ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER!

simon-lagann-hen.jpg

Well, this time Matt brought you an underrated threat: Yanmega. And now everyone will say: but Volcarona is better!!11!1ELEVEN!
I know that. But Volcarona cannot have 3 things that Yanmega has: first, a Ground immunity, which always helps. Second, STAB Air Slash that allows me to OHKO every Volcarona with a bit of previous damage and OHKO Conkeldurr. Third, Speed Boost. With Protect, I gain a +1 Speed every time I need it. This allows me to revenge kill non-scarf Latios, almost every Fighting type, and Alakazam. Not bad for a dragonfly, uh?

--BUILDING PROCESS--

Obviously, the team starts from my bug. The first thing I needed was a sinergy with Yanmega. SR are a must on every team too. So my choice for the second slot was Heatran, which has a hand x4 resistance to Ice, resistance to Flying and Flash Fire for Fire moves. Yanmega helped the sinergy with a x4 resistance to Fighting and a Ground immunity.

Now, now. I need a Rapid Spinner, since Stealth Rock is a nightmare for my dragonfly. I chose Forretress, because of his sinergy with Heatran, Spikes and Volt Change that allows me to gain momentum. It's a great check for Haxorus too.

2 walls, no reliable recovery. I hate when I have no reliable recovery. And VolTurn destroys my team whenever he wants. This is where my little Latias came out.

Bulky DDDos loves my team. I need a revenge killer for Dragonite, a fullstop for CMLatias and some glue for the team. Hi, Rotom-W! This washing machine has great sinergy with Heatran and helps Yanmega's final sweep with Volt Switch.

Now. I have only special attackers. Blissey sleeps on me all the day. I have 2 choices: Conkeldurr and Mienshao. Conkeldurr is slow, and doesn't work in this team. So I chose Mienshao, mainly because of U-Turn and HJK that OHKOes a lot of Pokémon after SR, Spikes and Fake Out. With this set I baitkill Hippowdon too. °u°

Ok, now let's go for

A CLOSER LOOK

---YANMEGA---

F-15 Eagle @ Life Orb
Trait:
Speed Boost
EVs:
4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature
(+SAtk, -Atk)

  • Bug Buzz - Very powerful and reliable STAB for Yanmega. OHKOes almost every Psychic in the tier that is weak to it (CMind Latias takes a minimum of 85%, that is almost always OHKO with SR in play).
  • sI4AAAAASUVORK5CYII=
    Air Slash -
Another great STAB in a metagame full of Fighting types to the like of Conkeldurr, Mienshao and Virizion, and Grass types like Venusaur and every other Clorophyll sweeper.
  • Protect - With this I gain a free turn of +1 speed whenever I want. I can scout what my enemy wants to do too.
  • Hidden Power [Fire] - Ferrothorn is a bitch. Scizor too. With this I'm able to OHKO the latter and seriously damage the former.
Why this Pokémon?

I love this Pokémon, it's one of my favourites since the DPPt era. I made this team focusing on him, so it's logical that he's here.

Why the set?

Well, since Yanmega has no boosting moves for the SpA, I needed as much power as possible while being still able to switch between attacks. That's why I gave him a Life Orb, Modest Nature and 252 SpA EVs. 252 Spd EVs for being fast like a meteor after a +1 (I reach 432 Spd), 4 in Def so that I have odd HP and I can switch on SR twice.

---HEATRAN---

Radiator @ Leftovers
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)

  • Stealth Rock - SR are a must for almost every competitive team. They help my Yanmega sweep a lot and are his worst enemy too. Destiny is strange.
  • Protect - Since Heatran has no reliable recovery, with Protect I gain another 6% from Leftovers. It allows me to scout something like CBZor o ScarfTom-W efficiently.
  • Roar - Phazes Volcarona and, together with SR, dismantles Sun teams. I can Roar Outrage-locked Dragons too.
  • Lava Plume - Good BP, STAB move, and 30% burn, which helps Heatran a lot, since the EVs are focused on SpD.

Why this Pokémon?

It has a great sinergy with Yanmega, since it's able to obliterate Fire and Ice types, while Yanmega can OHKO Fighting types or come on Earthquakes.

Why the set?

This is the best set for him in a metagame full of rain. Maxed special bulk and HP in order to take Volcarona's hit easily and be a check of Specs Tornadus locked on Hurricane. Leftovers is a great item for every wall. Lava Plume weakens physical threats, and having only Forretress to counter them, helps a lot.

---FORRETRESS---

Cannonball @ Shed Shell
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)

  • Spikes - Staple on a wall like Forretress, I can put multiple layers with ease.
  • Gyro Ball - Great STAB move, with -Spd nature and 0 IV, allows me to check DDHaxorus.
  • Rapid Spin - I absolutely need my field clear of entry hazard, since Stealth Rock is the bane of Yanmega and Mienshao, Heatran and Forretress hate Spikes.
  • Volt Switch - Great scouting move, allows me to gain offensive momentum. It combines well with Volt Switch of Rotom-W and U-Turn of Mienshao.

Why this Pokémon?

Great wall, only a weakness covered by Heatran, immense Def, Rapid Spin, entry hazards, good check for non-Fire Blast DDNite and Haxorus, check for weakened Landorus- I think it's enough.

Why the set?

Physical Defensive Forretress since Heatran takes all the Draco Meteors. 252 Def and HP EVs are obvious, 4 in SpD to help his special bulk a bit. -Spd nature and 0 IV to maximize the power of Gyro Ball. Spikes are the most powerful entry hazard and I love them. Volt Switch over Toxic Spikes since I don't need poison here.

---LATIAS---

Little sis' @ Leftovers
Trait:
Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 48 SAtk / 208 SDef
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)

  • Wish - Great move for supporting my team, since both my walls (Heatran and Forretress) have no recovery.
  • Protect - With thisI gain another 6% from Leftovers and I'm sure that my Wish heal will work. It allows me to scout CBZor and CScarf Landorus efficiently. Great against VolTurn.
  • Dragon Pulse - Reliable STAB move to finish weakened enemies or unboosted dragons.
  • Hidden Power [Fire] - Key of the set. With a +SAtk nature and the given EVs, I'm able to OHKO CBZor after Stealth Rocks damage. With Protect that allows me to scout his move, it's a surefire OHKO.

Why this Pokémon?

I needed a Wish support for the team, especially for Forretress and Heatran. Latias is a great choice since she takes without problems Fire, Water, Fighting and Ground moves. Heatran and Forretress are able to take Draco Meteor/Outrage for her, as well as Ice, Ghost and Dark moves.

Why the set?

252 HP EVs to maximize mixed bulk. 48 SpA EVs together with a +SAtk nature allow me to OHKO CBZor. The rest in SpD to help is already great special bulk.

---ROTOM-W---

Washer @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)

  • Volt Switch - Great scouting and STAB move. With this I can OHKO Gyarados while still maintaining my momentum. Ground types won't come because of the fear of Hydro Pump.
  • Hydro Pump - Powerful STAB move. This, combined with Volt Switch, allow me to dismantle Rain teams without Gastrodon. I can revengekill non-Choice Scarf Terrakion and SDLandorus with this.
  • Hidden Power [Ice] - HP Ice guarantee perfect coverage with Volt Switch and Hydro Pump and allows Rotom-W to counter +1 Dragonite after SR Damage and Salamence.
  • Trick - I can cripple every wall giving a Choice Scarf to them. Ferrothorn will become useless, Blissey is setup fodder for Forretress and Bronzong DIES without Leftovers.

Why this Pokémon?

I chose Rotom-W not only for being able to check a lot of threats on the current metagame, but for his great typing too, with only a Grass weakness, that combines perfectly with Heatran and Latias. I needed an other revenge killer too, since Yanmega loses to things like LOSDScizor.

Why the set?

I like the speed that Scarf Rotom-W has, combined with the ability to scout enemy's moves via Volt Switch. Trick is a great move, that destroys setup sweeper and walls. HP Ice over HP Fire, Pain Split or Will-O-Wisp since I have many ways to deal with Ferrothorn, I have Wish support and Lava Plume from Heatran to burn everyone.

---MIENSHAO---

DeadlyDancer @ Life Orb
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Naive Nature (+Spd, -SDef)

  • Fake Out - Every time Mienshao comes, I Fake Out my opponent for free damage. After that, I usually U-Turn away in order to active Regenerator.
  • U-turn - See Fake Out. Anyway, I OHKO Celebi with this.
  • Hi Jump Kick - 4 words to describe it: OH MY FUCKING GOD. 130 STAB BP with Life Orb and 349 Atk are so powerful that even Skarmory is 2HKOed by it. It's really overpowered. And if it misses, I switch out and let Regenerator do the rest.
  • Grass Knot - With this move I'm able to deal huge damage to some of Mienshao counters, like Hippowdon or Jellicent. Really powerful.

Why this Pokémon?

I needed a physical attacker able to OHKO Blissey, who was walling my whole team. Conkeldurr was too slow, and in this team doesn't work well. STAB HJK, Fake Out and Regenerator convinced me.

Why the set?

This is the standard set, with a twist on the last slot, usually occuped by Stone Edge or HP Ice. Fake Out is to kill something weak not called Gengar, HJK is EPIC, U-Turn helps to scout and GK OHKOes Hippowdon.

Your team looks pretty solid, but I feel you can't really touch Heatran without Meinshao or Rotom-W. Perhaps that's enough, but running Earth Power on Heatran over protect means you can predict a switch in, and nail a fellow Heatran before it presents a problem. Protect works better with Toxic. Just a thought.

Well, losing Mienshao is difficult, because of Regenerator. And Rotom-W has a Choice Scarf, so it's rare that they hit it. But I'll give a try anyway °u°

Nice presentation :)
I think you could use a Recover, Calm Mind, Refresh, Dragon Pulse, 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe Timid Latias over your current one, for a few reasons. Most importantly, it gives you another answer to Blissey; having only Mienshao can prove troubling against a food switcher, who will wear it out and wall the rest of your team with Blissey. Furthermore, this switch is not a big loss: Wish support is great, but IMO not reliable enough for the times it pays off, as there may be problems trying to switch Heatran / Forry in, and predictions will kill them trying to heal. The new Latios will also draw in Steel-types, but your team has a good answer to them, with Heatran to scare them off and place Stealth Rock or Roar for more residual damage, and Hidden Power Fires to do good damage. Other than that, nice job!

Nice team you got there, but Specs Politoad seems a mayor problem to this team. Without Latias, Specs Hydro Pump will OHKO anything in your team and 2HKO Rotom-W considering that HP Fire is doing pathetic damage to Scizor in rain. Since you lack a spinner, a well-played stall will defeat this team easily. To solve this problems, I would like to suggest Bulk Up Breloom instead of Mieanshao who doesnt benefits your team at all. With the Sp.Def EVs, Breloom has a field day on Rain-stall teams countering them hard with Drain Punch + Toxic Heal recovery & STAB Seed Bomb. Spore can make a pokemon useless (I would suggest to bring it on a spinner, since they wont risk a pokemon like Skarmory to take the Spore), and setting up with Bulk Up.

Although Forretress is a good Rapid-spinner, if your purpose is to sweep with Yanmega, you will definitely appreciate to get rid of Ghost-types which is something Forretress cant do without the proper support (like CB T-tar to pursuit them). To solve this problem, my second suggestion is to replace Forretress for Life Orb Starmie. Starmie is faster, stronger, and with a Life Orb equipped, Starmie´s Hydro Pump murders Gengar while Thunderbolt 2HKOs Jellicent after Stealth Rock. It is also more durable by itself, so it does not really needs Wish support to still survive on the field.

My third option is to replace Rotom-W for Physically Defensive Skarmory to still keep that insurance against Dragons and tank their hits, since Mieanshao & Rotom-W form a weak Turn/Switch core. Skarmory still sets Spikes up and it can Whirlwind any boosts they try to grab. Leftovers gives some nifty recovery while Shed Shell trolls Drag-Mag teams.

As minor changes, change Yanmega´s EV spread to 104 Def / 252 SpA / 152 Spe to avoid a OHKO from Scizor´s Bullet Punch and Dragonite´s Extremespeed. 152 Speed still allows you to outspeed Jolteon after a boost. For Latias, change the EV spread to 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Speed. Latias will apreciate to win a Speed tie against a weakened Latios and KO first before it does anything, and she already has a blasting Sp.Def so there is no need to invest on it. Replace Protect & Roar in Heatran for Earth Power and Hidden Power Ice respectively. Skarmory already phazes any boost pokemon try to get, and you will need an extra-insurance when dealing with Heatrans & Dragonite. HP Ice still OHKOs Dragonite after SR and Earth Power 2HKOs opposing bulk Trans.

My apologies for suggesting a lot of changes for your team, I try to avoid that but the idea of using Yanmega simply excited me as I abused him on 4th gen before and brought me good memories :). Here is a little conclusion of my changes:
*Bulk Up Breloom > Mienshao
*Life Orb Starmie > Forretress
*Physically Defensive Skarmory > Rotom-W

-104 Def / 252 SpA / 152 Spe on Yanmega
-252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe on Latias
-Stealth Rock / Lava Plume / Earth Power / HP Ice on Heatran

You can find here the pokemon´s sets below:

Hope this helps and I am sorry if I was too drastic! Really good to see someone build a team around Yanmega :).

Hi, cool team and nice to see something a little different. Anyway, I noticed that opposing Heatran seem to a big problem for you; it walls 2/3 of your team. The only things on your team that can hit Heatran for good damage is the shaky Hydro Pump on Rotom and High Jump Kick on Mienshao. An easy solution would be to swap HP fire with HP ground on Yanmega. HP fire is not that useful because Ferrothorn is handled by Heatran/Mienshao and Forretress can set up on it all day. I would also second Motagua's suggestion for bulk up Breloom over Mienshao. It gives you another way of handling rain teams as well as Volt-Turn.
