Shinies :(

So I have been playing Pokemon for a looong time. I think by now I shoulda run into a shiney that wasn't a planted gyarados. However, I haven't seen a single shiney anything. Ever. I heard the odds are like 1:40000 or something like that, but you are all throwing shineys back and forth in the wifi section like it's yesterdays news.

Is there something special I can do to increase the appearance of shineys in this new generation of pokemon? How about my luck- is it just me being bad luckish or do you all have trouble finding them too?

Apparently there's a trick to finding them with the PokeRadar.

But it's hard to do and I'm not 100% sure if it even works.

I heard using the PokeRadar and getting consecutive Pokemon in a row can increase it. Otherwise, it's random (the odds are actually 1:8193 or something close to that =P)
My friend ran into a shiny Treeko when he first started his game in Emerald (it's pink) and I caught a shiny Camerupt a while ago in Diamond. But I don't hunt after them

The pokeradar gets multiple encounters so it increases the chances of a shiny. But the odds are still 1/8100ish for a shiny. Forgot the exact figure.

Th pokeradar method does work. There was this guy on youtube with alot of vidoes of him having high chains and getting ALOT of shines. Im in the same category as you. I dont have any shinies and ive only seen the Gyarados on gold and one shiney that was in Battle Frontier

His Profile: http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=shinyhunter&p=r&page=1

Ive counted 12 different shiny pokes and he said hes encounterd multiple of each one so thats alot.

It's 1/8192 chance (well, at least, it was in the 3rd gen, might have changed in the 4th gen). I've run into 6 shinies in my games (caught 5), and they were all just by luck, no special method. If you really want one, you can try resetting for one at the Gamecorner, in front of them if they're stationary Pokemon (the ones with a sprite on the map), or something like that, or breed for one, but it takes forever. But once you get one, unless it's a really common shiny (like a Bidoof or something), you can clone it using the GTS and trade for more, and then you'll have a bunch of shinies.

But shiny Treeko is teal-green O_o

I have a shiny Floatzel that came out while I was looking for Dusclops. The Pokeradar does work but it has to be a chain of 40 or something.

It's ok big guy I have never found a shiny in the wild either. Well I thought I did once but it turned out all meowths look like that.
:(

Technically it's 1/8192 chance of finding a shiny without using the PokeRadar, but in the reality it's just a matter of (big) luck. I mean, I've played Emerald for about 1 year (a lot of hours, and several times more than 8192 encounters/hatchs) before importing the japanese version of D/P, and I never run into a single shiny, and at the few hours of playing Pearl I run into a wild shiny Pachirisu, and while finishing the english version (I'm pretty sure less than 8192 encounters), I've run into a shiny Graveler and a shiny Fearow, without searching at all for them. So in the end it turns to be a matter of luck.

I almost always spray on some Max Repel before going into even the smallest patch of grass/cave, so the only shiny that I've ever run into that is not called Red Gyarados was a shiny Zubat.

So no, I don't hunt for them.

I've gotten 2 shinies in my Diamond already using the pokeradar (Zubat and Venomoth). I've been told the odds of a shiny are still the same, but it still helps the odds since if you are seeing 5 or 6 patches of grass rustling on the screen at the same time you now have a 5 or 6 in 8192 chance of seeing a shiny.

Yep, the only shiny I've ever gotten was the Red Gyrados too. Then again, I didn't want to use it since Gyra sucked in GSC.

I'm still hoping that I would catch a good Ived Shiny Heatran :(

I have a shiny curse.

Number of shinies I've encountered: 0
Number of shinies I've ever had: 2

One was a shiny Gulpin that was on a used Sapphire I got at EBGames, the other is a shiny Starly I traded for recently.

I chained 45 Doduo, but no shiny. Then my chain was broken by a Nidoran.

The Pokeradar almost definately increases chance of shinies in high chains. Last night I had a 40 chain of Nosepass when a shiny appeared. I caught it, kept the chain going, and sure enough about 10 minutes later a second one showed up.

This has also happened to me with Magnemite, Ralts and Voltorb so Im fairly sure it is not a coincidence.

The general consensus on how chaining shinies works:

Every time you increase your current chain by 1, the chance you'll find a shiny goes up by x+1/8192. If you've chained, lets say, 50 in a row, you have a 50/8192 chance to find one, or around a one in 164 chance.

Also, for solo shinies:

Just because you've run into 8192 Pokemon doesn't mean you'll get a shiny. You could have goose egg, or 8192 shinies. The chance is 1/8192 for each separate Pokemon, it doesn't pool together (sans chaining).
