This is the team that got me into the Top 8 at the VGC Dallas. I'm not quite sure if I'm going to the nationals yet, but I figured that I would post this up here to get some hints just in case.
Tyranitar ‘Molasses’ @ Iron Ball
Brave – Sand Stream
252 HP/252 Atk/4 Sp.Def
Rock Slide
Earthquake
Crunch
Protect
Tyranitar is the physical threat in this team. Most of the time, he will protect the first turn before beginning his onslaught. Rock Slide and Earthquake are both powerful attacks to take out the opponents. Rock Slide having a 46.71% flinch rate in double battles, and gives me a good STAB attack. Earthquake is an all around good attack, and Crunch takes care of any Ghosts which could cause me trouble.
Bronzong ‘Benny’ @ Lum Berry
Brave – Levitate
252 HP/176 Att/80 S.Def
- Explosion
- Rock Slide
- Trick Room
- Protect
Bronzong sets up the Trick Room. If I see a Fake Out coming, the first turn I will double protect. Taunts are responded to by Rock Slide and then Explosion, unless the opponent is threatening to take me out in one turn, in which case I will just use Explosion.
After the Trick Room is set up, Bronzong will Rock Slide until he has a good opportunity to use Explosion. The majority of opponents seem to expect either an immediate Explosion or none at all, so by putting it off for a while I increase the probability that Explosion will do the maximum damage.
Double Rock Slide can be an extremely powerful strategy which effectively halves the opposing team’s effectiveness, with a 71.60% of flinching an opponent Pokémon and a 21.82% chance of flinching both. This strategy enabled me to take down several Kyogres using nothing but Tyranitar and Bronzong after Trick Room was in play.
Smeargle ‘Summer’ @ Focus Sash
Relaxed – Own Tempo
LEVEL ONE
- Dark Void
- Endeavor
- Shadow Sneak
- Protect
This Smeargle can and will decimate the opponents team after Bronzong has exploded (or otherwise fainted). Normally I will use Dark Void as soon as Smeargle comes out, but if I expect a priority attack I will instead Protect and deal with the threat with my other Pokemon. 77.44% of the time, Dark Void will put both opponents to sleep, and Smeargle will commence helping out with cheap Endeavor kills. Shadow Sneak is my last resort Shedinja cure in case Tyranitar is knocked out when a last minute Shedinja comes in.
I debated whether Smeargle’s item should be Focus Sash or Wide Lens, but eventually decided on Wide Lens because of the residual damage caused by sandstorm. The extra 13.44% chance of putting both opponents to sleep comes in handy.
EDIT: I chose Focus Sash over Wide Lens to protect against priority moves.
Dialga ‘Tardis’ @ Expert Belt
Quiet - Pressure
252 HP/252 Sp.A/4 Sp.D
- Thunderbolt
- Blizzard
- Trick Room
- Protect
Dialga is the Special Sweeper who comes in to take over if Smeargle has been taken out and I run up against a physical wall. In the Dallas VGC, I very rarely needed to use Dialga. The secondary Trick Room is my Taunt protection, and will also allow me to refresh my Trick Room if need be.
The item was originally a Life Orb, but on Netbattle I found that the Life Orb lost more battles than it won.
My final battle with this team at Dallas VGCs: 62-87645-18365 (Yes, I know I should’ve used Dark Void… or possibly Trick Room the turn before… You’ll see. LoL)
