Reaching for the skies

[Overview]

Shelgon's excellent physical bulk and decent Attack stat allow it to separate itself from Fraxure and Dragonair. With its good bulk, it is a decent switch-in to many powerful physical attackers, such as Sawk, Swellow, and Scolipede. Its Dragon Dance set can set up on many walls and is tough to take down after several boosts, as it takes little damage from priority moves. It can also become a physical wall, utilizing its amazing Defense stat. However, it has a terrible Special Defense stat as well as poor Speed, leaving it outsped by fast special attackers even after several turns of setup, most notably by the common Jynx.

[SET]
name: Bulky Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Outrage
move 3: Rest
move 4: Sleep Talk
item: Eviolite
ability: Overcoat
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 20 Atk / 236 Def

[SET COMMENTS]

This Shelgon can potentially tear apart bulky teams as it has more setup opportunities against them and these teams have fewer methods of taking it down. Dragon Dance Shelgon is also an extremely effective late-game sweeper, especially if it is the last Pokemon alive, as it can no longer be phazed out.

Dragon Dance boosts Shelgon's Attack and Speed, making it more powerful and fast, and potentially allow Shelgon to sweep. Outrage is Shelgon's STAB move and hits hard after several boosts. Furthermore, the locking-in effect of Outrage does not occur if selected by Sleep Talk. Rest allows Shelgon to absorb status and set up as much as it likes, especially in the face of walls, before healing off all the damage. Sleep Talk prevents Shelgon from being a sitting duck during its sleep and allows it to grab more boosts or hit something hard with Outrage.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The HP and Defense EVs on the spread help Shelgon to avoid the 2HKO from Jolly Choice Band Sawk's Close Combat, and the rest are thrown into Attack to slightly power Shelgon up. An alternative EV spread of 252 HP / 164 Def / 92 Spe allows Shelgon to outpace base 95 Speed Pokemon at +2, but it loses out on a lot of bulk and, ultimately, setup opportunities. Do note that this alternative spread can outspeed Jynx, who otherwise troubles Shelgon, which is useful if you do not have any other methods of removing it.

Shelgon dislikes opposing Bastiodon, which can easily tank boosted Outrages and phaze it with Roar. Magnet Pull Probopass is a decent partner for Shelgon, as it can trap and kill Bastiodon. Sawk and Golurk are also good partners, as they can take care of the Steel-types that threaten to stop Shelgon. Meanwhile, Shelgon easily sets up on Alomomola and Tangela, who can wall Sawk and Golurk. Shelgon absolutely hates Jynx, as it can outspeed, even at +2, and easily KO with Ice Beam. Metang beats Jynx and is therefore a good partner. Furthermore, it can also take care of Bastiodon if it carries Earthquake. Pursuit trappers can also help to reliably revenge kill Jynx and remove it entirely. Tauros and Scolipede are decent partners for this. Shelgon also appreciates Toxic Spikes support, as it lets Shelgon wear down walls while setting up on them. Scolipede, as well as Garbodor, are effective Toxic Spikes users.

[SET]
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Wish
move 2: Protect
move 3: Toxic / Roar
move 4: Dragon Claw
item: Eviolite
ability: Rock Head
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 236 Def / 20 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

This set focuses on Shelgon's amazing Defense to wall many of the tier's physical attackers. While it faces competition as a physical wall from the likes of Alomomola, Tangela, and Weezing, its typing gives it resistances to Water-, Fire-, Electric-, and Grass-type moves. Wish is mainly a form of recovery for Shelgon. In a pinch, it can also grant a teammate some additional health, but due to Shelgon's low HP stat, it is recommended that it is not relied on as a Wish passer. Protect allows Shelgon to scout for moves, rack up Toxic damage, and receive its own Wishes safely. Toxic allows Shelgon to cripple walls, annoy offensive opponents that do not appreciate residual damage, and become an amazing Toxic stalling machine. On the other hand, Roar allows Shelgon to take on the role as a phazer and prevents opponents from setting up on it. Dragon Claw is mainly used as a STAB move to finish off weakened foes and avoid becoming Taunt bait.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

While Rock Head sees no use on this set, it is the only ability available because Overcoat is illegal with Wish. This Shelgon set is good on stall teams that need resistances to the four elemental types because it can take on physical attackers relatively well. Because this set hates opposing special attackers, special walls are good teammates. Munchlax is a decent teammate, as it can handle Ice-type attacks easily. Its amazing Special Defense allows it to tank most special hits that Shelgon cannot, and it can even phaze if you choose to run Toxic on Shelgon. Lickilicky can handle special attackers decently well and provide Shelgon with Wish and Heal Bell support. This set hates Toxic Spikes; therefore, grounded Poison-type teammates, such as Garbodor and Vileplume, are recommended. Shelgon also needs cleric support because it can no longer stall effectively once it gets crippled by status. Lickilicky and Vileplume can fulfill that role as well. Finally, this set also loves Toxic Spikes support on the opponent's side, as its stalling job becomes much easier if it does not need to Toxic the opponent manually. The previously mentioned Garbodor can set them up easily.

[Other Options]

An offensive Dragon Dance set is possible, as Shelgon can outspeed base 95s after a boost with maximum Speed investment, but this set faces stiff competition from Fraxure and cannot set up as effectively without defensive EVs. The Dragon Dance set can run Brick Break to beat Bastiodon, but because it's hard to find a spare moveslot, it is generally better to rely on team support to do so as Bastiodon is not that common. Toxic can also be used on the Dragon Dance set as it can wear down Alomomola and Tangela, but once again, it is better to rely on Toxic Spikes support, as Shelgon really struggles to fit Toxic into its moveset. DragonBreath can help the team spread paralysis, but it lacks power for the Dragon Dance set and clashes with Toxic for the physical wall set. In addition, it works off Shelgon's weak Special Attack stat. Otherwise, Shelgon does not have many other options because its sets are very inflexible and its movepool is not very large.

[Checks and Counters]

Bastiodon is a great counter to both sets, as it completely walls the defensive set and it can phaze the Dragon Dance set if Shelgon isn't the last Pokemon remaining. Probopass and Metang can beat the defensive set with Flash Cannon and Toxic, respectively. However, the Dragon Dance variant can set up on them. Klang can set up on Shelgon and eventually KO it with Gear Grind before it can do the same. Most special attackers can also beat Shelgon, especially those carrying an Ice-type move. However, they might face some trouble switching in against the offensive set. Regice and Piloswine can tank unboosted Outrages with their good bulk and KO Shelgon. Charizard and Jynx are fast special attackers that easily destroy Shelgon if they get in safely, and they can even outspeed Shelgon at +2. Choice Scarf Jynx in particular can revenge kill Shelgon easily, as it outspeeds even at +5. Physical wall Shelgon hates Toxic, as it has no way of healing it bar cleric support from its teammates. Therefore, Toxic Spikes are a very good way to wear down Shelgon. Shelgon also hates losing its Eviolite, as it can no longer take hits easily. Thus, using Trick or Knock Off to remove it is a good way to cripple Shelgon.

[Overview]

- Excellent physical defense
- Differentiates itself from Dragonair with better attack and physical bulk
- Decent switch-in to dangerous stuffs like Sawk, Swellow, Scolipede
- Hard to take down after several boosts due to it being able to tank most common forms of priority
- Bad special defense, prevalence of Jynx doesn't help it

[SET]
name: Bulky Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Outrage
move 3: Rest
move 4: Sleep Talk
item: Eviolite
ability: Overcoat
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 20 Atk / 236 Def

[SET COMMENTS]

- Best vs bulky or stall teams since they generally have fewer methods to take it out, meanwhile it can set up all it likes
- Effective late game sweeper especially when last mon cos no phazing
- Dragon Dance prepares Shelgon for a sweep
- Outrage is STAB move, locking in doesn't occur during Sleep Talk
- Rest allows Shelgon to boost up as much as it likes before healing away damage, status
- Sleep Talk to avoid being sitting duck, potentially grabs more boosts / kills stuff
- Afterwards can probably start sweeping

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

- EV spread avoids 2HKO from Jolly CB Sawk Close Combat
- Alternative EV spread of 252 HP / 164 Def / 92 Spe to outspeed base 95s at +2 but you lose out on a lot of physical bulk
- Dislikes Bastiodon who can tank whatever from it
- Magnet Pull Probopass is a good partner, takes care of it
- Sawk and Golurk are good partners to take care of Steel-types in general while Shelgon sets up on Alomomola and Tangela
- It hates Jynx
- Metang beats Jynx, doesn't fair too badly against Bastiodon especially if it runs EQ
- Pursuit trappers help a lot to revenge kill eg. Scarf Tauros, Scolipede
- Likes Toxic Spikes support as it lets it set up on things and wear them down simultaneouly
- Scolipede and Garbodor are effective Toxic Spikes users

[SET]
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Wish
move 2: Protect
move 3: Toxic / Roar
move 4: Dragon Claw
item: Eviolite
ability: Rock Head
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 236 Def / 20 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

- Focuses on Shelgon's great defense to try walling physical attackers, but faces competition from Mola, Tangela and Weezing
- Nice typing (resists four elements) helps it, though you most watch out for its Ice-type weakness
- Wish is mostly for self healing, can kinda heal its teammates but don't count on it due to low HP stat
- Protect racks up residual damage, scout for moves
- Toxic helps it stall a lot, lots of things don't appreciate the residual damage
- Roar allows Shelgon to take on the role as a phazer and prevents opponents from setting up on it
- Dragon Claw is STAB and avoid Taunt bait

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

- Rock Head because Overcoat is illegal with Wish
- Good on stall teams
- Munchlax works very well as a teammate as it handles Ice-type attacks easily, can tank most special hits and phase if you choose to run Toxic
- Lickilicky can also handle Scarf Jynx pretty well, provides Wish and Heal Bell support
- This set hates Toxic Spikes; Garbodor, Vileplume or Skuntank can absorb them
- Absolutely needs Heal Bell support because it is effectively done for once it gets Toxic'd
- Aforementioned Lickilicky and Vileplume can do so
- This set loves Toxic Spikes support as well
- Aforementioned Garbodor can set them up easily

[Other Options]

- Offensive DD set, max speed can outrun base 95s after a boost, but faces stiff competition from Fraxure
- Brick Break for DD set to beat Bastiodon and Probo
- Toxic for DD helps against mola and tangela and weezing
- Dragonbreath can help spread paralysis but lacks power for the DD set and clashes with Toxic for the physical wall
- Not many options because its sets are very inflexible and its movepool isn't very notable

[Checks and Counters]

- Bastiodon beats both sets as it completely walls the defensive set, can phaze the offensive one if it isn't the last mon left
- Probopass and Metang beat the defensive set with Earth Power and Toxic respectively, gets set up on by DD tho
- Klang can set up on it and eventually KO it with Gear Grind before Shelgon can do the same
- Most special attackers, especially those carrying an Ice-type move. Might have trouble switching in though
- Regice can tank an unboosted Outrage with its good bulk and kill, Piloswine as well
- Charizard and Jynx are examples of fast special attackers that can kill it if they get in safely, they outspeed Shelgon even at +2 (especially Scarf Jynx who outspeeds even +5 Shelgon and completely and utterly destroys and obliterates it)
- Physical wall Shelgon hates Toxic damage as it has no way of healing it bar Heal Bell support; Toxic Spikes are a very good way for that
- Shelgon hates losing its Eviolite so Tricking it away w/ smth like Rotom-S or Knocking it Off with smth like Gurdurr works

Magnet Pull Probopass is pretty legit, and in this case it really helps because it can weaken (or better still, kill) those pesky steels with Earth Power

Few quick things:

-you could bump the dd set up to 159 spe (or put a spread like that in ac) to outspeed jynx at +2

-mention regice > glaceon in c&c, and also piloswine

-mention that zard and jynx outspeed +2 shelgon, not just +1

-mention metang in c&c too, maybe klang too even

bastiodon is really the only steel type that "beats" shelgon because of roar and thats not even the case if shelgon is the last mon on the team left. shelgon can easily set up dragon dances against metang and probo bar like crits or spdef drops and they wont be able to tank +6 outrages from shelgon so i would remove probopass from the ac of the first set and in checks and counters say that they only beat the wish protect set

state that shelgon fares best against like semi-stall teams or not as offensive teams because more offensive teams have more ways to take out shelgon but against weaker teams, shelgon has all the time he wants to set up

id prob state its advantages over dragonair such as higher physical defense and higher attack while dragonair has better abilities, higher special defense and higher speed

mention toxic spikes in ac of the first set because it can allow it to wear down threats as it sets up (good users of tspikes are garbodor and scolipede)

also state that it hates getting tricked by stuff like rotom-s and doesnt appreciate getting its eviolite knock offed from stuff like alomomola or gurdurr

tehy

Banned deucer.
Roar's slashed on the second set but the set comments don't talk about it at all (Neither does the AC, although it shouldn't be there anyhow)

thanks for implementing qc 1/3 lgi!

oh btw id like a mention of shelgons ability to turn games completely around regardless of score just because of how once it sets up on the right mon, its usually good game

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS] (Dragon Dance)
 • On the alternate EV spread, specify that it outspeeds base 95s after a Dragon Dance
 • The Sawk/Golurk point, be sure to specify what they can take care of. As far as I know, you were referring to Bastiodon, but you already have a partner for that. You can just say "Steel-types in general" since while it can set up on many of them, it's not the most reliable way for Shelgon to sweep.
[ADDITONAL COMMENTS] (Defensive)
 • I think the Outrage comment isn't really necessary. I doubt anyone wanting to run defensive Shelgon would use Outrage anyways.
[Checks and Counters]
 • Jynx and Charizard only outspeed +2 Shelgon if they are Scarf. Make sure and mention that.
Magnet Pull Probopass mentions are fine. It's not common, but it's a cool partner for DD sets since it can struggle to muscle past Steel-types.

Good work. Make these changes, and I'll stamp. :)

Had a long discussion on irc, and we were pretty torn on the faster or bulkier EV spread. I'll put bulky as the main set first but if anyone disagrees I'll change!

Implemented treecko's check too, except Bulky Shelgon doesn't outspeed Jynx nor Zard at +2

Edit: oh bother, bulky doesn't outspeed Sawk at +1. Need QC help here!

this is awkwardly worded and misleading. shelgon isn't an explosive set up sweeper (especially with few attack EV's), but it can sweep well because of how easy it is to set up. what should be mentioned instead is that shelgon is a very good lategame sweeper, particularly if it is the last mon left.

Yeah, I still think bulky should be used over a faster spread because it needs a lot of EVs to outspeed Jynx, and even then, it only does it at +2. If you're looking for a faster/more offensive DD sweeper, you should probably just be using Fraxure. Shelgon's niche over Fraxure is its awesome bulk, for sure. Just make sure to mention that it needs a lot of boosts (preferable clarify how many where it's relevant) in order to outspeed it. If any other QC member wants to weigh in for the faster spread, that's cool, but for now, I think this is good for write-up.

[Checks and Counters]

Bastiodon is a great counter to both sets, as it completely walls the defensive set, and it can phaze the Dragon Dance set if it isn't the last Pokemon remaining. Physical wall Shelgon hates Toxic, as it has no way of healing it bar cleric support from its teammates. Therefore, Toxic Spikes are a very good way to inflict this onto Shelgon. Shelgon also hates losing its Eviolite, (AC) as it can no longer take hits. Thus, using Trick or Knock OffTricking it away or Knocking it Off is a good way to cripple Shelgon.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

While Rock Head literally sees no use on this set, it is the only ability of choice available because Overcoat is illegal with Wish. This Shelgon set is good on stall teams who that need resistances to the four elemental types because it can take on physical attackers relatively well. This set hates Toxic Spikes, (change to semicolon) therefore, grounded Poison-type teammates, such as Garbodor or and Vileplume, are recommended. Shelgon also absolutely needs cleric support because it can no longer stall effectively once it gets hit by Toxic. The aforementioned Lickilicky and Vileplume can fulfill that role as well.

The Dragon Dance set can run Brick Break to beat Bastiodon, but because there is hardly any space for it's hard to find a spare moveslot, it is generally better to rely on team support to do so as Bastiodon is not that common. Toxic can also be used for on the Dragon Dance set as it can wear down Alomomola and Tangela, but once again, it is better to rely on Toxic Spikes support, as Shelgon can barely really struggles to fit in Toxic into its moveset. Dragonbreath DragonBreath can help the team to spread paralysis, but it lacks power (maybe mention it's also special) for the Dragon Dance set and clashes with Toxic for the physical wall set. Otherwise, Shelgon does not have many other options because its sets are very inflexible and its movepool is not very notable large.

[Checks and Counters]

Bastiodon is a great counter to both sets, as it completely walls the defensive set, (remove comma) and it can phaze the Dragon Dance set if it isn't the last Pokemon remaining. Probopass and Metang can beat the defensive set with Flash Cannon and Toxic respectively. However, the Dragon Dance variant of Shelgon can set up on them. Klang can set up on Shelgon and eventually KO it with Gear Grind before Shelgon it can do the same. Most special attackers can also beat Shelgon, especially those carrying an Ice-type move. However, they might face some trouble switching in on against the offensive set. Regice and Piloswine can tank unboosted Outrages with their good bulk, (remove comma) and kill it. Charizard and Jynx are fast special attackers that easily destroy Shelgon if they get in safely, and they can even outspeed Shelgon at +2. Choice Scarf Jynx in particular can revenge kill Shelgon easily, as it outspeeds Shelgon even at +5. Physical wall Shelgon hates Toxic, as it has no way of healing it bar cleric support from its teammates. Therefore, Toxic Spikes are is a very good way to inflict this onto wear down Shelgon. Shelgon also hates losing its Eviolite, as it can no longer take hits easily. Thus, using Trick or Knock Off to remove it is a good way to cripple Shelgon.

Dragon Dance boosts Shelgon's Attack and Speed, and making it more powerful and fast, and potentially allow Shelgon allowing it to sweep.

The HP and Defense EVs on the spread help Shelgon to avoid the 2HKO from Jolly Choice Band Sawk's Close Combat, and the rest are thrown into Attack to slightly power it Shelgon up. An alternative EV spread of 252 HP / 164 Def / 92 Spe allows Shelgon to outspeed outpace base 95 Speed Pokemon at +2, but it loses out on a lot of bulk and, ultimately, setup opportunities.

Toxic allows Shelgon to cripple walls, annoy offensive opponents that do not appreciate residual damage, and become an amazing poison stalling machine. On the other hand, Roar allows Shelgon to take on the role as a phazer and prevents opponents from setting up on it. Dragon Claw is mainly used as a STAB move to finish off weakened foes and avoid becoming Taunt bait.
