PU Scyther [QC: 3/3] [GP: 2/2]

[OVERVIEW]

Scyther has a potent combination of great offensive presence and substantial defensive utility with usable bulk and access to Roost. Its Bug / Flying typing lets it heavily pressure relevant threats like Mesprit, Gurdurr, and Lilligant as well as take on powerful Fighting- and Grass-type attacks from Pokemon like Primeape and Alolan Exeggutor. Scyther is also quite flexible with items; it can run Eviolite to augment its bulk and function as a potent bulky setup sweeper, Choice Scarf to act as a great revenge killer that can punish premier weather threats like Ludicolo, Alolan Sandslash, and Victreebel, and Choice Band to function as a powerful wallbreaker that is efficient at pressuring certain switch-ins like Togedemaru and Oricorio-E. Scyther's great Speed and excellent offensive presence make it a top-notch way to generate momentum for offensive teams with its strong and quick U-turn. However, despite Scyther's strong typing, it is plagued by a severe Stealth Rock weakness that limits its ability in play, although bulky Swords Dance sets with Roost can slightly mitigate this. This same 4x weakness causes it to have difficulty dealing with the prominent Rock-types in the tier, including Regirock, Aggron, and Lycanroc. It also renders Scyther inconsistent in checking many of those same Fighting-type Pokemon it regularly pressures, as well as other Pokemon like Lilligant that can run Rock-type coverage to threaten it. Scyther's other weaknesses include Ice and Electric, leaving it vulnerable to faster Pokemon like Froslass and Choice Scarf Togedemaru. Despite its offensive prowess, Scyther's inability to blast through Pokemon in the way that Aggron and Aurorus can often leaves it reliant on support to deal with physical walls like the aforementioned Regirock, Sableye, Pyukumuku, and Weezing. Regardless, Scyther's offensive and defensive capabilities combined with its good item flexibility give it all the tools it needs to be a potent team player in the PU metagame.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Swords Dance gradually increases Scyther's threat level by boosting its Attack two stages, allowing it to use its bulk to take advantage of and break through bulky Pokemon such as Tangela, Gurdurr, and Clefairy. Roost lets Scyther stay healthy throughout the match, which allows it to mitigate its Stealth Rock weakness and liberally check Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Lurantis. Roost temporarily removing Scyther's Flying typing also helps it safely recover against coverage options from Pokemon like Hitmonchan. U-turn applies great offensive pressure while allowing Scyther to pivot out of and weaken checks such as Regirock, Weezing, and Mudsdale so that it can sweep more easily late-game. Aerial Ace is Scyther'sstrongest cleaning tool with the best neutral coverage. Its coverage is also great for threatening Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and opposing Scyther. Brick Break can work for hitting Aggron and Alolan Sandslash if Scyther wants stronger coverage overall at the cost of sacrificing U-turn's utility.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed investment with a Jolly nature is crucial to make sure Scyther fast as possible, allowing it to threaten notable Pokemon such as Jynx and Lilligant before they can retaliate. 248 HP EVs let Scyther maximize its health to give it as much mixed bulk as possible while also ensuring that it can switch into Stealth Rock at least twice. Eviolite further bolsters Scyther's defenses, allowing it to pivot into Pokemon like Hitmonchan and Mesprit more comfortably and set up or heal against them. Technician boosts the Base Power of Scyther's main attacking move, Aerial Ace, to a high 90.

Usage Tips
========

This set uses its bulk to switch into Pokemon that struggle to threaten it like Clefairy, Tangela, and defensive Mesprit and either sets up or pivots out appropriately. Scyther can act as a Fighting-type check that can pivot into and either heal up against or threaten Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and Primeape, but it must be wary of coverage moves like Stone Edge that can often take it out with prediction. Otherwise, Scyther should dedicate its early- to mid-game presence to weakening checks like Regirock, Mudsdale and Togedemaru with U-turn and keeping up momentum for its team before attempting a sweep. Setting up Swords Dance does not have to be purely for sweeping, as weakening checks early-game can work if they aren't brought in initially, but this is often situational. It is also useful for breaking through bulky Pokemon such as Altaria. Scyther can use its Speed to pick off weakened Pokemon like Haunter, Kangaskhan, and Jynx. Scyther should avoid switching into Stealth Rock, as the 50% damage can often force situations where it must use Roost initially as opposed to setting up, which could cost momentum. Preserving Scyther's health with Roost is always key for always keeping it above the range of Stealth Rock damage and staying healthy. This also gives it longevity for checking Grass- and Fighting-type Pokemon, sheds its Flying typing to scout for moves like Lanturn's Volt Switch and Hitmonchan's Thunder Punch, dodges Sucker Punch from users like Absol, and takes advantage of Pokemon that can't do any significant damage such as Lurantis and Skuntank. Scyther should avoid status ailments whenever possible, and thus it must be wary when being used to take advantage of Pokemon like Poliwrath and Gourgeist-XL, as they often have options for crippling it in a way that severely hinders its effectiveness throughout the match.

Team Options
========

Swords Dance Scyther operates well on offensive and balanced teams that appreciate its ability to not only check threats but also function as a proactive pivot and late-game sweeper. Defoggers such as Silvally-Water and -Dragon can pressure Scyther's defensive checks like Regirock, defensive Carracosta, and Mudsdale and appreciate Scyther's ability to take advantage of Pokemon like Lurantis, Hitmonchan, and Clefairy. They also offer Parting Shot for momentum and ease in setting up. Rapid Spin support, while not as optimal as Defog, can be used instead to preserve any entry hazards set by Scyther's team. Hitmonchan and Choice Scarf Kabutops have good synergy with Scyther, threatening Pokemon such as Regirock and Aggron. Scyther can form strong pivoting cores with a lot of Pokemon, ideally Pokemon such as Lanturn and Eelektross that add pressure to Pokemon like Qwilfish, Regirock, and Mudsdale. Lanturn also baits in Grass-types, while Eelektross invites in Hitmonchan for Scyther to pressure. Fighting-types like Gurdurr and Hitmonchan are good at pressuring Rock- and Steel-types like Aggron, Lycanroc, and Togedemaru, while Primeape forms a pivoting core and can capitalize on Qwilfish's Intimidate. Wallbreakers like Aggron and Aurorus can punish the defensive teams that Scyther needs support to break through while appreciating Scyther bringing them in safely with U-turn. Power-Up Punch Kangaskhan with Fightinium Z is a notable option for luring Regirock. Hazard support, while difficult to accommodate for while also keeping hazards off your side of the field, can be helpful in taking advantage of the switches that Scyther can force early- to mid-game. Froslass and Qwilfish can apply pressure to defensive teams with Taunt to force switches and have access to Spikes to rack up chip damage.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: U-turn
move 2: Aerial Ace
move 3: Brick Break
move 4: Knock Off / Bug Bite / Toxic
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Technician
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

U-turn is Scyther's primary Bug-type STAB attack and fast pivoting option that works well in forcing out Pokemon like Lilligant and Jynx. Aerial Ace is Scyther's strongest and most reliable Flying-type STAB move with great neutral coverage that allows it to clean efficiently, and it deals solid damage to opposing Scyther and Fighting-types like Hitmonchan. Brick Break lets Scyther revenge kill Alolan Sandslash under hail thanks to Choice Scarf and is otherwise great for hitting Togedemaru and non-Chople Berry Aggron and Probopass. It can also also OHKO Aurorus and hit Omastar harder. Knock Off can cripple defensive switch-ins like Altaria by removing their items. Bug Bite is a strong STAB move that doesn't force Scyther out and can 2HKO defensive Mesprit and Assault Vest Lanturn. Toxic can cripple predicted defensive switch-ins like Regirock, Sableye, Pyukumuku, and Mudsdale, which all typically mind being badly poisoned more than losing their item.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed investment with a Jolly nature and Choice Scarf lets Scyther outspeed nearly every other Choice Scarf user save other Scyther and Manectric. Scyther can also outspeed potent weather sweepers like Ludicolo, Alolan Sandslash, and Victreebel as well as other setup sweepers such as +1 Lilligant, +2 Omastar, and +1 Jynx. The remaining EVs go to Attack to maximize Scyther's offensive presence. Technician is integral in boosting the Base Power of Aerial Ace and Bug Bite.

Usage Tips
========

Scyther should mostly pivot with U-turn early-game to gain momentum, chip away at its switch-ins, and safely bring in teammates that can threaten them. Knock Off and Toxic can be good for crippling defensive checks early-game; one must be cautious about locking into Toxic, however, as it can be a major momentum drain if the opponent switches to Weezing, Qwilfish, or Aggron. Although Scyther can pivot into resisted hits from foes like Lilligant and Hitmonchan, it lacks the bulk required to take repeated or neutral hits, meaning that it should only do so if necessary. As a Choice Scarf user, Scyther outspeeds the vast majority of the metagame, including weather threats like Alolan Sandslash, Ludicolo, and Victreebel, and it can be dependable in revenge killing virtually any weakened offensive Pokemon. Be careful about using Aerial Ace and Bug Bite with healthy defensive checks on the field, as the loss in momentum can be disadvantageous. Once they're weakened or removed, Scyther will be able to use these moves more liberally to pressure the opposing team.

Team Options
========

Defog support is critical for keeping Scyther healthy, as it is often pivoting with U-turn. Lurantis is amazing at pressuring standard checks like Mudsdale, Sableye, and Regirock while threatening bulky teams with its Contrary-boosted attacks. Skuntank can pressure bulky Ghost-types and weaken offensive threats like Stoutland and Togedemaru with Sucker Punch and Aftermath for Scyther to pick them off later. Entry hazard support can pressure switch-ins more effectively, with Regirock appreciating Scyther presence for checking Grass- and Fighting-types like Lilligant and Hitmonchan. Qwilfish and Froslass can set Spikes and have the option of preventing opposing hazards and pressuring defensive Pokemonwith recovery like Pyukumuku thanks to Taunt. Pokemon such as Aurorus, Alolan Exeggutor, and Drampa are all extremely powerful special wallbreakers that can heavily damage physically bulky checks to Scyther and enjoy the momentum that Scyther gives to bring them in safely. Aggron is also relatively strong at wearing down Scyther's checks, especially considering how often mutual checks like Mudsdale are forced in to check it. Fighting-types such as Gurdurr, Hitmonchan, and Assault Vest Crabominable offer great synergy, as they can break through and defensively check Rock- and Steel-types like Aurorus, Lycanroc, Aggron, and Alolan Sandslash to varying levels. More sources of momentum for a strong pivoting core include Lanturn and Eelektross, both of which can pressure Qwilfish, defensive Carracosta, and Mudsdale. Primeape can threaten Rock- and Steel-types and is a Fighting-type that can break through Qwilfish thanks to Defiant.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: U-turn
move 2: Aerial Ace
move 3: Brick Break
move 4: Knock Off / Pursuit
item: Choice Band
ability: Technician
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Scyther's Choice Band-boosted U-turn is a strong option for providing momentum for teammates and weakening checks and can force out Pokemon weak to Bug like Mesprit, Shiftry, and Bellossom. Aerial Ace is a secondary STAB attack with good neutral coverage that does not force Scyther out and heavily punishes Fighting-, Bug-, and Grass-types like Poliwrath, Pinsir, and Lurantis. Brick Break rounds out Scyther's coverage, OHKOing Togedemaru, Probopass, and Aggron after Stealth Rock damage. Knock Off reduces the longevity of bulky Pokemon by removingtheir items, which is great for crippling switch-ins like Regirock, Mudsdale, and defensive Carracosta. Pursuit traps and heavily damages Ghost- and Psychic-types like Mesprit and Haunter and is adept at picking off a weakened bulky Oricorio-G.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack investment combined with Choice Band maximizes Scyther's immediate power, which works well with U-turn in chipping switch-ins. Speed investment is maximized to outspeed as many foes as possible and to Speed tie opposing Scyther and Manectric. Technician is the best option for powering up Aerial Ace and boosting the power of Pursuit when the foe stays in.

Usage Tips
========

Scyther should prioritize a hit-and-run strategy with powerful U-turns to weaken checks like Sableye and Qwilfish early- to mid-game. While Scyther shouldn't be too aggressive when switching into what it checks due to its lacking longevity, it is decent for pivoting into the resisted hits from offensive threats like Gurdurr, Bellossom, and Primeape. It can also pivot into defensive threats like Mesprit and Clefairy but must be wary of Thunder Wave. Scyther can and should make use of its high Speed to revenge kill threats like Swanna and Aurorus. Scyther can use Pursuit when predicting a switch and when the Pokemon is threatened by Scyther such as non-Choice Scarf Haunter and Jynx. Choice Band Scyther can be especially potent in situations where its set is not yet revealed. Given that Steel-types are common initial switch-ins to Scyther, predicting targets like Aggron and Alolan Sandslash to switch in and breaking through them with Brick Break can be great for enabling Scyther to wallbreak or sweep with Aerial Ace later. Do note, however, that the damage output of this set can reveal Scyther's set earlier than intended.

Team Options
========

Entry hazard removal support, preferably from Defoggers like Silvally-Water, Altaria, and Lurantis, is optimal to keep Scyther healthy once it comes in on the field. They all also have alternate ways of supporting Scyther: Silvally-Water and Lurantis heavily pressure bulky Rock-types and Mudsdale, Silvally-Water can pivot alongside Scyther with Parting Shot, and Lurantis can better break through physically defensive Pokemon with Contrary Leaf Storm. Altaria can absorb status ailments that Scyther likes to avoid thanks to Natural Cure and is great for wearing down opposing physically defensive Pokemon like Regirock and Mudsdale with Toxic. Spinners are an alternate form of hazard control, with a Pokemon like Kabutops being a good option, as it can also pressure Rock- and Steel-types. Volt Switch and U-turn users that offer good synergy and are good at pressuring Scyther's defensive checks work solidly, with Lanturn and Eelektross being prime candidates for pressuring the likes of Weezing and Regirock. Fighting-types like Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and Primeape can break through the defensive Rock- and Steel-types that Scyther can struggle against, and they all work for checking offensive checks like Kabutops and Lycanroc. Hitmonchan can also act as a secondary form of hazard control, Gurdurr can function as a bulky sweeper that absorbs status and is the best defensive switch-in to these Rock-types, and Primeape can form a solid offensive pivoting core with Scyther. Late-game cleaners that appreciate Choice Band Scyther's large damage output include Lilligant, Lycanroc, and Combusken, as Scyther is great for breaking through Pokemon like Clefairy, Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and Qwilfish that can otherwise stop their sweep. Pokemon that can appreciate foes like Ghost-types and Jynx being trapped include the aforementioned Lilligant, as well as Pokemon like Mesprit and Oricorio-G. Secondary wallbreakers that can break through physically defensive checks better and appreciate gaining momentum like Aurorus, Haunter, and Drampa also pair well with Scyther.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Minor deviations of the Swords Dance set include a fully offensive spread with Eviolite, which comes at the cost of some bulk. Similarly, offensive Swords Dance sets with Buginium Z or Fightinium Z can potentially do a fair job of breaking through traditional defensive checks like Mudsdale, Carracosta, and Regirock, but such sets forgo a lot of Scyther's defensive utility and can't really fit Roost without sacrifice coverage, limiting their breaking potential. Technician-boosted Quick Attack offers Scyther a strong priority option for picking off faster threats like Floatzel and Choice Scarf Primeape, but these threats are already outsped by Choice Scarf sets, and Quick Attack offers less utility than moves like Knock Off otherwise. Tailwind is a niche utility move that Scyther can use to speed up its teammates for a few turns but is very situational and is otherwise outclassed by Scyther's other utility options.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Stealth Rock**: Scyther's 4x weakness to Rock means that it loses half of its HP when switching in with Stealth Rock on the field, greatly reducing its effectiveness and often putting it in a position where it would be forced to Roost to stay healthy.

**Rock-types**: Bulky Rock-types such as Regirock, Aggron, and Carracosta have little issues comfortably taking Scyther's attacks barring the occasional Brick Break in Aggron's case, and they all scare it out with the threat of an OHKO with their STAB moves. More offensive variants include Pokemon like Lycanroc and Choice Scarf Kabutops, both of which can usually take a hit and force Scyther out. Omastar is a particularly notable mention, as defensive sets can easily sponge Scyther's hits and offensive sets can easily use Scyther as setup fodder in a one-on-one scenario.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon** Scyther has serious issues breaking past Pokemon such as Sableye, Weezing, and defensive Mudsdale, as they can all comfortably take its boosted and unboosted hits and retaliate with the appropriate status or coverage option such as Will-O-Wisp, Toxic, or Rock Slide. Pyukumuku comfortably walls Scyther regardless of the set and ignores any Swords Dance boosts thanks to Unaware while being able to stall it out in return with Toxic.

**Steel-types**: Pokemon such as Alolan Sandslash and Probopass are resilient to any attack aside from Brick Break and can threaten Scyther with their respective STAB attacks. Choice Scarf Togedemaru can outspeed Scyther and use its Electric-type STAB attacks to directly threaten it, but it much be wary of Choice variants of Scyther, as Choice Scarf sets can outspeed and threaten it with Brick Break. Togedemaru also does not switch in well against Choice Band Scyther, being potentially 2HKOed by U-turn with entry hazards up and OHKOed by Brick Break.

**Faster Pokemon**: Scyther is prone to being threatened by many offensive Pokemon such as Froslass and Alolan Raichu, all of which are naturally faster and can hit Scyther super effectively with their STAB options. Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Aurorus and Manectric are similarly problematic in that regard.

**Status**: Toxic puts Swords Dance Scyther on a timer, which limits its ability to stick around to set up in situations where it can remain on the field. Thunder Wave from Mesprit and Clefairy, two Pokemon that Scyther is good at taking advantage of, heavily cripples Scyther, as paralysis makes it much more susceptible to getting revenge killed. Burns also heavily cripple Scyther for obvious reasons, and Scyther must be wary of Pokemon like Poliwrath and Gourgeist-XL that it otherwise capitalizes on because of Scald and Will-O-Wisp. Neither Pokemon wants to directly switch into Scyther, though, as they are weak to Aerial Ace.

[OVERVIEW]

  • Scyther finds its place in the tier as a solid Pokemon with a potent combination of great offensive presence with its powerful Attack stat and Speed with substantial defensive utility.
  • Its unique Bug / Flying typing allows Scyther to utilize said offensive and defensive presence to heavily pressure relevant threats like Mesprit, Gurdurr, and Lilligant while taking on powerful Fighting- and Grass-type attacks from Pokemon like Primape (Primeape) and Exeggutor-Alola. Mention Roost since this point touches on its defensive potential.
  • Scyther is quite flexible when it comes to its use of items. It can run Eviolite to greatly augment its bulk and allow it to function as a potent bulky setup sweeper, Choice Scarf to function as a premier revenge killer that can even punish premier weather threats like Ludicolo, Alolan Sandlash (Sandslash), and Victreebel, and Choice Band to function as a powerful wallbreaker that is very effective at pressuring certain switch-ins like Togedemaru and Oricorio-E.
  • Thanks to its great Speed and strong offensive presence, Scyther is also noteworthy for being a top-notch player in generating momentum for offensive teams with its strong and quick U-turn.
  • Despite all of Scyther's advantages with its typing, it is unfortunately plagued by its severe Stealth Rock weakness that limits its ability in play.
  • This same 4x weakness leaves it quite disadvantageous in dealing with the many prominent Rock-types in the tier including Regirock, Aggron, and Lycanrock. In a similar vein, this weakness renders Scyther inconsistent in checking many of those same Fighting-type Pokemon it regularly pressures, as well as other Pokemon like Lilligant that can run Rock-type coverage to threaten it. Other weaknesses include Fire-, Ice-, and Electric-, where it is particularly prone to being pressured by faster Pokemon like Pyroar, Froslass and Choice Scarf Togedemaru.
  • Despite its offensive prowess, Scyther's lack of ability to nuke through Pokemon in the way that Aggron and Pyroar can often leave it requiring support to deal with physical walls like the aforementioned Regirock, Sableye, Pyukumuku, and Weezing.
  • Regardless, Scyther's offensive and defensive capabilities, combined with its good item flexibility gives it all the tools it needs to function as a very potent team player in the PU metagame.

  • Swords Dance gradually increases Scyther's threat level by boosting its attack two stages, allowing it to use its bulk to take advantage of and break through bulky Pokemon such as Tangela, Gurdurr, Spiritomb without Will-o-Wisp, and Clefairy.
  • U-Turn is Scyther’s bread and butter STAB option that applies great offensive pressure while allowing it pivot out of and weakening checks such as Regirock, Weezing, and Mudsdale so that it can sweep more easily in the late-game.
  • Aerial Ace is Scyther’s strongest cleaning tool due to being Scyther’s strongest STAB option as well as its Flying typing granting it the best neutral coverage. Its coverage is also great for threatening Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and opposing Scyther.
  • Roost is key to the nature of this set, letting it stay healthy throughout the match which allows it to mitigate its Stealth Rock weakness and liberally check Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Lurantis throughout the course of the match. Temporarily removing its Flying-typing helps it safely recover against coverage options from Pokemon like Hitmonchan, and can be an option for taking neutral damage from Lanturn's predicted Volt Switch. I'm not sure about mentioning Lanturn since it can also opt to Toxic or Scald, potentially crippling Scyther. Maybe mention another, similarly weak Ice-, Rock-, etc. coverage user
  • Brick Break

Set Details
========

  • Technician is the prime ability for this set as it boosts the power of Scyther's main attacking move, Aerial Ace, to a high 90 Base Power.
  • 248 HP EVs lets Scyther maximize its health to give it as much mixed bulk as possible, while also ensuring that it can switch into Stealth Rock at least twice.
  • Eviolite further bolsters Scyther's defenses, allowing it to more comfortably pivot into Pokemon like Hitmonchan and Mesprit and set up or heal against them.
  • Maximum Speed with a Jolly nature is crucial to make sure Scyther fast as possible, allowing it to threaten notable Pokemon such as Jynx and Lilligant before they can retaliate.
Usage Tips
========

  • Using Swords Dance Scyther involves making use of its bulk investment to switch into a variety of Pokemon that struggle to threaten it like Clefairy, Tangela, and defensive Mesprit, and either setting up or pivot out appropriately. The former two can throw off Toxics, and the latter Leech Seed, so I dunno about using those as examples.
  • Scyther can be used as a Fighting-type check that can pivot into and either threaten or heal up against all of Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and Primeape, but must be wary of possible coverage moves like Stone Edge as that can often take it out on a timely prediction. Gurdurr's Knock won't be killing you or anything but makes setting up and sticking around afterwards a bit harder.
  • Otherwise, Scyther should dedicate its early to mid-game presence to weakening checks like Regirock, Oricorio-E and Togedemaru with U-Turn and keep up momentum for its own team before attempting a sweep. Setting up Swords Dance does not have to be purely for sweeping, as weakening those checks early-game can work if they haven't been brought in initially, but this is often situational. It is also useful for breaking through bulky Pokemon such as Altaria.
  • Scyther should avoid switching into Stealth Rock as the 50% damage chip can often force situations where it has to Roost initially as opposed to setting up, which could lose momentum.
  • Preserving its health with Roost is always key for always keeping Scyther above the range of Stealth Rock damage and remaining healthy. This also gives it longevity for checking Grass- and Fight-type (Fighting-type) Pokemon, loses its Flying-typing to scout for moves like Lanturn's Volt Switch or Hitmonchan's Thunderpunch (Thunder Punch), dodging Sucker Punch from users like Absol, and Pokemon that can't do any significant damage such as Lurantis and Skuntank.
  • Scyther should avoid status ailments whenever possible, and thus must be wary when being used to take advantage of Pokemon like Poliwrath and Gourgeist-XL as they often have options for crippling it in a while that severely hinders its effectiveness throughout the match.
  • Can be used to revenge kill stuff like Kangaskhan, Haunter, and unboosted Lilligant.
Team Options
========

  • Swords Dance Scyther operates well on offensive and balanced teams that appreciate Scyther's ability to not only check threats but also function as a proactive pivot and late-game sweeper.
  • A reliable defogger or spinner (Hitmonchan, Kabu) foremost is optimal in allowing Scyther to function properly. Silvally-Water and Dragon are good at pressuring Scyther's defensive checks like Regirock, defensive Carracosta, and Mudsdale, and appreciate Scyther's ability in taking advantage of Pokemon like Lurantis, Hitmonchan, and Clefairy. They also offer Parting Shot for momentum and ease in setting up.
  • Scyther can form strong pivoting cores with a lot of Pokemon, ideally Pokemon such as Lanturn and Eelektross that add pressure to Pokemon like Qwilfish, Regirock, and Mudsdale. Lanturn also baits in Grass-types, while Eelektross invites in Hitmonchan for Scyther to pressure. Scyther checks Fighting-types for both.
  • Fighting-types like Gurdurr and Hitmonchan are good at pressuring Rock- and Steel-types like Aggron, Lycanroc and Togedemaru, while Primeape is an option for forming a pivoting core than can capitalize on Qwilfish's Intimidate
  • Wallbreakers like Aggron, Pyroar, and Aurorus are good options for punishing the defensive teams that Scyther requires support to break through, while appreciating Scyther itself bringing them in safely with U-Turn. Pyroar with Grassinium Z and Power-Up Punch Kangaskhan with Fightinium Z are notable options for luring Regirock.
  • Hazard support, while difficult to accommodate for while also keeping hazards off of its own field, can be advantageous in taking advantage of the switches that Scyther can force early to mid-game. Froslass and Qwilfish can apply pressure to defensives team with their use of Taunt to force switches and have access Spikes to rack up chip damage.

  • U-turn to chip away at Scyther's switch-ins and safely bring in teammates that can threaten them grabs momentum
  • Knock Off and Toxic can be good for crippling defensive checks early-game but need to be careful when using both, the latter especially, because they can be exploited by certain mons, like Z users
  • Although Scyther can pivot into resisted hits from mons like lilligant and chan, it can't switch in on as liberally due to the lack of eviolite
  • As a Scarfer Scyther outspeeds the vast majority of the metagame (including weather threats like alolan sandslash, ludicolo, and victreebel) and can be dependable in revenge killing virtually any weakened offensive pokemon. Be wary about potential Scarf variants of Pyroar, however.

  • Predicting Brick Break targets like Aggron or Toge can be great for spamming Aerial Ace later
  • Can use Pursuit when predicting a switch and when the Pokemon is directly threatened by Scyther such as Haunter and Jynx without a Scarf
Team Options
========

  • Entry hazard removal support, preferably defoggers
  • Volt Switch and U-turn users that offer good typing synergy and are good at pressuring Scyther's defensive checks
  • Fighting-types
  • Late game cleaners that appreciate Choice Band's large damage output on Pokemon that check them like Lilligant, Lycanroc, Combusken
  • Pokemon that can appreciate stuff like Ghosts and Jynx being trapped is cool and helps stuff like Mesprit and Oricorio-G
  • Secondary wallbreakers that can break through physically defensive checks better like Aurorus

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Offensive Swords Dance + Z-Moves (Bug, Fighting)
  • Quick Attack
  • Tailwind
  • Reversal Honestly not a big fan of this on paper, I'd like to see it removed but maybe wait for the rest of QC's take first before taking it off for good

Checks and Counters
===================

**Stealth Rock**: Scyther's 4x weakness to Rock means that it loses half of its HP when switching in with Stealth Rock on the field, greatly reducing its effectiveness and often puts it in a position where it would be forced to Roost to stay healthy.

**Rock-types**: Bulky Rock-types such as Regirock, Aggron, and Carracosta have little issues comfortably taking Scyther's attacks barring the occasional Brick Break in Aggron's case, and all scare it out with the threat of an OHKO with their STAB move. More offensive variants include Pokemon like Lycanroc and Choice Scarf Kabutops, both of whom can usually take a hit and force Scyther out. Omastar is a particularly notable mention as defensive sets can easily sponge Scyther's hits and offensive sets can easily use Scyther as setup fodder in a 1v1 scenario.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon** Scyther has serious issues breaking past Pokemon such as Sableye, Weezing, and defensive Mudsdale, as they can all comfortably take its boosted and unboosted hits and retaliate with the appropriate status or coverage option such as Will-o-Wisp, Toxic, or Rock Slide respectively. Pyukumuku comfortably walls Scyther regardless of the set and ignores any Swords Dance boosts thanks to Unaware while being able to stall it out in return with Toxic.

**Steel-types**: Pokemon such as Sandslash-Alola and Probopass are resilient to any attack aside from Brick Break and can threaten Scyther with their respective Ice- and Rock-type STAB. Choice Scarf Togedemaru can outspeed Scyther and use its Electric-type STAB to directly threaten it, but much be wary of Choice variants of Scyther as Scarf can outspeed and threaten it with Brick Break while Togedemaru does not switch in well against Choice Band, being potentially 2HKOd by U-turn with hazards up and can also run Brick Break.

**Faster Pokemon**: Scyther is prone to be threatened by many offensive Pokemon such as Pyroar, Froslass, and Alolan Raichu, all of which are naturally faster and can outright threaten Scyther with their STAB options. Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Aurorus and Manectric are similarly problematic in that regard.

**Status**: Toxic puts Swords Dance Scyther on a timer, which limits its ability to stick around to set up in situations where it can remain on the field. Thunder Wave from Mesprit and Clefairy, two Pokemon that Scyther is generally good at taking advantage of, heavily cripples Scyther as paralysis makes it much more susceptible to getting revenge killed. Burns also heavily cripple Scyther for obvious reasons, and Scyther has to be wary of Pokemon like Poliwrath and Gourgeist-XL that it capitalizes on as Scald and Will-o-Wisp are potential threats to its status.
Just remember to really expand on a lot of parts after this, 1/3.

[OVERVIEW]
  • Scyther finds its place in the tier as a solid Pokemon with a potent combination of great offensive presence with its powerful Attack stat and Speed with substantial defensive utility.
  • Its unique Bug / Flying typing allows Scyther to use said offensive and defensive presence to heavily pressure relevant threats like Mesprit, Gurdurr, and Lilligant while taking on powerful Fighting- and Grass-type attacks from Pokemon like Primeape and Exeggutor-Alola.
  • Scyther is quite flexible when it comes to its use of items. It can run Eviolite to greatly augment its bulk and allow it to function as a potent bulky setup sweeper, Choice Scarf to function as a premier revenge killer that can even punish premier weather threats like Ludicolo, Alolan Sandslash, and Victreebel, and Choice Band to function as a powerful wallbreaker that is very effective at pressuring certain switch-ins like Togedemaru and Oricorio-E.
(you should probably mention either here or at the point where you mention bulky sd sets that access to roost slightly mitigates this.)
  • This same 4x weakness leaves it quite disadvantageous in dealing with the many prominent Rock-types in the tier including Regirock, Aggron, and Lycanrock. (lycanroc) In a similar vein, this weakness renders Scyther inconsistent in checking many of those same Fighting-type Pokemon it regularly pressures, as well as other Pokemon like Lilligant that can run Rock-type coverage to threaten it. Other weaknesses include Fire-, Ice-, and Electric-, where it is particularly prone to being pressured by faster Pokemon like Pyroar, (rip) Froslass and Choice Scarf Togedemaru.
  • Despite its offensive prowess, Scyther's lack of ability to nuke through Pokemon in the way that Aggron and Pyroar (rip) can often leave it requiring support to deal with physical walls like the aforementioned Regirock, Sableye, Pyukumuku, and Weezing.
  • Regardless, Scyther's offensive and defensive capabilities, combined with its good item flexibility gives it all the tools it needs to function as a very potent team player in the PU metagame.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Swords Dance gradually increases Scyther's threat level by boosting its attack two stages, allowing it to use its bulk to take advantage of and break through bulky Pokemon such as Tangela, Gurdurr, Spiritomb without Will-o-Wisp, (can deal a hefty chunk with foul play after you sd and force you to use roost more often.) and Clefairy. (can carry toxic / knock off to hinder scyther, specify that you're setting up against calm mind variants lacking these moves.)
(why is roost mentioned fourth if it's the second move?)
  • Brick Break can work as an option for hitting Aggron and Alolan Sandslash. (downsides?)
Set Details
========
  • Eviolite further bolsters Scyther's defenses, allowing it to more comfortably pivot into Pokemon like (non-Stone Edge) Hitmonchan and Mesprit and set up or heal against them.
  • Maximum Speed with a Jolly nature is crucial to make sure Scyther fast as possible, allowing it to threaten notable Pokemon such as Jynx and Lilligant before they can retaliate.
  • The ordering of the points here feels wonky. Start with EVs, then the item, then the ability.
Usage Tips
========
  • Using Swords Dance Scyther involves making use of its bulk to switch into a variety of Pokemon that struggle to threaten it like Clefairy, Tangela, and defensive Mesprit, and either setting up or pivot out appropriately. (former two examples can run both knock off and some form of status that hinders scyther, though toxic is admittedly worse than sleep powder.)
  • Scyther can be used as a Fighting-type check that can pivot into and either threaten or heal up against all of Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and Primeape, but must be wary of possible coverage moves like Stone Edge as that can often take it out on a timely prediction.
  • Otherwise, Scyther should dedicate its early to mid-game presence to weakening checks like Regirock, Oricorio-E (has roost, so you're not really weakening this so much as pressuring it by forcing it to switch in.) and Togedemaru with U-Turn and keep up momentum for its own team before attempting a sweep. Setting up Swords Dance does not have to be purely for sweeping, as weakening those checks early-game can work if they haven't been brought in initially, but this is often situational. It is also useful for breaking through bulky Pokemon such as Altaria.
  • Scyther can use its Speed to pick off weakened Pokemon like Haunter, Kangaskhan, or Jynx.
This also gives it longevity for checking Grass- and Fighting-type Pokemon, loses its Flying-typing to scout for moves like Lanturn's Volt Switch or Hitmonchan's Thunder Punch, dodging Sucker Punch from users like Absol, and Pokemon that can't do any significant damage such as Lurantis and Skuntank.
  • Scyther should avoid status ailments whenever possible, and thus must be wary when being used to take advantage of Pokemon like Poliwrath and Gourgeist-XL as they often have options for crippling it in a while that severely hinders its effectiveness throughout the match.
Team Options
========
  • Swords Dance Scyther operates well on offensive and balanced teams that appreciate Scyther's ability to not only check threats but also function as a proactive pivot and late-game sweeper.
  • A reliable defogger foremost is optimal in allowing Scyther to function properly. (rapid spin users should also be mentioned, as they allow you to run your own hazards without losing out on wearing down the opposing team.)
  • Fighting-types like Gurdurr and Hitmonchan are good at pressuring Rock- and Steel-types like Aggron, Lycanroc and Togedemaru, while Primeape is an option for forming a pivoting core than can capitalize on Qwilfish's Intimidate
  • Wallbreakers like Aggron, Pyroar, (rip) and Aurorus are good options for punishing the defensive teams that Scyther requires support to break through, while appreciating Scyther itself bringing them in safely with U-Turn. Pyroar with Grassinium Z (rip) and Power-Up Punch Kangaskhan with Fightinium Z are notable options for luring Regirock.
  • Hazard support, while difficult to accommodate for while also keeping hazards off of its own field, can be advantageous in taking advantage of the switches that Scyther can force early to mid-game. Froslass and Qwilfish can apply pressure to defensives team with their use of Taunt to force switches and have access Spikes to rack up chip damage.

move 4: Knock Off / Bug Bite / Toxic

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • U-Turn for primary Bug-STAB and fast pivoting option that works well in forcing out Pokemon like Lilligant and Jynx.
  • Aerial Ace for strongest and most reliable Flying STAB with the best neutral coverage when checks are weakened, making it a great cleaning tool and deals solid damage to opposing Scyther and Fighting-types like Hitmonchan.
  • Brick Break can revenge kill Alolan Sandslash under Hail when equipped with Scarf, and is otherwise great for hitting (non-Chople Berry) Aggron, Probopass, and Togedemaru. (OHKOs aurorus w/o forcing you to switch and also deals super effective damage to omastar, which is notable given that you outspeed it at +2.)
  • Knock Off to cripple defensive switch-ins by removing items from Pokemon like Altaria.
  • Bug Bite for powerful stab that doesn't involve switching that can 2HKO defensive Mesprit and Assault Vest Lanturn.
  • Toxic can cripple predicted defensive switch-ins like Regirock, Sableye, Pyukumuku, and Mudsdale, which all typically mind being poisoned more than losing their item in most cases. (this doesn't feel really slash-worthy, though i do see the appeal. imo, it's just that you're better off just using u-turn against them in most cases and being locked into toxic is such a momentum sink.)
Set Details
========
  • Choice Scarf lets Scyther outspeed nearly every other Choice Scarf user save other Scyther, Pyroar, (rip) and Manectric, and even outspeeds potent weather abusers like Ludicolo, Alolan Sandslash, and Victreebel. (you also outspeed +1 lilligant, +2 omastar, +1 jynx, all of which are rather important.)
  • Max Speed with Jolly to be as fast as possible
  • Technician is integral in boosting the base power of important stab options in Aerial Ace and Bug Bite
  • Max Attack to maximize Scyther's offensive presence
Usage Tips
========
  • Pivot with U-turn to gain momentum chip away at Scyther's switch-ins and safely bring in teammates that can threaten them (make this point more about using u-turn for the majority of the early-game.)
  • Knock Off and Toxic can be good for crippling defensive checks early-game; one must be cautious about locking into Toxic, however, as it can be a major momentum drain if the opponent switches into Weezing, Qwilfish, or Aggron.
  • Although Scyther can pivot into resisted hits from mons like Lilligant and Hitmonchan, it can't switch in on as liberally due to the lack of eviolite
  • As a Scarfer, Scyther outspeeds the vast majority of the metagame (including weather threats like alolan sandslash, ludicolo, and victreebel) and can be dependable in revenge killing virtually any weakened offensive Pokemon. Be wary about potential Scarf variants of Pyroar, (rip) however.
  • Be careful about clicking Aerial Ace and Bug Bite with healthy defensive checks on the field, as the loss in momentum can be disadvantageous. Once they're weakened or removed, Scyther will be able to use them more liberally to pressure the opposing team.
Team Options
========
  • Defog support is critical for keeping Scyther healthy as it is often pivoting with U-Turn. Lurantis is amazing at pressuring standard checks like Mudsdale, Sableye, and Regirock while threatening bulky teams with its Contrary-boosted attacks. Skuntank can absorb Toxic Spikes, can pressure bulky Ghost-types, and can weaken offensive threats like Stoutland and Togedemaru with Sucker Punch and Aftermath after its job is done for Scyther to pick them off later. (spinners too, you get the point.)
  • Hazard support can pressure switch-ins more effectively, with Regirock appreciating Scyther's synergy with it for checking Grass- and Fighting-types like Lilligant and Hitmonchan. Qwilfish and Froslass can rack up Spikes and have the option of preventing opposing hazards and pressuring defensive Pokemon like Pyukumuku with recovery thanks to Taunt.
  • Wallbreakers that can heavily damage physically bulky checks include Aurorus, Alolan Exeggutor, and Drampa, all of which are extremely power special breakers that enjoy the momentum that Scyther provides to bring them in safely. Aggron is also relatively strong at wearing them down, especially considering how often mutual checks like Mudsdale are forced in to check it.
  • Fighting-types such as Gurdurr, Hitmonchan, and Assault Vest Crabominale offer great synergy as they can break through and defensively check Rock- and Steel-types like Aurorus, Alolan Sandslash, Aggron, and Lycanroc at varying levels.
  • Additional sources of momentum for a strong pivoting core include Lanturn and Eelektross, both of which can pressure Qwilfish, defensive Carracosta, and Mudsdale. Primeape can threaten Rock- and Steel-types and can is a Fighting-type that can break through Qwilfish thanks to Defiant.

move 3: Brick Break
move 4: Knock Off / Pursuit
item: Choice Band

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Scyther's Choice Band U-turn is a strong go-to option for providing momentum for teammates and weakening checks, and can force out Pokemon weak to Bug like Mesprit, Shiftry, and Bellossom.
  • Aerial Ace is a secondary STAB with good neutral coverage that doesn't force Scyther out, and heavily punishes Fighting-, Bug-, and Grass-types like Poliwrath, Pinsir, and Lurantis.
  • Brick Break rounds out Scyther's covering, OHKOing Togedemaru, Probopass, and Aggron after Stealth Rock damage.
  • Knock Off shortens the longevity of bulky Pokemon by removing items, which is great for crippling switch-ins like Regirock, Mudsdale, and defensive Carracosta.
  • Pursuit traps and heavily damages Ghost- and Psychic-types like Mesprit, Haunter, while being fairly adept at picking off a weakened bulky Oricorio-G. (also good for heavily damaging stuff like swanna if you expect it to switch out.)
Set Details
========
  • Max Attack equipped with Choice Band maximizes Scyther's immediate power, which operates well with U-Turn in chipping switch-ins.
  • Technician remains the best option for powering up Aerial Ace and boosts the power of Pursuit when the foe stays in.
  • Speed is maximized to outspeed as much as possible and to tie opposing Scyther and Manectric.
Usage Tips
========
  • Scyther should prioritize employing a hit and run strategy with powerful U-Turns to weaken checks like Sableye and Qwilfish early to mid-game.
  • While Scyther shouldn't be too aggressive when switching into what it checks due to the lack of Roost and Eviolite on this set, it is decent for pivoting into offensive threats like Gurdurr, Bellossom, and Primeape. (should only ever switch directly in when you're sure they won't go for the coverage in the case of the two fighting-types.) It can also pivot into defensive threats like Mesprit or Clefairy but must be wary of Thunder Wave.
  • Scyther can and should make use of its high natural speed to revenge kill threats like Swanna and Aurorus.
  • Scyther can use Pursuit when predicting a switch and when the Pokemon is directly threatened by Scyther such as Haunter and Jynx without a Choice Scarf.
  • Choice Band Scyther can be especially potent in situations where its set has not yet been revealed. Given that Steel-types are common initial switch-ins to Scyther, predicting targets like Aggron or Alolan Sandslash and breaking through them with Brick Break can be great for enabling Scyther to wallbreak or sweep with Aerial Ace later. Do note, however, that the damage output of this set can reveal Scyther's set earlier than intended.
Team Options
========
  • Entry hazard removal support, preferably Defoggers from Pokemon like Silvally-Water, Altaria, and Lurantis remain optimal to keep Scyther healthy once it comes in on the field. They all also have alternate ways of supporting Scyther, with Silvally-Water and Lurantis heavily pressuring bulky Rock-types and Mudsdale while Silvally-Water can pivot alongside Scyther with Parting Shot and Lurantis can better break through physically defensive Pokemon with Contrary Leaf Storm. Altaria can absorb status ailments that Scyther likes to avoid thanks to Natural Cure, and is great for wearing down opposing physically defensive Pokemon like Regirock and Mudsdale with Toxic. (third verse, same as the first. you don't have to say that spinners are good for preserving your own hazards again, but just mention like kabu among the other examples.)
  • Volt Switch and U-turn users that offer good typing synergy and are good at pressuring Scyther's defensive checks work solidly, with Lanturn and Eelektross being prime candidates for pressuring the likes of Weezing and Regirock
  • Fighting-types such as Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and Primeape are great for breaking through the defensive Rock- and Steel-types that Scyther can struggle to break through and all work for checking offensive checks like Kabutops and Lycanrock. Hitmonchan can also act as a secondary form of hazard control, Gurdurr can function as a bulky win con that absorbs status and is the best defensive switch-in to these Rock-types, and Primeape can form a solid offensive pivoting core with Scyther.
  • Late game cleaners that appreciate Choice Band's large damage output include Lilligant, Lycanroc, Combusken, as Scyther is great for breaking through Pokemon like Clefairy, Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, or Qwilfish that can otherwise stop their sweep.
  • Pokemon that can appreciate stuff like Ghosts and Jynx being trapped include the aforementioned Lilligant, as well as Pokemon like Mesprit and Oricorio-G.
  • Secondary wallbreakers that can break through physically defensive checks better like Aurorus, Haunter, and Drampa, while in return appreciate gaining momentum.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Offensive Swords Dance sets with Buginium Z or Fightinum Z can potentially do a fair job of breaking through traditional defensive checks like Mudsdale, Carracosta, and Regirock, but forgoes a lot of Scyther's defensive utility and can't really fit Roost without sacrifice coverage, limiting breaking potential. (mention eviolite too, offensive sd eviolite sets are actually not that bad and still retain some of the defensive utility from bulky sd.)
  • Quick Attack is boosted by Technician which offers Scyther a strong priority option for picking off faster threats like Floatzel or Choice Scarf Primeape, but these threats are already outsped by Choice Scarf sets and offers less utility than moves like Knock Off otherwise.
  • Tailwind is a niche utility move that Scyther can use to speed up its teammates for a few turns, but is very situational and is otherwise outclassed by Scyther's other utility options.
Checks and Counters

**Stealth Rock**: Scyther's 4x weakness to Rock means that it loses half of its HP when switching in with Stealth Rock on the field, greatly reducing its effectiveness and often puts it in a position where it would be forced to Roost to stay healthy.

Lanturn also baits in Grass-types, while Eelektross invites in Hitmonchan for Scyther to pressure. Fighting-types like Gurdurr and Hitmonchan are good at pressuring Rock- and Steel-types like Aggron, Lycanroc and Togedemaru, while Primeape is a way for forming a pivoting core that can capitalize on Qwilfish's Intimidate Wallbreakers like Aggron and Aurorus can punish the defensive teams that Scyther needs support to break through, while appreciating Scyther itself bringing them in safely with U-Turn. Power-Up Punch Kangaskhan with Fightinium Z is a notable option for luring Regirock. Hazard support, while difficult to accommodate for while also keeping hazards off its own field, can be helpful in taking advantage of the switches that Scyther can force early to mid-game. Froslass and Qwilfish can apply pressure to defensives team with their use of Taunt to force switches and have access Spikes to rack up chip damage.

U-Turn is Scyther’s primary Bug-STAB and fast pivoting option that works well in forcing out Pokemon like Lilligant and Jynx. Aerial Ace for strongest and most reliable Flying STAB with the best neutral coverage when checks are weakened, making it a great cleaning tool and deals solid damage to opposing Scyther and Fighting-types like Hitmonchan. Brick Break can revenge kill Alolan Sandslash under Hail when equipped with Scarf and is otherwise great for hitting non-Chople Berry Aggron, Probopass, and Togedemaru. It can also also OHKO Aurorus and hit Omastar harder. Knock Off can cripple defensive switch-ins by removing items from Pokemon like Altaria. Bug Bite is a strong STAB move that doesn't involve switching that can 2HKO defensive Mesprit and Assault Vest Lanturn. Toxic can cripple predicted defensive switch-ins like Regirock, Sableye, Pyukumuku, and Mudsdale, which all typically mind being poisoned more than losing their item in most cases. (to be fair, neither of these mons want to be poisioned, I'd make it more of a point to mention that Sableye and Pyukumuku would have to recover more often and Pyukumuku can have Rest, so I wouldn't say Toxic is the best option unless you only give examples of mons that lack recovery, but can take hits repeatively.)

Max Speed with Jolly when equipped with Choice Scarf lets Scyther outspeed nearly every other Choice Scarf user save other Scyther and Manectric, and even outspeeds potent weather abusers like Ludicolo, Alolan Sandslash, and Victreebel. Scyther can also outspeed +1 Lilligant, +2 Omastar, and +1 Jynx. The remaining EVs go to Attack to maximize Scyther's offensive presence. Technician is integral in boosting the base power of important STAB moves like Aerial Ace and Bug Bite.

Usage Tips
========

Scyther should mostly pivot with U-turn for much of the early-game to gain momentum chip away at Scyther's switch-ins and safely bring in teammates that can threaten them. Knock Off and Toxic can be good for crippling defensive checks early-game; one must be cautious about locking into Toxic, however, as it can be a major momentum drain if the opponent switches into Weezing, Qwilfish, or Aggron. Although Scyther can pivot into resisted hits from mons like Lilligant and Hitmonchan, it cannot switch in on as liberally due to the lack of Eviolite and Roost. As a Scarfer, Scyther outspeeds the vast majority of the metagame, including weather threats like Alolan Sandslash, Ludicolo, and Victreebel, and can be dependable in revenge killing virtually any weakened offensive Pokemon. Be careful about clicking Aerial Ace and Bug Bite with healthy defensive checks on the field, as the loss in momentum can be disadvantageous. Once they're weakened or removed, Scyther will be able to use them more liberally to pressure the opposing team.

Team Options
========

Defog support is critical for keeping Scyther healthy as it is often pivoting with U-Turn. Lurantis is amazing at pressuring standard checks like Mudsdale, Sableye, and Regirock while threatening bulky teams with its Contrary-boosted attacks. Skuntank can absorb Toxic Spikes (don't see how this part is relevant here considering Scyther is immune to Toxic Spikes.), can pressure bulky Ghost-types, and can weaken offensive threats like Stoutland and Togedemaru with Sucker Punch and Aftermath after its job is done for Scyther to pick them off later. Hazard support can pressure switch-ins more effectively, with Regirock appreciating Scyther's synergy with it for checking Grass- and Fighting-types like Lilligant and Hitmonchan. Qwilfish and Froslass can rack up Spikes and have the option of preventing opposing hazards and pressuring defensive Pokemon like Pyukumuku with recovery thanks to Taunt. Wallbreakers that heavily damage physically bulky checks include Aurorus, Alolan Exeggutor, and Drampa, all of which are extremely power special breakers that enjoy the momentum that Scyther gives to bring them in safely. Aggron is also relatively strong at wearing them down, especially considering how often mutual checks like Mudsdale are forced in to check it. Fighting-types such as Gurdurr, Hitmonchan, and Assault Vest Crabominale offer great synergy as they can break through and defensively check Rock- and Steel-types like Aurorus, Alolan Sandslash, Aggron, and Lycanroc at varying levels.

Scyther's Choice Band U-turn is a strong go-to pivot option for providing momentum for teammates and weakening checks and can force out Pokemon weak to Bug like Mesprit, Shiftry, and Bellossom. Aerial Ace is a secondary STAB with good neutral coverage that does not force Scyther out, and heavily punishes Fighting-, Bug-, and Grass-types like Poliwrath, Pinsir, and Lurantis. Brick Break rounds out Scyther's covering, OHKOing Togedemaru, Probopass, and Aggron after Stealth Rock damage. Knock Off shortens the longevity of bulky Pokemon by removing items, which is great for crippling switch-ins like Regirock, Mudsdale, and defensive Carracosta. Pursuit traps and heavily damages Ghost- and Psychic-types like Mesprit, Haunter, while being adept at picking off a weakened bulky Oricorio-G.

Set Details
========

Max Attack equipped with Choice Band maximizes Scyther's immediate power, which operates well with U-Turn in chipping switch-ins. Speed is maximized to outspeed as much as possible and to tie opposing Scyther and Manectric. Technician remains the best option for powering up Aerial Ace and boosts the power of Pursuit when the foe stays in.

Usage Tips
========

Scyther should prioritize employing a hit and run strategy with powerful U-Turns to weaken checks like Sableye and Qwilfish early to mid-game. While Scyther shouldn't be too aggressive when switching into what it checks due to the lack of Roost and Eviolite on this set, it is decent for pivoting into the resisted hits of offensive threats like Gurdurr, Bellossom, and Primeape. It can also pivot into defensive threats like Mesprit or Clefairy but must be wary of Thunder Wave. Scyther can and should make use of its high natural speed to revenge kill threats like Swanna and Aurorus. Scyther can use Pursuit when predicting a switch and when the Pokemon is threatened by Scyther such as Haunter and Jynx without a Choice Scarf. Choice Band Scyther can be especially potent in situations where its set is not yet revealed.

Entry hazard removal support, preferably Defoggers from Pokemon like Silvally-Water, Altaria, and Lurantis remain optimal to keep Scyther healthy once it comes in on the field. Altaria can absorb status ailments that Scyther likes to avoid thanks to Natural Cure and is great for wearing down opposing physically defensive Pokemon like Regirock and Mudsdale with Toxic. Spinners are an alternate form of hazard control, with Pokemon like Kabutops being good partners as it can also pressure Rock- and Steel-types. Volt Switch and U-turn users that offer good synergy and are good at pressuring Scyther's defensive checks work solidly, with Lanturn and Eelektross being prime candidates for pressuring the likes of Weezing and Regirock. Fighting-types like Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and Primeape can break through the defensive Rock- and Steel-types that Scyther can struggle against and all work for checking offensive checks like Kabutops and Lycanrock. Hitmonchan can also act as a secondary form of hazard control, Gurdurr can function as a bulky win con that absorbs status and is the best defensive switch-in to these Rock-types, and Primeape can form a solid offensive pivoting core with Scyther. Late game cleaners that appreciate Choice Band's large damage output include Lilligant, Lycanroc, Combusken, as Scyther is great for breaking through Pokemon like Clefairy, Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, or Qwilfish that can otherwise stop their sweep. Pokemon that can appreciate stuff like Ghosts and Jynx being trapped include the aforementioned Lilligant, as well as Pokemon like Mesprit and Oricorio-G. Secondary wallbreakers that can break through physically defensive checks better like Aurorus, Haunter, and Drampa, while in return appreciate gaining momentum.

Other Options
=============

Minor deviations of the Swords Dance set include a fully Eviolite offensive investment at the cost of some bulk. Similarly, Offensive Swords Dance sets with Buginium Z or Fightinum Z can potentially do a fair job of breaking through traditional defensive checks like Mudsdale, Carracosta, and Regirock, but forgoes a lot of Scyther's defensive utility and can't really fit Roost without sacrifice coverage, limiting breaking potential. Quick Attack is boosted by Technician which offers Scyther a strong priority option for picking off faster threats like Floatzel or Choice Scarf Primeape, but these threats are already outsped by Choice Scarf sets and offers less utility than moves like Knock Off otherwise. Tailwind is a niche utility move that Scyther can use to speed up its teammates for a few turns but is very situational and is otherwise outclassed by Scyther's other utility options.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Faster Pokemon**: Scyther is prone to be threatened by many offensive Pokemon such as Pyroar (rip), Froslass, and Alolan Raichu, all of which are naturally faster and can outright threaten Scyther with their STAB options.

(specify that neither of the Pokemon mention wants to directly switch into Scyther as Banded variants can OHKO the former and 2HKO the latter with Aerial Ace.)

[OVERVIEW]

Scyther has a potent combination of great offensive presence with its powerful Attack stat and Speed and substantial defensive utility with usable bulk and access to Roost. Its unique rare Bug / Flying typing lets it heavily pressure relevant threats like Mesprit, Gurdurr, and Lilligant (RC) while taking as well as take on powerful Fighting- and Grass-type attacks from Pokemon like Primeape and Alolan Exeggutor-Alola. Scyther is also quite flexible with items; it can run Eviolite to augment its bulk and function as a potent bulky setup sweeper, Choice Scarf to act as a premier great revenge killer that can punish premier weather threats like Ludicolo, Alolan Sandslash, and Victreebel, and Choice Band to function as a powerful wallbreaker that is efficient at pressuring certain switch-ins like Togedemaru and Oricorio-E. Scyther’s great Speed and strong excellent offensive presence makes it a top-notch player in generating way to generate momentum for offensive teams with its strong and quick U-turn. However, despite Scyther's strong typing, it is plagued by a severe Stealth Rock weakness that limits its ability in play, although bulky Swords Dance sets with Roost can slightly mitigate this. This same 4x weakness leaves it disadvantageous in dealing with the prominent Rock-types in the tier including Regirock, Aggron, and Lycanroc. It also renders Scyther inconsistent in checking many of those same Fighting-type Pokemon it regularly pressures, as well as other Pokemon like Lilligant that can run Rock-type coverage to threaten it. Other weaknesses include Ice- and Electric-, where it is prone Ice and Electric, leaving Scyther vulnerable to faster Pokemon like Froslass and Choice Scarf Togedemaru. Despite its offensive prowess, Scyther's inability to nuke blast through Pokemon in the way that Aggron and Aurorus can often leaves it requiring reliant on support to deal with physical walls like the aforementioned Regirock, Sableye, Pyukumuku, and Weezing. Regardless, Scyther's offensive and defensive capabilities, combined with its good item flexibility gives give it all the tools it needs to be a potent team player in the PU metagame.

Swords Dance gradually increases Scyther's threat level by boosting its Attack two stages, allowing it to use its bulk to take advantage of and break through bulky Pokemon such as Tangela, Gurdurr, and Clefairy. Roost is key to the nature of this set, letting it Scyther stay healthy throughout the match, (AC) which allows it to mitigate its Stealth Rock weakness and liberally check Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Lurantis. Temporarily removing its Flying typing (RH) also helps it safely recover against coverage options from Pokemon like Hitmonchan. U-turn is Scyther’s bread and butter STAB choice that applies great offensive pressure while allowing it pivot out of and weakening weaken checks such as Regirock, Weezing, and Mudsdale so that it can sweep more easily in the late-game. Aerial Ace is Scyther’s strongest cleaning tool due to being Scyther’s strongest STAB as well as its Flying typing granting it with the best neutral coverage. Its coverage is also great for threatening Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and opposing Scyther. Brick Break can work as a choice for hitting Aggron and Alolan Sandslash if it Scyther wants stronger coverage overall at the cost of sacrificing U-turn’s utility.

Maximum Speed with a Jolly nature is crucial to make sure Scyther fast as possible, allowing it to threaten notable Pokemon such as Jynx and Lilligant before they can retaliate. 248 HP EVs lets let Scyther maximize its health to give it as much mixed bulk as possible, while also ensuring that it can switch into Stealth Rock at least twice. Eviolite further bolsters Scyther's defenses, allowing it to pivot into Pokemon like Hitmonchan and Mesprit more comfortably and set up or heal against them. Technician is the prime ability for this set, (AC) as it boosts the Base Power of Scyther's main attacking move, Aerial Ace, to a high 90 Base Power.

Usage Tips
========

This set involves using its bulk to switch into Pokemon that struggle to threaten it like Clefairy, Tangela, and defensive Mesprit (RC) and either setting up or pivot out appropriately. Scyther can act as a Fighting-type check that can pivot into and either threaten or heal up against Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and Primeape, but must be wary of coverage moves like Stone Edge as that can often take it out on prediction. Otherwise, Scyther should dedicate its early to mid-game presence to weakening checks like Regirock, Mudsdale and Togedemaru with U-Turn and keep up momentum for its team before attempting a sweep. Setting up Swords Dance does not have to be purely for sweeping, as weakening checks early-game can work if they aren’t brought in initially, but this is often situational. It is also useful for breaking through bulky Pokemon such as Altaria. Scyther can use its Speed to pick off weakened Pokemon like Haunter, Kangaskhan, or nd Jynx. Scyther should avoid switching into Stealth Rock, (AC) as the 50% damage chip can often force situations where it must Roost initially as opposed to setting up, which could lose cost momentum. Preserving its health with Roost is always key for always keeping Scyther above the range of Stealth Rock damage and staying healthy. This also gives it longevity for checking Grass- and Fighting-type Pokemon, loses sheds its Flying typing (RH) to scout for moves like Lanturn's Volt Switch or and Hitmonchan's Thunder Punch, dodging dodges Sucker Punch from users like Absol, and takes advantage of Pokemon that can't do any significant damage such as Lurantis and Skuntank. Scyther should avoid status ailments whenever possible, and thus it must be wary when being used to take advantage of Pokemon like Poliwrath and Gourgeist-XL, (AC) as they often have options for crippling it in a way that severely hinders its effectiveness throughout the match.

Swords Dance Scyther operates well on offensive and balanced teams that appreciate Scyther's its ability to not only check threats but also function as a proactive pivot and late-game sweeper. Defoggers such as Silvally-Water and -Dragon (AH) can pressure Scyther's defensive checks like Regirock, defensive Carracosta, and Mudsdale (RC) and appreciate Scyther's ability in taking to take advantage of Pokemon like Lurantis, Hitmonchan, and Clefairy. They also offer Parting Shot for momentum and ease in setting up. Rapid Spin support is less optimal for hazard control but lets you run your own entry hazards without losing an option to wear down the opponent’s team. Omastar is a particularly notable mention, (AC) as defensive sets can easily sponge Scyther's hits and offensive sets can easily use Scyther as setup fodder in a 1v1 one-on-one scenario.

**Steel-types**: Pokemon such as Alolan Sandslash-Alola and Probopass are resilient to any attack aside from Brick Break and can threaten Scyther with their respective Ice- and Rock-type STAB attacks. Choice Scarf Togedemaru can outspeed Scyther and use its Electric-type STAB attacks to directly threaten it, but it much be wary of Choice variants of Scyther, (AC) as Choice Scarf sets can outspeed and threaten it with Brick Break while Togedemaru does not switch in well against Choice Band, being potentially 2HKOd 2HKOed by U-turn with entry hazards up and can also run OHKOed by Brick Break.

Thunder Wave from Mesprit and Clefairy, two Pokemon that Scyther is good at taking advantage of, heavily cripples Scyther, (AC) as paralysis makes it much more susceptible to getting revenge killed. Burns also heavily cripple Scyther for obvious reasons, and Scyther must be wary of Pokemon like Poliwrath and Gourgeist-XL that it otherwise capitalizes on as because of Scald and Will-O-Wisp are potential threats to its status. Neither Pokemon wants to directly switch into Scyther, (AC) though, as they are weak to Aerial Ace.

[OVERVIEW]

Scyther has a potent combination of great offensive presence and substantial defensive utility with usable bulk and access to Roost. Its rare (not rare) Bug / Flying typing lets it heavily pressure relevant threats like Mesprit, Gurdurr, and Lilligant as well as take on powerful Fighting- and Grass-type attacks from Pokemon like Primeape and Alolan Exeggutor. Scyther’s Scyther's great Speed and excellent offensive presence makes make it a top-notch way to generate momentum for offensive teams with its strong and quick U-turn. However, despite Scyther's strong typing, it is plagued by a severe Stealth Rock weakness that limits its ability in play, although bulky Swords Dance sets with Roost can slightly mitigate this. This same 4x weakness leaves it disadvantageous in causes it to have difficulty dealing with the prominent Rock-types in the tier, (AC) including Regirock, Aggron, and Lycanroc. It also renders Scyther inconsistent in checking many of those same Fighting-type Pokemon it regularly pressures, as well as other Pokemon like Lilligant that can run Rock-type coverage to threaten it. Other Scyther's other weaknesses include Ice and Electric, leaving Scyther it vulnerable to faster Pokemon like Froslass and Choice Scarf Togedemaru. Despite its offensive prowess, Scyther's inability to blast through Pokemon in the way that Aggron and Aurorus can often leaves it reliant on support to deal with physical walls like the aforementioned Regirock, Sableye, Pyukumuku, and Weezing. Regardless, Scyther's offensive and defensive capabilities, (RC) combined with its good item flexibility give it all the tools it needs to be a potent team player in the PU metagame.

Moves

Swords Dance gradually increases Scyther's threat level by boosting its Attack two stages, allowing it to use its bulk to take advantage of and break through bulky Pokemon such as Tangela, Gurdurr, and Clefairy. Roost is key to the nature of this set, letting lets (fluff) Scyther stay healthy throughout the match, which allows it to mitigate its Stealth Rock weakness and liberally check Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Lurantis. Temporarily removing its Roost temporarily removing Scyther's Flying typing also helps it safely recover against coverage options from Pokemon like Hitmonchan. U-turn is Scyther’s bread and butter STAB choice that (also fluff) applies great offensive pressure while allowing it Scyther to pivot out of and weaken checks such as Regirock, Weezing, and Mudsdale so that it can sweep more easily late-game. Aerial Ace is Scyther’s Scyther's strongest cleaning tool with the best neutral coverage. Its coverage is also great for threatening Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and opposing Scyther. Brick Break can work as a choice for hitting Aggron and Alolan Sandslash if Scyther wants stronger coverage overall at the cost of sacrificing U-turn’s U-turn's utility.

Set Details

Maximum Speed investment with a Jolly nature is crucial to make sure Scyther fast as possible, allowing it to threaten notable Pokemon such as Jynx and Lilligant before they can retaliate. 248 HP EVs let Scyther maximize its health to give it as much mixed bulk as possible, (RC) while also ensuring that it can switch into Stealth Rock at least twice. Eviolite further bolsters Scyther's defenses, allowing it to pivot into Pokemon like Hitmonchan and Mesprit more comfortably and set up or heal against them. Technician is the prime ability for this set, as it boosts the Base Power of Scyther's main attacking move, Aerial Ace, to a high 90.

Usage Tips
========

This set involves using uses its bulk to switch into Pokemon that struggle to threaten it like Clefairy, Tangela, and defensive Mesprit and either setting up or pivot sets up or pivots out appropriately. Scyther can act as a Fighting-type check that can pivot into and either threaten or heal up against or threaten Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, and Primeape, but it must be wary of coverage moves like Stone Edge as that can often take it out on with prediction. Otherwise, Scyther should dedicate its early early- to mid-game presence to weakening checks like Regirock, Mudsdale and Togedemaru with U-Turn U-turn and keep keeping up momentum for its team before attempting a sweep. Setting up Swords Dance does not have to be purely for sweeping, as weakening checks early-game can work if they aren’t aren't brought in initially, but this is often situational. Preserving its Scyther's health with Roost is always key for always keeping Scyther it above the range of Stealth Rock damage and staying healthy.

========

Rapid Spin support is less optimal for hazard control but lets you run your own entry hazards without losing an option to wear down the opponent’s team. (running defog does not cause you to be unable to use your own hazards period) Rapid Spin support, while not as optimal as Defog, can be used instead to preserve any entry hazards set by Scyther's team. Fighting-types like Gurdurr and Hitmonchan are good at pressuring Rock- and Steel-types like Aggron, Lycanroc, and Togedemaru, while Primeape is a way for forming forms a pivoting core that and can capitalize on Qwilfish's Intimidate. Froslass and Qwilfish can apply pressure to defensives team defensive teams with Taunt to force switches and have access to Spikes to rack up chip damage.

Moves

U-turn is Scyther’s Scyther's primary Bug Bug-type STAB attack and fast pivoting option that works well in forcing out Pokemon like Lilligant and Jynx. Aerial Ace is its Scyther's strongest and most reliable Flying Flying-type STAB move with the best neutral coverage making it a great cleaning tool with great neutral coverage that allows it to clean efficiently, and it deals solid damage to opposing Scyther and Fighting-types like Hitmonchan. Brick Break can lets Scyther revenge kill Alolan Sandslash under hail thanks to Choice Scarf and is otherwise great for hitting non-Chople Berry Aggron, Probopass, and Togedemaru Togedemaru and non-Chople Berry Aggron and Probopass. It can also also OHKO Aurorus and hit Omastar harder. Knock Off can cripple defensive switch-ins like Altaria by removing their items from them.

Set Details

Maximum Speed investment with a Jolly nature and Choice Scarf lets Scyther outspeed nearly every other Choice Scarf user save other Scyther and Manectric, (RC) and even potent weather sweepers like Ludicolo, Alolan Sandslash, and Victreebel. Technician is integral in boosting the base power Base Power of important STAB moves like Aerial Ace and Bug Bite.

Usage Tips
========

Scyther should mostly pivot with U-turn for much of the early game early-game to gain momentum, chip away at its switch-ins, and safely bring in teammates that can threaten them. Knock Off and Toxic can be good for crippling defensive checks early-game; one must be cautious about locking into Toxic, however, as it can be a major momentum drain if the opponent switches to Weezing, Qwilfish, or Aggron. Although Scyther can pivot into resisted hits from foes like Lilligant and Hitmonchan, it cannot switch in on as liberally due to the lack of Eviolite and Roost it lacks the bulk required to take repeated or neutral hits, meaning that it should only do so if necessary. (try not to cross-reference sets to that magnitude; these are meant to be read separately from each other) As a Choice Scarf user, Scyther outspeeds the vast majority of the metagame, including weather threats like Alolan Sandslash, Ludicolo, and Victreebel, and it can be dependable in revenge killing virtually any weakened offensive Pokemon. Be careful about clicking using Aerial Ace and Bug Bite with healthy defensive checks on the field, as the loss in momentum can be disadvantageous. Once they're weakened or removed, Scyther will be able to use these moves more liberally to pressure the opposing team.

Team Options
========

Qwilfish and Froslass can rack up set Spikes and have the option of preventing opposing hazards and pressuring defensive Pokemon with recovery like Pyukumuku with recovery thanks to Taunt. Wallbreakers that heavily damage physically bulky checks include Pokemon such as Aurorus, Alolan Exeggutor, and Drampa, (RC) all of which are all extremely power special breakers powerful special wallbreakers that can heavily damage physically bulky checks to Scyther and enjoy the momentum that Scyther gives to bring them in safely. Aggron is also relatively strong at wearing them down Scyther's checks, especially considering how often mutual checks like Mudsdale are forced in to check it. Fighting-types such as Gurdurr, Hitmonchan, and Assault Vest Crabominale Crabominable offer great synergy, as they can break through and defensively check Rock- and Steel-types like Aurorus, Alolan Sandslash, Aggron, and Lycanroc Lycanroc, Aggron, and Alolan Sandslash to varying levels.

Moves
========

Scyther's Choice Band-boosted U-turn is a strong go-to pivot option for providing momentum for teammates and weakening checks and can force out Pokemon weak to Bug like Mesprit, Shiftry, and Bellossom. Aerial Ace is a secondary STAB attack with good neutral coverage that does not force Scyther out and heavily punishes Fighting-, Bug-, and Grass-types like Poliwrath, Pinsir, and Lurantis. Brick Break rounds out Scyther's covering coverage, OHKOing Togedemaru, Probopass, and Aggron after Stealth Rock damage. Knock Off reduces the longevity of bulky Pokemon by removing their items, which is great for crippling switch-ins like Regirock, Mudsdale, and defensive Carracosta. Pursuit traps and heavily damages Ghost- and Psychic-types like Mesprit and Haunter and is adept at picking off a weakened bulky Oricorio-G.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack investment combined with Choice Band maximizes Scyther's immediate power, which works well with U-turn in chipping switch-ins. Speed investment is maximized to outspeed as many foes as possible and to Speed tie opposing Scyther and Manectric. Technician remains is the best option for powering up Aerial Ace and boosting the power of Pursuit when the foe stays in.

Usage Tips
========

Scyther should prioritize a hit-and-run strategy with powerful U-turns to weaken checks like Sableye and Qwilfish early- to mid-game. While Scyther shouldn't be too aggressive when switching into what it checks due to the lack of Roost and Eviolite on this set its lacking longevity, it is decent for pivoting into the resisted hits from offensive threats like Gurdurr, Bellossom, and Primeape. It can also pivot into defensive threats like Mesprit and Clefairy but must be wary of Thunder Wave. Scyther can and should make use of its high natural speed Speed to revenge kill threats like Swanna and Aurorus. Scyther can use Pursuit when predicting a switch and when the Pokemon is threatened by Scyther such as non-Choice Scarf Haunter and Jynx. Choice Band Scyther can be especially potent in situations where its set is not yet revealed. Given that Steel-types are common initial switch-ins to Scyther, predicting targets like Aggron or and Alolan Sandslash to switch in and breaking through them with Brick Break can be great for enabling Scyther to wallbreak or sweep with Aerial Ace later. Do note, however, that the damage output of this set can reveal Scyther's set earlier than intended.

Team Options
========

Entry hazard removal support, preferably from Defoggers like Silvally-Water, Altaria, and Lurantis, remains is optimal to keep Scyther healthy once it comes in on the field. They all also have alternate ways of supporting Scyther, (RC) with: (Add colon) Silvally-Water and Lurantis heavily pressuring pressure bulky Rock-types and Mudsdale while, (AC) Silvally-Water can pivot alongside Scyther with Parting Shot, (AC) and Lurantis can better break through physically defensive Pokemon with Contrary Leaf Storm. Late-game cleaners that appreciate Choice BandScyther's Band Scyther's large damage output include Lilligant, Lycanroc, and Combusken, as Scyther is great for breaking through Pokemon like Clefairy, Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, or and Qwilfish that can otherwise stop their sweep.

=============

Minor deviations of the Swords Dance set include a fully offensive spread with Eviolite, which comes at the cost of some bulk. Similarly, offensive Swords Dance sets with Buginium Z or Fightinium Z can potentially do a fair job of breaking through traditional defensive checks like Mudsdale, Carracosta, and Regirock, but such a set forgoes sets forgo a lot of Scyther's defensive utility and can't really fit Roost without sacrifice coverage, limiting their breaking potential. Technician-boosted Quick Attack offers Scyther a strong priority option for picking off faster threats like Floatzel or and Choice Scarf Primeape, but these threats are already outsped by Choice Scarf sets, and Quick Attack offers less utility than moves like Knock Off otherwise. Tailwind is a niche utility move that Scyther can use to speed up its teammates for a few turns but is very situational and is otherwise outclassed by Scyther's other utility options.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Stealth Rock**: Scyther's 4x weakness to Rock means that it loses half of its HP when switching in with Stealth Rock on the field, greatly reducing its effectiveness and often putting it in a position where it would be forced to Roost to stay healthy.

**Rock-types**: Bulky Rock-types such as Regirock, Aggron, and Carracosta have little issues comfortably taking Scyther's attacks barring the occasional Brick Break in Aggron's case, and they all scare it out with the threat of an OHKO with their STAB move moves.

Choice Scarf Togedemaru can outspeed Scyther and use its Electric-type STAB attacks to directly threaten it, but it much be wary of Choice variants of Scyther, as Choice Scarf sets can outspeed and threaten it with Brick Break while. (AP) Togedemaru also does not switch in well against Choice Band Scyther, being potentially 2HKOed by U-turn with entry hazards up and OHKOed by Brick Break.
