[OVERVIEW]
Anorith possesses a large base 95 Attack stat, one of the highest in the tier, boosted to obscene levels after a Swords Dance. At +2, there are very few Pokemon that can consistently check Anorith defensively, common physical walls such as Porygon and Duskull being OHKOed. However, Anorith's lack of defensive utility limits its opportunities to switch in, and its Speed tier leaves it vulnerable to being revenge killed by faster Pokemon such as Staryu and Abra. Furthermore, it has to be extremely careful against Pokemon that carry Thunder Wave, as being paralyzed halts its sweep entirely. Despite its shortcomings, Anorith shines as one of the tiers best wallbreakers and mid-game sweepers, and should always be accounted for whenever building a team.
[SET]
Swords Dance (Anorith) @ Sitrus Berry
Level: 5
Ability: Battle Armor
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Rock Blast / Rock Slide
- Brick Break
- Substitute
[SET COMMENTS]
The EVs listed maximize Anorith's sweeping capabilities, maxing out Attack and Speed and putting the rest into its Defence. Swords Dance boosts its Attack stat to a staggering 38, allowing it to muscle through most of the tier. Rock Blast is generally Anorith's strongest STAB move, but Rock Slide may be used to sacrifice power for consistency and let Anorith luck through certain matchups with flinches. Brick Break is crucial coverage for Porygon and Magnemite, a +2 Brick Break being one of the few attacks able to consistently OHKO physically defensive Porygon sets. Substitute allows Anorith to blank any status moves aimed at it, giving it a free opportunity to set up Swords Dance once up.
Pokemon with Thunder Wave can paralyze opposing Pokemon that would otherwise outspeed and stop Anorith's sweep, such as Voltorb and Elekid. Porygon is especially notable in this role, as it also removes Diglett via its ability Trace. Anorith's immense power allows it to break through walls like Porygon and Duskull with ease, so it works best with teammates that appreciate its breaking power in order to facilitate their sweep. Abra and Anorith form a powerful offensive core together, Abra sweeping with powerful psychics once bulkier Pokemon have been removed. Bagon and Larvitar can setup using Dragon Dance to sweep teams once physical walls have been chipped down.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Endure + Salac Berry can be used to survive an attack from a faster Pokemon and outspeed after, sweeping teams with after Lum Berry may be considered to cure status, replacing Substitute with a coverage move, but a lack of Sitrus Berry heavily cuts into Anorith's bulk and ultimately does more harm than good.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Faster Pokemon**: Faster Pokemon such as Staryu, Abra and Ponyta can revenge kill or paralyze Anorith after it has taken a kill.
**Paralysis**: Whilst being a strong tool for it, Paralysis is also Anorith's biggest enemy. Pokemon with Thunder Wave risk paralyzing Anorith, neutering it and leaving it extremely vulnerable to attackers.
**Ground-types**: Bulky Ground-types such as Cubone or Baltoy survive any hit from Anorith at +2, beating it one-on-one.
