S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC / CS / CoP Discussion

I was very disappointed when I went into the search function of this board and did not see a thread about any of these games;

These games are just about by far my favorite series of games with the exception of a few other gems like Half-Life and Bioshock.

Official site: http://www.stalker-game.com/

Wikipedia:

The games feature an alternate reality theme, where a second nuclear disaster occurs at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the near future and causes strange changes in the area around it. The game has a non-linear storyline and features gameplay elements such as trading and two-way communication with NPCs. The game includes elements of role-playing and business simulation games.

The background and some terminology of the game ("The Zone", "Stalker") is borrowed from the popular science fiction novella Roadside Picnic by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky and the 1979 Andrei Tarkovsky film Stalker that was loosely based on it, as well as Stalker, the film's subsequent novelization by the original authors.

In S.T.A.L.K.E.R, the player assumes the identity of an amnesiac "Stalker", an illegal explorer/artifact scavenger in "The Zone", named "The Marked One". "The Zone" is the location of an alternate reality version of the Zone of alienation surrounding the Chernobyl Power Plant after a second, fictitious explosion, which further contaminated the surrounding area with radiation and caused strange otherworldly changes in local fauna, flora and the laws of physics. "Stalker" in the context of the film refers to the older meaning of the word as a tracker and hunter of game or guide.
There are lots of mods to enhance both the graphics and gameplay of the game which lots of people recommend since they change a lot of game mechanics for the better, as well as new items such as weapons and armor; there are several really large mods like LURK mod which I recall is several GBs in size.

The newest S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game recently came out in the U.S. called S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat which is better than Clear Sky, but not as fun as Shadow of Chernobyl.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat also uses a much more optimized game engine capable of using DirectX11 graphics which also has several graphical improvements over the engine used in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is very similar to Fallout 3 in the sense that they're both open-world FPS+RPG hybrids with lots and lots of items and character customizeability; the difficulty level of Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky are both very high, I found even the easiest level of difficulty to prove much of a challenge to me during certain parts of the game. The worlds are very open and fun to explore, I find myself constantly wandering around without doing any specific mission. Parts of the game are really uhh... scary, it's the kind of game that causes you to be really tense and alert as you closely watch the screen and listen for any odd sounds. Nighttime isn't like many other open-world games out there, night is actually dark and forces you to rely on your flashlight in order to see just the few several meters in front of you. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games seem to have this really unique atmosphere that really immerses me into the game; it's probably a combination of the excellent lighting, sounds effects, locations, and enemies; everything in the game seems to fit together so well.

These games are all PC exclusive but generally have rather low system requirements (meaning if you likely have something other than an integrated video card, you can probably run this, assuming the ingame settings are on the lower end).

Any big fans of the game series here on Smogon?

There is a benchmark tool for Call of Pripyat that you can download here freely that will help you feel if you can run the game or not.

All three games are currently available on the STEAM store;
Shadow of Chernobyl: $19.99
Clear Sky: $9.99
Call of Pripyat: $29.99 ($19.99 if you already own a previous version on STEAM)

Here's a few screenshots of the game I took with horrible image compression:

I bought Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl on steam in October, I've spent about two hours playing the game but I just haven't been able to get into to it that much, mainly due to being taken back to the main menu after every death. It's rather disappointing that I can't get into it as I've heard that the game is good and quite unique. Reading this thread has encouraged me to give the game another go later on though.

Also, out of curiosity, what game is those screenshots taken from? I'm assuming Call of Pripyat @ DirectX11 as Shadow of Chernobyl looks poor even at 1920x1080 on maximum while those screenshot's visuals look pretty good.

Shadow of Chernobyl uses an earlier version of the X-RAY engine that only does DX9 and looks pretty poor compared to other recent games; there are many mods however, that increase the graphic quality much more than stock maximum.

If you want to get more out of SoC, try using this mod:

Differences between DX10, 10.1, and DX11 CoP are all pretty minimal, DX11 seems to run smoother and better than DX10 and 10.1. It also looks slightly better at the same time (but not by much).

Screenshots are from the DX11 version of CoP, all settings on maximum with 4xAA.

Also, the game becomes a lot easier (and better) after you pick up a good assault rifle. The beginning parts of the game are rather difficult, but if you can get through them, the game should be a lot more do-able. A lots of people find the first two games really difficult.

Stalker series definitely has some of my favorite video games ever, the atmosphere they create is incredible and no other game ever comes close. I also love the uniqueness of the AI, especially in CoP, where the AI interacts with one another even if you're not present at the location. There are a lot of wild stories that I've heard because of the possibilities created.

Nomad, the game is punishing at first but it is equally rewarding, keep playing the game, save often, remember to use cover, and use those iron sights. The game really picks up later on, and some areas (lolabs) are amazing. Those screenshots are from Call of Pripyat, and although vanilla SoC doesn't look too wall, there are a lot of mods that enhance both gameplay and graphics.

Some mods to try out for Shadow of Chernobyl are:

Oblivion Lost - One of my first mods, it adds some scrapped mutants and unscripted blowouts.

AMK - Adds a fuckload of guns and other enhancements, you need to use version 1.004 though so you need Hispano's version extractor or something.

L.U.R.K. - Wouldn't recommend it until you've got the hang of the game, makes the game look a lot prettier but things like the HUD are removed.

Complete 2009 - Another graphics mod with other goodies, looks excellent.

I wouldn't recommend playing the game with mods until you finish the vanilla game so you can get the full experience.

Anyway, closing with some CoP screenies. Please note these are DX10 almost fully maxed out except for draw distance. Silly jagged edges.

Get out of here, stalker.

I'm going to use Complete 2009 for my first runthrough as it seems to enhance the game visually. Still haven't got around to it. Too much to play before it!
