Gengar is one of the most easily recognisable mons and is generally a fan favourite - as well as a personal favourite for me. I just had to create a team around him. Sadly, there is no peak (unless you count 1500) that I can share with you guys cause I am cheeks - however, it would be nice to see people use it to some degree of success as I do think it is a fairly complete team. I am not here to make a team with a random mon from ten tiers below to seem quirky and different, I just like Gengar a lot.
Gengar @ Choice Specs
Ability: Cursed Body
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Psychic
- Sludge Wave
- Dazzling Gleam
The main attraction of the team. I initially experimented with scarf on Gengar, but found it just lacked the fire power + bulk that is required in OU. Tera fairy dazzling gleam tends to catch out lots of large threats, one of such being lead Meowscarda or opposing Darkrais as well as Dragapults. Ogerpons fail to OHKO it without knock off and die in one hit themselves to sludge waves and it also manages to two hit ko even a max spdf av Glowking 98% of the time. He can very consistently clean up when mons have been chipped, pressing shadowball to cleanup.
Zapdos @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Static
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 248 HP / 244 SpD / 16 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Hurricane
- Roost
- Thunder Wave
This is Gengar's most important partner in crime. The spdf invested Zapdos could survive the titanic. It swaps into dangerous threats such as valiant and just slaps a T-wave on its head, allowing it to be cleaned up easily by other members. By using t-wave on many faster threats in the tier, it can prevent teras being used to have to deal with threats. It also allows for mons that attempt to setup being dealt with very easily, getting outsped by the offensive mons on the team. Tera type as fairy is not too important, I personally use it as a good defensive typing but you can swap it to others that you may feel are more suited to the team. I am not really sure why the 16 speed, I just saw another set that was this but for defense and I've replicated it but for spdf and it has worked wonders.
Darkrai @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Bad Dreams
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Trick
- Dark Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Sludge Bomb
Darkrai is the most recent addition to the team. I used to have Kyurem here prior, but I realised Darkrai is able to do the job that I needed from Kyurem whilst also providing other utility. It is the classic scarf set so I'm not going to explain the details of it too much - but rather why it replaced Kyurem. Without Zapdos, the team seemed to have inconsistencies against sweepers such as Iron Moth or Iron Valiant. By placing scarfed Darkrai onto the team, it has allowed for me to deal with these threats a lot better by tricking them a scarf. The original reason why I had Kyurem was because the team kept losing to stall teams that specifically had Gliscor. Darkrai is able to OHKO normal Gliscor sets. Overall, it provides a lot more utility then Kyurem whilst dealing with threats that the team previously struggled against. It also serves the role as a great revenge killer.
Great Tusk @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 168 HP / 4 Atk / 84 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin
- Knock Off
- Stealth Rock
Tusk is a staple in most teams in OU now. I won't lie here, the EVs are done on pure vibes - I have no idea why they're the way they are I just felt like it. It provides as a staple defensive mon and is the mon I am least sure about. It is doing 3 jobs at once - hazards, spinning and knock off. Previous variants just had a Garg here which would run Salt cure, Recover, Protect and Rocks. However, the team struggled into opposing hazards and Gambits as a result, so I replaced it with Tusk which serves as one of its best checks and one of the best defensive mons in the tier. Tera type water is just off vibes again - you will almost never tera this mon. I've had notions of swapping this for either a Lando-t or a Weezing-Galar but never got round to testing.
Ogerpon-Wellspring (F) @ Wellspring Mask
Ability: Water Absorb
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ivy Cudgel
- U-turn
- Swords Dance
- Horn Leech
Ogerpon serves the role as a pivot and is a great wallbreaker as well. Setting up one sword dance on it can sweep a team after some walls have been chipped. It hits like an absolute truck. It deals with many threats that aren't dealt with as well but the other offensive mons on this team e.g Alolamola. I typically lead it due to it being able to either survive a hit and u-turn out or just being able to smack whatever else is leading up against it. It is not a set lead like you see with other teams, with leads being quite situational.
Kingambit @ Black Glasses
Ability: Supreme Overlord
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 200 HP / 252 Atk / 56 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Kowtow Cleave
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head
This was the first mon I paired up with Gengar. It is just able to hit anything that Gengar can not (it also happens to be one of the best mons in the tier.) The EV's are a little quirky but - once again - a set I saw somewhere else and do not really know why they're that way - just that it works. I prefer tera Dark to Ghost - which I previously ran. I feel like the additional damage offered from tera Dark is more valuable then the fighting immunity when I already have two great switch ins, being Gengar and Zapdos. I do prefer black glasses to other sets, such as leftovers, just because the sheer damage output can get insanely ridiculous.
I apologise that this may not be as detailed as many of the other teams on here, I created the team out of fun and thought it would be cool to share to people. I haven't min-maxed any EVs or anything like that for perfect output, the teams run on pure vibes. I am open arms to any suggestions you guys may have to the team - and if you do choose to use it keep me posted on how it goes
