Rate My RU Team

I'm still new to team building, but I tried to make a team centered around my second favorite Pokemon (Charizard), which of course meant making all the Pokemon RU. Please rate and give constructive criticism!

Note: All the movesets were taken from Smogon's Strategy Pokedex. I just want to see how well you think it works together, and any minor tweaks I could make.

Charizard (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Solar Power
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 40 SDef / 212 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Sunny Day
- Fire Blast
- Air Slash
- SolarBeam

Charizard is the star of the team. He's a special sun sweeper, knowing Sunny Day (to set up the sun), as well as Fire Blast, Air Slash, and SolarBeam, making use of his Solar Power ability. Pretty straightforward.

254.gif

Sceptile (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Overgrow
EVs: 60 HP / 252 SAtk / 196 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Rock]
- Focus Blast
- Synthesis

Sceptile is a special attacker, using Giga Beam for STAB as well as Hidden Power Rock and Focus Blast for coverage. He also holds Synthesis for when his HP gets low (helpful if Charizard's Sunny Day is still up).

141.gif

Kabutops (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 HP / 72 Def / 184 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
- Waterfall
- Toxic

Kabutops is here because I needed a Rapid Spinner, what with Charizard being 4x weak to Stealth Rock. He also holds Stealth Rock himself, as well as Waterfall for attacking and Toxic for annoying. Kabutops is also my lead.

208.gif

Grinnin' at You (Steelix) (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 220 Def / 36 SDef
Hardy Nature
- Crunch
- Earthquake
- Gyro Ball
- Roar

Steelix here takes the roll of physical wall, blocking physical attacks quite well and attacking back with Crunch, Earthquake, and Gyro Ball, and phazing when necessary with Roar.

062.gif

Poliwrath (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Circle Throw
- Scald

Poliwrath is mostly here for coverage. He uses a SleepTalk moveset (quite annoying), with Circle Throw and Scald as the attacking moves.

479-c.gif

Rotom-C @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Volt Switch
- Leaf Storm
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Trick

Also really just for coverage, so I could deal with Flying-Types, Rotom-C uses Volt Switch and Leaf Storm for STAB. He also holds Hidden Power Fire, and uses Trick when he wants to put his Choice Scarf on someone who doesn't want it.

Charizard (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Solar Power
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 40 SDef / 212 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Sunny Day
- Fire Blast
- Air Slash
- SolarBeam

I started the team around Charizard. He uses his new Solar Power ability to sweep the team quite effectively, with Leftovers to slightly counteract the Solar Power damage loss. His moveset includes Sunny day as my only method to set up sun, as well as Fire Blast and Air Slash for his STAB moves. The final move went to SolarBeam, taking advantage of the sun to pull off a powerful coverage move in one turn.

563.gif

Cofagrigus (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Mummy
EVs: 252 HP / 152 Def / 104 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Shadow Ball
- Will-O-Wisp
- Haze
- Pain Split

My team has a noticeable weakness to Fighting, so I added Cofagrigus to level things out a bit. She has an immunity to both Fighting- and Normal-Type moves, and serves as a counter against Ghost- and Psychic-Types that might otherwise run rampant. She also serves as a physical wall, especially to those Steelix is weak to. She uses Will-O-Wisp to burn (what else would he use it for?) and cripple opponents, Pain Split when she's in need of HP, Haze in case of stat-lowering moves, and Shadow Ball because Taunt is a thing (and to live up to her roll as Ghost/Psychic check at least a little bit).

141.gif

Kabutops (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Battle Armor
EVs: 252 HP / 72 Def / 184 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Stone Edge
- Waterfall
- Toxic
- Rapid Spin

Charizard also had a large weakness to Stealth Rock, so I needed a Rapid Spinner to take care of them. Kabutops was the chosen solution. She uses Rapid Spin to clear out Stealth Rock (duh). She also knows Waterfall and Stone Edge, because Taunt would otherwise lock her into Rapid Spin, as well as Toxic to complete the set and weaken some walls that might otherwise pose a threat.

208.gif

Grinnin' at You (Steelix) (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 220 Def / 36 SDef
Hardy Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Gyro Ball
- Roar

Looking at the team so far, I needed two things: a wall, and a Ground-Type. Steelix was the obvious choice. Aside from being a beast wall, he packs Earthquake and Gyro Ball for STAB damage, and Stealth Rocks to get entry hazards up, making him my lead unless the opponent's team makes me think otherwise. He also uses Roar to rack up Stealth Rock damage, or if he faces an opponent that poses too much of a threat but doesn't want to switch out.

479-c.gif

Rotom-C @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Volt Switch
- Leaf Storm
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Trick

Looking at my team, I noticed a lack of checks to Flying-Types, aside from Sceptile's Hidden Power Rock. Rotom-C was chosen to cover the weakness, with Leaf Storm as its main STAB move and Volt Switch for the Flying-Types. He also sports Hidden Power Fire, and Trick to hand his Choice Scarf onto a Pokemon that hates it, or to rob NFE Pokemon of their Eviolites (heh, heh).

036.gif

Clefable (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Wish
- Heal Bell
- Seismic Toss
- Toxic

The final Pokemon is a cleric Clefable, using Wish and Heal Bell to do what clerics do - heal my team. She also has Seismic Toss for the same reason Kabutops has Waterfall (because of Taunt), and Toxic to further annoy those nasty opposing walls that Kabutops couldn't/shouldn't have to wok with.

006.gif

I started with Charizard, my second favorite Pokemon, to build a team around him.

006.gif
254.gif

Sceptile was the second Pokemon added, as a counter to Charizard's two greatest weaknesses - Rock and Water (okay, well maybe not the two greatest, but you get the point).

I knew I needed a Rapid Spinner, so Kabutops was chosen. At this point he also used Stealth Rocks himself, but that was later changed to the next Pokemon, Steelix.

I added Steelix for both his Ground typing and his primary roll as physical wall. That's about all.

My main reason for adding Poliwrath was coverage, because my team had a weakness to fire with no checks yet. So Poliwrath it was.

Next I added Rotom-C, for his helpful typing mostly. At this point I was really just trying to cover all my weaknesses, and Rotom-C seemed like a good choice - and still is.

At advice from A dude, I swapped Poliwrath for a Cleric Clefable, and my team has been all the happier (and healthier) for it.

My next change, suggested by Incon, swapped Sceptile for Cofagrigus, to cover up my large weakness to Fighting as well as add another physical wall, as Steelix didn't do so well against Fire- and Fighting-Types.

That's my team for now; again, leave advice/constructive criticism on what you think I could improve on. Thanks for reading!

I did some minor formatting which improved your RMT's overall presentation tremendously. Moving on, please expand on your Pokemon's roles in the team as they don't meet the Forum Guidelines at the moment. Browse through the RMT Archive and other active threads to see the kind of detail we look for. Thanks.

Um.. why? Charizard is NU.

And people occasionally use Volbeat in UU or OU, despite being NU.

http://www.smogon.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4158966&postcount=5

This is a bit outdated, but Charizard is indeed an RU threat.

My UU team also had Kabutops, Charizard, and Sceptile during its early stages. I would suggest maxing out Charizard and Sceptile's speed, so they can outrun certain threats. Aside from that, I want to fix it, but I am still a novice in RU, so I cannot make more constructive criticism. But I do wonder if Cleric Clefable could go in the place of Poliwrath, so you can revitilize your teammates when necessary. I hope you do well on the team. If you do choose to go Clefable > Poliwrath, here is the set:

Clefable @ Leftovers
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Wish
- Heal Bell
- Seismic Toss
- Toxic

Heal Bell clears status from your team, which can give your Pokemon more chances. Charizard loves Wish, as it can restore lost HP from Solar Power. Some of your other Pokemon like it to. Seismic Toss keeps Clefable from being Taunt bait, and Toxic can break down walls.

Also, give Kabutops a new ability, without even a rain dance, swift swim is COMPLETELY pointless.

Battle Armor is probably your best bet. Weak Armor is nice, but unless you resist the hit Kabutops is probably going to be OHKO'd anyway.

Thanks; Poliwrath was the Pokemon I didn't really need as much, though the RestTalk set was fun to use. I'll replace it with Clefable.

Just a suggestion but my team that got me to rank 3 on PS had a defensive core of steelix/lanturn/spiritomb which you could try out in place of clefable and rotom-c.

Lanturn (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Volt Absorb
EVs: 44 HP / 252 Def / 212 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Scald
- Thunder Wave
- Volt Switch
- Heal Bell

Steelix (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Rock Head
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Earthquake
- Gyro Ball
- Stealth Rock
- Roar

Spiritomb (F) @ BlackGlasses
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Sucker Punch
- Pursuit
- Shadow Sneak
- Will-O-Wisp

If you're aiming to max out Charizard's usefulness consider perhaps getting a swift suicide lead such as a sashed Aerodactyl. If your opponent is lacking Gear Grind, Rock Blast, or T-Wave, you could then use a Jolly Aero spread featuring Sunny Day, Stealth Rock (freeing up Kabutops to use Stone Edge or perhaps Rapid Spin, to preserve your precious 'Zard), and your choice of Stone Edge, Taunt, Earthquake, and Fire Fang. From there you could bring in a 4 attack modest/timid Specs/Scarf Charizard to cause some major damage in the sun using any of the following: Overheat, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Focus Blast, Solarbeam, any desirable Hidden Power, Air Slash and Dragon Pulse (from a move tutor right?). Note that Dragon Pulse and a Fire attack give perfect neutral coverage through not only the whole tier, but the entire game (outside of Flash Fire Heatran [That's a thing right?])

Hi Entei999! You have a good start here for a team that could be very threatening. I do have a few suggestions for you that could work out good for the team to make it better.

Your team is quite weak to fighting type attacks with three weaknesses to the type and only one resistance in Charizard, who doesn't want to take that many hits anyway. In addition, Sceptile seems somewhat out of place on your team and his grass typing is redundant with Rotom-C's. You mention that he is your answer to Charizard's 4x rock weakness, however Kabutops can spin Rocks away and Rotom-C can deal with Rock-type Pokemon just as effectively. To remedy this problem, i suggest removing Sceptile to replace him with Defensive Cofagrigus. Cofag is immune to fighting attacks that threaten your team and his great physical bulk allows him to tank most other physical attacks. Access to Will-O-Wisp and Haze can cripple their sweeping potential and remove any boosts that your opponent might have acquired.

I just have a few other minor ideas for your team. First, I think Kabutops should be running a more offensive set. His great attack and speed stats give him sweeping capabilities while also being able to spin hazards away effectively. He should be running a set of Rapid Spin, Stone Edge, Aqua Jet, and Swords Dance with EVs of 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe. Kabutops does not really need to invest in bulk, nor should he be used defensively. Weak Armor is the superior ability as it can tank resisted physical attacks and get a +1 speed boost in the process. Since Stealth Rocks was removed from Kabutop's set, it should be added to Steelix's set instead of Crunch as it offers much more utility.

Summary:

Cofagrigus > Sceptile
Offensive Kabutops > Current spread
Stealth Rocks > Crunch on Steelix

Sets:
Cofagrigus @ Leftovers
Trait: Mummy
EVs: 252 HP / 152 Def / 104 SpD
Bold Nature
-Shadow Ball
-Will-O-Wisp
-Haze
-Pain Split

Kabutops @ Life Orb
Trait: Weak Armor
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Aqua Jet
- Stone Edge
- Rapid Spin

Thanks for the feedback. I'm definitely going Cofagrigus>Sceptile; however, while playing the new team, the loss of defense on Kabutops made it difficult to keep him alive long enough to Rapid Spin. I do like Stealth Rock on Steelix, but I'm going to keep Kabutops more defensively-oriented for now, being my Rapid Spinner.
