So I met Amazing Ampharos on wednesday...

(AA's thread for reference: http://z13.invisionfree.com/AA_Mod_Server_Forum/index.php?showtopic=2176 )

A little late, but a warstory none the less! So I was headed to Kansas City for spring break, and I knew AA lived there and we planned a meet up. We got behind by a little bit and ended up getting to the Independence Mall about 30 minutes late and I quickly went in and headed for the food court. As AA said in his thread, I was lucky he wore his JAA shirt or else I may not have recognized him. After exchanging pleasantries, we got to business. AA had prepared 13 pokemon for battle, and so after getting a quick look at each of them we started drafting them. I got first pick and went with metagross, which ended up being pretty useless, as you'll see. He picked Porygon2 and Heracross (AA got this wrong in his story) , and I responded by picking Ninjask and Manectric, and he then picked Jumpluff and Ludicolo, and I picked Blaziken and the "mighty psybeam golduck", as AA described it, and then he picked his last two, miltank and the other golduck, and then I picked the jolly starmie last, which ended up doing the most for me. I picked pretty badly, manectric was a bad pick and ended up doing nothing. In any case, we then prepared for battle!

I C/p'd this next part from his story, thanks to AA for remembering all this and writing up, I doubt I could have recalled all of this now. My comments are in bold.

Okay, we lead off with Ninjask versus Porygon2. Haha, I knew he would lead with that. He is too fast and pushes the wrong button (I've never link battled so I wasn't used to the lag) so he BPs on the first turn to his Manectric who gets a nice taste of Thunder Wave. I then IB it down below 50%(p2 is a beast!), and he twaves me. After a round of double para, I finish him off with Ice Beam. Don't forget I have speed boost so even though I'm para'd, I'm still at +4 speed so my speed is normal. However, he sends out Blaziken which is pretty much a forced switch to Golduck.

6-5 AA

He predicted I'd switch and used Bulk Up, but sadly for him he was under the impression he was faster. (me and my little to no knowledge of pokemon's base stats) Surf was a swift OHKO

6-4 AA

Okay, he sent out Starmie to try to mess me up. I responded kindly with Ludicolo who ended up Giga Draining Meatgross. I took a nasty Shadow Ball while I surfed him for massive damage. He then brought in Golduck harmlessly on a Surf. (AA cleverly remarked about golducks incredible girth here) I feared Hypnosis so I brought in Porygon2 on the (well predicted) Hypnosis. It's a good thing I was para'd! Either way, I went all nuts with the tbolts while he did likewise with the Surf. I took him down with my health in the red.

6-3 AA

He then sent in his scary Ninjask. I was up, but he still had the opportunity to perhaps set up a Swords Dance + speed pass on me which would have been disasterous. Metagross could easily sweep me with that. So, I decided that I couldn't risk switching and went for a tbolt. He just killed me with Silver Wind(thankfully no all stats boost). (I could have hoped for the para here, but I decided to just make sure I wasn't going to get 6-0'd)

5-3 AA

Okay, I brought in my Golduck. There would be no bs here. I let loose with an IB into his Protect, and he BP'd to Starmie on my next IB. I switched to Ludicolo who got nailed with a nasty paralyzing tbolt. (the luck was with me during this battle) I tried to do the prediction thing with Surf, but it didn't work out as he didn't switch, and he ended up killing Ludicolo with tbolt.

4-3 AA

I was in dire straights despite being up. Thunderbolt stood a good chance of wiping out Golduck, I didn't want to risk using Jumpluff, Heracross seemed even riskier, and if i killed him with Miltank, I was giving his Ninjask a free Swords Dance. So, I sent in Miltank, Seismic Tossed while eating a surf, and switched to Golduck on the harmless Surf. He was in Surf's KO range, and 225 SA wasn't going to take down Golduck even with tbolt. Or wait. CRITICAL HIT! (I didn't even notice it was a crit until AA said it, I was paying attention to his health bar)

3-3 Tie

So now I sent in Jumpluff thinking I'll put him to sleep. Oh wait, yeah, Ninjask passed him two speed earlier, and I'm 4X weak to ice. (he sent it in and I said "maybe you forgot..." and then it showed me using ice beam on the game and i finshed it "I had a 2+ speed boost")

3-2 tad

Okay, that sucked. All I could do now was depend on Heracross. I figured I could survive one Psychic, and Megahorn had to hit. His boosted speed meant that Salac was no help. However, I got double lucky, and he erroneously used Surf which left me at over 50%. Megahorn was a kill. (me not paying attention, this could have been my downfall)

2-2 tie

He sent in Ninjask, and he prayed to the gods for a Rock Slide miss. I would have very possibly lost had he gotten it. (oh well)

2-1 AA

Then it was Metagross at under 100 HP(Miltank's kill range) versus Heracross. So, I aimed a Megahorn, missed, ate a Shadow Ball which was a very mysterious move on his part that knocked me down to 16 HP, activated my Salac, and finished him with Reversal. (using meteor miss wouldn't have mattered, because miltank outsped and killed with Stoss anyway)

2-0 AA

gg AA

After that we tried cloning his celebi from JAA, but we couldn't get it to work. I did end up getting a Jirachi from him, so that was pretty cool. After we couldn't get the cloning to work we played Mario Kart DS, but my overall bad play at the game plus me not having played it for a while showed, as I ended up placing last in the first race. I managed to get back into it a little bit, and after 3 races he ended in first overall and I was in 4th. By then I had to go, we were going to the royals game that night. So I said farewell and we took off. Alas, we didn't get any pictures. Sorry BBM, I told AA to bring a camera!

The royals game was pretty cool, altough they lost and it was pretty cold out. I had tried to tell Ugly_Duckling that we were going to the game, but I didn't know where we were sitting and the computers at the hotel were down, me and my brother got on the ones in the backroom for like 10 minutes on thursday but other than that we had no internet access. Speaking of which, on thursday we went to the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museujm, both of which were in the same building. After eating some great ribs for dinner (thanks for the tip UD!), we went to the Blue Room, a cool jazz club in KC. They had a pretty cool band playing there. I was going to invite you to come with us, UD, but I wasn't sure if you liked jazz and as I said, the hotel's internet access was down. In any case, I had a great trip and had a lot of fun meeting up with AA. Hopefully not too far into the future I will be meeting with more people!

Glad to hear you had a good time and that you could make it to the Negro Leagues/Jazz Museums. I would've loved to have gone with you, but I was really busy that night. =(

So...you guys met up...and battled pokemon? wtf? Where's the drunk debauchery. what kind of smogon meeting was this. I'm disappointed.

Posting to approve of former #gfaqs people meeting up IRL, and also approve of the use of Porygon2!

Too bad you saw a baseball game which by far trumps the above.

i started laughing pretty hard when i read this. I don't get why would guys would play pokemon i mean you guys can do that anyday you want should have done somehting you can only do in person. I mean even arm wrestling would have been better in my oppion.

good job tad and AA

i reallllllllllllllllllly want to meet up with people in england. who's around next weekend? I get paid on FRIDAY!

Nice meetup, albeit really short. And I still can't concieve how people seem to keep forgetting to bring cameras!

Yo Shichiro, I'm in East Aurora until tomorrow night. Let's do lunch.

I would love to meet up sometime dude but I'm not available tomorrow =( Sucks. We gotta meet G80 too, he lives in Buffalo as well.

Mullet, when did ya move to Rochester anyway? Were you there all along but came via Buffalo or something?

I don't really own a camera, and I'm always so lazy about getting film developed anyway even if I had picked up a disposable. I still have to get those pictures from the JAA developed!

I should point out that I'm much more boring than the rest of you and therefore don't drink. The liklihood of me not being boring in the near future is pretty slim so, yeah, no drunken adventures for us. I really do wish we could have done some of that NSMB multiplayer if for nothing else but the great role the game played early in the meetup. Lacking a coin, we flipped the game to decide who would pick the first Pokemon. He won on heads FYI.

To stress just how awful that Starmie was, it has 225 special attack. Yeah, that's really bad. This is for those silently wondering what sort of people would pick Psybeam Golduck over Starmie. I'd also hardly say that Metagross didn't do much in the fight. He was the only one who could have put that kind of hurting on Ludicolo, and the threat of him sweeping with a jaskpass forced me to play completely differently.

Yeah, it was a good time if unfortunately brief. Be sure to let me know if you guys are, by some unfathomable unliklihood, going to be in the KC area. Meetups are fun.
