Hey, do you know why I can't access the Search feature in the forums anymore unless I'm logged into my account? I was able to do so two days ago with no issue, but tonight I noticed the search feature was just not there when I was not logged in. Is this a bug or is this because of preventative measures?

Is this what the top right of the post box looks like for you? You will need to change the colored-in [ ] button to unselected by pressing on it, which will free up selection of the rest of the toolbar.

This is a very open ended question in the context of competitive Pokemon and does not really have a simple answer.
I'd recommend looking at guides of sorts, one I can provide you is "Getting Started with Competitive Battling" and going from there. It's important to note there's a LOT of factors with regards to pokemon battling, so it's probably not a bad idea to lurk and understand the formats you're interested in and their communities.
to make it die less: switch it out when your opponent has a pokemon in that can kill it
