... (RMT Red Style)

Introduction

We all know him. He is THE Poke'mon master. Commonly mistaken for Ash, Red is the main hero in Generation I and the Generation III remakes, and the strongest opponent in Generation II. He is the symbol of Poke'mon Trainers, as seen in Super Smash Bros. All reveling aside, with the coming of HG & SS, I wanted to create a team that utilizes the Poke'mon used in the final battle in today's adept metagame. So, without further ado, let us honor the man that symbolizes all of us. The silent protagonist known as Red!

Charizard: The Anti-Lead
Item: Choice Scarf
Nature: Modest
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Sp.Atk / 180 Spe / 76 Def

Moveset:
  • Overheat
  • HP {Grass}
  • Focus Blast
  • Dragon Pulse
The Flame Pokemon:
Charizard has taken a fall of grace with each passing generation. With the introduction of Stealth Rock, Charizard is almost completely unusable. However, Charizard makes for a great Anti-lead, due to SR not being up, along with it's diverse move-pool that can take on plenty of the metagame's popular leads. Not to mention Charizard is the coolest poke'mon in the game.

It's use:
As said before, Charizard's purpose is to start the match and hit fast, along with hit hard. Choice Scarf makes sure to outspeed all non-scarfed leads, and, depending on said lead, choose an attack to counter it on the turn it would usually use to set up SR, Taunt, etc. The beauty of ScarfedZard is that few people actually see it coming, and, as I've witnessed on Shoddy, do strange things when going against it. I don't know how many lead Gyarados' I've battled, who try setting up a DD where I use HP Electric, Still to outspeed it and 2HKO it. That said, A Gyarados CAN OHKO with Waterfall, unless I get lucky and get the OHKO with HP.

Charizard utilities don't end at the beginning. ScarfedZard also makes an excellent Revenge Killer, even with SR on the field.

Now, the EVs... I'm having a little trouble with. The spread allows me to still outrun a +1 Gyarados, and outspeed a scarfed Flygon and Salamence, but I'm not exactly sure what a better spread would be. No HP EVs are given in order for it to survive two Stealth Rock Switch-Ins.

Leads:
482.png
Azelf:
Hit it twice. Most it can do is set up SR.
478.png
Froslass: Same case. I just have to worry about Hypnosis.
461.png
Weavile: NOTHING can save it from overheat.
460.png
Abomasnow: LOLZ.
450.png
Hippowdon: Unfortunately, He's one that I'd have to switch out on. Venusaur!
437.png
Bronzong: OHKO with Overheat
407.png
Roserade: DOOMED.
376.png
Metagross: Overheat. Are you getting the picture here?
373.png
Salamence: Will outspeed even Choice Scarf Variants, but is this short of OHKOing it. Not sure if it would one shot me.
291.png
Ninjask: Overheat. It's bound to die sooner or later.
286.png
Breloom: If Overheat missed against this bugger, I'd be so pissed off.
260.png
Swampert: D: SWITCH!
248.png
Tyranitar: *Prays Focus Blasts Hits.*
235.png
Smeargle: Hit it, and more than likely take the Spore.
169.png
Crobat: Unless it's holding a focus Sash, it's down.
142.png
Aerodactyl: switch. No way does Charizard want to take a rock slide.
130.png
Gyarados: Despite it being capable of OHKOing a Charizard with Waterfall, most people decide it's set-up fodder, making a HUGE mistake. ^0^
094.png
Gengar: Can usually hit it hard... Gotta watch out for the focus-sash / Hypnosis Trickster though.
068.png
Machamp: Overheat takes care of Balboa.

Early003.png

Venusaur: The Leech Support
Item: Black Sludge
Nature: Bold
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe

Moveset:
  • Grass Knot
  • Sleep Powder
  • Leech Seed
  • HP {Fire}
The Seed Pokemon:
....Why is this UU again? As far as I'm concerned, Venusaur is INCREDIBLE. The ability to take a hit, absorb Toxic Spikes, two great STAB moves, a sleep inducing move, leech seed.... No wonder it's the first evolution on the Poke'dex! I've even had this baby go toe-to-toe with Blissey numerous times, and I've won with leech seed and sludge bomb poisoning. I repeat, It's INCREDIBLE!

It's use:
Simply put, leech seed to restore damage, all while terrorizing it's opponents with STABs. Problem with a sweeper from the opposition? Sleep Powder, and there we go. Simple, but INCREDIBLE!

Blastoise: The Rapid-Spinning Trooper
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Bold
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe

Moveset:
  • Surf
  • Rapid Spin
  • Roar
  • Ice Beam
The Shellfish Pokemon:
Squirtle was the first Poke'mon I had received when I was seven, and Blastoise was the first final evolution I had gotten. This poke'mon was in my original team, and it will always be one of the greatest designs from GameFreak in my opinion.

Heartfelt stories aside, Blastoise does hold merit, particularly in this team. The ability to Rapid Spin Stealth Rock and Spikes is VERY important in my team, considering most are susceptible to spikes, and Charizard will never appreciate SR.

It's use:
Switch in on any sweeper, even a special, roar it away, and then Rapid Spin away any entry hazards that could give my team problems. The fact that it can take on Salamences gives it recognition too.

Pikachu-original.png

Pikachu: The mixed Sweeper
Item: Light Ball
Nature: Hasty
Ability: Static
EVs: 152 Atk / 104 Sp.Atk / 252 Spe

Moveset:
  • Thunderbolt
  • HP {Ice}
  • Brick Break
  • Grass Knot
The Mouse Pokemon:
Because there is no greater feeling in the world than OHKOing Tyranitar with a Pikachu. Hell, even SWAMPERTS don't want to get in the way of Pika's Grass knot! Red's strongest poke'mon, Pikachu makes for a great late game sweeper, when the opponent has been weakened, and faster threats have been handled. As powerful as it may be, however, and as widespread as it's moveset is, no matter WHAT, don't let Pikachu get hit.

Road Kill never looked so pitiful. :(

It's uses:
Stay hidden until the late game, where it shall both destroy and embarrass any survivors on the opposition. It may not be the strongest tyke in Kanto, but Pikachu sweeps are more fun than Shuckle sweeps.

196-Espeon.jpg

Espeon: The Dual Screen Supporter
Item: Light Clay
Nature: Timid
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 40 Def / 216 Spe

Moveset:
  • Psychic
  • Reflect
  • Light Screen
  • Wish
The Sun Pokemon:
Espeon - the only one of Red's team that did not derive from Kanto, but rather from Johto. But this team will not be segregating help from this Eevee-lution, as Espeon is the best support this team can get. Whether it be curing off that SR damage from Charizard, to making sure Pikachu can survive the switch, Espeon is a welcome friend to this group that makes the cruelties of battle a little more bearable.

It's Uses:
Espy usually comes in once Venusaur puts an opponent to sleep and leech seed it. Whether they keep it in, or switch, Espy has the speed to set up one Screen, and possibly the bulk to set up another. Around it's half life, Espeon is to take one for the team and use Wish, giving a free switch in to Pikachu, Charizard, or Snorlax to avenge it's death.

Early143.png

Snorlax: The Special-Tank
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Careful
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 168 HP / 120 Def / 220 Sp.Def

Moveset:
  • Body Slam
  • Curse
  • Rest
  • Fire Punch
The Sleeping Pokemon:
Another of my original team mates, and the Poke'mon that holds the closest place to my heart. The rest of the metagame can have their Scizors, Salamences, Metagrosses, and whatever Dragon or Steel, but I love this fatty.

Anyhow, Snorlax adds definite physical strength to my team, and with +2 Curses on it, all that will stop it is a roaring fiend.

It's use:
Snorlax usually comes in after Espeon's Reflect is set up, making sure to keep it's defense at check while it takes that time to set-up. Once we have the curses on, rest off any damage, then begin Landing on top of the opponents team with it's blob of man-meat. It won't need Reflect anymore with curse set up, and even if brick-breakers such as Salamence or Scizor comes in, a nice Body Slam or Fire Punch will certainly handle it.

The Team from Red's perspective:

Thanks to all who took the time to check this team out, and, so long as you keep to the team and structure of this team, please give any and all criticism!

NO SUBSTITUTES FOR THIS TEAM.

A shoutout to the silent hero - may we all repeat the words that make our hearts jump when we begin the battle on Mt. Silver!

On Charizard, i fail to see what Hidden Power [Electric] is hitting other than Gyarados. I would recommend Hidden Power [Grass], as you can then take on the more common Swampert Lead.

You also have a HUGE scizor weakness, the only pokemon i can see that could take it on is Charizard, however charizard needs to already be in to kill scizor. IMO, put Hidden Power [Fire] on venasaur over Sludge Bomb, sludge bomb as horrible coverage. Even though pikachu resists Scizor's Bullet Punch, it sure wont like taking one. Which is why i suggest replacing Hidden Power [Ice] for this. Pikachu's Thunderbolt is enough to take down dragons with SR down. Which brings me to another point. SR is CRUCIAL, and trust me, pikachu will do much better if you can get Stealth Rock somewhere on this team.

Also, how do you deal with Salamence, Gyarados or anything fairly speedy after a DD? For this i would make charizard Timid so he can weaken them, and force them into Outrage. Which then allows Venasuar to finish them off, as they are locked in Outrage. This is because if they are not locked into outrage, they will fire blast venasaur :-O.

TBH, I was searching for the list of leads, and since I couldn't find a viable source, I just went with the fact that I saw more Gyarados. I'll edit it to put HP Grass. I just don't like the amount of power I'd be losing if I change it to Timid. As for those pesky Dragon Dancers, I usually switch quick to Blastoise and roar them out. Although, maybe I should switch it to become bold, seeing as how Snorlax already takes Special Hits....

I agree with HP Fire on Venusaur though. Heatran's will still have fun switching in, but oh well.

Thanks for the Rate!

Oh, and, unfortunately, I don't know where I could get SR up. I don't think Blastoise has the move-slots to put it on him. :/

No Stealth Rock on the team is not good. Pikachu loves Stealth Rock support. Hidden Power (Fire) on Venusaur, for reasons previously stated. You don't have a sure-fire Scizor counter, but you can predict around him fairly well, and as long as Rocks aren't up, Charizard can check him well enough.

The biggest weakness I can see is Kingdra, who can really destroy this team given the chance. Venusaur's Sleep Powder is your best bet for it, but watch out for the shaky accuracy.

By the way, Occa Berry Lead Metagross will not lose to an Overheat, and may still get Rocks up. I know I wouldn't even keep him in against Charizard to begin with, but I suppose that's the goal of an anti-lead. lol @ your description of Abomasnow leads.

Dragon Dance Tyranitar can cause you some major problems, especially the Brick Break variant. He greatly threatens Espeon (who will be coming out late-game to set up screens), using it as set-up fodder. Honestly, though, the only Brick Break DDTar I've seen in the past month or so is my own (he really should be used more).

I like it. This is an example of using UU pokemon in OU and not completely failing at it.

Thanks Rhinosaur. There's nothing better than winning with the Underdog team. Anyhow, as I've seen, non of the team can learn SR. :/ Damn shame.

I do fear Dragon Dancers in general, which is why I'm going to change Blastoise into a physical wall. I'll be changing Venusaur as well.

Thanks for the rates guys. This is my first Smogon RMT, and I really appreciate having some input put into it!

Pretty Unique Team.

I would definetly change Charizard's HP to Grass so you can beat Swampert. (And possibly Hippowdon, since most don't run Stone Edge from my experience.) Venusaur and Blastoise handle Gyarados well enough.

Not sure what HP Ice on Pikachu helps you with( Every Dragon save Dragonite in OU outruns you), and the electric mouse is pretty frail as you mentioned. You could try Substitute over HP Ice to help ease prediction and give you a buffer against faster foes, but you can keep it if it helps for anything specific.

Other than that, good job, although SR somewhere, like others have stated, would greatly help you out.

Pikachu would then get walled by the likes of Celebi and Breloom (he is wicked dangerous.) Most Salamence I see are Adamant DD or Mild MixMence, so Pikachu will be able to outrun them (given that the Salamence has not DDed) and OHKO them just fine. HP Ice is a fine option.

All right; finally added the changes.

And, as for Substitute.... I found no point to it. if I was faster, I'd sub, then lose it like that. And, if I'm SLOWER, The Mouse Pokemon's dead. Everyone knows Pikachu needs to die, and quickly, so no one tries switching in, or setting up, because they're going to get hit hard.

I found, and ShoddyBattle backs me up on this, that it's better to just have as much coverage as possible on my mixed sweeper.

To Hippo from Charizard
Hidden Power [Grass] 140 Base Power
Overheat - 210 Base Power

just thought i would point that out

You could change your lead for Venusaur. Scarf Venusaur is a great lead, it can stop a lot of common leads with Sleep Powder, preventing your opponent from setting stealth rocks.

You could build your team around Belly Drum Charizard, with Venusaur to stop stealth rock leads and Blastoise to remove spikes and stealth rocks in the middle game.

I know you want to keep your team with specific pokemon, but ScarfVenasuar does look like a good idea, however it is outclassed by scarf Roserade.

Venusar is much bulkier than Rosarade and has acess to Earthquake, so it's not completly walled by Heatran and other fire pokemons.

TBH, I've tried the scarflead Venusaur out, and attempted a team based on Bellydrumming Charizard, but the results were not good. Even with a lead Venusaur, they still have the shot of setting up SR eventually, and Charizard's strength to take out many common leads in one to two shots, I have found, was the superior option.

You need to take a look at "Firestorm's" team.
It's a team based around belly drumming charizard and only uses Kanto pokemon and the team is amazing.

If Charizard is just an anti-lead I suggest giving him Max Evs in speed and Sp.Attack, and then 4 in defence or HP so that he can hit things as hard and as fast as possible. He has little longevity even with those EVs you have in defence, so may as well do as much damage as possible.

Just my opinion.

Don't you think this team lacks a lot in the "fire power" department?

Espeon can be very powerful and fast, yet it's just being used as a Screen setter and poor wish-passer. Charizard and Pikachu can only do so much, and an alright job at best.

There really is a limited amount to choose from when you have these exact 6 to mess with, but seeing Espeon with some more juice behind it would be nice. So you can actually injure sh1t.

Well, you forgot Snorlax. With two curses alone, Snorlax is capable of sweeping a great many.

Although, I do see your point, and Espeon stats do suggest it being a sweeper rather than support. But, as I said, pokemon like Snorlax and pikachu benefit greatly from the screens, and Espeon's speed definitely helps to fit the niche' of a dual-screen user; particularly when the move-slots on Venusaur and Blastoise are limited.
