[OVERVIEW]
*With an extremely high Defense stat and access to the coveted IronPress combination, Registeel serves the role of the format's late-game sweeper. Steel is an incredibly good typing defensively, and Clear Body stops Intimidate from the likes of Incineroar, which could otherwise prevent the OHKO on Flutter Mane with Heavy Slam.
*Registeel fits best on balance teams that feature its favorite partners. Incineroar and Amoonguss can slow down the pace of the game, Latias provides crucial speed control in Tailwind, and Rillaboom's Grassy Surge and Fake Out is appreciated by Registeel. Additionally, Latias and Rillaboom threaten Urshifu-R. Similarly, Raging Bolt is also a good Registeel partner, being the premier Urshifu-R counter in the format.
*Notable good matchups for Registeel include Rillaboom and Ogerpon-W, both of which get cleanly 2HKOed by Body Press after a single Iron Defense boost. Kingambit also does poorly against Registeel, as Swords Dance can be mitigated by Iron Defense and Body Press hits Kingambit very hard if it does not Terastallize.
*However, not all physical attackers are helpless against the IronPress Registeel. Both Urshifu formes can pose a threat, depending on Registeel's choice of Tera type. Chien-Pao can threaten heavy damage with Sacred Sword if Registeel has not used Terastallization. Gholdengo is also a hard counter to Registeel, as it is immune to Body Press and resists Heavy Slam while also being able to set up with Nasty Plot and break through Registeel's high bulk.
[SET]
Registeel @ Leftovers
Level: 50
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 52 Atk / 76 Def / 124 SpD / 4 Spe
Tera Type: Water / Fairy
Impish Nature
- Body Press
- Heavy Slam
- Iron Defense
- Protect
[SET COMMENTS]
*Heavy Slam allows Registeel to hit opposing Ghost-types like Flutter Mane. 52 Attack EVs allow Heavy Slam to OHKO bulky Flutter Mane.
*Leftovers keeps it healthy throughout the game, with Protect providing additional turns of recovery.
*Tera Water is the standard Tera Type for Registeel, allowing it to resist Urshifu-R's Surging Strikes and being a generally good defensive typing. However, with the rise of Urshifu-S, Tera Fairy is a viable option to resist Wicked Blow and Fighting-type moves while also being neutral into the majority of the metagame. Be careful using this, however as Teratallized Urshifu-R threatens a 2HKO with Surging Strikes, and Landorus can easily pin you with Earth Power and Sludge Bomb.
*The Special Defense investment allows Registeel to almost always survive Timid Earth Power from Landorus. The rest of the Defense EVs along with an Impish nature maximize its damage output.
