Draft Rotom

[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 7 onwards

**Price Range**: 3-4 points

**Overview**: Rotom is a cheap utility Pokemon that finds a niche with its useful immunities and ability to support its teammates with its plethora of disruptive moves, such as Will-O-Wisp and Thunder Wave, and pivoting ability with Volt Switch. Its best claim to fame is its ability to spinblock effectively against several of the most popular Rapid Spin users thanks to its immunity to Ground and Fighting and resistance to Steel. While it has few weaknesses and a decent STAB type combination, its low base stats leave it lacking both offensively and defensively, while its dearth of coverage means it struggles to scratch many bulkier Pokemon.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Utility**: Rotom's deep support movepool allows it to support its teammates through spreading status with Will-O-Wisp and Thunder Wave, disrupting opposing setup sweepers and walls with Trick, and pivoting with Volt Switch. Thanks to its low base HP, it can also use Pain Split very effectively to stay healthy while dealing significant damage to the opposing Pokemon.

**Offensive Pivot**: While Rotom's offensive stats leave a lot to be desired, Volt Switch and a good secondary STAB type in Ghost alongside a workable Speed tier make it a decent Choice Scarf user. The threat of Will-O-Wisp and Trick discourage many Ground-types from switching into it, allowing it to use Volt Switch more reliably.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Thunderbolt, Discharge, Volt Switch, Shadow Ball, Hex

**Setup Moves**: Nasty Plot

**Utility Moves**: Will-O-Wisp, Thunder Wave, Trick, Pain Split, Reflect, Light Screen, Substitute, Foul Play, Night Shade

**Coverage**: Dark Pulse

Niche Moves
========
**Eerie Impulse**: Eerie impulse can hinder special attackers that are unbothered by Rotom's other utility options, in particular allowing it to avoid becoming setup bait for Calm Mind sweepers.

Common Items
========
**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf allows Rotom to outspeed most of the unboosted metagame and pivot on a wider array of Pokemon. It also pairs extremely well with Trick, allowing Rotom to shut down an opposing setup sweeper or defensive wall.

**Colbur Berry**: Since many Pokemon that Rotom wants to switch in on can threaten it with Knock Off, Colbur Berry can allow it to spinblock more freely or give it an extra turn to land a crucial status move.

**Light Clay**: Rotom has access to dual screens and a pivot move, allowing it to be an effective setter in some matchups.

Niche Items
========
**Sitrus Berry**: As Rotom lacks reliable recovery, Sitrus Berry is useful to improve its longevity as well as allowing it to avoid certain 2HKOs.

**Rocky Helmet**: Rocky Helmet allows Rotom to get extra chip on opposing Pokemon that try to pivot out with U-turn or hit it with weaker coverage moves.

**Leftovers**: Leftovers can keep Rotom healthy in some matchups, although it usually doesn't spend enough turns on the field to heal significantly.

**Choice Specs**: Against teams that cannot effectively block Volt Switch, Rotom can use Choice Specs to deal serious damage as it pivots. Choice Specs also pairs very well with Trick.

**Damage-boosting Items**: In some matchups, Rotom can opt to boost its damage output with items such as Spell Tag and Magnet, allowing it to hit certain damage benchmarks. Spell Tag alongside Hex and a status move can be particularly devastating to teams weak to Ghost.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Although Rotom isn't weak to Stealth Rock and is immune to other entry hazards, it pivots in and out enough that Heavy-Duty Boots can sometimes be the best way to keep it healthy.

Tera
========
Due to Rotom's low base stats and the fact its main niche lies in its typing, it is not typically the first or second choice for a Tera Captain. However, it can benefit from Terastallization on drafts lacking a better option for a secondary Tera Captain. If chosen as a Tera Captain, Rotom can use Tera Ghost and Electric to boost its damage against teams weak to these types, or it can use types such as Tera Water and Fairy to gain coverage on offensive sets. It can also utilize types such as Tera Steel and Poison in combination with Levitate to check certain opposing Pokemon.

Draft Strategy
========
While Rotom should not be the core part of any draft, it functions well on entry hazard-heavy offense and bulky offense builds where its spinblocking, status-spreading, and pivoting talents are appreciated.

**Entry Hazards**: Pokemon such as Hisuian Samurott, Ting-Lu, and Glimmora can consistently set multiple layers of entry hazards, which Rotom can then ensure stay up.

**Strong Wallbreakers**: Since Rotom is typically not doing much damage on its own, it should be paired with strong wallbreakers such as Chi-Yu, Kyurem, and Landorus, which appreciate its pivoting and spinblocking support.

**Sweepers**: Sweepers such as Iron Valiant, Darkrai, and Tornadus-T benefit from Rotom's pivoting and ability to rack up chip via Volt Switch and keep up entry hazards. Its ability to spread burn and paralysis onto potential revenge killers can also facilitate a sweep.

**Dark- and Ghost-resistant Pokemon**: Rotom's lack of bulk means it usually struggles to take more than one hit, so is best paired with bulky Dark- and Ghost-resistant Pokemon such as Ting-Lu, Krookodile, and Overqwil that it can pivot to after using one of its utility moves.

Checks and Counters
========
**Thunder Wave-immune Special Attackers**: Special attackers such as Raging Bolt, Thundurus-T, and Landorus cannot be paralyzed with Thunder Wave and are unbothered by Will-O-Wisp, allowing them to switch into Rotom fairly freely.

**Specially Defensive Walls**: Defensive Pokemon such as Ting-Lu, Amoonguss, and Sylveon take very little from Rotom's attacks and are much less bothered by status moves than their offensive teammates. However, Volt Switch paired with a strong wallbreaker can allow it to take advantage of an obvious switch.

**Lum Berry / Substitute**: Rotom's low bulk means it often only gets one chance to land a status move against an offensive Pokemon. A well-placed Lum Berry or well-timed Substitute can lead to it failing to cripple the opposing Pokemon and being swiftly KOed.

**Draft Order**: Round 6-7 onwards

**Price Range**: 3-5

**Overview**: Rotom is a cheap utility Pokemon that finds a niche with its useful immunities and plethora of disruptive moves, with its best claim to fame being its ability to spinblock several of the most popular Rapid Spin users thanks to its immunity to ground and fighting, and resistance to steel. Maybe a sentence or two about its ability to pivot and spread both para and burn. While it has few weaknesses and a decent STAB combination, its low base stats leave it lacking both offensively and defensively. I would mention its lack of coverage as well

Common Roles

**Utility**: Rotom's deep support movepool allow it to support its teammates through spreading status with Will-O-Wisp and Thunder Wave, disrupting opposing setup sweepers and walls with Trick, and pivoting with Volt Switch. The threat of Will-O-Wisp and Trick discourage many Ground-types from switching into it, allowing it to use Volt Switch more reliably.

**Setup Sweeper**: Rotom can use Nasty Plot to function as a setup sweeper or wallbreaker against drafts with shaky answers to it.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Thunderbolt, Discharge, Volt Switch, Shadow Ball, Hex

**Setup Moves**: Nasty Plot

**Utility Moves**: Will-O-Wisp, Thunder Wave, Trick, Pain Split, Reflect, Light Screen, Substitute, Foul Play, Night Shade

**Coverage**: Dark Pulse, Stored Power Move to niche, probably never bringing this unless some weird cheese set with weakness policy or blunder policy

Niche Moves
========
**Eerie Impulse**: Eerie impulse can hinder special attackers that are unbothered by Rotom's other utility options, in particular allowing Rotom to avoid becoming setup bait for Calm Mind sweepers.

Common Items
========
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Rotom is a pivot, so boots mean it can come in and spinblock and not take unrecoverable chip, probably its best item along with scarf

**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf allows Rotom to outspeed most of the unboosted metagame and pivot on a wider array of Pokemon. It also pairs extremely well with Trick, allowing Rotom to shut down an opposing setup sweeper or defensive wall.

**Colbur Berry**: Since many Pokemon that Rotom wants to switch in on can threaten it with Knock Off, Colbur Berry can allow Rotom to spinblock more freely or give it an extra turn to land a crucial status move. Moved this below scarf, I think its slightly less common than the two above it

Niche Items
========
**Leftovers**: Leftovers improve Rotom's longevity, as it lacks reliable recovery moves

**Sitrus Berry**: Sitrus Berry is an alternative to Leftovers that works well in faster-paced games, as well as allowing Rotom to avoid certain 2HKO's. Probably better served by taking a resist berry in any matchup you might want sitrus in

**Rocky Helmet**: Rocky Helmet allows Rotom to get extra chip on opposing Pokemon which try to pivot out with U-turn or hit it with weaker coverage moves.

**Light Clay**: Rotom has access to dual screens and a pivot move, allowing it to be an effective setter in some matchups.

**Damage-boosting Items**: Against teams that are weak to its STAB combination, Rotom can use items such as Choice Specs Move to its own section, plays differently than things like Magnet/Expert Belt/etc and Spell Tag to hit certain damage benchmarks.

**Ability Shield**: Ability Shield lets Rotom avoid Levitate being ignored, notably giving it a favorable matchup into Mold Breaker Excadrill.

Tera
========
Due to Rotom's low base stats and the fact its main niche lies in its typing, Rotom is not typically a good choice for a Tera Captain. However, it can benefit from Terastallization on drafts lacking a better option for a secondary Tera Captain. If chosen as a Tera Captain, Rotom can use Tera Ghost or Electric to boost its damage against teams weak to these types, or types such Water or Fairy to gain coverage on offensive sets. It can also utilize types such as Steel and Poison in combination with Levitate to check certain opposing Pokemon.

Draft Strategy
========
While Rotom should not be the core part of any draft, it functions well on hazard-heavy offense and bulky offense builds where its spinblocking ability and other supporting tools are appreciated. Mention its pivoting as well, sweepers appreciate chip and burn on possible revenge killers

**Entry Hazards**: Pokemon such as Samurott-Hisui, Ting-Lu, and Glimmora can consistently set multiple layers of hazards, which Rotom can then ensure stay up.

**Strong Wallbreakers**: Since Rotom is typically not doing much damage on its own, it should be paired with strong wallbreakers such as Chi-Yu, Kyurem, and Landorus, which appreciate its pivoting and spinblocking support.

**Sweepers**: Volt switch chip + keeping hazard up + spreading twave sets your sweeper up for the endgame

**Dark- and Ghost-resistant Pokemon**: Rotom's lack of bulk means it usually struggles to take more than one hit, so is best paired with bulky Dark- and Ghost-resistant Pokemon, such as Ting-Lu, Krookodile, and Overqwil, that it can pivot into after using one of its utility moves.

Checks and Counters
========
**Thunder Wave-immune Special Attackers**: Special attackers such as Raging Bolt, Thundurus-Therian, and Landorus cannot be paralyzed with Thunder Wave and are unbothered by Will-O-Wisp, allowing them to switch into Rotom fairly freely. Having specially defensive teammates and solid answers to Electric- and Ground-types helps avoid this becoming a serious issue.

**Specially Defensive Walls**: Defensive Pokemon such as Ting-Lu, Amoongus, and Sylveon take very little from Rotom's attacks and are much less bothered by status moves than their offensive teammates. However, Volt Switch paired with a strong wallbreaker can allow Rotom to take advantage of an obvious switch. Rotom is also capable of breaking many walls on its own with Nasty Plot and Hex.

**Lum Berry/Substitute**: Rotom's low bulk means it often only gets one chance to land a status move against an offensive Pokemon. A well-placed Lum Berry or well-timed Substitute can lead to Rotom failing to cripple the opposing Pokemon and being swiftly KO'd. Rotom should therefore be paired with other ways of dealing with setup sweepers, such as teammates with phazing moves.

**Defog Users**: While Rotom can block Rapid Spin effectively, it can't do anything to prevent Pokemon like Corviknight, Weezing-Galar and Mandibuzz from using Defog removing hazards. Hazard-heavy teams drafting Rotom should also make sure to include a fast taunt user such as Roaring Moon, Greninja or Tornadus-Therian to function well into teams with Defog.

implemented most of the AMQC, thanks!
the things i kept different were
  • colbur berry above boots - i feel like colbur is more common since most things it wants to switch in on are able to hit it with knock off etc, and it doesn't take much from hazards anyway. i could be wrong though so i'm happy to change this
  • left sitrus berry in - seems common enough to mention, there's enough things that don't have/won't run a super-effective move for it but still threaten a 2hko. again happy to change if you think it's too rare to include
lmk if i left something out or missed the point with any of the additions!

Not sure if this is common enough to be a full on role for Rotom nowadays. If QC2 puts it back I won't complain, but I doubt many drafts will actually be weak to it and it's definitely a lot less common than the other two.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Thunderbolt, Discharge, Volt Switch, Shadow Ball, Hex

**Setup Moves**: Nasty Plot

**Utility Moves**: Will-O-Wisp, Thunder Wave, Trick, Pain Split, Reflect, Light Screen, Substitute, Foul Play, Night Shade

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Heavy-Duty Boots are often the best item to keep Rotom healthy, as it rarely wants to stay on the field long enough to gain much recovery from Leftovers.
Move this to the bottom of niche since it's not weak to rocks and has Levitate. Hard to justify over other options, but it's at least usable as a spinblocker.

Niche Items
========
**Leftovers**: Leftovers improve Rotom's longevity, as it lacks reliable recovery moves.
Move this below Rocky Helmet

**Sitrus Berry**: Sitrus Berry is an alternative to Leftovers that works well in faster-paced games, as well as allowing Rotom to avoid certain 2HKO's.

Move this to the bottom of common

**Choice Specs**: Against teams that cannot effectively block Volt Switch, Rotom can use Choice Specs to deal serious damage as it pivots. Choice Specs also pairs very well with Trick.

**Damage-boosting Items**: In some matchups, Rotom can opt to boost its damage output with items such as Spell Tag and Magnet, allowing it to hit certain damage benchmarks. Spell Tag alongside Hex and a status move can be particularly devastating to teams weak to Ghost.

Too niche

Changed phrasing a bit cause I've seen a decent amount of Tera Rotom, but really only on drafts that don't have anything better as you already said.

Hazard-heavy teams drafting Rotom should also make sure to include a fast taunt user such as Roaring Moon, Greninja or Tornadus-T to function well into teams with Defog.
This isn't necessarily a check/counter to Rotom itself as it honestly matches up well into the few relevant Defog users. It's also applicable to any Ghost-type so I feel it doesn't need to be said regardless.

However, it can benefit from Terastallization on drafts lacking a better option for a secondary Tera Captain. If chosen as a Tera Captain, Rotom can use Tera Ghost or and Electric to boost its damage against teams weak to these types, or it can use types such as Tera Water or and Fairy to gain coverage on offensive sets. It can also utilize types such as Tera Steel and Poison in combination with Levitate to check certain opposing Pokemon.

Draft Strategy
========
While Rotom should not be the core part of any draft, it functions well on entry hazard-heavy offense and bulky offense builds where its spinblocking, status-spreading, (AC) and pivoting talents are appreciated.

**Entry Hazards**: Pokemon such as Hisuian Samurott-H, Ting-Lu, and Glimmora can consistently set multiple layers of entry hazards, which Rotom can then ensure stay up.

**Strong Wallbreakers**: Since Rotom is typically not doing much damage on its own, it should be paired with strong wallbreakers such as Chi-Yu, Kyurem, and Landorus, which appreciate its pivoting and spinblocking support.

**Sweepers**: Likewise, sweepers Sweepers such as Iron Valiant, Darkrai, (AC) and Tornadus-T also benefit from Rotom's pivoting and ability to rack up chip via Volt Switch and keeping keep up entry hazards. Rotom's Its ability to spread burns or burn and paralysis onto potential revenge killers can also facilitate a sweep.

**Dark- and Ghost-resistant Pokemon**: Rotom's lack of bulk means it usually struggles to take more than one hit, so is best paired with bulky Dark- and Ghost-resistant Pokemon (RC) such as Ting-Lu, Krookodile, and Overqwil (RC) that it can pivot into to after using one of its utility moves.

Checks and Counters
========
Having specially defensive teammates and solid answers to Electric- and Ground-types helps avoid this becoming a serious issue (RP)

**Specially Defensive Walls**: Defensive Pokemon such as Ting-Lu, Amoongus Amoonguss, and Sylveon take very little from Rotom's attacks and are much less bothered by status moves than their offensive teammates. However, Volt Switch paired with a strong wallbreaker can allow Rotom it to take advantage of an obvious switch. Rotom is also cabable of breaking many walls on its own with Nasty Plot and Hex (RP)

**Lum Berry / Substitute**: Rotom's low bulk means it often only gets one chance to land a status move against an offensive Pokemon. A well-placed Lum Berry or well-timed Substitute can lead to Rotom it failing to cripple the opposing Pokemon and being swiftly KO'd KOed. Rotom should therefore be paired with other ways of dealing with setup sweepers, such as teammates with phazing moves (RP) (This section focuses on what checks rotom, not how rotom gets around its checks)
