Ubers Ribombee

Felixx

I'm back.

[OVERVIEW]

* Ribombee's high Speed stat coupled with a Fairy typing makes it a viable choice on very specific teams as a Sticky Web setter, as it's much less passive than its main competition in Smeargle. It can offensively force out Pokemon that are otherwise dangerous to Sticky Web teams, such as Zygarde-C, Yveltal, and Mega Salamence, especially since the latter two avoid Sticky Web's Speed drop and can effectively use Defog to remove it for teammates.
* Additionally, unlike Smeargle, Magic Bounce users such as Mega Sableye and Mega Diancie are unable to beat Ribombee one-on-one, as a decent Special Attack stat with maximum investment allows it to 2HKO both targets, meaning they fail to anti-lead Ribombee successfully and thus cannot prevent the Sticky Web.
* However, there are many other Pokemon, such as Mega Gengar and Cloyster, that are able to shutdown Ribombee's Sticky Web attempts through the use of Taunt or Rapid Spin, while offensive threats such as Primal Groudon and Necrozma-DM can use it as setup fodder very easily, even being able to increase their Speed through boosting moves to limit the effects of Stun Spore.
* Ribombee's inability to prevent entry hazards from the opposing team means it allows its teammates to be continually chipped and get their possible Focus Sash broken. This is one of the reasons why Smeargle is opted for much more often, as it can at least prevent opposing hazards with Taunt or even run Rapid Spin.

Moves
========

* Once set on the opposing side of the field, Sticky Web will lower the Speed of opposing grounded Pokemon like Mega Gengar, Ultra Necrozma, and support Arceus formes. This lets teammates like Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre outspeed them and helps prevent them from getting revenge killed themselves.
* Moonblast is a strong Fairy-type STAB attack that prevents Ribombee from being passive, letting it threaten Defoggers hit super effectively by it such as Yveltal and Giratina-O, as well as preventing free setup from the likes of Mega Salamence and Zygarde-C.
* Stun Spore lets Ribombee cripple Steel- and Fire-types as well as faster Pokemon such as Necrozma-DM, Ho-Oh, and Choice Scarf Xerneas. Stun Spore works exceptionally well if the opponent leads with a support Arceus forme or Choice Scarf user, as it allows teammates to more easily pressure them with strong attacks and attempt to prevent their Defog attempts after Ribombee is knocked out.
* Quiver Dance, when used in tandem with Stun Spore, gives Ribombee a way of pressuring support Arceus formes, as they commonly run Defog. It also lets Ribombee outrun Choice Scarf Xerneas and Yveltal after a boost, 2HKOing the former and having a high chance to OHKO the latter.

Set Details
========

* Maximum Special Attack investment allows Ribombee to have a high chance to 2HKO Mega Diancie from full, forcing it out and letting it set up Sticky Web, while maximum Speed investment allows it to outpace support Arceus formes and Naganadel.
* Shield Dust prevents the secondary effects of moves such as Rock Tomb, Sacred Fire, and Fake Out and,(AC) in tandem with Focus Sash, helps Ribombee guarantee that Sticky Web goes up at least once.

Usage Tips
========

* Although it is technically a dedicated entry hazard lead, it's not always advisable to lead off with Ribombee, as opposing leads such as Mega Gengar, Deoxys-S, Excadrill, and Cloyster can annoy it through the use of Taunt or Rapid Spin. Thus, avoid leading with Ribombee if these threats are on the opposing team.
* If the aforementioned threats are not present, it's a good idea to lead with Ribombee more often than not, as getting up Sticky Web early on in the match lets you heavily pressure your opponent. After setting up Sticky Web, try to identify the opponent's possible forms of hazard removal and then bring out the respective wallbreaker with a good matchup versus them, such as bringing in Primal Kyogre to prevent Arceus-Ground from Defogging successfully.
* Stun Spore should be utilized if Ribombee cannot offensively force out the threat in front it, as this allows the target to be taken advantage of by teammates more easily. Additionally, attempt to use Stun Spore first on targets that have the potential to outspeed Ribombee, such as a possible Choice Scarf Xerneas, Yveltal, Ho-Oh, or Necrozma-DM that could attempt to undergo Ultra Burst. This allows you to get the most utility out of Ribombee, as simply going for Sticky Web against them means they will outspeed and KO Ribombee the next turn, although Stun Spore's finicky accuracy can be a problem in these situations.
* Predict forced switches against the likes of Zygarde-C and Mega Salamence to attempt to utilize Quiver Dance, as it can be a neat tool for pressuring support Arceus formes, especially in conjunction with Stun Spore's paralysis chance, weakening them for teammates in the back. Quiver Dance can also be used on the turn you predict your opponent to sacrifice a Pokemon, as this allows you to outspeed opposing Choice Scarf users and possibly force damage on a slower target.

Team Options
========

* Mixed Primal Groundon with Eruption enjoys Sticky Web support, as it can then outspeed and heavily weaken a large amount of Defoggers such as Arceus-Ground, Ho-Oh, and Giratina-O that will attempt to remove your entry hazards. This lets Ribombee set up its Sticky Web again later in the match, when the Defoggers have been either KOed or weakened after being smacked around by Primal Groudon. Mixed Primal Groudon may also forgo Swords Dance and instead run Stealth Rock to further cripple the opposing team.
* Life Orb Yveltal's generally limited defensive counterplay and ability to use Taunt on Defog users makes it ideal on Sticky Web teams, forcing Sticky Web to stay up and preventing opposing hazards from the opponent.
* Calm Mind + Water Spout Primal Kyogre is in the same boat as Eruption Primal Groudon, taking advantage of the Speed-lowering effect of Sticky Web to drop powerful attacks on Defoggers. Life Orb Palkia with Focus Punch also accomplishes a similar role, 2HKOing support Arceus formes with the right STAB move and threatening out Ho-Oh and Giratina-O. Both Pokemon also adequately ease up the matchup versus stall and semi-stall teams.
* Ultra Necrozma is a staple on Sticky Web builds, as although it is already very fast, Sticky Web lets it outpace even more offensive threats such as Mega Gengar, Mega Mewtwo Y, Deoxys-A, and Choice Scarf Xerneas, preventing it from being revenge killed. It also enjoys Ribombee's ability to offensively force out Yveltal. Special Ultra Necrozma can also fit Stealth Rock on its moveset, as it can punish hazard removal attempts from Mega Salamence, Giratina-O, and Ho-Oh with super effective coverage.
* Other common Pokemon that benefit from Sticky Web include Rayquaza, Extreme Killer Arceus, and Swords Dance Arceus-Ground, all of which can break down the opposing team and pressure support Arceus formes with high powered attacks, especially with Ribombee's additional Stun Spore support. Rayquaza and Extreme Killer Arceus both utilize Extreme Speed to help in an offense versus offense matchup. Arceus-Ground can occasionally fit Extreme Speed in its moveset, but more importantly, it also provides another option for a Stealth Rock user.
* Mega Diancie, although possibly redundant in combination with Ribombee, can set up Stealth Rock to further pressure the opponent while bouncing back opposing hazards with Magic Bounce. It also handles Ho-Oh, Yveltal, and Mega Salamence decently well, forcing them out with the threat of Diamond Storm and preventing their possible Defog attempts. Its access to Explosion also helps versus Defog and Rapid Spin users it can't beat, as Explosion blocks the use of both moves successfully.
* Mega Gengar, Marshadow, and Lunala provide spinblocking support for Ribombee, ensuring its hazards stay up versus Excadrill, Cloyster, and Rapid Spin Smeargle leads. Mega Gengar especially enjoys Ribombee using Stun Spore on Pokemon such as Primal Groudon, Necrozma-DM, Ho-Oh, and Arceus-Ground, boosting the power of Hex and letting it trap and KO or heavily weaken these targets. Ultra Necrozma can also use Necrozma-DW as its base form before Ultra Burst, providing another option for a spinblocker on the team.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Toxic is a decent option over Quiver Dance, as it lets Ribombee put Ho-Oh on a timer while still beating support Arceus formes, although offensive variants of Ho-Oh will still get crippled by Stun Spore.
* Aromatherapy is another viable option, as it lets Ribombee cure its teammates of status ailments, although without Quiver Dance its matchup versus support Arceus formes is much worse.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Rapid Spin Users**: Cloyster can OHKO Ribombee through its Focus Sash and utilize Rapid Spin, and it can set up Spikes or Toxic Spikes to cripple Ribombee's team. Excadrill resists Moonblast, sets Stealth Rock, and repeatedly uses Rapid Spin to remove Sticky Web as it goes up, eventually KOing Ribombee. However, Cloyster and Excadrill are annoyed by Stun Spore, and a full paralysis on the wrong turn can let Sticky Web stay up.

**Mega Gengar**: Mega Gengar takes little damage from Moonblast and OHKOes Ribombee even at +1 Special Defense, easily being able to trap and dispose of it. The possibility of Taunt also lets it shut down Sticky Web or Stun Spore attempts, successfully anti-leading Ribombee.

**Steel-types**: Common Steel-types such as Necrozma-DM, Magearna, Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, and Klefki have little to fear from Ribombee and will proceed to KO it will their respective STAB attacks or use it as setup or entry hazard fodder. However, offensive variants of Necrozma-DM and Mega Scizor dislike taking Stun Spore.

**Fire-types**: Ho-Oh is a nuisance for Ribombee, as it's able to sponge boosted attacks and Defog away the Sticky Web. Primal Groudon is able to liberally switch into Ribombee and either trade hazards or throw off a strong attack. However, offensive variants of either Fire-type dislike taking a Stun Spore, as it hinders their wallbreaking capabilities.

I am aware that this thread is in a WIP stage, but there are a few things that the QC team has internally discussed earlier today:

Replace fourth move (Toxic) with Quiver Dance. It is used to pressure Arceus formes better. Toxic won't be necessary as Stun Spore will do good enough job to harass many Pokemon that will lead versus Ribombee.

Team Options may need more attention (if you haven't been attentive about it already) as even if Ribombee itself is a niche Pokemon, it still secures its place in Sticky Web teams which is one of the prominent playstyle in the metagame at this moment. This means you would probably want to consider more viable Stealth Rock users other than less effective ones like Excadrill and add more detailed information about offensive partners that can benefit from Sticky Web support.

Hope these will assist you.

I'm not sure if comparing Ribombee to Smeargle has been done properly in Overview. The Overview currently goes through "Smeargle is more common setter" -> "Ribombee differentiates itself as a lead with an actual offensive presence" -> "Smeragle can do this better". The mentions of Stun Spore also quite spread throughout in Overview so what you are trying to say sounds quite less cohesive. I'd first go over what differentiates Ribombee from Smeargle as a lead. When doing so, specify Yveltal and Mega Salamence as threats to Sticky Web teams (those team archetypes have insufficient defensive counterplay against them in general and they also have a potency to carry Defog, more likely in case of the latter). Also I think it will be more precise to say that Mega Sableye and Mega Diancie will fail to 'anti-lead' Ribombee instead of 'switching into' it.

I will then move onto Stun Spore. Support Arceus formes are not the only relevant targets so include examples like Choice Scarf users that attempt to limit Ribombee's staying on the field to one turn.

Poor bulk, lack of resistances, a Stealth Rock weakness, and vulnerability to all other entry hazards means Ribombee will often only live a hit due to its Focus Sash, limiting its ability to switch in and set up Sticky Web throughout a match.
This is hardly relevant when Ribombee is a Sticky Web setter that will lead in more games than it will not. Inability to consistently set Sticky Web is a commonly shared problem from all viable Sticky Web users in the tier.

There has to be a mention of Mega Gengar and Cloyster anti-leading Ribombee easily and Necrozma-DM possibly setting up on it.

Deoxys-S, Excadrill, and Cloyster
Add Mega Gengar here too.

* Preserve Riombee's Focus Sash as much as possible, as its frailty means it's easily KOed by neutral attacks and thus requires careful play to make sure it's able to set up Sticky Web, as the teams it's used on often completely revolve around utilizing this entry hazard. Keeping the Focus Sash intact is also important in handling boosted Mega Salamence and Choice Scarf Yveltal, as their Flying-type STAB moves easily OHKO Ribombee.
I think this is really self-explanatory...? Also it doesn't take people an extra sense of care to reserve Focus Sash when they are going to lead with Ribombee most of the time. You even skipped Focus Sash mention on Set Details because you presumably thought the details are not necessary...

If its Focus Sash is intact, attempt to use Stun Spore first on targets that have the potential to outspeed Ribombee and limit it to a single turn, such as against a possible Choice Xerneas, Yveltal, or Ho-Oh, or against Necrozma-DM that could attempt to ultra burst to outspeed you. This allows you to get the most utility out of Ribombee, as simply going for Sticky Web against them means they will outspeed and KO Ribombee the next turn, although Stun Spore's finicky accuracy can be a problem in these situations.
Remove Focus Sash emphasis here too and I'd just say it is generally good to paralyze a foe before going down. Just say if any Pokemon has a potency to outspeed Ribombee or viably hold a Choice Scarf, Stun Spore should be clicked at Turn 1.

* When possible, keep even a 1 HP Ribombee alive to set up Sticky Web later again in the match. If its already been taken down to its Focus Sash, Sticky Web is not on your opponents's side of the field, and their are no entry hazards on your side, agressively switch Ribombee into Stealth Rockers and some Spikers such as Primal Groudon, Necrozma-DM, Arceus-Fairy, and Ferrothorn, as it can outspeed them and get a last ditch effort Sticky Web on the field before being picked off.
Won't you just want to sacrifice your lead at 1 HP? It will be really rare where you'd have to withdraw 1 HP Ribombee from the field because giving free turns especially when you are playing with webs is going to be dangerous.

I'd add more explanations on when should Quiver Dance be used and how can it be handy.

* Choice Specs Xerneas can be valuable asset on Sticky Web teams, as it pressures out the likes of Yveltal, Mega Salamence, and Giratina-O that will attempt to remove the Sticky Web. Ribombee can also cripple Necrozma-DM with Stun Spore, limiting its wallbreaking potential and preventing it from outspeeding Xerneas even if it uses Rock Polish or ultra bursts.
Not really a huge fan of this because this just baits in Mega Gengar even harder and you are mostly better off with Geomancy sets imo. Or actually Xerneas itself becomes more questionable 'mon to employ because Ribombee already threatens out what Xerneas would.
* Other common Sticky Web abusers include Mega Salamence, Extreme Killer Arceus, and Swords Dance Arceus-Ground, all of which can break down the opposing team and pressure support Arceus-formes and Giratina-O with high powered attacks. Arceus-Ground also provides another option for a Stealth Rocker.
Not sure about Mega Salamence. Also Ribombee has a potency to mess with support Arceus formes and Giratina-O by itself...

* Mega Gengar, Marshadow, and Lunala provide spin blocking support for Ribombee,
Necrozma-DW is also possible; mention it here or the bullet where you talk about Ultra Necrozma.

Defoggers such as Primal Groudon, Necrozma-DM, Ho-Oh, and Arceus-Ground, boosting the power of Hex and letting it trap and KO or heavily weaken these targets.
Fix this.

Make a separate point about Stealth Rock user.
Explain what offensive Pokemon appreciate Ribombee's ability to threaten out Pokemon like Yveltal, Mega Salamence, and Magic Bounce users with Moonblast.
Add points about Pokemon that can assist in preventing Defog from foes that Ribombee cannot hold down - Ho-Oh, some Arceus formes, etc.

I will need to think more about Checks and Counters but I'd definitely add a specific section about Rapid Spin users and Mega Gengar higher than anything. They simply anti-lead Ribombee and in Rapid Spin users' case, they set entry hazards themselves which is another annoyance. Remove points about entry hazards because as it has been mentioned a few times, Ribombee will lead often. What I expect to see is something like:

* Rapid Spin Users
* Mega Gengar
* Steel-types
* Fire-types

or something similar depending on your discretion or the rest of the QC team.

I'll come back to this again once you implement these.

* Other common Sticky Web abusers include Rayquaza, Extreme Killer Arceus, and Swords Dance Arceus-Ground, all of which can break down the opposing team and pressure support Arceus-formes with high powered attacks, especially with Ribombee's additional Stun Spore support. Arceus-Ground also provides another option for a Stealth Rocker.
Extreme Speed from these Pokemon can be handy as extra securities against offensive teams.

* Mega Diancie, although it may be redundant in combination with Ribombee, can set up Stealth Rocks to further pressure the opponent while bouncing back opposing hazards with Magic Bounce, and it also handles Ho-Oh exceptionally well, forcing it out with the threat of Diamond Storm and preventing its possible Defog attempts. Its access to Explosion also helps versus Defog and Rapin users it can't beat, as Explosion blocks the use of both moves successfully.
Yveltal and Mega Salamence are also threatened by Mega Diancie.

Cloyster can OHKO Ribombee through its Focus Sash and also utilize Rapid Spin, and it can setup Spikes or Toxic Spikes to cripple Ribombee's team, although it can't set its hazards as reliably as Excadrill.
Cloyster pressures Defog users far better than Excadrill does. At +2, Cloyster OHKOs Mega Gengar and Giratina-O, as well as Giratina-A and Necrozma-DW with favorable rolls or if running a less viable yet relevant Adamant nature. If possible, I would address Cloyster first on "Rapid Spin users".

Ho-Oh is by far the biggest nuisance for Ribombee
Other Pokemon are far more problematic than Fire-types (including Ho-Oh) which is at the bottom of c&c.

Though Ribombee is a less viable Pokemon, the playstyle it fits on is prominent enough for the analysis to have deeper levels of details. For this reason, I'd advise you to be able to see a bigger picture about the Pokemon before making the next reservation. While analysis intends to educate readers about the Pokemon in question, it is also mandatory for it to contain essential information about the metagame and the teams it secures its place in.

Moves
========

* Once set on the opposing side of the field, Sticky Web will lower the Speed of opposing grounded Pokemon like Mega Gengar, Ultra Necrozma, and support Arceus-(RH)[space]formes,(RC).(AP) This lettinglets teammates like Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre outspeed them and helpinghelps prevent them from getting revenge killed themselves.

Set Details
========

* Maximum Special Attack investment allows Ribombee to have a high chance to 2HKO Mega Diancie from full, forcing it out and letting it set up Sticky Web, while Maximum Speed investment allows it to outpace support Arceus-(RH)[space]formes and Naganadel.
* Shield Dust prevents the secondary effects of moves such as Rock Tomb, Sacred Fire, and Fake Out, and in tandem with Focus Sash, helps Ribombee guarantee that Sticky Webs go up at least once.

* Calm Mind + Water Spout Primal Kyogre is in the same boat as Eruption Primal Groudon;(RSC),(AC) taking advantage of the Speed-(AH)lowering effect of Sticky Web to drop powerful attacks on Defoggers. Life Orb Palkia with Focus Punch also accomplishes a similar role, 2HKOing support Arceus-formes with the right STAB move and threatening out Ho-Oh and Giratina-O. Ultra Necrozma can also use Necrozma-DW as its base form pre-ultra burst, before Ultra Burst, providing another option for a spin blocker on the team.(AP) if opted for.

Other Options
=============

* Toxic is a decent option over Quiver Dance, as it lets Ribombee put Ho-Oh on a timer while still beating support Arceus-(RH)[space]formes, although offensive variants of Ho-Oh will still get crippled by Stun Spore.
* Aromatherapy is another viable option, as it lets Ribombee cure its teammates of status ailments, although without Quiver Dance its matchup versus support Arceus-(RH)[space]formes is much worse.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Rapid Spin Users**: Cloyster can OHKO Ribombee through its Focus Sash and utilize Rapid Spin, and it can setup Spikes or Toxic Spikes to cripple Ribombee's team.

The possibility of Taunt also lets it shut[space]down Sticky Web or Stun Spore attempts, successfully anti-leading Ribombee.

**Steel-types**: Common Steel-types such as Necrozma-DM, Magearna, Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, and Klefki have little to fear from Ribombee, and will proceed to KO it will their respective STAB attacks or use it as setup or hazard fodder.

However, offensive variants of either Fire-type dislike taking a Stun Spore as it hinders their wallbreaking capabilities.

* Quiver Dance, when used in tandem with Stun Spore, gives Ribombee a way of pressuring support Arceus formes, as these Pokemon they commonly run Defog. It also lets it Ribombee outrun Choice Scarf Xerneas and Yveltal after a boost, 2HKOing the former and having a high chance to OHKO the latter.

Set Details
========

* Maximum Special Attack investment allows Ribombee to have a high chance to 2HKO Mega Diancie from full, forcing it out and letting it set up Sticky Web, while maximum Speed investment allows it to outpace support Arceus formes and Naganadel.
* Shield Dust prevents the secondary effects of moves such as Rock Tomb, Sacred Fire, and Fake Out,(RC) and,(AC) in tandem with Focus Sash, helps Ribombee guarantee that Sticky Webs go Web goes up at least once.

Usage Tips
========

After setting up Sticky Web, try to identify the opponent's possible forms of hazard removal,(RC) and then bring out the respective wallbreaker with a good matchup versus them, such as bringing in Primal Kyogre to prevent Arceus-Ground from Defogging successfully.
* Stun Spore should be utilized if Ribombee cannot offensively force out the threat in front it, as this allows the target to be taken advantage of by teammates more easily. Additionally, attempt to use Stun Spore first on targets that have the potential to outspeed Ribombee, such as against a possible Choice Scarf Xerneas, Yveltal, Ho-Oh, or Necrozma-DM that could attempt to undergo Ultra Burst.
Quiver Dance can also be used on the opponent's predicted sack turn you predict your opponent to sacrifice a Pokemon ("sack" isn't an allowed term as far as I'm aware), as this allows you to outspeed opposing Choice Scarf users and possibly force damage on a slower target.

Team Options
========

* Mixed Primal Groundon with Eruption enjoys Sticky Web support, as it can then outspeed and heavily weaken a large amount of Defoggers such as Arceus-Ground, Ho-Oh, and Giratina-O that will attempt to remove your entry hazards. This lets Ribombee set up its Sticky Web again later in the match, when the Defoggers have been either been KOed or weakened after being smacked around by Primal Groudon. Mixed Primal Groudon may also forego forgo Swords Dance and instead run Stealth Rock to further cripple the opposing team.
* Life Orb Yveltal's generally limited defensive counterplay and ability to use Taunt on Defog users makes it ideal on Sticky Web teams, forcing Sticky Web to stay up and preventing opposing hazards from the opponent.
* Calm Mind + Water Spout Primal Kyogre is in the same boat as and Eruption Primal Groudon,(RC) taking take advantage of the Speed-lowering effect of Sticky Web to drop powerful attacks on Defoggers. Life Orb Palkia with Focus Punch also accomplishes a similar role, 2HKOing support Arceus-(RH)formes (I saw this in the last check. Just be mindful that "support Arceus formes" is written as such, without the hyphen. The hyphen only applies to a specific Arceus type.) with the right STAB move and threatening out Ho-Oh and Giratina-O.
* Other common Pokemon that benefit from Sticky Web include Rayquaza, Extreme Killer Arceus, and Swords Dance Arceus-Ground, all of which can break down the opposing team and pressure support Arceus-(RH)formes with high powered attacks, especially with Ribombee's additional Stun Spore support. Rayquaza and Extreme Killer Arceus both utilize Extreme Speed to help in an offense versus offense matchup. Arceus-Ground can occasionally fit Extreme Speed in its moveset, but more importantly,(AC) it also provides another option for a Stealth Rock user.
* Mega Gengar, Marshadow, and Lunala provide spin blocking spinblocking support for Ribombee, ensuring its hazards stay up versus Excadrill, Cloyster, and Rapid Spin Smeargle leads. Mega Gengar especially enjoys Ribombee using Stun Spore on Pokemon such as Primal Groudon, Necrozma-DM, Ho-Oh, and Arceus-Ground, boosting the power of Hex and letting it trap and KO or heavily weaken these targets. Ultra Necrozma can also use Necrozma-DW as its base form before Ultra Burst, providing another option for a spin blocker spinblocker on the team.

Other Options
=============

===================

**Rapid Spin Users**: Cloyster can OHKO Ribombee through its Focus Sash and utilize Rapid Spin, and it can setup set up Spikes or Toxic Spikes to cripple Ribombee's team.

**Steel-types**: Common Steel-types such as Necrozma-DM, Magearna, Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, and Klefki have little to fear from Ribombee,(RC) and will proceed to KO it will their respective STAB attacks or use it as setup or entry hazard fodder.

However, offensive variants of either Fire-type dislike taking a Stun Spore,(AC) as it hinders their wallbreaking capabilities.
