Nominating Vaporeon as a check. Although it resists Fire Blast, it dislikes taking a Solar Beam at +2, and Psyshock hurts quite a bit too. Protect helps with stalling out turns for Solar Beam, so you will only really be worried about Psyshock.

+2 252 SpA Ninetales Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Vaporeon: 282-334 (60.7 - 71.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Snorlax @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 188 HP / 152 Def / 168 SpD
Careful Nature
- Body Slam
- Curse
- Rest
- Darkest Lariat

cuz of thick fat and its high base hp, along with investment in both its defensive stats, every move from ninetales at +2 is a 4hko at best, 5hko at worst. in return, body slam has a chance to 2hko and can even fish for para which would make ninetales less effective throughout the course of the game. spread taken from analysis, could probs be optimised or smth, but w/e too lazy etc etc.
+2 252 SpA Ninetales Fire Blast vs. 188 HP / 168+ SpD Thick Fat Snorlax in Sun: 142-168 (27.9 - 33%) -- 85.9% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Ninetales Solar Beam vs. 188 HP / 168+ SpD Snorlax: 137-162 (26.9 - 31.8%) -- 42.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Ninetales Psyshock vs. 188 HP / 152 Def Snorlax: 147-173 (28.9 - 34%) -- 99.3% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Nominating Turtonator as a Counter

1590289844525.png

Turtonator @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Shell Armor
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Flamethrower
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin
- Will-O-Wisp

Not exactly the most viable pokemon, but it makes its niche through just how hard it counters Ninetales. It's not that good of a spinner, but it's a VERY good check to fire types.

+2 252 SpA Ninetales Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Turtonator in Sun: 78-92 (24 - 28.3%) -- 97.8% chance to 4HKO
+2 252 SpA Ninetales Psyshock vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Turtonator: 98-116 (30.2 - 35.8%) -- 37.9% chance to 3HKO
0- Atk Turtonator Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Ninetales: 134-158 (46.6 - 55%) -- 62.1% chance to 2HKO

While using a -Atk nature takes away the guaranteed 2HKO, outspeeding base 30s and below is more valuable in my opinion, as you can status or KO a Steelix, Raj, Aromatisse, etc. while still slapping Ninetales incredibly hard

Turtonator can come on Ninetales at any point, and can tank any attack it throws at it with its excellent 4x resist to Ninetales's most powerful attacks. Turtonator can choose to chunk it with an Earthquake, remove hazards, or predict a switch and burn an incoming pokemon.

While Turtonator can certainly be worn down, it should not be run on a team without a cleric, and the ability to switch in on any of Ninetales's moves means it can receive a Wish at low health, letting it check Ninetales for an even longer amount of time.

Nominating Charizard as a CHECK

Charizard @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 120 HP / 136 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fire Blast
- Roost
- Defog
- Toxic

Charizard has become a staple fire resist in the meta with a good natural bulk (especially if running hp) and reliable recovery in roost. Zard also clocks in at a great natual speed stat of 100, meaning it will be able to get roosts off easily throughout the match. The problem with 100 base speed however, is that it speed ties with Ninetales, which is why it is being ruled as a check, and not a counter.
Zard walls walls Ninetales unboosted easily, as Fire Blast does a measly 34.5 - 40.6% in sun , and can then roost off the damage, or threaten to hit back with sun boosted Fire Blast (37.6 - 44.5%). Ninetales can Nasty Plot up on Zard, but has to worry about being worn down by the repeated Fire Blasts, or Toxic, and then has to worry about the Sun turns being used up, as without the sun, Ninetales is inherently kinda weak.
With this investment, Zard has some hp to be used as a check to many things in the meta with its great defensive typing, and still packing a punch with its special attack. And the best part is, after forcing Tales out, Zard still has the sun in it's favor to Blast things away.

Drampa @ Leftovers
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 220 HP / 252 SpA / 36 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dragon Pulse
- Flamethrower
- Hyper Voice
- Roost

:drampa: is a very good check to ninetales because drampa's dragon typing allows it to resist ninetales fire stab in fire blast. drampa Also resists ninetales most common second slot in
solar beam and also takes very little damage from psyshock. drampa also doesnt get 3 Ohkoed by ninetales fire blast in the sun while in return drampa can 2 ohko it with hyper voice.
drampa also has access to recovery in roost which allows it to perfectly check ninetales both offensively and defensively. overall drampa is a great offensive check to ninetales.

calcs:
252+ SpA Drampa Dragon Pulse vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Ninetales: 157-186 (54.7 - 64.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Drampa Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Ninetales in Sun: 83-98 (28.9 - 34.1%) -- 2.9% chance to 3HKO
252+ SpA Drampa Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Ninetales: 166-196 (57.8 - 68.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Ninetales Fire Blast vs. 220 HP / 0 SpD Drampa in Sun: 106-126 (30.1 - 35.7%) -- 34.9% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
Ninetales Solar Beam vs. Sap Sipper Drampa: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252 SpA Ninetales Psyshock vs. 220 HP / 0 Def Drampa: 73-87 (20.7 - 24.7%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

+2 252 SpA Ninetales Fire Blast vs. 220 HP / 0 SpD Drampa in Sun: 212-250 (60.2 - 71%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Ninetales Psyshock vs. 220 HP / 0 Def Drampa: 146-172 (41.4 - 48.8%) -- 15.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Mudsdale with an Assault Vest is not 2HKOd by Solar Beam or Fire Blast in the Sun and is not OHKOd by +2 of either moves. Mudsdale also OHKOs Ninetales with Earthquake.
This is a CHECK.

Thanks to his type + thick fat+ the decent bulk it has , the apple is one of the only mons in the tier that is able to avoid the 2hko from tales attacks at +2 , while thanks to his acess to eq it 2hko's in return , meaning that in a situation in which the apple its at full health its always going to win bar hax vs tales.
+2 252 SpA Ninetales Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thick Fat Appletun in Sun: 163-193 (38.4 - 45.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Nomming spdef Claydol as a check.

Claydol @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin

Claydol can't be 2HKO'd by Ninetales by any move when they both come in fresh, while Claydol can 2HKO with Earthquake. Ninetales can plot but still will not gain enough power to OHKO with either solarbeam or fireblast.

4 Atk Claydol Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Ninetales: 204-242 (71 - 84.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Ninetales Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Claydol: 122-144 (37.6 - 44.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Ninetales Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Claydol in Sun: 126-148 (38.8 - 45.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Jolly Nature

There is not much to say about passimian, it is a great check of ninetals since you can do OHKO with CC or EQ and you can even win romentum with u-turn if the necessary can hold 2 blows of psychock and have more than 70% of taking a hit from fire blast

252 Atk Choice Band Passimian Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Ninetales: 352-415 (122.6 - 144.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Passimian Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Ninetales: 392-462 (136.5 - 160.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Piloswine @ Eviolite
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard

Check. Needs to come in safely without question. The reason for this is despite Thicc Fat, it cannot take 2 Fire Blasts in the sun:

252 SpA Ninetales Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Eviolite Thick Fat Piloswine in Sun: 200-236 (49.5 - 58.4%) -- 98.4% chance to 2HKO

But should it come in safely w/o taking damage, it easily drops Ninetales with a simple EQ:

252+ Atk Piloswine Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Ninetales: 380-450 (132.4 - 156.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
