Introduction:
With a lot of old pokemon returning with DLC2, I figured it could be fun to go back to some old generation sample teams and try to recreate them in SV. This sand team by ABR in generation 5 samples looked interesting not only because it's actually legal since it doesn't have ferrothorn, it also has Mamoswine which I haven't tried out in SV yet and it's quite fun to use. This team is not super consistent in my experience, and it took a lot of laddering to eventually reach 2047, so that could just be the result of a fluke streak of good matchups or good rng, but this team was still pretty successful in the 1900s nonetheless.

Proof of Peak: (On the alt azumarilttt even though theres no azumarill on this team lol) (also the first three are all storm zone lool)

Roles + Paste:
:sv/Tyranitar:
Tyranitar @ Expert Belt
Ability: Sand Stream
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 200 Atk / 136 SpA / 172 Spe
Lonely Nature
- Knock Off
- Low Kick
- Fire Blast
- Ice Beam

Yea so this :tyranitar: set is really weird and probably also not optimized, since it doesn't even 100% ohko spdef :gliscor: after rocks, so it should probably have more spatk and less atk investment. A better spread is probably 156 atk evs, 180 spatk evs, so I have now changed the paste to this ev spread, which actually ohkos spdef :gliscor: and 252 hp :skarmory: after stealth rocks. This tyranitar is basically designed to lure checks to :excadrill: and :mamoswine: such as :skarmory:, :gliscor:, :great_tusk:, and :ting_lu:. It also speed creeps adamant :kingambit:. It is -def nature because I thought preserving spdef bulk was more important against pokemon such as :iron_moth: and :dragapult: and :kyurem:. In addition, if the opponent is too lazy to calc, it's possible to bluff :choice_band: and do something like low kick into :ting_lu: and then knock off as they switch to :gholdengo:. Finally, this of course sets sand for :excadrill:. Note, you could swap fire blast for heavy slam to improve the :clefable: matchup, but fire blast is quite valuable for the steel birds.
136 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 244 HP / 252+ SpD Gliscor: 298-355 (84.6 - 100.8%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
136 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Corviknight: 238-281 (59.6 - 70.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
136 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Skarmory: 281-331 (84.1 - 99.1%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
compared to 180 SpA
180 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Skarmory: 293-346 (87.7 - 103.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
180 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 244 HP / 252+ SpD Gliscor: 312-370 (88.6 - 105.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
156+ Atk Expert Belt Tyranitar Low Kick (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Ting-Lu: 271-322 (52.7 - 62.6%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
156+ Atk Expert Belt Tyranitar Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Gholdengo: 418-492 (110.5 - 130.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
156+ Atk Expert Belt Tyranitar Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Gholdengo: 298-353 (78.8 - 93.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Kyurem Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 147-174 (43.1 - 51%) -- 3.1% chance to 2HKO

:sv/Gliscor:
Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 244 HP / 12 Def / 252 SpD
Impish Nature
IVs: 26 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Protect
- Earthquake
- U-turn

This set is actually exactly copied from the ABR sample team, and it serves as a spdef pivot for the team as well as setting stealth rocks, which I thought was more important than spikes since this team relies on them to pick up some :tyranitar: knock outs, and :gliscor: is meant to be pivoting most of the time to bring in the breakers. Steel tera is a viable alternative to help patch up this teams choice band :dragapult: matchup. The speed IVs are stolen from the Gen 5 team, but it allows this to slow pivot against opposing :gliscor: while still being faster than jolly :kingambit:.
252 Atk Protosynthesis Roaring Moon Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 244 HP / 12+ Def Gliscor: 160-190 (45.4 - 53.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Poison Heal
252 Atk Protosynthesis Roaring Moon Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 244 HP / 12+ Def Gliscor: 122-144 (34.6 - 40.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Poison Heal
+1 252 Atk Protosynthesis Tera Flying Roaring Moon Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 244 HP / 12+ Def Gliscor: 274-324 (77.8 - 92%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Poison Heal
+1 252 SpA Archaludon Draco Meteor vs. 244 HP / 252 SpD Gliscor: 294-346 (83.5 - 98.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Poison Heal

:sv/Excadrill:
Excadrill @ Air Balloon
Ability: Sand Rush
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Rapid Spin

Pretty typical :excadrill: set, using tera ghost to take advantage of a skarmory that has been knocked off by repeatedly swords dancing and pp stalling with rapid spin. Skarmory could be knocked off by :mamoswine:, or if :tyranitar: misses the next fire blast. Also, tera ghost allows this to occasionally beat :zamazenta: which is a massive threat to this team. It also serves as a last resort against :maushold: if :amoonguss: has fainted or has bee knocked off. Air balloon allows this to completely wall :gliscor: using earthquake as its only attacking move. This makes it extremely valuable against opposing hazard stack balance matchups, but also means the team is very weak to hazard stack :gliscor: with knock off. Jolly allows this to outspeed :roaring_moon: after a dragon dance, as well as booster :iron_boulder:, making it very valuable against hyper offense. It also leads well into :glimmora:, able to earthquake or iron head followed by a rapid spin.

252 Atk Excadrill Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Iron Boulder: 404-476 (125.8 - 148.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Excadrill Iron Head vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Iron Valiant: 294-348 (101.7 - 120.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Excadrill Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Maushold: 226-267 (78.2 - 92.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

:sv/Keldeo:
Keldeo @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Surf
- Secret Sword
- Vacuum Wave
- Flip Turn

Specs :keldeo: has been one of my favorite breakers in DLC2. :Toxapex: is far less common this generation than in the last two, which otherwise completely walls :keldeo:. Although :slowking_galar: is a good check, since they don't often run slack off, :keldeo: can simply surf twice as they chilly reception, making them no longer a check the next time :keldeo: gets in. Secret sword also 2hkos tera water :slowking_galar:. Vacuum wave also provides extremely valuable priority against :kingambit:, and can switch in once to check it as well.

252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Surf vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Slowking-Galar: 148-175 (37.5 - 44.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Tera Water Keldeo Surf vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Slowking-Galar: 198-234 (50.2 - 59.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Tera Water Keldeo Secret Sword vs. 252 HP / 16 Def Tera Water Slowking-Galar: 244-288 (61.9 - 73%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Tera Water Keldeo Vacuum Wave vs. 236 HP / 0 SpD Kingambit: 448-532 (112 - 133%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Tera Water Keldeo Vacuum Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Roaring Moon: 194-230 (55.2 - 65.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Tera Water Keldeo Vacuum Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Meowscarada: 260-308 (88.7 - 105.1%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Vacuum Wave vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Darkrai: 216-254 (76.8 - 90.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

:sv/Mamoswine:
Mamoswine @ Choice Band
Ability: Thick Fat
Tera Type: Ice
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard
- Earthquake
- Knock Off

This pokemon has been very underexplored in my opinion. Ice shard priority is super valuable into :roaring_moon: as well as any other chipped opponents, especially with tera ice. With thick fat, this is also able to check heat crash :gouging_fire:, since that is only 60 bp against :mamoswine:. The moveset is pretty self explanatory, but knock off helps out :excadrill:. Icicle crash is able to often flinch down :skarmory: especially after stealth rocks, since it is close to a 2hko. :landorus_therian: is not very common, so oblivious is not necessary. Defensively, the ground typing allows :mamoswine: to revenge kill :raging_bolt:, or at least chip it, since most defensive teras are still neutral to ice. For example, a tera fairy :raging_bolt: will get

252+ Atk Choice Band Mamoswine Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Raging Bolt: 582-686 (128.1 - 151.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Raging Bolt: 494-584 (108.8 - 128.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Roaring Moon: 288-338 (82 - 96.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Iron Valiant: 118-139 (40.8 - 48%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Iron Boulder: 129-153 (40.1 - 47.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Meowscarada: 288-342 (98.2 - 116.7%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dragapult: 272-324 (85.8 - 102.2%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Deoxys-Speed: 132-156 (54.7 - 64.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 160+ Def Skarmory: 138-163 (41.3 - 48.8%) -- 75.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Weavile Triple Axel (40 BP) (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Thick Fat Mamoswine: 111-135 (30.7 - 37.3%) -- approx. 65.9% chance to 3HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Kyurem Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Thick Fat Mamoswine: 166-196 (45.9 - 54.2%) -- 53.1% chance to 2HKO

:sv/Amoonguss:
Amoonguss @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Spore
- Foul Play
- Giga Drain/Grass Knot
- Sludge Bomb

:amoonguss: is this team's main physical wall. Tera fire allows it to emergency check :gouging_fire: or spore :volcarona:, or survive a triple axel from :weavile: or :meowscarada:. This serves as the primary answer to :great_tusk: as well as other physical attackers such as :zamazenta:, :dragonite:, and :ogerpon_wellspring:. It also checks :maushold: with :rocky_helmet:.

252 Atk Great Tusk Headlong Rush vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Amoonguss: 178-210 (41.2 - 48.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252+ Atk Protosynthesis Gouging Fire Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tera Fire Amoonguss: 173-204 (40 - 47.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Here is the team paste: Revamped Gen 5 Sand

General Gameplans:
  • Against :glimmora: hyper offense, lead :excadrill: and iron head to potentially flinch the :glimmora:, and even if you don't, you can just rapid spin the next turn. If there is a ghost type, rapid spinning isn't 100% necessary as :amoonguss: can absorb the toxic spikes. Utilize the strong priority from :keldeo: and :mamoswine:, as well as :excadrill: in sand to revenge kill.
  • Against :samurott-hisui: hyper offense, lead :keldeo:, and play the rest of the game the same as above.
  • Against :gliscor: balance. Utilize :Mamoswine: and :keldeo: to try to break through. If that doesn't work, try using :tyranitar: which often does well with its variety of coverage moves. You will likely have to break through before :meowscarada: or :weavile: beats this team. If the :gliscor: has no knock off, :excadrill: can try to keep off hazards.
  • Against rain: Try to break with :keldeo:, and disrupt the rain with :tyranitar:.
  • Against sun: Again disrupt sun with :tyranitar:. Also, :mamoswine: and :excadrill: are very strong since sun doesn't often carry good ground resists/immunities. :Gliscor: or :amoonguss: can break up sun's momentum with a well timed tera.
Threat list:
Unfortunately, Gen 5 was not really prepared for some modern day threats, which is weird since they should have just planned better to be honest.
  • Choice band :dragapult: has no defensive answer, unless you choose to make :gliscor: tera steel or fairy. You can revenge with :mamoswine: or live a hit and ko back with :tyranitar:. A well played :dragapult: should probably beat this team pretty easily.
  • Life orb :deoxys-speed: also has no defensive answer. It has coverage to ohko every single member of the team. The only ways to beat it are either chip it with :mamoswine: and make it faint to :life_orb:, revenge it with :excadrill: under sand, though this is difficult without sacking a pokemon, unless you perfectly pivot around it, or defensively terastilizing :gliscor: or :tyranitar:. No wonder :deoxys-s: is banned in gen 5.
  • Iron defense :zamazenta: with substitute should simply 6-0 this team, since :amoonguss: will not be able to break the substitute. Grass knot is an option, which would also improve the iron defense or curse :garganacl: matchup. However, this will still just lose to tera steel :zamazenta:. The only way to beat this is basically to just position so that it can never set up, or position so that its setup opportunity is in front of excadrill. Then, you can rapid spin clearing hazards and boosting your speed as they most likely iron defense first. Then, you can tera ghost and swords dance as they hopefully body press. At that point, you can get two +2 earthquakes off, and hopefully that is enough to beat it. Fortunately, iron defense :zamazenta: does not seem super common, since it doesn't do as well into balance structures which often have a :dondozo: or will-o-wisp :dragapult:
  • Triple axel :meowscarada: or :weavile:. Both of these balance threats are very dangerous. Weavile can be checked once or twice by :keldeo:, but you need to break through before they ko your entire team. One thing is that if the opponent lets :weavile: get chipped, such as by a banded icicle crash from :mamoswine:, you may be able to knock it out with :rocky_helmet: :amoonguss: later on. :amoonguss: can also defensively tera in order to spore or sludge bomb. :Gliscor: can also defensively tera in a pinch, and :keldeo: and :mamoswine: can help revenge, along with :excadrill:.
  • :darkrai: is a huge threat, since it also has strong coverage against everything on the team. :keldeo: can check it and revenge with vacuum wave, but then hypnosis is a big threat. :Excadrill: is probably the most reliable revenge killer. You can defensively terastlize :gliscor: or :tyranitar: in a pinch.
  • Sticky Barb :clefable: is very annoying, and amoonguss will usually have to be sacked to that. Otherwise, you just have to break through like normal against balance, but with amoonguss far less able to serve as a defensive tool.
  • :walking_wake: is a massive threat, since nothing can switch into the combination of draco meteor and hydro steam. This will likely be a sack war against sun.
  • Choice specs :kyurem: is a huge threat. There is no draco meteor switchin, though mamoswine can switch into specs freeze dry. If specs, it can be limited with hazards. If boots, you just need to break through before they do, and tyranitar checks it a little better.
  • Curse :garganacl: will just 6-0 the team, you can run grass knot :amoonguss: but there have been some tera ghost :garganacl: recently so it still just 6-0s pretty much. If you position like a god the whole game you can win i guess.

Obviously ABR built this team originally in gen 5, and here's that sample team https://pokepast.es/4160e0ea5b56a9da.
Shoutouts all the tyranitar believers in traineraid discord, we will rise up and bring ttar back to ou.

glad to see keld usage this gen, shits amazing. I've also experimented with mamo (AV) and this mon is legit, like a slightly worse kyurem with more utility + checks raging bolt. Btw, I faced u on ladder and u beat me with mono specs LMAO

Gorgeous team, love seeing successful sand builds. If I may, tera grass is a cool tech on Tyranitar to resist water and grass while still escaping the ground weakness. This could be especially useful against the Walking Wake matchup that you listed as problematic. Again, awesome team!

True that's definitely an option if the walking wake already is a little chipped, bc otherwise I would be concerned about letting it click flamethrower next turn since I don't ohko, and I add another fire weak for the gouging fire in the back. Definitely a viable alternative tera though.

Do you think this team functions as well as it does because of these specific Mons or do you think there are Pokemon from newer gens that might be considered upgrades/replacements for any of these team slots? Just curious. Solid team!

I don't think there are any newer gen mons that are direct upgrades to any of the pokemon on this team, but I think the team functions because the structure is fundamentally decent and breakers mamoswine and keldeo continue to be strong and can be enabled by uturn gliscor, but unfortunately the defensive core is no longer adequate because there are a ton of newer mons that give this team trouble.

Now that sleep moves have been banned, should i replace spore with toxic on amoonguss, or replace it with a different pokemon, such as Rotom-Wash?

Ok so i just tested with both and even without spore, amoonguss has more synergy and longevity in this team than Rotom-W . What do you think tho?

Not sure if you've been asked this or not, but with the recent sleep banned does this team still function well with Amoongus or have you already had in mind to change the team to fit with the current rule set?

I haven't given much thought to it, but since amoonguss still has a valuable defensive profile for this team, something like stun spore is probably usable, toxic also seems fine, I'll probably do some testing at some point.
