So I was talking to my friends Drud and sceptross about a potential speedrunning community on Smogon. After looking through here I found a thread for it, but the last post was in 2017 and that was the only post during that year. The OP also hasn't been on in 2 years so I'm gonna hijack the idea and remake the thread! For posterity though, here's the old thread.

Personally I have always wanted to do more speedrunning, especially races, but never had the time because I'm on here all of the time. So, why not compromise and try to revive the community here? Sounds fun at least, and I read through the other thread and thought of ways that it could be improved. So depending on interest, I can make an ongoing leaderboard for games, or have more races and such. Either way, this thread is now open for discussion/suggestions.

I would love to see it for older gens 1/2/3

I could see us make a leaderboard for gen 1 and gen 2 speedrunning. Not too sure about gen 3, but if there's interest for it, sure.

About myself, I speedrun mainly Super Mario Galaxy 2 (where i got top 50 multiple times in any%) and I recently started running Mario Kart Wii.
Biweekly or Monthly races would be a pretty cool idea that i can see myself playing, I agree with the idea of keeping leaderboards for popular games.

I could also see a possible speedrun wall for Gen4 too. Been a while since I revisited those games?

Any chances we'll have speedrun walls for Final Fantasy games (Probably 5 or 6)?

As far as i know, Gen 1 and Gen 2 pokemon speedrunning are way more popular than the other gens, but same as gen 3, if there's interest, sure.
RE: Final Fantasy 5 and 6, those are not the most popular speedgames, but i can see there being a leaderboard for Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy IX or the original Final Fantasy as all 4 of those are pretty popular games to speedrun.

Definitely happy to see the speedrunning topic brought up to light again here. I also would really like to see a leaderboard for SM64 and/or the original SMB, since those two are probably the most easy to access/popular mario games for speedrunning.

I'm definitely up for keeping up with sm64, and i also would like a leaderboard for Pokemon Crystal as well since that one seems the most dynamic.

As for how, we can use the old system of twitch for races but i was hoping for a "flavor of the month" deal where i keep records of everyone's PB in a game over the course of a month right here in the thread

Maybe a dumb question, but is this thread just for pokemon related runs or also other games? Because I like to see Rayman 3 (and 2) get some love!

This thread is for every game, but Pokemon gets obviously a bit more attention than other games here.

I'm not very good at speedrunning, but I would be interested in speedrunning Pokémon games from all generations, although I have heard only speedruns of the first two generations are any good.

I'm glad to see there is interest in this.

As Akir mentioned, a cool "branch" of speedrunning is races - they have much more room for failure and don't die to bad luck. One thing I'd like to encourage in an eventual PS room, if we get that to kick off, is a regular stream of races. I've personally done some Pokemon races (mostly randomized bingos - which are a very fun concept due to requiring on the fly routing skills - and almost always a constant change of route, which creates some fun twists).

I used to speedrun Pokemon Red, with pretty decent results despite never submitting anything to speedrun.com, and if a PS room about speedrunning kicks off, I might find the motivation to come back into attempting it - and maybe other generations and who knows, other games too.

I'd definitely recommend that everyone checks out speedrunning - even if you don't go for world records. It made me much more patient in everything in life - when you learn to handle the rage that comes from losing 2 hours of your life because you got crit slammed by Bruno's Onix, you realize that most rage inducing stuff in life is not too bad. Specially hax :p

Third Gen Speedrunning is really cool, there were times when I dabbled in Sapphire and Fire Red. If anyone wants an Elite 4 Round 2 race hit me up and I'll learn the route again, that's easily the most fun Pokemon category.

I've been on and off speedrunning other games for years though, it's a good time.

Edit: what's this about FF5 and 6 not being good speedgames? FF6 gets into RPG Limit Break every year and is lots of fun glitched and glitchless, and FF5 is well routed and has 4 Job fiesta events and stuff. FFX is a 10 hour game with unskippable painful cutscenes.

I have an idea of having Laddering speedruns? Where you can ladder to a certain elo on the ladder to see who can ladder more effcientally. I understand things like semi stall etc might affect it but, I think its a good idea :pimp:

It might be nice having our own LB on Smogon, so the pressure is entirely within this community. I personally enjoy races more than running to place, but that's just me.

I don't even speedrun "real"games, just stuff on the internet. Although, I suppose they aren't really speedruns as no one else runs them. I've only done one real race myself, but that was real laid back and pretty poor speedrun-wise.

Speedrunning was around long before races and streaming were. Don't worry about whether other people like the games you're running, just play what you enjoy and get the best time you can!

so quick question: im looking for something new to run but im not sure what exactly to pick up. theres the obvious "just run whatever you like" answer, but i want to hear what others like and run.

so does anyone have recommendations? im bored

Having watched and enjoyed people doing several different speedruns, I thought I should try speedrunning out myself. I have mildly hinted and recently decided upon Banjo-Kazooie to do so, as it's a 3D Platformer, arguably the most common genre of videogames speedran, and I've been really excited about all the new techs, rerouting, and the major Furnace Fun Skip that was discovered earlier this year. I plan to start doing speedrun attempts sometime in Spring of 2020, as I'd like to take some time to gather all the resources its gonna take to submit a speedrun, familarize myself more in-depth with all the mechanics of Banjo-Kazooie, and obviously the Gen 8 Pokemon games are gonna be a huge distraction too. Can't wait to try out speedrunning very soon in one of my favorite games of all time.
