Format Discussion Scarlet/Violet Random Doubles Battle Sets

Should offensive protect koraidon get collision course instead of close combat? Is the extra power worth the drawback of dying faster, especially on a mon that can protect? Or close combat works better because of protect?
Hello, Koraidon was previously as you said but the winratio was so bad that at some point we had to remove it for the more consistent choice band set. We do however believe that a life orb Koraidon set with protect should exist, thus why we are using close combact on it hoping that more damage into neutral stuff can lead to better winrate stats. It doesn't seem so bad to us but we are still on testing grounds

Hello if we are talking about optimizing sets then I believe that tailwind should be far more common on the pokemon that get it, I just loaded a game with Shaymin that had no Tailwind and instead had Protect, Seed Flare, Earth Power, and Synthesis. Meanwhile my opponent had tailwind up and if I had a chance to match their tailwind I actually could’ve caught back up, but instead I just lost speed control the rest of the match and slowly lost the game

I think any good player will say that consistent value like tailwind is basically always better than things like Protect which relies on you predicting your opponent/getting lucky. Protect is also basically useless on Shaymin normal, its special attack is so low anyways and it’s hard to oneshot so its never a priority target.

You’re correct that Tailwind would be better on Shaymin here, but you are vastly underestimating Protect. It is hands down the best move in double battles, and relying on “predicting your opponent” is not a hindrance but a boon.

I’ll throw a suggestion out to force Tailwind and roll Synthesis/Protect

edit: I cannot read, we’ll also talk about forcing Tailwind on more things

A few thoughts I have strong opinions on

-Take Magnet Pull off of Magnezone in favor of Analytic and/or Sturdy. Magnet Pull is a really weird thing to roll in Doubles and doesn't tend to help Magnezone do very much in most matchups, most Steels don't tend to be the best natural pivots anyway, offensively Magnezone's matchups into Steels aside from Empoleon / Skarm / Corv is suspect at best, and overall super specific and sharp hard counters like Magnet Pull are really awkward to utilize. Analytic is broadly the better of the two abilities, as catching switches with additional damage is nice and the extra damage as Electrowebs are used can also help, but Sturdy can really help in a pinch on a mon with a glaring 4x weakness and an option for Speed Control. As it stands Magnezone's ability is a dead slot in 80% of games.

-Take Boots out of the metagame entirely. I can count on one hand the number of times I've been thankful to have Heavy Duty Boots on a Pokemon in this format. While Boots does end up a very dramatic savior to the worst matchups, it's dramatically outperformed by Sitrus Berry on 2* weak mons and still not especially useful on 4* weak ones. Their presence feels like a vestigial holdover from DOU basically, hazards are not particularly common in this format and covering for them feels like if Lum Berry became more common for whatever reason.

-Paralysis is kind of a lot in this format. A lot of Pokemon in this Pokemon have the gameplay role of spreading copious amounts of Paralysis and lots of Pokemon get really high value by being nightmares to switch around because Paralysis spam is so strong and hard to handle, especially when the Pokemon in question have other demanding qualities to handle like potential access to alternate disruption / Speed control tools like Encore, Knock Off, and Icy Wind or ways to accelerate gamestates with Setup Moves on alternate sets. I think it's worth looking at some of the Thunder Wave users to see what other tools they could use.

-Get rid of the conflicting Weathers / Terrains flags for team generation. Maybe this thought ends up unpopular but the extent to which the currently existing Weather / Terrain setters actually get in the way of one another are pretty low aside from Solar Beam on the Drought mons so long as the two don't generate as a leading pair.

-Let Wallbreaker Zebstrika roll Sap Sipper, I kinda don't get why that can't happen.

-I'd love for Delphox to be able to roll an itemless set w/ Magician, or perhaps something with Overheat + White Herb if there is a need. Stealing items is really strong
