Rarely Used (RU) Tier

Shouldn't Drought be here as well? I know its not possible to have currently, but it was banned to BL, meaning that if (and when) Vulpix drops to RU, it will not be allowed to use Drought.

In that case, he should add Drizzle+Swift Swim for completion's sake as well.

I mean, effectively, the banlist for UU can only be used in OU. So why go to the pain of making a psuedo-tier with ten pokemon instead of just merging them with the above tier, regardless of usage.

I've actually thought about this as well. Why not just make all BLs OU and just say "these pokemon can't go to UU based on usage anymore"?

Not only does it completely mess with usage statistics, but it creates confusion amongst Smogon's visitors. For example, Gen IV Abomasnow certainly wasn't good enough to be OU and shouldn't be regarded as a prime contender. So by creating BL tier, it was indicated that while it is not exactly the best Pokemon to be dueling in OU, it was too good to be in UU.

We could name it "Verge Line" (VL) for the Pokemon banned from RU. I personally like VL because V is directly below U (UnderUsed)! Just a thought.

Honestly I believe a 5th tier should be made as well. I want to use a Beedrill (there are plenty of others too...just an example) on a competitive team. So far, there has never been a tier or generation where that is viably possible.

Obviously that many tiers might be detrimental to Smogon overall...but I want my Beedrills.

This tier is going to be so much fun imo.
Although the beginning metagames may be a bit crazy, it should settle down nicely and be a really great tier.

Thanks for doing this R_D!

Why not call this tier's banlist UU? Similarly, why not call UU's banlist OU?
Because the distinction between what is banned for being broken in the tier and what is banned due to usage is an important one to make.

Pass Pass Pass the Pass Pass

The Pokemon that can pass Quiver Dance are in RU
The pokemon that can pass Shell Smash are in RU

Oh god this might be pretty scary.

Its a good thing there is Grumpig with his very handy Magic Bounce in RU as well. I like to see people using the Swines.

I wonder if Emboar will rise slightly in usage here in this tier.

Im also kinda scared of Sharpedo here since all his counters seem to be in UU. Yanmega as well.

Grumpig does not have Magic Bounce.

Poliwrath counters Sharpedo and Rotom-Fan makes a decent counter for Yanmega.

Oh gosh!! SmashPassing and QuiverPasses... I'm going to NEED a hazer. I also might run scarf Vital Spirit E-vire just to take Venomoth's Sleep Powder and then hit it with a fire punch.

My predictions of this RU tier as to what people's teams will probably include that they normally wouldn't:

Clear Smog user. Its basically an offensive haze that doesn't affect the user. Amoonguss, Garbodor, Weezing, Victreebel, Haunter, Seadra, Torkoal, Castform, and Gastrodon learn this move.

Magic Coat user. An attack form of the Magic Bounce move. Although Im pretty sure Xatu is in RU. A surprising amount of pokemon learn this move, too many to list. At least over 40, which includes Cresselia.

Phazers. Dragon Tail, Roar, Whirlwind etc., The problem with that is pokemon like Octillery and Cradily with Suction Cups.

Grumpig does not have Magic Bounce.

Poliwrath counters Sharpedo and Rotom-Fan makes a decent counter for Yanmega.

I meant Magic Coat. My bad. They do the same thing anyway.

I dont see how Sharpedo is countered by Poliwrath. I also don't see how a Yanmega would be countered at all by Rotom-S considering he would be able to launch unresisted specs moves against him with the use of Tinted Lens or attack it with Ancient Power if he has Speed Boost.

Don't forget our (for some people second) most favourite mudkipper, the intellectually challenged Quagsire, is also in RU. Smash pass? What smash pass...?

Poliwrath resists Dark and Ice and is immune to Water.

Max SpA LO Hidden Power Grass/Electric vs. 252 HP/252 SpD Poliwrath (Bulk Up/ResTalk set):
317 Atk vs 306 Def & 384 HP (70 Base Power): 136 - 160 (35.42% - 41.67%)

I guess Sharpedo could start running Zen Headbutt but that drastically reduces its coverage.

Sounds like RU might be one of the more balanced tiers lol. I'm just glad there was some action to address the odd 400 pokemon never used. Thanks to R_D and hopefully Electivire gets uesd in this tier.

1)Play this tier. It's soooooo unbalanced right now. Sharpedo, Yanmega, SmashPass, QuiverPass. These are what I call "The Mighty 4".
2)Never wish for Electivire's use. Just let it die. It should've died in Gen4, and I'm still holding a grudge over that.

Eh, I've found SmashPass and QuiverPass to be underwhelming, considering the scariest recipients aren't even in the tier, and phazing them is easier than ever. I agree about the imbalance with Sharpedo and Yanmega. I always have to sack at least one Pokemon to take them down.

Also, be nice to poor Electivire. It's not his fault he's a scrub's best friend :(

Pedo is very difficult to take down but at least i have Honchkrow to kill it with Sucker Punch. Haven't gotten father than confirming it can kill at 80% so all I need to do is play around it with Cress and Regi for two turns and then sack something and its gone. But yeah, Yanmega is utterly boss. i'm running the Tinted Lens+LO version atm with Psychic+HP Ground and its utterly boss.

A fifth tier (or 5th of 6, lol) may be made once RU statistics are obtained. For now, you have to play the tier to make those stats lol.

The pattern has been as followed:

1st gen - Ubers/OU/BL/UU
2nd gen - Ubers/OU/BL/UU
3rd gen - Ubers/OU/BL/UU/NU
4th gen - Ubers/OU/BL/UU/NU
5th gen - Ubers/OU/BL/UU/"UL"/RU/NU

As you can see, the increase in quantity of Pokemon calls for more tiers to be created. The difference between the first two generations and next two generations were not all that great, as NU was not even a tested metagame, and merely a group for Pokemon who could not make it into UU upon usage. This generation changes that with RU and its eventual suspect testing. NU may very well remain an "all the rest," untested metagame.

Its been fun laddering in this so far. I really haven't found anything to be that broken yet. Everything I've come across I've been able to counter pretty well.

TR rulez!
TR is actually a great strategy with stuff like slowking and eviolite porygon in RU, countering QP, SSP and Speed Boost Pokes (Shar and Mega have crappy defense/typing)

The thing is, what phazer isn't going to get mauled in the process?
For example, Cresselia has the greatest Special Bulk of any Pokemon in RU (correct me if I'm mistaken, though).

252 Timid LO Moltres +2 Flamethrower vs. 252 HP/252 Sp Def Calm Cresselia: 52.9% - 62.4%

The bulkiest thing in the tier (if I'm not mistaken) can't even switch in, as it gets 2HKOed. And once it gets in, what will it do to the Pokemon?
I'd like to know what phazer you're running, when it can switch into shit like that.

List of RU Pokemon who resist Moltres' dual STAB: Rotom-H, Lanturn, Rock-types.
Notice how 2 of those are weak to HP Grass...

Speaking of Rotom-H, it not only deals with Moltres, but also Yanmega and to an extent, Venemoth. Rotom-H is win in this metagame.

What about the "Fringe Line" (FL). Hrm. It's tough trying to come up with a word that is equivalent to borderline. I think Fringe is pretty good because it denotes Pokemon that are on the outer fringe of RU (IE played in UU).
