[SET]
Zapdos @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Name: Specially Defensive (Electric)
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 240 SpD / 16 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Calm Nature
- Discharge
- Heat Wave / Hurricane
- Substitute
- Roost
[SET COMMENTS]
Years pass, but Zapdos remains a staple on Electric teams thanks to its good special bulk, Ground type immunity, access to Heat Wave, and two great abilities. Pressure is preferred for this set, given its better synergy with Substitute, as it allows Zapdos to effectively PP stall Draco Meteors from the likes of Latios and Raging Bolt. Discharge is preferred over Zapdos's other Electric-type STAB moves, since it lets it spread paralysis among foes like Dragonite, Latios, and Dragapult with much more ease, preventing them from becoming long-term threats. Heat Wave makes Zapdos a potent Steel- and Grass-types breaker, leaving only Heatran unscathed, while Hurricane can put more pressure onto Fighting and Grass teams. Substitute often gives Zapdos two chances to paralyze its foe and to let it better use Pressure. With Zapdos's good general bulk, a Substitute can most of the time take more than one hit from weak attacks such as Knock Off and Dragon Tail from Hisuian Goodra and Poison Jab from Clodsire, making its target effectively lose four PP per Substitute. The given spread maximizes Zapdos's special bulk while ensuring it outspeeds Adamant Bisharp, Cloyster, and defensive variants of Gholdengo.
With its specially defensive profile, Zapdos is best paired with Pokemon that can take on physical moves as well as Ice moves, such as Rotom-W. Rotom-W's good typing lets it come in on Mamoswine, Gliscor, and Iron Hands and cripple them with Will-O-Wisp or outright KO them with Hydro Pump. With Will-O-Wisp support, Zapdos can more easily handle physical foes and can even put a Substitute in front of some of them. Assault Vest Iron Hands and Magnezone offer some more specific walling capabilities, with the former improving the Dragon matchup and the latter helping in the Fairy matchup by putting a stop to Choice Specs Flutter Mane and Calm Mind Hatterene. In return, they both benefit tremendously from Zapdos's Ground immunity and its ability to PP stall problematic moves like Draco Meteor and Luster Purge in Iron Hands's case. Sandy Shocks provides invaluable support through entry hazard stacking; it can also address sun variants of Fire teams with Protosynthesis's Speed boost and Earth Power and Power Gem, preventing Volcarona from wreaking havoc. Regieleki provides much-needed support through dual screens, ensuring Zapdos can answer even Choice Specs Flutter Mane, and can paralyze targets to ensure Zapdos always has the initiative in its interactions. Pawmot can deal offensively with pesky Ground-type foes like Landorus, Garchomp, and Mamoswine with Ice Punch and Close Combat, and it can give Zapdos a second breath with Revival Blessing. Lastly, Raging Bolt is a formidable late-game sweeper that benefits a lot from Zapdos's ability to weaken foes both through PP stalling and direct damage. Raging Bolt is also a more direct answer to rain Water teams by threatening them with Thunderclap.
