[OVERVIEW]

Ever since the introduction of Scizor in generation 2, Scyther has been living in the shadows ofof its evolution Scizor.evolution. In generation 3,generations since, Scyther was still outclassed due tohas been penalized first by its lack of bulk. Generation 4 blessed Scyther with Technician but even this did not get Scyther banned to BL asbulk and then by the introduction of Stealth Rock made it difficult for it to switch in due to riskingRock, which stripped away half of its health. Generationhealth just for entering the battlefield. Even the blessing of Technician went mostly unnoticed. However, while Generation 5 did not bring Scizor anything andof value, it blessed Scyther with the Eviolite.

With this new item, Scyther has better defencesbetter defenses than Scizor.its evolution. Despite this, Scyther is still relegated to UU due to itsits worse typing, double weakness to Rock allowing Stealth Rock to take away half of its HP, lack of a powerful coverage move or STAB priority move, lack of STAB priority, and the need to rely on the Eviolite to be defensive.defensive—not to mention that it still loses half of its health when switching in to Stealth Rock. Despite all these flaws, with aits base 110 Attack, base 105 Speed, the Technician ability,Technician, and the Eviolite,Eviolite allow Scyther can preformto perform many different sweeping roles makingroles, making it a viable choice onin UU.

[Set]
name: Bulky Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Roost
move 3: Aerial Ace
move 4: Baton Pass / Brick Break
item: Eviolite
ability: Technician
nature: Jolly
evs: 224 HP / 32 Atk / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

The Eviolite blessesWhile most sweeping sets attempt to boost a maximized attack to astronomical levels, with the goal of overpowering opponents after one turn of setup, this set plays a bit differently. The goal here is to get multiple boosts. Eviolite, along with the HP investment, makes Scyther quite hard to bring down. This allows Scyther to boost multiple times, after which you can use Roost to recover health. Aerial Ace is the main STAB move, and gets a boost in power, thanks to Technician. With its bulk, Scyther can use Baton Pass quite effectively. The idea is to switch in on something that does not threaten it much, such as Gallade, and then set up.

Eviolite gives Scyther 294 [COMMENT: Scyther has 196 with271 defences therefore0 EVs and without Eviolite; 1.5 * 196 = 294] in both defenses, making it quite vital to this set making losing it a big problem.set. With the followinggiven EV spread, Scyther's HP hits 337 for(one more than a multiple of 16)—a magic HP number (if subtracted by 1,HP number, it is divisible by 16) which allows it toScyther to survive 2two switches into Stealth Rock as well as hang on by 1 HP to passiveand/or an extra turn of weather damage. MaxMaximum Speed of 339 is mandatory [COMMENT: is it? Note what you tie and/or outrun to show why. For instance, is outrunning Jolly Staraptor that useful here? How much does Brave Brid do? Would outrunning Staraptor let the set work, or would it just let Scyther get off a single SD? Does it let Scyther get off an extra SD?] and the rest of the EVs areare dumped into attackattack, which reaches 528 after a Swords Dance. Recovery through Roost is a bit of an obvious choice. Aerial Ace is the main STAB that gets a boost thanksallows it to Technician. With its bulk, Scyther can be use Baton Pass quite efficiently. The idea is to switch on something that does not threaten Scyther that much such as Galladesurvive longer and then set up.
perhaps get an extra boost.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Brick Break can be used in place of Baton Pass forcoveragecoverage, and has a handy side effect of breaking screens. Watch out for Rotom, Rotom-S, and ZapadosZapados, as they all resist both Aerial Ace and Brick Break. Scyther also hates losing itsTrick, as Eviolite as it is the only thing makingthat makes it moderately bulky. Despite being bulky, its bulk, Rapid Spin support is greatly appreciated to get rid of Stealth Rock. As forFor a recipient of Baton Pass, Rhyperior is a great choicechoice, as it and Scyther shareshares almost perfect synergy bar Ice.
with Scyther, save for a shared Ice weakness.

You could use Bug Bite for an additional or different STAB move; however this provides lesscoverage becoming only a hindrance.coverage, making it less effective. Substitute can be used to block statusstatus, but Scyther loses either coverage or recovery this way. You could putmove some of the EVs into Scyther's defencesthe defenses, but you would lose vital speed or end up losing on Roost recovery and vital speed. Being subjectedmore vulnerable to passive damage. Taunt orand Encore ruinsboth ruin this set.

[Set]
name: Swords Dance Sweeper
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Aerial Ace
move 3: Brick Break
move 4: Bug Bite / Quick Attack
item: Life Orb
ability: Technician
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

The classics, they just cannot be let go of as they will never get old. ScytherA classic set—Scyther is still a great sweepersweeper, even without bulkbulk, and is quite powerful when equipped with a Life Orb. TheThe EV spread is obvious, max out Attackattempts to hit quickly and powerfully by maximizing Speed and Speed.Attack. Jolly nature works well with Swords Dance, boasting 339 Speed and 319 Attack (which hits 638 after a Swords Dance) allowing Scyther to hit extremely hard. Aerial Ace is the main attack and is a reliable STAB movemove, while Brick Break hasprovides good coverage. Bug Bite provides another STAB.
powerful STAB attack.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Quick Attack is a viable optionwith itsfor a priority move, and hits hard after a Swords Dance. Entry hazard support is appreciated for securing KOs, and the ridding of Stealth Rock on your side of the field prevents Scyther from losing its HP faster.being crippled on the switch-in. Donphan and Hitmontop are the two partners that stand out the most for Rapid Spin supportsupport, as they bothboth have resistances to most of Scyther's weaknesses [COMMENT: um, what? They both can deal with Rock-types, and Donphan can deal with Electric-types, but Donphan is weak to Ice, Hitmontop to Flying, and neither take special Fire attacks all that well] and are good at dealing with its counters. You should always make sure that Scyther's HP is odd forso that it can survive two switches into Stealth Rock andRock. [COMMENT: Life Orb recoil.recoil is minimized if HP is one less than a multiple of ten. Uninvested, Scyther has 281 HP; minimizing LO Recoil would mean putting 32 EVs into HP to get 289. This takes away from the potency of the set, so it's probably inferior.] Roost can be used to heal off Life Orb recoilrecoil, but coverage is not preferred in this situation.

[Set]
name: Choice Attacker
move 1: U-turn
move 2: Aerial Ace
move 3: Brick Break / Pursuit
move 4: Quick Attack
item: Choice Band / Choice Scarf
ability: Technician
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

As a utility Pokemon or late-game sweeper, Scyther is viable with a choiceset is viable. Theitem. A Choice Band is used tomakes it hit extremely hard whileoff the bat, while a Choice Scarf isallows Scyther to pick off remaining damage.weakened foes. U-turn is an obvious choice as it providesa fantastic scouting move, providing a reliable stab andSTAB attack with the ability to switch out as well. That said, Rapid Spin support is mandatory and again, Donphan is aout. Aerial Ace provides another solid choice as it is resistant to all of Scyther's weaknesses (bar Fire and Ice)STAB attacks, while Brick Break hits hard Steel- and Rock-types. Quick Attack has access to Ice Shardpriority, which can deal with other troublesome sweepers (Staraptor in particular). The EV spreadbe crucial to stopping an opposing sweeper. [COMMENT: How useful is obvious and Jolly nature is preferable in all cases as it makes Scyther faster than a Jolly Staraptor.
Quick Attack for the Scarf set? What would you need priority for that the Scarf can't outrun by itself? Maybe it's more useful to note that QA works best with CB to hit hard even when you can't go first.] Pursuit can be used over Brick Break to hit hard Pokemon attempting to switch out.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Again, Aerial Ace providesWithout the ability to change moves, the freedom to switch in multiple times is essential. Thus, Rapid Spin support is mandatory and extra STAB, Brick Break hits Steel types, again, Donphan is a solid choice, as it deals with Rock- and Quick Attack hits hardElectric-type attacks well [COMMENT: alongside Fire and Ice, it also does not resist Flying] and has priority. Pursuit can be used over Brick Breakaccess to hit those on the switch. Like most sweepers, entry hazard supportIce Shard to deal with other troublesome sweepers—Staraptor in particular. The EV spread provides maximum Speed and Attack, and Jolly is appreciated.preferable in all cases, as it makes Scyther faster than Jolly Staraptor. With a Choice Band, Scyther hits 478 Attack and 339 Speed. With a Choice Scarf, Scyther hits 319 Attack and 508 Speed.
Speed. Entry hazard support is appreciated, as it makes the opponent's switches more costly.

[Other Options]

Scyther has many viable options to choosefromfrom, but they are usually outclassed. [COMMENT: I'm not sure how useful it is to put Rock Smash has a base power of 60even in OO. It does work well with Technician and has a 50% chance of lowering Defence (which works well alongside Pursuit's ability to catch switches)Pursuit, but Brick Break's ability to smash screens makes it better option.the only set with Pursuit is the set in which you cannot change moves! You can put the sentence back if you really want, but I don't think it's even worth saying.] Pursuit can be used in tandem with Brick Break for almost perfect coveragecoverage, but itthis is not recommendedrecommended, as Scyther does not like losing out on a STAB. Technician boostedSTAB attack. Technician-boosted Double Hit can break through Focus Sash, Sturdy, Substituteand Substitute, but it lacks coverage and priority.priority, making it very situational. Night Slash might have more power than PursuitPursuit, but Pursuit is preferred for its ability to catchpunish switches. Agility can be used to boost Scyther's already stellar SpeedSpeed, but itScyther prefers the Attack boost.boost granted from Swords Dance. Using Agility and Swords Dance is antogether requires too much setup time, and makes Scyther's four moveslot syndrome even worse idea as it is easier for the foe to set up on Scyther and it suffers from move slot syndrome.worse. A set utilizing a Focus Sash, Reversal, and Swords Dance is quite powerful howeverpowerful; however, with commonthe abundance of weather, Stealth Rock, and priority, it is not such a good idea. An Adamant nature can be used to boost Scyther's AttackAttack, but it prefers Jolly due to the demand of in Speed this generation.

[Checks and Counters]

Like before, withWith a double Rock weakness, Stealth Rock will take away half of Scyther's health. That said, Rock type moves in general usually knockoutknock out Scyther in one hit. Locking Scyther into Swords Dance through Encore or Trick can easily shut it down easilydown, but be careful of giving the Swords Dance Sweeper variety a Choice Scarf because itScarf—it can then preformperform like the Choice set.

As for certain Pokémon in general,For specific Pokemon, Cofagrigus is an obvious choice as it has amazing physicalPhysical bulk, access to Will-O-Wisp, and the Mummy ability Mummy, all shutting Scyther down.of which can shut down Scyther. Rotom, Rotom-S, ZapadosZapdos, and even Emolga resist Fighting, Flying, and Bug movesmoves, and they are allcan hit Scyther with STAB Electric types making them obvious choices.moves. Raikou and Jolteon are another pair ofcan outrun Scyther and also take it out with STAB Electric types that are faster than Scyther.attacks. It should be noted that event Rash Raikou with 252 Speed EVs and 31 Speed IVs areis still slower than Jolly Scyther with 252 Speed EVs and 31 Speed IVs.EVs. Sharpedo is another counter as aftercounter—after using Protect, it is faster than ScytherScyther, thanks to its ability Speed Boost ability.
Boost.
