Smogonites Playing Music

I play bass, have done for about 8 months, and have just picked up acoustic guitar a few weeks back.
I'd like to put up some videos for constructive criticism on youtube, but I think I'll wait until I get a bit better.
Oh, I have a Fender Squire P bass, It's not top of the line but it sure gets the job done.

You are really good, I enjoyed the vid heaps! Were you the white guy or the Japanese guy?

Thanks! I'm the whitey, lol.

I really want to learn jazz guitar and improve my general guitar technique, but I'm sort of lazy and haven't ever fully learned how to read sheet music for guitar, so that's something I have to work on. Current musical plans are getting an acoustic guitar and maybe doing some open mics in the next few weeks. Since I'm taking the Fall semester off from school, the bandmates I usually jam with are way over on the other coast, and I don't really see the usefulness in getting a band together for just a few short months, especially when it'll take me probably half the time just to find people, lol.

You should definitely post some videos sometime. The best key to getting to the point where you're feeling confident enough to do that is just to practice, practice, practice, lol. :D

Ordile: The recordings sound really professional, that's pretty cool. I'm not really a hardcore fan, so I think that the songs would sound better with normal singing to them, but I think some of the instrument parts sound cool.

haha well thanks bro and its cool we all have our taste in music.

One of my good friends from back home has a hardcore band. It's pretty funny since we were both in choir together, total opposite genres, lol. Like I said though, the instruments sounded pretty cool, I just don't dig that style as much...about the closest I get is listening to Thrice occasionally.

Got my acoustic today! I was looking for a Yamaha, but a nice Fender dreadnought won me over with its sleek high-end tone (love the high end, hence playing a Tele for an electric).

I'm trying to teach my self guitar on my new black acoustic, but its not really working out :(

I can't get lessons either due to the range of travel

Are you trying to learn rhythm guitar? If so, all I can say is to just keep at it, it takes a while to get to where you can play the chords well and make the transitions smoothly, but once you get that, it starts getting a lot easier. Just keep at it and you'll be playin' and singin' in no time lols.

i really should get some videos of me drumming!
Do it.

Why are drummers always so hard to find? All the good ones are already snapped up 90% of the time, and the other 10% of the time, the good ones just don't have the time due to school and work, lol.

Settling for mediocre drummers, hum-drum. :(

I'm the singer in my band "The Vanillains". We play all ranges of music. At a local BotB we played "Those Magic Changes" an original and the Flobots song, "Handlebars" We placed second in a total rip off loss. I'm the singer, my friends are the Guitar, Drums, and Bass/Viola players. We're all from the same HS and all that. We had only played together for a month before the contest, and almost beat a band that had been playing together for a year.

Hot Stuff.

I hope you enjoy it. Unfortunatly we aren't going to be playing much together because I'm going to UMass, which is an hour and a half away... Let me know what you think.

It's a shame they didn't have any monitors for you, the vocals were occasionally out of tune, but I can't really blame you when you probably couldn't even hear yourself at all.

"The Vanillains" is a pretty cool name lol.

Yeah, the acoustics where horrid and I was having trouble hearing myself over the drums, as well as hearing the guitar for tonal queues. I enjoyed it all-in-all though.

I love our name. I came up with it one day and was like "This would be AWESOME for a band's name." I think it is.

It's a nice little pun, but then again, I like puns, so there you have it. I guess that you can't really expect them to have monitors at a high school type event though...I'm assuming it was a battle of the bands hosted by your school or something?

Yeah, it was a charity event at my High School, so can't expect very much. They made the most of what they had at it was really fun. I really enjoyed watching EVERYONE in the audience get into our set. During Handlebars, everyone, even the parents, were on there feet screaming. None of the other bands had an effect even remotely similar to that. So even if it wasn't a perfect set-up etc, it was still a great first experience for our band.

i've played drums (in bands) since the age of 11 and i've started focusing on guitar as of late. most recent shows have been a monster-themed noise show and an sort-of impromptu opening jam with the guitarist/keyboardist of blind man's colour for a new york noise band called child abuse. admittedly i haven't played any shows in a while but i expect to when i get back to school.

all this is kind of moot because i don't have any footage, but maybe i'll record some guitar practice one of these days.

some of you already know but I'm a drummer in a band that changes its name every performance. I'm picking up my kit tomorrow - I've used the rhythm guitarist's up until now

- from the drummer of the band formerly known as the decapitated chupacabra

>Foreys:

He's a damned good guitarist. I've never paid attention to his rig other than the Tele respect.

Though frankly as much as I love some of Radiohead's work (see: The Bends), a lot of their discography is totally hit and miss for me. Great band, but some of their stuff just doesn't click for me at all.

Heh, I've already posted in a number of these threads but might as well go again.

I play all sorts of instruments, though bass guitar, viola, and guitar are my main three. I took piano lessons for 7 years, taught myself music and chord construction theory, am in jazz band and chamber orchestra, and am in a number of groups that do various gigs at different places. I've just started singing and though I need some work, I'm not as bad as some people :P.

Here's the one vid I have of me singing up.

Here's some waaaay older ones of me on bass (you can tell by my super long hair and glasses) - I'm better now than I was back then:

I'm buying a usb mic for my new macbook tomorrow so I can begin recording music. Garageband is a pretty decent program for recording (and it's free) but eventually I think I may end up buying a more comprehensive program.
