Tournaments RBYOMPL II - Commencement Thread

So in general I would agree here, for nc97 in particular I think we should strive to get as close as possible to the original nc97 experience. That's the whole point of the format, if we start changing it, what are we even doing here?
Besides that idt the format is less enjoyable without struggle.
The problem is moreso that with this clause you’re adding a lose condition that functionally doesn’t change anything, so why even add it in the first place. In fact, I’d argue you actually make the metagame less accurate by adding this lose condition because it’s not exactly like struggle did much to begin with. Realistically I just think lose conditions are dumb as a whole and modding them in is weird when it doesn’t even make a large difference.

Today I decided to spend my evening getting needlessly frustrated with Google Sheets instead of prepping for my set or, just like, going to sleep. Anyhow, I bring you the RBYOMPL II Power Rankings! Cheers!

Entering the last week of regular season it's time to look at every team's route to playoffs. This year is rather strange, though. There is a pretty clear gap between the "top 3" and "bottom 3" teams. With 4 teams making playoffs, the "top 3" have pretty much secured their spot, with the "bottom 3" fighting for spot #4. To get a clear view for this, here is every team's score and differential right now:

:mankey: Mickey Mankeys: 6 points, 4 differential
:gengar: Aurafarming Jinwoos: 5 points, 6 differential
:lickitung: The Luckitungs: 5 points, 6 differential
:charmeleon: Charmeleon Chokeslam: 3 points, -2 differential
:shellder: Supersonic Shellders: 3 point, -6 differential
:weedle: W i l d b u n g i s W e e d l e s: 2 points, -8 differential

As you can see there is a two point divide between the #3 and #4 team, which is a big deal. Furthermore, the three matchups this week all happen to be a top 3 team battling a bottom 3 team. This means differential and how the other teams are doing matters a lot this final week. Now let's get to each team's route to get to playoffs.

:mankey: Mickey Mankeys
The Mankeys are the only team that has truly locked playoffs. Since you can only get two points per week, it is impossible for any team in the bottom 3 to catch up.

:gengar: Aurafarming Jinwoos
The Jinwoos are as close to making playoffs as you can be without actually being locked in. It is impossible for the Weedles to pass them in points, meaning they need to be passed by both the Charmeleons and the Shellders. It's easier to describe the exact scenario where the Jinwoos miss playoffs. First of all, the Charmeleons need to beat the Luckitungs, and then the Jinwoos and the Mankeys need to go a combined 1-15 between their two series for the Shellders to overtake them in 14 points of differential. If they go a combined 2-14 they will tie the Shellders in differential and undergo a tiebreaker.

:lickitung: The Luckitungs
The Luckitungs are also extremely likely to make playoffs. They are in the same boat as the Jinwoos in that the Weedles cannot pass them, and they need to go a combined 1-15 with the Mankeys to get passed by the Shellders. They are at a slight disadvantage compared to the Jinwoos, as doing badly enough where the Shellders pass them automatically means the Charmeleons will pass them too. Nevertheless, the chance of either of these combined series ending in a total of 1-15 is extremely unlikely, so the Jinwoos and Luckitungs should both feel secure with their spot in the playoffs.

:charmeleon: Charmeleon Chokeslam
The Charmeleons are the only team in the bottom 3 that are fully in control of their own destiny. That is, they can make it based on their team's performance alone, without worrying about how other teams do. If they go 7-1, they are in, no questions asked. If they go 6-2, they are in as long as the Shellders don't go 8-0, but even then, it's a tiebreaker. If they go 5-3, then they are in as long as the Shellders don't go 7-1. If they tie 4-4, they need the Shellders to either tie or lose AND they need the Weedles not to go 7-1, so a little scarier there. If they lose their week, they need the Shellders to also lose, and the Weedles to either lose or tie.

:shellder: Supersonic Shellders
The Shellders need a little more luck than the Charmeleons due to having a lower differential. If the Charmeleons win their week, the Shellders need to win by 2 more games to secure a tiebreaker, or win by 3 more games to secure a guaranteed spot. The Shellders still have a lifeline if the Charmeleons go 7-1 or 8-0, as this puts the Luckitungs at a low enough differential to pass them. If the Shellders go 8-0, they are guaranteed to pass at least one of the Charmeleons/Luckitungs and make it into playoffs. The only exception is if Luckitungs/Charmeleons go 6-2, in which case there is a three-way tiebreaker. If the Shellders go 7-1, they can snag at least a tiebreaker spot provided the series doesn't end at 6-2 for Luckitungs and Charmeleons. The Shellders have a lot more flexibility if the Charmeleons lose or tie their set. If the Charmeleons lose/tie and Shellders win, they are in. If the Charmeleons lose and the Shellders tie, they are in, provided the Weedles do not go 6-2 or better (5-3 gets tiebreaker).

:weedle: W i l d b u n g i s W e e d l e s
The Weedles have the hardest route to make it to the end. They MUST win their set (except one very specific way they get in through a tie) and even then, their fate is at the hands of the Shellders and Charmeleons. The Weedle's only routes to make it are as follows:
  • They win AND Charmeleons lose AND Shellders lose
  • They win 6-2 AND Charmeleons lose AND Shellders tie (5-3 win results in tiebreaker)
  • They win 8-0 AND Charmeleons tie AND Shellders don't win (7-1 win results in tiebreaker)
  • They tie AND Charmeleons lose 0-8 AND Shellders lose 6-2 (1-7 from charms or 3-5 from shellders result in a tiebreaker)
Even though these are four different ways of making it to the end, they all rely not only on their performance, but also on those of the Charmeleons and Shellders. This makes them the least likely team to make the playoffs, but it is still possible!

With our season coming to a close this week against the Jinwoos, I figured a shoutout post was in order. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank each and every Luckitung for all their work this season. This was my first ever time managing a teamtour, and I couldn’t have asked for a better team to kick off the maiden voyage. We were the team with the highest number of players, and we slotted every single one of us. Chungler and I had it decided from the start of the season— if we were going to win, we were going to do it because all of us contributed, and if we lost, we were all going to shoulder that together. All being said and done, I’m super happy with how we performed, losing out to only the Charms and the Jinwoos, two super capable teams who I’m excited to see duke it out in finals. Thanks everyone for all your work throughout the season, and I hope to run it back next year with as many of you as possible!

THE_CHUNGLER – the underscore chungler

Maris Bonibelle – The unofficial third manager— Maris had more lines in the server than me and Chungler combined, and was a huge boon as support for like half the tiers. SU, LC, and STABmons would have been a lot worse off without you to bounce ideas off of, and that’s on top of carrying her own draft theorycrafting. Going 3-3 in the hardest pool in the tour while keeping the rest of us grounded is no small feat, thanks a ton for all your help <3

Daniolo7 – Make no mistake, Daniolo is HIM. A sleeper pick at the draft stage (I think only me and Soda had our eyes on him), he’s been farming an underground Spanish Rentals league for over a year before this tournament started, and he hit the ground running with a huge experience gap over literally everyone else in the tournament. Even in a quite competitive pool of experienced RBY players like Enigami, Toxin, and Quarante8, Dani started the season 6-0 and enabled the Luckitung run to go as far as it did.

Acetylaldehyde – Another absolute cornerstone of the tungs, Acetyl was one of only 3 players in the entire tour that were 4-0 after 4 weeks, and given how many ties we had, if even a single one of those was a loss, we may not have made playoffs. You did a crazy amount of prepwork in your channel every week, and I knew we were always in good hands for STABmons.

Sotina – Goatina is a high-tier clicker, we picked her up as a jack-of-all-trades player that we could slot in basically any slot and know she’d deliver, and we were lucky enough to be able to put her in her preferred tier and let her flex. Even in speed tie simulator where luck didn’t always go her way, her endgame lines were super optimized and she oddsmaxxed like nobody’s business.

bello figo – Our resident 1v1er, he handled prep for himself and also trained up FighterFrog in 1v1 at the same time. Gave a good performance every week even in the face of some rough luck and irl priorities, and I’m really happy we snagged you for our 1v1 slot. Thanks for all the great work, and all the insight & resources into the different sets/use cases for the viable mons with versatility.

Teh – You were super self-sufficient in NC97 and made the right clicks pretty much every week (we don’t speak about the sleep clause incident). Was nice knowing we had a good clicker every week to oddsmax in evasion simulator, even if the luck didn’t always go your way. Also supplied the hypest and fastest set of NC97 ever seen to secure the tie during semifinals and keep the team alive!

Click>Think – The Clickler… a super nice presence to have in the tungcord and had really good insight in ZU. Broke our 0-5 ZU curse in Semis and it was clear from your postgame discussions you really thought out the follow-up lines before making plays. Came into ZU completely fresh, and the randbats versatility really showed here— you took to the tier like a duck to water and with just a few practice games you were already pointing out solid lines I wasn’t considering. Next OMPL people should have their eye on him, he’s got a great intuition for RBY and is an equally great vibes buff to the team environment.

ThatOneApple – Another well-rounded clicker that could reasonably slot anywhere, I first found out how good apple’s RBY intuition was when we teamed in RBYPL and he learned UU basically immediately, finding optimal lines in seconds that would have taken me 10 times as long to deliberate about. It’s a shame we only got to slot you for 2 weeks, but knowing we had a reliable clicker waiting in the wings the other 4 weeks made planning a lot easier.

fiish – A tragic victim of Chungler and I drafting 2 little cup players, I so wish I could have slotted her every week. Winning the sleepless LC tournament, when we needed you to start you fell right back into the swing of things and played out of your gourd with some crazy predicts and landed all of them.

FighterFrog – Our final undefeated player at 1-0, FighterFrog was a sleeper pick from randbats that was also our cheapest— a steal at 4k. As a week 1 bench main, he went out of his way to learn tiers he wasn’t familiar with so he could play practice games with starters or sub in last minute if needed. Farmed me 7-0 in 1v1 practice during tryouts, and showed he could pick up tiers quickly and reliably. And when we needed you to start, you won your 1v1 set 4-2, correctly predicting what your opponent would choose basically every single game. Managers, keep your eye on him next OMPL (or don’t so I can pick him up again for 4k next go-around :gareggmie: )

aerobee – Aerobee started the tour with no RBY experience, only joining because dumbass unserious gastlies told them to, and luckily unlike their recruiter Aero proved to be a smartass serious player. We threw them into the deep end of the proverbial ZU pool and they were happy to learn, seeking out a bunch of practice games and picking up the tier super quickly. We only got to slot you for a single week, but I would have been happy to slot you into ZU again— at the rate you were improving you would have been ZUing with the best of ‘em if you had any more weeks to hone your craft.

DD Joe – The Dragon Dance Joseph, if we dropped Aerobee into the deep end of the pool we dropped you into the ocean, playing your first ever ZU game during your actual set. An established RBY clicker, we sent you out with nothing but a few bulletpoints about the tier. Naturally there was going to be a learning curve on a first set, and for nothing but a single paragraph tutorial on the tier, you played solid.

Support (Wanted in 49 States, Virae, Volk, Link, Torkonpeter, Hammer) – Behind every great team is a great support, and I’m happy to have had you all along for the ride. Wanted in 49 States and Virae were a big help during the drafting process, both in theorycrafting and weighing in on next picks more than the actual managers did, and having established & reliable builders to help with draft was invaluable in a tier where half the battle is in the builder. virae was invaluable with help in basically every tier in some capacity throughout the season— helping out with practice games for Rentals, Draft, NC97, and ZU; with insight and team evaluations in the other 4 tiers throughout the run. Volk, Link, Tork, and Hammer were all playoff acquisitions after other teams had been eliminated, and while Link407 had been helping Daniolo with Rentals throughout the season, Volk/Tork/Hammer were poached directly from other teams, and each had a lot of expertise in a bunch of different tiers. hammer798 helped Sotina prep for little cup, torkonpeter provided some last-minute help with SU, and Volk in particular could support basically every single tier, and was a big help in STABmons, Rentals, SU, and even ZU. All 3 of them were just an overall nice presence to have in the general and game discussion chats too. Everyone having someone to bounce ideas off of in their respective tier made for a really friendly teamcord environment, and a productive one for improving as players, so thank you.

Thanks for everything y’all, was a super fun time managing, and I’m glad to have been able to joke around and play RBY with you all the past two months!

Congratulations to the folks on Charmeleon Chokeslam for their victory in RBYOMPL II! Huge thanks to all the managers and players for keeping this fun little tournament alive and growing. And especially a big thanks to Murphy Lawden and Yash Vortex for being excellent hosts throughout the whole tournament. I'm quite happy with how the tournament turned out this year. I think we saw a lot of really good metagame development this time, possibly even more than we did in RBYOMPL I. I hope to see you all and more for RBYOMPL III!

Also, I have prepared this quick feedback survey so I can keep RBYOMPL improving every year. I'm especially interested in your feedback if you played or supported for RBY Draft, but all feedback is strongly encouraged and greatly appreciated!
