Introduction
We all know him. He is THE Poke'mon master. Commonly mistaken for Ash, Red is the main hero in Generation I and the Generation III remakes, and the strongest opponent in Generation II. He is the symbol of Poke'mon Trainers, as seen in Super Smash Bros. All reveling aside, with the coming of HG & SS, I wanted to create a team that utilizes the Poke'mon used in the final battle in today's adept metagame. So, without further ado, let us honor the man that symbolizes all of us. The silent protagonist known as Red!
At a glance:
Charizard: The Anti-Lead
Item: Choice Scarf
Nature: Modest
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Sp.Atk / 180 Spe / 76 Def
Moveset:
Charizard has taken a fall of grace with each passing generation. With the introduction of Stealth Rock, Charizard is almost completely unusable. However, Charizard makes for a great Anti-lead, due to SR not being up, along with it's diverse move-pool that can take on plenty of the metagame's popular leads. Not to mention Charizard is the coolest poke'mon in the game.
It's use:
As said before, Charizard's purpose is to start the match and hit fast, along with hit hard. Choice Scarf makes sure to outspeed all non-scarfed leads, and, depending on said lead, choose an attack to counter it on the turn it would usually use to set up SR, Taunt, etc. The beauty of ScarfedZard is that few people actually see it coming, and, as I've witnessed on Shoddy, do strange things when going against it. I don't know how many lead Gyarados' I've battled, who try setting up a DD where I use HP Electric, Still to outspeed it and 2HKO it. That said, A Gyarados CAN OHKO with Waterfall, unless I get lucky and get the OHKO with HP.
Charizard utilities don't end at the beginning. ScarfedZard also makes an excellent Revenge Killer, even with SR on the field.
Now, the EVs... I'm having a little trouble with. The spread allows me to still outrun a +1 Gyarados, and outspeed a scarfed Flygon and Salamence, but I'm not exactly sure what a better spread would be. No HP EVs are given in order for it to survive two Stealth Rock Switch-Ins.
Leads:
Azelf: Hit it twice. Most it can do is set up SR.
Froslass: Same case. I just have to worry about Hypnosis.
Weavile: NOTHING can save it from overheat.
Abomasnow: LOLZ.
Hippowdon: Unfortunately, He's one that I'd have to switch out on. Venusaur!
Bronzong: OHKO with Overheat
Roserade: DOOMED.
Metagross: Overheat. Are you getting the picture here?
Salamence: Will outspeed even Choice Scarf Variants, but is this short of OHKOing it. Not sure if it would one shot me.
Ninjask: Overheat. It's bound to die sooner or later.
Breloom: If Overheat missed against this bugger, I'd be so pissed off.
Swampert: D: SWITCH!
Tyranitar: *Prays Focus Blasts Hits.*
Smeargle: Hit it, and more than likely take the Spore.
Crobat: Unless it's holding a focus Sash, it's down.
Aerodactyl: switch. No way does Charizard want to take a rock slide.
Gyarados: Despite it being capable of OHKOing a Charizard with Waterfall, most people decide it's set-up fodder, making a HUGE mistake. ^0^
Gengar: Can usually hit it hard... Gotta watch out for the focus-sash / Hypnosis Trickster though.
Machamp: Overheat takes care of Balboa.
Venusaur: The Leech Support
Item: Black Sludge
Nature: Bold
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Moveset:
....Why is this UU again? As far as I'm concerned, Venusaur is INCREDIBLE. The ability to take a hit, absorb Toxic Spikes, two great STAB moves, a sleep inducing move, leech seed.... No wonder it's the first evolution on the Poke'dex! I've even had this baby go toe-to-toe with Blissey numerous times, and I've won with leech seed and sludge bomb poisoning. I repeat, It's INCREDIBLE!
It's use:
Simply put, leech seed to restore damage, all while terrorizing it's opponents with STABs. Problem with a sweeper from the opposition? Sleep Powder, and there we go. Simple, but INCREDIBLE!
Blastoise: The Rapid-Spinning Trooper
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Bold
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Moveset:
Squirtle was the first Poke'mon I had received when I was seven, and Blastoise was the first final evolution I had gotten. This poke'mon was in my original team, and it will always be one of the greatest designs from GameFreak in my opinion.
Heartfelt stories aside, Blastoise does hold merit, particularly in this team. The ability to Rapid Spin Stealth Rock and Spikes is VERY important in my team, considering most are susceptible to spikes, and Charizard will never appreciate SR.
It's use:
Switch in on any sweeper, even a special, roar it away, and then Rapid Spin away any entry hazards that could give my team problems. The fact that it can take on Salamences gives it recognition too.
Pikachu: The mixed Sweeper
Item: Light Ball
Nature: Hasty
Ability: Static
EVs: 152 Atk / 104 Sp.Atk / 252 Spe
Moveset:
Because there is no greater feeling in the world than OHKOing Tyranitar with a Pikachu. Hell, even SWAMPERTS don't want to get in the way of Pika's Grass knot! Red's strongest poke'mon, Pikachu makes for a great late game sweeper, when the opponent has been weakened, and faster threats have been handled. As powerful as it may be, however, and as widespread as it's moveset is, no matter WHAT, don't let Pikachu get hit.
Road Kill never looked so pitiful. :(
It's uses:
Stay hidden until the late game, where it shall both destroy and embarrass any survivors on the opposition. It may not be the strongest tyke in Kanto, but Pikachu sweeps are more fun than Shuckle sweeps.
Espeon: The Dual Screen Supporter
Item: Light Clay
Nature: Timid
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 40 Def / 216 Spe
Moveset:
Espeon - the only one of Red's team that did not derive from Kanto, but rather from Johto. But this team will not be segregating help from this Eevee-lution, as Espeon is the best support this team can get. Whether it be curing off that SR damage from Charizard, to making sure Pikachu can survive the switch, Espeon is a welcome friend to this group that makes the cruelties of battle a little more bearable.
It's Uses:
Espy usually comes in once Venusaur puts an opponent to sleep and leech seed it. Whether they keep it in, or switch, Espy has the speed to set up one Screen, and possibly the bulk to set up another. Around it's half life, Espeon is to take one for the team and use Wish, giving a free switch in to Pikachu, Charizard, or Snorlax to avenge it's death.
Snorlax: The Special-Tank
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Careful
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 168 HP / 120 Def / 220 Sp.Def
Moveset:
Another of my original team mates, and the Poke'mon that holds the closest place to my heart. The rest of the metagame can have their Scizors, Salamences, Metagrosses, and whatever Dragon or Steel, but I love this fatty.
Anyhow, Snorlax adds definite physical strength to my team, and with +2 Curses on it, all that will stop it is a roaring fiend.
It's use:
Snorlax usually comes in after Espeon's Reflect is set up, making sure to keep it's defense at check while it takes that time to set-up. Once we have the curses on, rest off any damage, then begin Landing on top of the opponents team with it's blob of man-meat. It won't need Reflect anymore with curse set up, and even if brick-breakers such as Salamence or Scizor comes in, a nice Body Slam or Fire Punch will certainly handle it.
The Team from Red's perspective:
Thanks to all who took the time to check this team out, and, so long as you keep to the team and structure of this team, please give any and all criticism!
