terms of exclusives, I think you'd like the Playstation 3 better than the Xbox 360. The 360 does have some nice exclusives like Gears of War and Halo, but those are first-person shooters, which you've said you're not a huge fan of. Playstation 3 has Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted 2, and Ratchet and Clank, which are third-person. Valkyria Chronicles is also a good exclusive if you're into SRPGs.
  • The Playstation 3 is much better in terms of supporting third-party hardware. The Xbox only takes first-party memory cards and hard drives, and those first-party items are super-inflated in terms of price. ($30 for a 512 MB memory card, no thanks.) Playstation 3 accepts any 2.5-inch (laptop-sized) hard drive that has a FAT32 partition, and you can get 500 HDDs for $90 last time I checked if you ever find that you need more space. Heck, you can even hook up an external USB hard drive. The Playstation 3 also works with any standard USB controller (though it doesn't work with Xbox 360 controllers because they require a special driver, this was probably deliberate on Microsoft's part). This is a boon if you're into 2D fighters. If you want a 6 face button style controller for playing 2D fighters, there is a $40 Xbox 360 controller available, but with the Playstation 3 you can get a Sega Saturn-style controller, which is perfect for 2D fighters in my opinion. The Playstation 3 should also work with just about every bluetooth headset or keyboard you can buy; if you already have a bluetooth headset for your phone or something, then you don't even have to buy an additional headset.
The only things that the Xbox 360 has going for it are a handful of (admittedly good) FPS games like Gears of War and Halo as well as XBL if you really like the XBL platform or have a large network of Xbox-owning friends to play with. The Playstation 3 has a much better library (in my opinion), and is all around a much better piece of hardware. I would consider buying one myself if I hadn't just bought a new gaming PC.

Also, with regard to game recommendation, you said you don't like FPS games, but is there a specific genre that you particularly like? Based on your mention of SC4, you might also like Street Fighter IV and BlazBlue, and if you like western RPGs, you might enjoy Fallout 3. Dragon Age is also a good western RPG but if possible I recommend playing it on the PC since the control scheme is better. Assassin's Creed II and Uncharted 2 are some of the best the platform has to offer.

Kikuichimonji, although the PS3 is a better value, you're definitely wrong on #3. The reason he's considering a 360 is the opposite. The 360 has more variety than the PS3 by far. I think he likes RPGs although he hasn't really answered the question of what types of games he likes a all, even though that's the most important factor in choosing a console to buy.

As for jRPGs:

360
Tales of Vesperia
Lost Odyssey
Blue Dragon
Infinite Undiscovery
Magna Carta 2 (Korean RPG)
The Last Remnant

PS3
Valkyria Chronicles (Strategy RPG)
Disgaea 3 (Strategy RPG)
Cross Edge (Strategy RPG)
Demon's Souls
Ar Tonelico III (sometime 2010)
White Knight Chronicles (sometime 2010)

Multiplatform
Eternal Sonata
Star Ocean: The Last Hope (February 2010 on PS3)
Enchanted Arms
Final Fantasy XIII (March 9th, 2010)
Resonance of Fate (jp name: End of Eternity, sometime 2010)

Hi guys, sorry that I was being vague about my preferences of genre. As I have said, I'm not a huge fan of FPS (the only FPS that I've truly played is the Metroid Prime series, and even I have short attention spans playing it). I pretty much like everything (except sports games), it's just that I have the strongest preference for RPG's, so go ahead, suggest platformers/third person shooters as well or whatever you want. I also found out that the PS3 Phat can run Ubuntu, so I thought that was neat (though I hear it's slow). Yeah, I'm inclined to get a PS3 at the moment.

Yeah, I recently bought a PS3 from eBay (it's an 80GB PS3 Phat with backwards compatibility, although I wasn't intending to buy one that has BWC but the deal was good anyway), and I'll be getting 5 games plus an extra controller (all for about $330 US!). Among the games is Little Big Planet, and the other four I plan to trade at EB Games as I'm simply not interested in them. I kind of lost interest in buying Soul Calibur 4, and I won't be buying too many games. So here's my list of games that I plan to have:

-Little Big Planet
-Batman Arkham Asylum
-Valkyria Chronicles/Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
-FF13 (the main reason why I got a PS3 :p)

I'm actually trying to decide between Valkyria Chronicles and Motorstorm 2. Valkyria Chronicles seems to be the kind of game that I would like very much (judging by what I saw from the IGN video review, it's basically Fire Emblem but with a third-person shooting element), but it's more expensive than Motorstorm 2 (I think). I'm trying to reduce the budget on my games as much as possible, and on the other hand, Motorstorm 2 has online and multiplayer play. Is Valkyria Chronicles significantly better than Motorstorm 2 (as sort of implied by the IGN reviews, though I haven't read VC's written review yet), or do both games rock so much that I should get both?

Get Valkyria Chronicles. It's not much more expensive than Pacific Rift. I remember seeing both for $30 each. Now, what games are you trading in? Link to he eBay auction?

Also, yes, VC is $19.99 so I'm not sure why you think it's expensive.

You can even order online with free shipping using the coupon SAVER.

I plan on trading all but LBP. The issue about VC/Motorstorm 2 prices is not because I can't afford them, but rather I'm trying not to spend too much money on PS3 stuff. I may not have too much time to play all of these games, so I'm trying not to make unnecessary purchases here.

Then get VC over Motorstorm. There's a new Motorstorm coming out anyway. I'm assuming you're in the US with this though. Also, not sure how willing GameStop will be to take in European games. All the games in that auction show the EU version aside from Top Spin 3.

Also, if you're connecting it to an HDTV or monitor, you'll want to buy the cable from MonoPrice now so it gets to you before the PS3 does.

How would you know if the games are EU version or not? By the way, I'm in Canada, not the US.

The games have the European age rating symbols on them. If you're in Canada, you're kinda screwed for Valkyria Chronicles. Not sure how cheap it is here. If you're willing to wait, you could order it through GamesForCanada which would come to $25 USD. You don't really have any long-lasting games on your list.

You should still order those Monoprice cables now. It takes about a week to get here where I live.

You'll get probably about $25 - 30 for the 4 games you're going to trade in (if they take all of them in).

I'm planning on buying VC off eBay then (in Canada, it costs about $45 CAD in retail stores, which is about $42-43 US. I don't think I'll be needing the cable since I don't have an HDTV. I'm not too worried about the games being European as the PS3 is region-free for PS3 games.

I just meant they would be an issue for trading in. Although I have seen an EB carrying Motostorm's EU version. Also keep in mind that DLC for North America will not work with the EU versions of the games.

But I can still download new levels for Little Big Planet right (since they are user-made)? I believe LBP gives you access to a global community, so...I should be fine right?

Yes, user levels are fine. Just stuff on PS Store won't be unless you make a UK account. To be honest, those are probably NA versions. The picture is just a collage of stock images. They probably grabbed it off Google without thinking.

Awesome. Well, I ordered Valkyria Chronicles off eBay (cheaper than at any store around here) from a seller whose feedbacks say that he delivers quickly (I just hope so!). There might be a chance that my local EB Games won't be having Batman Arkham Asylum for sale, but whatever; I plan to trade my 4 other games for store credit at least anyway. Thanks for all your help guys!

If you're willing to ship games out, you could put those games on Goozex and then request Batman Arkham Asylum with the points you get.

If your a fighting game fan...

Tekken 6
Viruta Fighter 5
Super Street Fighter 4 (which will be out soon)
Blazblue (as mentioned before)
Dragonball Z Raging Blast (if your into that kind've thing)

Racing

Gran Turismo 5 (The only one worth playing)
Need for Speed Shift

I recommend the other ones that people have mentioned as well, but because I haven't played them or previous incarnations, I can't really give you a good overall estimate on how good they'll be.
