Rules​
  • Follow all rules listed here.
  • Schedule via Smogon VMs. It's easier for us to make decisions for activity calls when we can actually see what went down with scheduling.
  • If you are unable to schedule with your opponent, please let your managers know ASAP so they can communicate that to us or the other team's managers for a potential substitute.
  • Substitutions may be made after a week has started. When making a substitution, please tag myself, the managers of the opposing team, and all of the players affected by the substitute to ensure that everyone is made aware. Players who have already played in the week or were subbed out in the same week cannot be subbed back in.
  • If a match remains incomplete by the time of the deadline, it will be subject to an activity call.
  • Replays are mandatory. Not only are they useful for confirming wins, they contribute to usage stats and allow the people who couldn't watch the games live to watch them later.
  • All players must conform to the username requirements specified here. In short, alts must be voiced on the Smogtours server, and/or closely resemble the player's Forum Name in an identifiable way.

We start this prediction format with what is probably the perfect example of its limitations: a heavy 8–4 win for the Bruxishes, despite the Altarias being, in my opinion, the clear favorites to win the tournament.

The Bruxishes feature some of the most expensive players in the entire tournament, whereas the Altarias opted for a different approach, targeting highly experienced players who came at a lower price because they were bought outside of their main tiers.

It's also interesting to note that the SV matchups remain perfectly balanced at 2–2. This reflects the current state of the SV player pool quite well: it is very homogeneous, and almost everyone has a realistic chance of winning their game.

We'll see how it goes and whether these price-based predictions can prove my gut feeling wrong !

A very close matchup between two teams that didn't field the most expensive lineup possible for Week 1.

This matchup features the largest price gap between two opposing players: ThatOneApple vs. PHB11677. However, the contest is much closer than the prices suggest, as the difference in cost is largely due to the timing of their nominations during the auction.

I'd say the Vigoroths' roster is more balanced in terms of player prices (9/12 players in the 11-16k range), which is often the case with Vy's drafts. In contrast, the Rhydons' roster features several very expensive players alongside a number of 3–4k buys (5/12 in the 11-16k range). It will be interesting to see which approach proves more successful over the course of the tournament !

This prediction format isn't ideal for the Fiends, as they have the largest roster in the tournament, but it's still interesting to look at:

We can note a heavier investment in the older generations for the Floatzels, particularly with their 41.5k RBY–GSC core. This is interesting because those tiers are heavily knowledge-based but also prone to high variance, making them especially worth following.

The Fiends' two most expensive players (cen344uu and xSuko) are both facing opponents who cost more than themselves. They will need to assume their roles of most expensive players of the team and exceed expectations in Week 1 if they want to prevent this matchup from ending in a loss.
