[Pros]

Amazing power with 125 base Attack and STAB Hi Jump Kick.

Good Speed.

Great coverage moves and U-turn.

Regenerator, which allows it to use a drawback free Life Orb.

Usable Special Attack, allowing it to use moves such as Hidden Power Ice and Grass Knot.

[Cons]

It is frail and provides no defensive synergy to a team.

Its STAB move makes it lose half of its life if a Ghost-type comes in, and Ghost-types are everywhere.

Fighting resists are very common, making Hi Jump Kick less potent

Not that fast, considering it gets OHKOed by anything that outspeeds it.

[Set Recommendations]

name: Wallbreaker
move 1: Hi Jump Kick
move 2: Knock Off
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: U-turn / Hidden Power Ice / Grass Knot
ability: Regenerator
item: Life Orb
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly / Naive

Set Comments

 • Classic wallbreaker, but needs somewhat good prediction because it's STAB is not easily spammable in this metagame
 • Regenerator and great Speed are its main advantages over other wallbreakers, making sure it sticks around long enough to give defensive cores a hard time as long as it's played correctly
 • Knock Off covers Ghost-types mainly, but Psychic-types as well
 • Stone Edge covers Flying-types and Togekiss
 • U-turn preserves momentum and is the best option if there are too many checks to Mienshao on the opposing team
 • Hidden Power Ice is for Garchomp and Gliscor
 • Grass Knot is for Hippowdon
 • Stealth Rock helps get OHKO/2HKOes
 • Pokemon to switch into the things that give Mienshao trouble, such as Azumarill, Venusaur, Ghost-types, and Hippowdon

Check and Counters

 • Azumarill
 • Venusaur
 • Sylveon
 • Physically defensive Hippowdon
 • Gliscor
 • Aegislash
 • Gourgeist
 • Trevenant
 • Defensive Gyarados
 • Tentacruel
 • Any faster Pokemon can usually OHKO Mienshao
 • Priority

Yeah, can confirm that Fake Out's not great. It's not a terrible move, nice chip damage is nice, but the fact remains that Mienshao does have a fair amount of 4MSS. It needs its STAB, and Knock Off for the Ghost 'mons that'll try to switch in. Stone Edge is needed for some more muscle against those that resist HJK [the main move that it spams and wins games for you with if there are no ghosts + you don't miss], and I'd honestly say that it really, really wants U-Turn to abuse its Regenerator to its maximum capacity, doing nicely on Voltturn teams [which are particularly good with Mega Gengar in the tier]. Hidden Power Ice is alright, but the nerf hurts Mienshao, particularly since its special attack will be uninvested.
0 SpA Mienshao (Move 1) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 192-228 (53.7 - 63.8%)
0 SpA Mienshao (Move 1) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Gliscor: 212-252 (72.8 - 86.5%)

^ Just a few examples. Nobody runs no investment on their Gliscor.

Curious, what exactly is Grass Knot for? Swampert hasn't been popular since fourth gen, and he's the only one that majorly comes to mind for me.

That said, is this all that Mienshao can do in OU? In UU it had a tonne of sets; choiced, Baton Pass w/ Substitute, and probably others. Not that XY OU = BW UU, of course.

Grass Knot 2HKOes physically defensive Hippowdon. Choiced sets are terrible now, with ton of Ghost-types or Fighting resists around, and SubPass is bad as well, as Mienshao is too easy to wall with just two attacking moves.

This is ready for QC checks btw.

Talonflame is probably one of the most common responses I've seen to Mienshao, you could probably mention that in the faster pokemon section of Counters as well as things like Gengar (and Mega Gengar)

2/3

Also Choice is terrible with the existence of MegaGengar in particular, which can just trap you and then proceed to nuke you after something like a failed HJK. I would mention Poison Jab could be used over Stone Edge. You lose out on Talonflame a bit more, but you get the jump on Azumarill and Togekiss. Weird how it doesn't learn EQ either.

QC 2.5/3.

I kid.

I'm wondering why Reckless hasn't been mentioned at all in this. Mienshao's power with Reckless HJK is just ridiculous:

252 Atk Life Orb Reckless Mienshao High Jump Kick vs. 224 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 183-216 (55.9 - 66%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Reckless Mienshao High Jump Kick vs. 224 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 141-166 (43.1 - 50.7%) -- 49.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery (Even scarfed Mienshao can 2HKO Skarm...)
252 Atk Life Orb Reckless Mienshao High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon: 208-246 (49.5 - 58.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock (Don't even need to run grass knot)

It smashes bulky resists hard:

252 Atk Life Orb Reckless Mienshao High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Azumarill: 194-229 (48 - 56.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Life Orb Reckless Mienshao High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Dragonite: 168-199 (43.5 - 51.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

It dies very quickly, true, but the brute force of that HJK should not be underestimated. The recovery from Regenerator is nice but if you want a wallbreaker Reckless really is the way to go.
