Rhyhorn (Analysis) [QC 1/2]

So much for this coming on Monday / Tuesday.

Status:

QC Approved: 1/2 (ShinyAzelf, Some smart, handsome/beautiful, wise person will finish this off)

[OVERVIEW}

Rhyhorn is a hugely underused threat in the LC tier. It’s base 85 attack is capable of wreaking sever havoc. Its base 85 defense is certainly no joke, completely capable of taking hits. However, a concern is it’s base 30 Special Defense, which is bad no matter which angle you look at it. However, all in all, Rhyhorn can be a fantastic asset to your team if used properly.

[SET]
name: Rock Polish
move 1: Rock Polish
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Megahorn / Ice Fang
item: Evolution Stone / Life Orb
nature: Jolly / Adamant
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 SpD / 236 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
-With a Rock Polish and Jolly nature, Rhyhorn can reach 26 speed, which outspeed are the Choice Scarf users in the tier
-Earthquake and Stone Edge provide nearly completely neutral coverage in the tier, not to mention that they both provide STAB for Rhyhorn
-Megahorn can be used to take down Baltoy and Bronzor, which resist both Earthquake and Stone Edge
-Ice Fang is particularly effective in taking down Gligar, who otherwise walls this set.

[ADDITONAL COMMENTS]
-Jolly nature is utilized in this set because it brings Rhyhorn’s speed to 26 after a Rock Polish, solidly outspeeding all Choice Scarf user in the tier
-Evolution Stone is used to increase Rhyhorn’s bulk
-36 SpD EVs are there instead of 36 HP EVs so Evolution Stone can bring Special Defense up to 15 instead of 13
-Superpower can be utilized to defeat Scraggy.
-Rock Slide may be utilized on this set, using it at your discretion, it's basically an accuracy vs. power thing.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Stone Edge
move 3: Aqua Tail
move 4: Megahorn / Fire Fang
item: Choice Band
nature: Adamant
EVs: 156 HP / 236 Atk / 36 SpD / 76 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
-Earthquake and Stone Edge are Rhyhorn’s primary STAB moves, and also provide nearly perfect coverage in the tier
-Aqua Tail can OHKO all forms of Gligar after Stealth Rock damage
-Megahorn deals Bronzor and Baltoy who otherwise wall this set
-Fire Fang provides a stronger hit to deal with Bronzor, and Aqua Tail can take down Baltoy instead

[Additonal Comments]
-This set can also be used in Trick Room conditions if you change the nature to relaxed and use 0 Speed IVs and EVs
-The EVs are doctored to maximize attack, high amounts of bulk, and an extra point in Speed
-There really is no need to add extra Speed to Rhyhorn since it won’t outspeed anything anyways, therefore Adamant nature is used instead of Jolly.
-Superpower can be utilized to defeat Scraggy

[SET]
name: Trick Room Sweeper
move 1: Aqua Tail / Swords Dance
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Megahorn / Ice Fang
item: Life Orb / Evolution Stone
nature: Brave
EVs: 196 HP / 236 Atk / 36 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
-Aqua Tail is used for decent coverage in the tier.
-Swords Dance brings Rhyhorn’s amazing attack up to 38, but is usually not viable because Rhyhorn is on a timer.
-Earthquake and Stone Edge provide near neutral coverage in the tier, along with that, they are also STAB moves for Rhyhorn
-Megahorn can be used to counter Baltoy and Bronzor who otherwise wall this set
-Ice Fang can also be utilized as a special counter for Gligar.

[ADDITONAL COMMENTS]
-The EVs and IVs are doctored to minimize speed and maximize attack. The rest are just put into HP and Special Defense to increase Rhyhorn’s bulk.
-Life Orb is used for maximum sweeping potential, as you are racing against time.
-Evolution Stone is used to increase its bulk.
-36 SpD EVs are used to make Rhyhorn’s Special Defense 15 instead of 13.
-Superpower can be utilized to defeat Scraggy

[SET]
name: Substitute
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Megahorn / Superpower
item: Oran Berry / Evolution Stone
nature: Adamant
EVs 196 HP / 236 Atk / 36 SpD / 36 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
-Against the high amounts of Water-types in the tier, a Substitute is essentially giving Rhyhorn an extra life
-Earthquake and Stone Edge provide almost perfect neutral coverage in the tier
-Megahorn is used to counter Baltoy and Bronzong, who would otherwise wall this set
-Superpower is used to counter Scraggy, who could break Rhyhorn's substitute, take a hit, and OHKO it with it's Fighting attacks.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
-Oran Berry is utilized to allow for more subs, and Evolution Stone allows for more defense and possibly hoping for the sub to last 2 turns.
-Adamant nature is used to maximize ttack
-The EVs are tailored to maximize attack and bulk. The last point is invested into speed because 36 EVs are not enough to up Rhyhorn's defense stat.

[Team Options]
-Because Rhyhorn’s speed is a let down, Pokemon that can paralyze opponents such as Exeggcute, Magnemite, and Venonata are excellent partners.
-Sandstorm boosts Rhyhon’s Special Defense to viable levels. Therefore, Hippopotas is a fantastic choice for use as Rhyhorn’s teammate.
-Chinchou is also a good teammate for Rhyhorn as it keeps those nasty water types at bay.
-Ferroseed is a good teammate because it can also check Water-types, has lots of resistances, and can set up Stealth Rock and Spikes
-Duskull can check Fighting and Ground types who are liable to revenge-kill Rhyhorn.

[Optional Changes]
-Due to Rhyhorn’s abysmal speed, a Trick Room set can be used for Rhyhorn’s Choice Band set.
-Rhyhorn has an awesome physical movepool, with moves such as: Crunch, Payback, Superpower, Reversal, Thunder Fang, Dragon Rush, and Double-Edge (not legal with elemental Fangs or Dragon Rush)
-Rhyhorn can phaze opponents using Roar
-Rhyhorn can also use Counter to take down opposing physical attackers, but generally has enough attack to make that superior to Counter.
-Rock Slide may be utilized instead of Stone Edge, a classic power vs. accuracy thing
-Rock Blast may be used to take down Substitutes, and to break Focus Sashes and Sturdy users.

[Counters]
-Gligar and Bronzor are the best counters if they don’t switch in on unresisted move.
-Scraggy can take a hit from Rhyhorn and can OHKO Rhyhorn with Hi-Jump-Kick
-Water, Grass, and Fighting revenge Killers such as Pururiru, Machop, and Scraggy are optimum counters for this set.
-Diglett can also trap and kill Rhyhorn, but if Rhyhorn uses Rock Polish as it switches in, it has no hope unless it has an unbroken Focus Sash.

[Dream World]
-Rhyhorn's Dream World ability is Reckless, meaning that it does 1.2x more damage with Recoil moves
-With that, you could replace Ice Fang with Double-Edge and use Aqua Tail on the same set for neutral coverage in the tier, however, this is generally not recommended since the recoil of Double-edge will also increase and Rhyhorn already attains enough power with it's two STAB moves.

Yo bro,

As silly as it may sound, Superpower can be mentioned in AC, as Scraggy is really common, and will love to switch in on Rhyhorn.

Anyways, a Sub set could work. With all these powerful Water-types in this generation, a Substitute can really help Rhyhorn. Substitute, Earthquake, Stone Edge, Superpower / Megahorn, with Adamant and an EV spread of 196 HP / 236 Atk / 36 SpD / 36 Spe , with Oran Berry probably. Superpower is again for Scraggy.

EDIT: Trick Room sweeper needs Life Orb IMO.

Okay, will do, I'll get that done in half an hour.

EDIT: All changes made, however, I made Superpower the second slash in the Substitute set since with Superpower, Bronzor and Baltoy will wall this set. You can at least get a hit on Scraggy as he breaks your Substitute before you switch in another Pokemon to kill it IMO

I think this is ready for a stamp TY ShinyAzelf, make this my first 5th gen approval (Actually, this will be my first approval whatsoever)

Stop blackmailing me to stamp your analysis.

QC Approval: 1/2

I didn't blackmail you for shit... You just told me to remove the last line of my sig. (Which, by the way, you added yourself when I went to the bathroom)

Whatever, YATAH!!! One more to go! THANKS AZELF, HOPE YOU GET BETTER ATTACK AND DECENT DEFENSES IN 6TH GEN AND A KICKASS MOVEPOOL

-Ice Fang is particularly effective in taking down Gliscor, who otherwise walls this set.

gligar

move 4: Megahorn / Ice Fang /

take out that slash

Mention Rock Slide, accuracy vs power, etc etc

Mention Rock Blast for killing subs and sashes and sturdy

-Water, Grass, and Fighting revenge Killers such as Pururiru, Machop, and Scraggy are optimum counters for this set.

You forgot the grass revenger.

Also, mention Megahorn kills Grass-types as well as Baltoy and Bronzor. Pretty useful.

-Fire Fang provides a stronger hit to deal with Bronzor, and Aqua Tail can take down Baltoy instead

The power difference between neutral megahorn and SE fire fang is minimal.

What Fire Fang is for is killing Tesshiido, who takes Megahorn and kills you with STAB Grass-moves.

btw, mention Tessy in counters.
