Sacrifice (UU War Story)

The title of this story was inspired by the fact that, IMHO, victory for both myself and my opponent depended upon one key member of each of our teams. Subsequently this battle became a real game of cat and mouse, with both sides sacrificing team members, in a vain attempt to ensure that their champion was in perfect position to secure victory ...

Just a quick note ... throughout the following battle I refer to my opposition simply as "opponent", as I forgot to ask whether they minded this being posted. Therefore, out of respect, I would rather not name them.

Oh and just in case it's not obvious enough for you, Not So Shiny Gloom..." is an alt of mine., my Shiny Oddish account had been "frozen" by disconnection at this particular juncture.

opponent switched in Mawile.

Mawile's intimidate cut Pinsir's attack!
Pinsir used X-Scissor.
It's not very effective... A critical hit! Mawile lost 36% of its health.
Mawile's leftovers restored its health a little!

As usual in the opening round I played safe. Unfortunately my opponent predicted accordingly and I was now locked into X-Scissor, as, for some reason, I was running a Choice Scarf set. Little did I realise that this would actually prove to be a blessing, because Pinsir was in fact my "key member", my success or failure resting squarely on its ugly shoulders.

Poor Mawile, its dancing did it little good, as it was rather embarrassingly out sped by its fellow Steel type, and promptly KO'd.

Carnivine used Stun Spore.
Noctowl is paralysed! It may be unable to move!

My scouting failed to pay off this time, my opponent predicting my switch to some sort of sleep-absorber ... still Noctowl has a "nice" little surprise for those pokemon that like to throw nasty status attacks at her ...

Carnivine used Return. Noctowl lost 50% of its health.
Noctowl used Psycho Shift. Carnivine is paralysed! It may be unable to move!

Not So Shiny Gloom switched in Pinsir.
Carnivine used Return.
Pinsir lost 43% of its health.

Well "Little Shop of Horrors" is paralysed, but two of my team have taken quite nasty hits. To be honest I switched Pinsir in expecting Carnivine would be recalled ...

X-Scissor again hoping that STAB would give my attack a little boost ...
sadly my opponent seemed to have an abundance of bug resists.

Not So Shiny Gloom switched in Hypno.
Muk used Curse. Muk's speed was lowered.
Muk's attack was raised. Muk's defence was raised.
Muk's Black Sludge restored a little health!

Some of you might be questioning why my team has yet another Insomniac special wall? In truth, it was a total accident. Despite many players considering Hypno to be one of UU's premier special walls, I personally don't rate it, and so rarely use it. However SkyPirateCoud had asked if anyone was willing to do some testing involving Skill Swap - which, for reasons that now escape me, this Hypno was carrying - so Mr. Burn's had been randomly added to this team for testing. Unfortunately whilst waiting for Coud to finish a battle I was challenged and in my giddy excitement at the prospect of a UU battle I forgot that it was still part of my team ... so Coud if you read this I hold you personally responsible for making me battle with Hypno.

Hypno used Psychic.
It's super effective! Muk lost 31% of its health.

It's super effective! Hypno lost 82% of its health.

Well because of Hypno's general suckiness, I was forced to sacrifice Probo. I knew that Muk couldn't OHKO it, which gave me a couple of shots and I was hoping to get lucky with a critical ... alas not.

Oh crap! Since this battle I've really come to fear Kangaskhan. It was at this point I came to the horrible realisation that Pinsir was the only thing standing between my team and complete annihilation ...
So the Hypno sacrifice was to allow Pinsir to switch in - although I must admit I enjoyed imagining Hypno being mauled by an angry Kangaskhan.

Good news: Noctowl is now back in decent health. Bad news: she's facing down Kangaskhan. Whilst in recent battles I have taken out almost entire teams with Noctowl (honestly, I have the logs to prove), I'm not going to bet on her winning this one ...

Looking back I'm not quite sure why I was so convinced that getting Stealth Rock into play was worth the Claydol sacrifice. Carnie really got screwed over by abilities there didn't he? Oh I used Crunch over your bog-standard Poison attack because I was expecting a switch to Rotom.

I could have left Pinsir in and hoped that it would KO Octillery, however with Kanga still running around I just couldn't risk. Noctowl could easily take at least one hit, and as it happens she took four, in the process weakening Octillery enough for Pinsir to easily rip it apart, leaving him primed to take down Kanga too ... phew!!!!

Yay to ...
* My opponent for one of my closest and most enjoyable battles in quite some time, and making me sit up and take notice of Kangaskhan's terrifying potential.
* Pinsir ... "KangaSlayer"
* Noctowl ... so underrated.

Boo to ...
* Hypno ... so overrated
* Seviper ... sadly she did not get to contribute that much.
* my rather strange decision regarding Claydol/Stealth Rock.

It's nice to know that I can finish on a relative high ... yes this is it folks, I'm out of the war-story business for good. (And I really mean it this time)

Thanks to everyone for all the kind comments and encouragement over the past few months ... I hoped these battles have at least encouraged people to consider using lower tier pokemon for their teams, if not giving UU a try.

Personally, I don't like the big sprites in mid-text. Maybe post the teams up top and use the little icons in mid text instead.

I do enjoy your UU warstories though. Another gg.

I really like your presentation -- keeping the team unknown until you read further gives a sense of actually being there in the fight. A pretty good read as well.

I enjoyed the warstory, but the pictures, while they may be aesthetically pleasing, made it a bit messy to read. Perhaps bold lettering? It's certainly easier to read. Great warstory though.

It's always nice to see a UU warstory from you, it's too bad you're pretty much the only person that makes them.

It was a gg, congrats.

Changed the format. If people don't like this ... well I'm afraid its tough, I'm not changing it again.

@ Galahad: UU players are still very much a minority. Add to that the fact that war stories are very time consuming (this took in excess of three hours), it is understandable why they are a rarity.

@Alienjesus: Whilst Pinsir's days in UU may indeed be numbered there have been no moves toward making any of the suggestions in the UU/BL discussion thread official. Therefore to the general masses Pinsir is still a UU pokemon. To be honest I rarely utilise it myself, it was just fortunate that in this instance that I was.

@Mekkah: to be fair I didn't actually include them mid-sentence, but point taken.

Thanks everyone.

Great warstory, and I didn't mind the pictures, but I have a question. When it was the Noctowl/Octillery battle, instead of continually Night Shading, why not Roost at least one more time? You'd recover enough health to survive more hits and you would take half as much damage as you were from Ice Beam during that turn. Just a thought.

I could have yes, but even if I had beaten Octillery with Noctowl, she still would have died to Kangaskhan anyways, so in the long run it wouldn't have made that much difference.

contrarily to most people here i found it to be quite boring and with little prediction on either side.

I'm sorry to have bored you ... perhaps you would like to post a warstory of your own and show me how its done, or link to a war-story that did you enjoy so I can see where I went wrong?

Another good warstory Shiney Oddish. UU battles are always interesting, and this one certainly lived up expectations. it's nice seeing unusual pokes battling.

Great read. At first I was slightly turned off by the format but it grew on me as I read through the story. The part when Pinser kills Rotom shows just how cool Mold Breaker is.

This has convinced me to actually start trying UU since I am becoming so bored of shoddy now most likely because it is the same old thing over and over.

Ah, too bad it wasn't decided to bring back Gligar for UU. Then we wouldn't be worrying about Pinsir's BL status.

I liked the use of Carnivine...I love those kinds of flytrapping pokemon. Maybe I'll make a lead Carnivine for another team.

It's too bad that at the end it doesn't have a full roster of the teams so that I can see all 6 at once. It's nice to have that reference when you want to look at the battle as a whole and evaluate the strategic decisions.

@mgoblue909: Formatting is incredibly tricky given everyone has such differing preferences ... I'm glad this one grew on you.

@Kira: Thanks - encouraging people to play UU is the only reason I post these things.

@Darkflagrence: I tend to use the pictures to break up what would otherwise be quite large blocks of text, so I tend not to include full team line-ups ... however the teams were

Not So Shiny Gloom/Shiny Oddish:

opponent
Carnivine - Mawile - Muk - Kangaskhan - Rotom - Octillery

Thanks everyone.

Great battle, like I'd expect from you. I really love the format as it shows that you put some thought into in instead of copying and pasting a log.

Nice story. It always bugs me that whenever I see a Mawile in a warstory it does nothing but suck and die.

Still, I like seeing Probopass in action.

Ah, too bad it wasn't decided to bring back Gligar for UU. Then we wouldn't be worrying about Pinsir's BL status.
Gligar only counters Scarf variants. It most certainly does not counter the Swords Dance set.

Still, congrats Shiny Oddish on another interesting and enjoyable UU warstory, despite the fact that I frown upon any Pinsir usage. It just has too much power and attack options even without an attack boost, as this particular battle demonstrated.

This reminds me off my Pinsir that I used in my OU team. I'd BP an Agility to it from Scizor if I could and lay ruin to the other team. Mold Breaker comes in extraordinarily handy sometimes. I can't help but smile at all the people who forgot about Mold Breaker and decided to switch a Gengar into a Banded EQ.

Great warstory. I was planning to make an UU team before but this just incites me more. It's good to see Kanga and Pinsir shine.

It's about time I saw someone else use Probopass. Thanks for another great Warstory Shiny Oddish, UU is my favorite tier and I feel it deserves more attention.

Great UU War Story! I'm not at all ashamed to admit I was the "opponent" in the story (although looking back at the battle I made some embarassing mistakes >.<). First time I've read a war story about me! I have to say the Abilities on your team are exceedingly annoying for my team. Pinsir w/ Mold Breaker stopping the levitate on Rotom and Carnvine; Insomnia stopping any chance to Sleep Powder; Probopass with it's Magnet Pull trapping poor Mawile before it could Baton Pass, Even Seviper with the lucky Shed Skin. A fun battle anyway. I think I'm going to love the UU metagame.

My Yays!
-Shiny Oddish, for writing a good war story and for playing UU with me
-Kangaskhan, for taking out 4 opposing Pokemon -- she's been an UU favorite of mine since RBY
-Carnvine, for being a freaky Plant
-UU tier, it rocks

My Boos!
-Mawile, for somehow being out sped by Probopass
-Octillary, for taking 5 turns to kill Noctowl and never getting a critical hit that would have ended it much sooner (Scope Lens + Sniper + Focus Energy)
-Pinsir, for being way too good!
-Noctowl, for being an annoying, status absorbing Bird.

On the subject of Pinsir in UU: I feel it needs more testing, but Pinsir has gotten some really nice boosts this gen and it was already top UU in previous gens. Definitely one to keep an eye on -- it may prove to be too powerful for the UU metagame.
