In order to make the bracket reach a power of 2 or 3 in terms of size, in round 1 some players are given a free pass (=bye) for the next round. This means you don't have to play for this week and automatically advance to round 2, unless somebody decides to enter as a substitute midweek and gets randomly paired with you
