Monotype Rate my Ghost Monotype Team

Hello again! Recently, I've been a huge fan of the Monotype meta due to you essentially being a gym leader - which (imo) is sick. Within learning it, I want to start with the Ghost type: a type with 2 weaknesses, resistances and immunities whilst hitting 2 types for super effective damage and being resisted by 2 types. A typing with a hybrid of neutral coverage and minimal weaknesses as an exploit. And here's my inclusion towards this team archetype.
:runerigus: :leftovers:
Runerigus @ Leftovers
Ability: Wandering Spirit
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic Spikes
- Earthquake
- Memento

If you're using a mono Ghost team, odds are one of them has hazard duties. This leaves you with the following options: Galarian Corsola, Froslass and Runerigus. The latter two are overall better - with Galarian Corsola having bulk and longevity and Froslass being an amazing suicide lead. Runerigus kinda has both going for it. Its 58/145/105 bulk is sometimes ludicrous, and its actually the only Ghost type with Toxic Spikes AND has Stealth Rock - allowing it to be used as a hazard stacker. With Earthquake as its only source of damage and a meager base 95 attack, its not going to deal much damage after its hazard stacking - though so does Galarian Corsola. Memento is a move that allows Runerigus' partners - such as Dragon Dance Dragapult and Swords Dance Mimikyu - free setup opportunity by virtue of a much weaker reciving hit (most of the time anyway). Will-o-Wisp is interchangeable with Memento as a burn on a physical attacker like Rillaboom and Excadrill is immensely valuable in the long term. However it hates Taunt, and is the user is a Flying type with Taunt it just generates free turns for the opposition. But with that being said, being one of only 3 main hazard setters on mono Ghost teams is just incredible, and Runerigus can show this in battle.
:mimikyu: :life orb:
Mimikyu @ Life Orb
Ability: Disguise
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Play Rough
- Shadow Sneak
- Drain Punch

When you think about mono Ghost teams, Mimikyu is up there as one of the best avaliable. Ghost types struggle with Dark types - and Mimikyu in conjunction with its partial Fairy typing allows it to answer such pokemon. With the help of Runerigus and its Memento or some nice pivoting, Mimikyu can almost always guarantee a Swords Dance. It helps that Mimikyu and its solid base 96 speed allows it to outpace the relatively crowded base 90's like Galarian Moltres and the like. Shadow Sneak is consistant priority chip damage that can stop a setup sweeper on low from a sweep - as well as just have the little extra KO range margin. Drain Punch gives Mimikyu a way to damage Steel types for super effective and gives it a healing move for the long game - with its decent 55/80/105 bulk. Life Orb makes it so its less than stellar base 90 attack alongside Swords Dance is worthwhile. If you don't use Mimikyu on your mono Ghost team, you must need a REALLY GOOD reason not to - as it is amongst the best Ghost types avaliable.
:spectrier: :leftovers:
Spectrier @ Leftovers
Ability: Grim Neigh
EVs: 52 HP / 200 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hex

Ah yes. Spectrier. One of many threatening setup sweepers on mono Ghost type teams. Its Substitute Calm Mind set is an excellent balance of bulk and power. Hex is a not so powerful move sure, but when coupled with Toxic Spikes support and Will-o-Wisp burns it cranks its power from 3 to 10. Its also a wincon that helps against defensive cores in Toxapex + Swampert (Mono Water) and Amoonguss + Galarian Weezing (Mono Poison) alongside Mimikyu. And while it can't do much against Normal types, this isn't a glaring issue seeing as many other Ghost types have either coverage for it or have a similar issue. Its an amazing teammate nonetheless, and can help immensly against what a team struggles with.
:gengar: :choice scarf:
Gengar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Focus Blast
- Dazzling Gleam

Gengar is an offensive threat that while frail, has a few things going for it. Firstly, it can remove Toxic Spikes. This is helpful seeing as most mono Ghost teams don't have much hazard removal or status healers - so the fact that Gengar can aid in keeping any hazard off is very valuable. Second, it has Trick. This is a great tool for crippling the likes of Blissey and Toxapex seeing as they rely on there longevity to win the long term. This is also helpful for Eviolites, Heavy Duty Boots users and the such. Lastly, its a partial Poison type. As mentioned earlier, Gengar can remove Toxic Spikes. This is because of its partial Poison typing. It also helps against Fairy types due to it having both a resistance and super effective STAB to hit such targets. And while more niche, Tricking a Black Sludge off Toxapex reduces its longevity even further and gives Gengar a healing move that can cripple a Trick user. As for the moveset, a standard Sludge Wave, Dazzling Gleam, Shadow Ball and Focus Blast gives it a way to damage Dark, Normal, Steel and Fairy types for super effective damage. A Choice Scarf is used as a late game cleaner and revenge killer and is an overall good item to have. Yet another top pick for a mono Ghost team.
:aegislash: :weakness policy:
Aegislash @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- King's Shield
- Iron Head
- Close Combat
- Shadow Sneak

Then there's Aegislash. I'm a personal fan of the 3 attacks King's Shield variant due to its balance of bulk and power. Weakness Policy gives it that extra immense power without it needing to use a Swords Dance whilst Shadow Sneak priority, Iron Head STAB and the coverage of Close Combat is always valuable. As mentioned earlier, its bulk and power is incredible with its blisteringly high base 140 attack and defense stats - which is still pretty high after the nerf going from gen 7 to gen 8. A solid pick on any mono Ghost type team due to its multiple resistances and power.
:marowak-alola: :thick club:
Marowak-Alola @ Thick Club
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 248 HP / 84 Atk / 176 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Poltergeist
- Fire Punch
- Earthquake
- Flame Charge

Now, Alolan Marowak is by far the most replaceable on my team. Its a Ghost type with Ground type coverage - meaning it can "punish" Toxic Spikes absorbers and resists to Stealth Rock as well as the latter Toxic Spikes. Thick Club makes its attack stat eclipsing most legendaries with a blazing 160 attack stat. Flame Charge makes up for its abysmal speed stat - though its still slow even at +1. Earthquake is what allowed it to be on the team for as a Ghost type with Ground type coverage further assisted by a very strong coverage option at that. Fire Punch is a stronger alternative to Flame Charge that doesn't cause Flare Blitz recoil. Poltergeist gives you information on what your facing, and is Alolan Marowak's strongest Ghost STAB option. Lightning Rod helps vs the Electric types due to it granting an immunity to their STAB, and it has decent enough bulk to take at least one hit and deal one back with immense power. It still has the issue of speed, but it can manage in scenarios vs a bulky Staller or a pokemon it outspeeds at +1 speed. While not near the versatility of Runerigus or importance of Mimikyu, it has a niche on a team and in the right hands can be an amazing wallbreaker/sweeper.

But yeah, that's it really. I'd love to hear any feedback on who can do Marowak's job as a Ghost type with Ground type coverage, and any success you may or may not have with it. And with all that being said, goodbye.

Hello, that's a really cool team you have there, I suggest a few changes though, but otherwise this is fieldable:

:runerigus:
Runerigus @ Leftovers
Ability: Wandering Spirit
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Def / 4 SpD / 48 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic Spikes
- Earthquake
- Memento

Minor EV changes. It now outspeeds Toxapex and Melmetal. You can use Mental Herb btw to stop the Taunt users; however there really aren't much Taunt users in Monotype.

:aegislash:
:weakness_policy:->:air_balloon:
Aegislash @ Air Balloon
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 116 HP / 252 Atk / 140 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Iron Head
- Close Combat
- Shadow Sneak

Weakness Policy Aegislash is super cool, however, some people just dont hit it with super effective moves or it gets overwhelmed by chip due to King Shielding and damaging the opponent. Because of this, I suggest using Air Balloon as it is in your best intention that you don't get swept by Choice Band Excadrill's Earthquake. Other than that, having a ground immunity is cool too. Because we can't count on Weakness Policy Boosts, I swapped King Shield with Swords Dance. That EV Spread lets you outspeed Heatran, but if you find that it isn't an issue, you can use a 240 HP / 252 Atk / 16 Spe spread (Still Adamant). That extra Speed lets you outspeed and nail down SpDef Tyranitar and Calm Mind Clefable.

:marowak_alola: -> :dragapult:
Dragapult @ Leftovers / Dragon Fang
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Dragon Darts
- Phantom Force
- Substitute / Sucker Punch

Marowak Alola isnt really good in Ghost and can only be found in specialized teams (Marowak-Alola/Jellicent and/or Dhelmise can be an interesting team to build around on). Because of this, I highly suggest using Dragapult, as it provides you with a strong wincon against teams such as Electric, Dragon, has useful resistances [even though its super frail], and is a super-fast quite difficult to stop Pokemon if it gets going. Leftovers is used in tandem with Substitute, and lets you possibly setup on non-Knock Off Toxapex, Mantine, and other defensive Pokemon and prevents you from being Sucker Punched by Cinderace, while Sucker Punch eases the Electric matchup as it picks off Alolan Raichu, and can put other Sucker Punch users like Cinderace in a weird spot.

Also, your Gengar doesn't have Trick, I've taken the liberty to swap Focus Blast out for Trick as you have 2 mons with Fighting-type coverage already. You can choose to drop Dazzling Gleam though, as Focus Miss on a speed tier as high as Gengar is quite useful sometimes [also its a way to pressure Ferrothorn too]. The modified team is shown below. I hope this helps and I hope to see you around in monotype! :blobnom:

:runerigus: :mimikyu: :gengar: :spectrier: :aegislash: :dragapult:

As for who can emulate Alolan Marowak's wallbreaking prowess: Well, no one. However, you can forge winpaths to win the matchups Alolan Marowak can deal with

For Steel: You have to overload Heatran so that Spectrier can sweep late-game. Mimikyu may be used to 1v1 Bisharp. Burning Celesteela or Corv turns it to setup food for Spectrier.

For Poison: Sub Wisp Hex Spectrier goes brr. Burn their Poison/Dark as soon as possible, as it puts their team on a timer.

For Electric: Setup Dragapult. At +1, it will sweep weakened Electric teams. Sucker Punch lets you deal with Alolan Raichu, which otherwise outspeeds Dragapult.

For Fairy: Overload Klefki. Alternatively, Trick your Scarf to Klefki and use Spectrier to pressure Fairy teams, as they usually dont have a Ghost-type resist.

For Grass: Alolan Marowak is just unswitchable into in Grass. Its threatened out by Knock Off Rillaboom and Zarude. You can probably try to wear down Ferrothorn with Gengar, then setup Spectrier on Cradily or Amoongus. Burning or crippling Zarude is important though. Alternatively, Choice Scarf Gengar outspeeds Zarude and nearly OHKOs it.
