Pyroar is a strong special attacker with a solid STAB combination that can also act as speed control against slower breakers like Charizard, Rotom-F, and Sawsbuck. Fire Blast is the preferred STAB attack for its greater power, allowing Pyroar to always 2HKO foes like Tinkatuff and Gogoat, though Flamethrower is much more consistent for revenge killing purposes, dealing with faster but frailer Pokemon like Haunter and Rotom-F. Tera Blast is Pyroar's Normal STAB option due to its flexibility, functioning either a Normal STAB attack or a Tera type STAB attack. Will-O-Wisp cripples and chips down switch-ins like Klawf and Lumineon. Hyper Voice can also be used over either of these moves as a slightly more powerful and consistent Normal STAB attack. Taunt shuts down status attempts from foes like Skuntank and Misdreavus as well as recovery attempts from Pokemon like Quaxwell and Dunsparce while also denying entry hazards from Pokemon like Masquerain and greedy Carbink. Tera Ground allows Pyroar to threaten out the Rock- and Fire-types that resist its STAB attacks like Carbink, Klawf, and Houndoom while also allowing it to check Electric-types like Ampharos and Electrode. Tera Normal boosts Pyroar's damage output, allowing to do more damage to Water- and Fire-types like Golduck and Camerupt while removing its Water and Ground weaknesses. Lastly, Tera Grass functions similarly to Tera Ground, trading the latter's ability to hit Fire-types super effectively for better matchups against Raichu, Whiscash, Basculin, and Alolan Dugtrio.
Pyroar is heavily effective on offensive builds that focus on wearing down shared checks. Despite it seeming like bad synergy, Fire-types like Charizard and Houndoom are recommended, as they can help force in and wear down shared checks that lack reliable recovery, like Carbink and Whiscash. Pyroar can also form a powerful offensive core with Water- and Ground-types like Golduck and Alolan Dugtrio, since they threaten the Rock- and Fire-types that Pyroar does not like. In return, Pyroar can threaten out their switch-ins, like Gogoat and Dartrix, while helping wear down a shared check in Misdreavus. Foes like Dugtrio and Choice Scarf Lycanroc-N can consistently force out a Pyroar that has not Terastallized, so switch-ins to them, such as Dachsbun and Gabite, are appreciated. Dachsbun can heal chip damage Pyroar has sustained with Wish, while Gabite provides entry hazards to wear down switch-ins that do not run Heavy-Duty Boots, like Quaxwell and Ampharos.
