[Overview]

Solgaleo has a decent set of utility and coverage moves, good defensive typing that resists common types like Dragon and Fairy, and good stats. However, Solgaleo is weak to common coverage types such as Fire, Ground, and Ghost, and its offensive typing isn't good, being walled by common Steel-types. Most importantly, it is outclassed by Necrozma-DM in the vast majority of roles, offensively and defensively. Solgaleo's most important advantage is its Speed stat, which lets it outspeed most of the offensive threats in Ubers, such as Zacian and Calyrex-S, with a Choice Scarf and outspeed common base 90 Speed Pokemon without it. Choice Scarf + Full Metal Body also gives Solgaleo a good matchup against Sticky Web teams. Still, though, Solgaleo is hard to justify in a team.

[SET COMMENTS]

Choice Scarf user is the only major role Solgaleo does better than Necrozma-DM in. With a Choice Scarf, Solgaleo outspeeds fast offensive threats such as Zacian and Calyrex-S and threatens them. Sunsteel Strike is a powerful tool to deal with Zacian and Xerneas. Knock Off allows Solgaleo to OHKO Calyrex-S easily and provides utility to the team. Stone Edge is useful to hit common Flying-types such as Ho-Oh and Yveltal, which would otherwise completely wall Solgaleo. Toxic is an interesting option to cripple Pokemon such as Yveltal and Tangrowth. Teleport allows Solgaleo to provide momentum to the team after forcing offensive Pokemon to switch out thanks to Choice Scarf. Morning Sun is an option, since it also benefits from Solgaleo's ability to force switches. Finally, Flare Blitz can used if your team struggles with Ferrothorn, for example. An Adamant nature is used to hit Xerneas harder and for extra power in general; Solgaleo will still outspeed Calyrex-S by one point.

Entry hazard setters such as Groudon and Ferrothorn help Solgaleo in its revenge killer role. In return, Solgaleo can use Knock Off to remove the Heavy-Duty Boots of the opposing team. Ferrothorn is an especially good teammate, serving as the main defensive Steel-type in the team while bringing Spikes support. Solgaleo is vulnerable to burn and paralysis; clerics like Calyrex-S and Xerneas can remedy this weakness. In return, Solgaleo can bring Calyrex-S safely into the field thanks to Teleport, and is useful to Xerneas by removing Ho-Oh's Heavy-Duty Boots. Teleport allows Solgaleo to form a great momentum core with Pokemon such as Yveltal and Blissey to pressure the opposing team.

Other Options
====

Earthquake lets Solgaleo better deal with Eternatus, which can otherwise switch into any of its attacks. Wild Charge is an option to hit Kyogre along with Flying-types. However, the lack of power and recoil makes it an often inferior option. Solgaleon can also run defensive sets, but Necrozma-DM outclasses it most of the time. However, it can run a specially defensive set due to its better special bulk. Solgaleo's combination of Future Sight + Teleport, which Necrozma-DM lacks, gives it a unique role. Offensive threats that take advantage of Future Sight like Zacian and Kyogre can overcome their checks in Tangrowth and Eternatus, respectively, thus making for good teammates.

Checks and Counters
====

**Walls**: If Solgaleo lacks Stone Edge, Yveltal and Ho-Oh can counter it. Moreover, even with Flare Blitz, Eternatus and Necrozma-DM just completely wall Solgaleo and can switch into it easily. Ho-Oh, Yveltal, and Necrozma-DM can respectively burn, use Knock Off, and paralyze Solgaleo, crippling it. However, Solgaleo can remove the items of all these Pokemon thanks to Knock Off, annoying them.

**Ground-types**: Pokemon such as Zygarde-C, Landorus, and Groudon can take one hit from Solgaleo and paralyze it for the former or just OHKO for the latter two. Defensive Zygarde-C just completely walls Solgaleo.

**Ghost- and Dark-types**: Pokemon such as Marshadow, Calyrex-S, and Lunala can take one hit from Solgaleo and OHKO it in return. However, the latter two fear Knock Off, but Choice Scarf Calyrex-S just outspeeds and OHKOes Solgaleo. Moreover, Yveltal and Urshifu-S can switch in on Solgaleo depending on the move it is locked into and threaten it.

IMO scrap the Specially defensive set, NDM just does it better. I think Solgaleo’s only valuable niche is as a Choice Scarf user. It can barely outspeed Timid Caly with Adamant Nature, and due to Full Metal Body it is immune to Sticky Webs, giving it some niche there. I think it can have a role as a revenge killer on teams where you would run defensive steels such as Skarmory or Ferrothorn, where you’d want more security vs. webs HO and a decent check to GeoXern/Zacian in one slot.

All of the opening is way too long. A simple “Solgaleo is outclassed by Necrozma-Dusk Mane in the vast majority of roles” is fine. Then you can talk about the strengths and weaknesses of the Choice Scarf set. Check the Gen 7 analysis if you want a decent reference.

In fact, this whole thing is a bit too wordy. You don’t have to explain so much. For example, there’s no need for a explanation about why Adamant is the better nature by providing calcs, you can shorten down to “Adamant Nature is used for Xerneas and extra power in general; Solgaleo will still outspeed Calyrex-SR by 1 point”.

I would highly recommend mentioning Skarmory as a partner specifically -if Skarmory is your main defensive steel instead of NDM, Solgaleo can function as a revenge killer while also giving you a nice check to Xerneas that you would miss otherwise.

Skarmory is a good teammate, serving as the main defensive Steel-type in the team while bringing Spikes support; and Solgaleo being able to deal with Xerneas.
im not sure if recommending two bad mons together is a good idea, if you want a steel type and spikes you have ferrothorn

Solgaleo having access to Teleport, Pokemon like Yveltal or Blissey can form a great momentum core. Thanks to such a core, the opponent will always be pressured and you'll take the advantage in the game.
i see what you're trying to say, but the timing is pretty bad; i mean what pressure does fucking blissey apply LOL
mention caly-s and xern after this defensive part of the core so people don't mix everything up

  • Toxic can be an option on the Choice Scarf set to cripple Pokemon such as Ho-Oh or Yveltal, weakening them more.
isn't that why you're using stone edge for in the first place ? :pikuh: i'd mention groudon or tangrowth for what toxic would hit
also i would put toxic on the slash slot over wild charge, i think wild charge is garbage and should just be an other option mention

**Ghost-types**: Pokemon such as Marshadow or Calyrex-S can hold one hit from Solgaleo and just OHKO it in return. However, Solgaleo should not be locked on Knock Off in the case of Calyrex-S, but if Calyrex-S is Choice Scarf, it just outspeeds and OHKOes before anything. -->
you can just sum up this as "ghost & dark-types", and mention yveltal, urshifu and lunala as well.
