Questions about 2009 Nintendo Tournament and Others

Hello everyone. I'm not sure if this was the right forum to post here but I've got a few questions that I was hoping you guys could answer.

First let me start by saying I'm a long time lurker(bit over a year now) and ive been reading all the threads and articles that i could over the last week or so about doubles and the upcoming tournament, 2009 Official Nintendo Pokemon Tournament. I've read about all the teams and strategy that go behind them, read most of the RMT and the fixes you guys have suggested and I even went and got PBR so I could start doing some random battles with doubles(near impossable to find any besides PBR that i have noticed). Also its been a blast watching some of the videos on youtube and downloading them to the Plainum VS recorder.

So for the last hour or so I've been coming up with some pokemon I'd like on my team. Picking out move sets, trying to make sure the team has most of its holes covered when i realized that EV points in doubles is much more difficult to do. So I looked up the pokemon on here and saw all the different types of spreads and move sets that smogon has suggested but it seems to me that most if not all of them are for singles battle, is there anywhere on there that has ev spreads or movesets for doubles? Is there even really that much a difference from singles and doubles that I could base my EV spread off the singles spreads that Smogon provides?

Also I noticed the Apprentice Program on here and lurked around that page a bit too. Didn't spot a Doubles Apprentice Program, am I blind or maybe there isn't one(i can understand seeing as how doubles is considered the not fun and not standard way of playing online).

I guess bottom line is is there anyone out there who would be willing to maybe help me through chat, messages, email or just replying to this topic? I have nothing I can offer except maybe a friendly smile or lunch if you attend the SF location for the tournament this coming may.

Also got mIRC and figured i'd lurk around the chat room there for the next couple of days, see what I can pick up from that. Well to anyone who took the time to read this longwinded post, thank you and to anyone who can help me or point me in the right direction a great thank you for you also!

Yours is a valid question. Unfortunately, Smogon as a whole doesn't cater for doubles much, if at all, as you noticed. Whether this is right or wrong is a matter of debate, but it seems like the majority don't like playing doubles. It doesn't help that the current Pokemon simulator doesn't cater for doubles play too.

All I can say is that the doubles metagame is much, much different than the singles one. Different Pokemon, as well as different EVs, are used.

You can try Net Battle as a doubles simulator. It has doubles implemented, but it apparently has many bugs still.

X-Act's applets in his signature should help cover the defensive EVs. If you have Pokemon Battle Revolution, try playing a few doubles battles on Wifi. You'll run into a lot of kids who don't even bother with Species Clause (hello, double Darkrai), but there are some decent players on it.

Good luck!

I think the best sources for information on doubles matches on smogon are the following two threads: Double Battle Metagame thread and Nintendo Tournament thread. The double battle metagame thread should give you an idea of the kind of EV spreads and movesets are commonly run in doubles matches, whereas the second thread should give you more information on the tournament itself and what other people have / will use. If you haven't read them already, I think they are probably worth doing so. Good luck =]

It really is a shame we don't have any sort of doubles analysis or tutor program or...well, anything unfortunately, but hopefully that'll change. Like others have posted, I recommend reading the Double Battle Primer, browsing through the Doubles thread, and playing around on Netbattle (on an unrelated note I think it would be cool if Smogon had a doubles Netbattle server, or if there was a big push to do some sort of doubles tutoring or something on its current NB server, but I doubt there is really enough want for that throughout the community as a whole at the moment...maybe after VGC but I highly doubt it).

Personally, I'd like to see what kind of gripes people have with Doubles besides 'it's not Singles'. My only real turnoff to Doubles at the moment is that the only way you can play it with the same ease as Singles is if you use Netbattle, which has its own share of bugs that can really screw up the match, like people getting free turns.

Thank you guys for the pointers. It really is too bad that there isn't as bit a doubles crowd. Honestly, I was one of those people who figured its easier to get a singles battle so obviously doubles isnt as cool and/or fun. After the announcement of the VGC and I am forced to play doubles. Kinda upset at first but then after a few battles and watching some of the videos, i can honestly say that i enjoy doubles as much, if not more than singles. Anyways, if anyone wants to discuss doubles or maybe test a bit or whatever, feel free to pm me. I'd be more than happy to have someone to bounce ideas around with. Maybe if we get enough people playing doubles smogon might start a doubles tutor program or analysis or anything for that matter. By the way, anyone going to the SF tournament in may?
