i'm considering requesting a name change, but the only thing holding me back is that the alt I’d like to use is already taken on showdown. the account was registered in 2015, but it has no replays or ladder games that I can find. seems pretty much innactive. if I go through with the name change, is there any way to claim or free up that alt?

what does bye mean?
That means that you don't play that round and pass automatically in a tournament, unless you get paired with a sub (someone who joined after the tournament started), but that usually only happens on first round
As far as I know, there is no "list", but there are the Pokemon sprites, the items and the Built-in Smogon Emoticons (and a couple of other things) that you can input manually!

Hi, I noticed that I can no longer access the Ruins of Alph Archive subforum. Why is this?
Your link has an incorrect number on the end. Yours ends with 615, the actual one ends with 31.
As it stands currently, the archive is hidden to basically everyone.

I asked an ROA leader (goldmason): "repurposed it as a staff archive; I have moved threads out that people need access to though, they can contact me on discord if they need something"
dm an online gmod/admin and provide proof that you are the owner of the smogon account being linked to the account

there is a button in the forums called "sandbox" that does not have any threads in it.

its where you can draft up your own threads, which is particularly useful for longer threads so they don't get deleted when typing them up. Nobody but you can also see them.
What's the easiest way to stay up to date with usage based tiering changes within a specific tier, is there dedicated places for them?
