[QC Rejected (1/3)] Gourgeist-A

[Pros]

Shares its typing with Trevenant, but is faster.

Faster than Gourgeist-H and L. Bulkier, and has more offensive presence than Gourgeist-S.

Frisk removes mind-games with item based sets

[Cons]

Cannot survive certain threats that Gourgeist-H can without sacrificing the ability to OHKO back, such as Life Orb Starmie's Ice Beam, so a tanking set is better left to the -H form.

90 base attack is sub-par

Not as fast as Gourgeist-S, so a support set is better left to them.

Requires Prediction to use to its full potential due to poor typing for its role

Just missed out on the 85 base speed teir

[Set Recommendations]

Gourgeist-A @ Choice Band
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 108 HP / 252 Atk / 148 Spe
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SpA)
- Seed Bomb
- Shadow Sneak
- Rock Slide/Phantom Force
- Explosion/Trick

 • Jolly can also be used to add more speed, at the cost of some attack power.
 • 252 Attack EVs to maximize damage giving potential
 • 148 Speed EVs beats the base 60 +speed teir.
 • Seed Bomb for Grass-type STAB.
 • Shadow Sneak for Priority, picks off weakened opposing Pokémon.
 • Rock Slide for hitting common switch ins such as Talonflame, on the switch.
 • Phantom force for your best non-sacrificial damage
 • Explosion for Blissey and safer switch ins
 • Trick Messes up non physical walls that rely on recovery to beat their opponents.
 • Frisk reveals foe's item.

Here is Gourgeist-A with a Choice Band setup to maximize damage output. 148 speed EVs gives Gourgeist-A the jump on base 60s that invest in maximum Speed and a +Speed nature. 108 HP EVs give Gourgeist-A maximum survivability at this speed. 252 Attack EVs are used to top off physical damage.

Frisk is used to reveal the opponent's held item, and possibly their move-set by virtue of that. Seed Bomb is your best move and the one you are most likely to use. Shadow Sneak allows Gourgeist-A to avoid the speed war with many Pokemon who do not run priority of their own, and some that do. Rock Slide was chosen to deal with Flying-, Fire-, and Bug-types that may switch in on you, expecting a Seed Bomb, while Phantom Force can be used if you are not worried about Normal-types switching in on you and blocking you from dealing damage. Explosion is used to sacrifice for massive damage, and can also be used to get another team member in at the cost of Gourgeist-A's life.

[Checks and Counters]

-Countering the Choice Band set relies somewhat on prediction.
-Pyroar is a good check to Gourgeist-A, as it resists Seed Bomb, and is Immune to Ghost type attacks, but must watch out for Rock Slide as that will seriously hurt/
-Hawlucha can come in on any attack bar explosion and OHKO with STAB Acrobatics, though the rare combination of Phantom Force and Shadow Sneak will 2HKO Hawlucha.
-Talonflame can come in on Seed Bomb or either ghost move and OHKO with priority Brave Bird, but is OHKO'd by Rock Slide.
-Mega Tyranitar can come in, Out-speed with only 4 speed EVs and a neutral nature, and force mind games with Crunch/Pursuit, but Tyranitar not holding Tyranitarite cannot switch in directly as it risks being outsped (especially if no speed EVs are used) and 2HKO'd by
-Skarmory takes little from any of its attacks, and can force Gourgeist-A back into its pokeball with the threat of Brave Bird.

I love the different size Gourgeist forms and all, but what's the point of having an analysis for Gourgeist-L? You could take a Gourgeist-H and give it 120 more Speed EVs, and subtract 80 from its HP and 40 from Atk, and you'd get this exact build. The exact same stats.

My first Gourgeist-S has a similar predicament with Gourgeist-A. The way I see it, there's not really any call to make an analysis for the "middle forms" because one of the "extremes" could just adjust their EV spread and accomplish the same thing. It's a confusing issue since we could wind up with duplicate analyses although they are, technically, different pokemon!

While I agree with your argument, this is a WIP, I get the feeling that the alternate spread listed is going to be the best idea for the Large form. I don't see the point of the average size though, where it has too much of a gap in the stat format from the huge form and is too slow to duplicate the small form.

As I test this I will edit.

First of all, your main spread is missing 4 EVs.

Second of all, even with those 4 EVs, Gourgeist-Super can run 164 HP / 212 Atk / 132 Spe Adamant and attain the exact same stat spread. If we're trying to outclass the other gourgs at something, you'd have to hit an important speed tier. Which Gourgeist-L can't. The next speed tier I can think of that's within Large but not Super's reach is 16 spe Zapdos... which normal Gourgeist actually does better since it has higher attack since it can hit that benchmark with Adamant rather than Jolly.

IMO you can salvage this set by making this a Gourgeist-A with 108 HP / 252 Atk / 148 Spe Adamant, since that's technically unique and I don't think he's reserved yet.

I'm gonna give up on this mon, as it is severely outclassed by the other forms, despite being able to hit a speed tier. If anyone else wants it its theirs.
