Spiritomb

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Shadow Sneak
move 2: Pursuit
move 3: Sucker Punch
move 4: Trick
item: Choice Band
ability: Pressure
nature: Adamant
evs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD

Why this set deserves to be on-site:
  • Is a hard counter to Calm Mind Reuniclus, and also beats Offensive Trick Room versions
  • Can dispose of all of OU's frail Ghosts and Psychics with ease
  • Provides Pursuit support without having to resort to Tyranitar or Scizor
  • Shadow Sneak and Pursuit form a deadly mind game that in the hands of a good player is inescapable
  • Can also be a last-ditch revenge killer, hitting hard with Sucker Punch
  • Calcs:
Shadow Sneak vs. 0/4 Alakazam 127.41%-149.9% Guaranteed OHKO
Shadow Sneak vs. 4/0 Espeon 96.07%-113.02% 75% Chance to OHKO, Guaranteed after Stealth Rock
Shadow Sneak vs. 4/0 Gengar 99.73%-117.33% 93.75% Chance to OHKO, Guaranteed after Stealth Rock
Shadow Sneak vs. 0/0 Starmie 76.29%-89.75% Guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and 1 layer of Spikes, or 3 layers of Spikes
Pursuit (switching) vs. 232/0 Celebi 87.45%-102.88% 18.75% Chance to OHKO, 87.5% Chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock, Guaranteed OHKO after 2 layers of Spikes
Pursuit (switching) vs. 252/0 Latias 104.47%-122.91% Guaranteed OHKO
Pursuit (switching) vs. 4/0 Latios 138.42%-162.85% Guaranteed OHKO
Pursuit (switching) vs. 252/252+ Reuniclus 71.46%-84.07% Guaranteed 2HKO
Sucker Punch vs. 36/0 Haxorus 62.11%-73.07% Guaranteed 2HKO
Sucker Punch vs. 0/0 Jolteon 95.48%-112.33% 68.75% Chance to OHKO, Guaranteed after Stealth Rock
Sucker Punch vs. 0/4 Landorus 58.53%-68.87% Guaranteed 2HKO
Sucker Punch vs. 192/64 Reuniclus 98%-115.29% 87.5% Chance to OHKO
Sucker Punch vs. 0/0 Salamence 62.37%-71.23% Guaranteed 2HKO
Sucker Punch vs. 0/0 Tornadus 76.8%-90.36% Guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Additional Comments:
  • Prediction is really important when using this set
  • If they attack and can't 2HKO, use Pursuit
  • If they can, use the more appropriate of Shadow Sneak and Sucker Punch
  • EVs invest in bulk because Spiritomb is really slow
  • 248 HP / 168 Atk / 92 SpD is never 2HKOed by Gengar Shadow Ball after Stealth Rock
  • Extremly limited coverage, so is set-up fodder for Scrafty, Lucario, Hydreigon, and the like
  • Can use Will-O-Wisp or Toxic over Trick to cripple sweepers or walls on the switch

Teammates & Counters:
  • Terrakion is both a great partner and a strong counter, since Spiritomb can get rid of all Psychics, Ghosts that are faster than it, as well as Tornadus; picks up an Attack boost on Pursuit and Sucker Punch, and takes little from Shadow Sneak
  • Pokemon that can take advantage of Blissey and Gastrodon being Choice-locked are good partners, examples are Latios and Heatran
  • Tyranitar walls the set to kingdom come, and doesn't mind getting Tricked
  • Skarmory and Ferrothorn laugh at Spiritomb, setting up Spikes in its face
  • Scizor can use Pursuit on Spiritomb as it switches out, while taking little damage from anything the set has to offer
  • Magnezone can trap and kill both of these Pokemon, making it a good partner
  • A strong Fighting-type such as Conkeldurr or Breloom can defeat both Dark-types and Steel-types that Spiritomb has trouble dealing with

I understand why someone would use Spiritomb in OU, but I'm very doubtful of the effectiveness of CB Spiritomb in OU. Choiced Sucker Punch is also terrible, once you know the opponent is locked into Sucker Punch, Spiritomb will become setup bait for literally any setup sweeper (esp. Lucario). Someone can very easily send CB Scizor in on this and Pursuit it, since Scizor resists everything Spiritomb carries and will be unfazed by Trick due to both Pokemon holding a Choice Band. Overall, Spiritomb's only niche is being able to wall Reuniclus, and when you try to do more than that, things go wrong.

Spiritomb is bad as it is anyway, I don't see why we need more sets on site.

I tried this for over an hour because I thought it looked like a cool set to use. It did well against the threats outlined above, but only if they play how you want them to play. The rest of the time I was wishing I was using scizor instead, who is more versatile and as said already, won't be choice locked into sucker punch.

I have actually used this set before (it was a long time ago and I ran WoW over Sucker Punch but still) and it was really, really successful. Its VERY prediction heavy and I don't consider it a spinblocker (since iirc Starmie 2KOs so its 50/50 there if you SS or Pursuit, Donphan and Tentacruel technically "beat" you. That said, its still pretty cool so I support it getting a mention

248 HP / 168 Atk / 92 SpD isn't 2HKOed by Gengar's Shadow Ball after Stealth Rock. The loss in Speed EVs isn't that big of a deal since your attacks are mostly priority anyways and you should never stay in on Gastrodon to Trick it while taking a Toxic. 248 HP is best, as 252 HP maximizes residual damage from Stealth Rock, Spikes, Toxic, and Will-O-Wisp.
248 HP / 180 Atk / 80 SpD isn't 2HKOed by 252 SpA Leftovers Starmie's Surf after Stealth Rock, as well as +2 LO Modest Giga Drain from Celebi, without Stealth Rock.
248 HP / 236 Atk / 24 SpD is for more power, it still survives Modest LO Fire Blast from Heatran, as well as Hydro Pump from Choice Specs Starmie after Stealth Rock.

I'm not a huge fan of CB Tomb at all. Lets be honest, EVERYTHING sets up on it. It does beat the stuff you've mentioned, but to me the strength of having Pursuit / Sucker Punch is not being locked into one of them.

Basically if there was going to be an OU set for Spiritomb (hoping there isn't already, correct me if I'm wrong) I'd support something like Sucker Punch / Will-o-wisp / Pursuit / Shadow Sneak with Leftovers / (20% Dark attack boosting item).

This set seems interesting but no way in hell is this a spin-blocker. Starmie 2HKOs this thing, so you have to rely on prediction to actually beat Starmie, which isn't very reliable. But sadly, that's the only spinner this set has a chance of beating. Forretress just trolls this set outside of Trick, and can just spam hazards to heart's content or just Volt Switch out and force you to get rid of your item. But technically, I guess you could say it "beats" it. However, Donphan just steamrolls this set in the snap of a wrist, and Tentacruel can just heal HP with Leftovers, Rain Dish, and Protect and knock Spiritomb out with Scald. This set can really only spin-block things like Hitmontop, Hitmonchan, and Claydol, which NO ONE uses in OU. Also, as a side note, Gengar beats this set because of Substitute + Disable.

Choiced Sucker Punch is also terrible, once you know the opponent is locked into Sucker Punch, Spiritomb will become setup bait for literally any setup sweeper (esp. Lucario). Spiritomb is bad as it is anyway, I don't see why we need more sets on site.

Admittedly, while Choiced Sucker Punch is usually a no-no, this set is really just a team supporter, and once it's gotten rid of all the Psychics and Ghosts it usually fails to be useful, but by then it's at below half health. so it usually ends up being fodder. As a side note, Adamant Life Orb +2 Lucario will never OHKO Spiritomb after Stealth Rock with Crunch, it's strongest option against it, so if it's still at full health Spiritomb can cripple Lucario with Trick, as part of what makes Lucario so threatening is both the power of ExtremeSpeed and Close Combat, and since Lucario will be locked into its coverage move it is much easier to deal with. Also, saying Spiritomb is bad doesn't really accomplish anything, because from your logic I can tell that you've never used it.

I tried this for over an hour because I thought it looked like a cool set to use. It did well against the threats outlined above, but only if they play how you want them to play. The rest of the time I was wishing I was using scizor instead, who is more versatile and as said already, won't be choice locked into sucker punch.

Yeah, this set definitely does compete with Scizor for a teamslot, but Spiritomb is a lot more reliable in taking out Psychics and Ghosts, as the prediction game is pretty simple to win while Scizor is prone to being hit by Focus Blast, and generally switches in a lot, so is worn down by entry hazards.

Yeah I'll get rid of the spinblocker bullet. And while Starmie 2HKOes, Spiritomb also has a very high chance to OHKO with Shadow Sneak. And also, with the uncommon nature of this set, the opponent is unlikely to see through the trap unless Spiritomb has already been brought out.

Thanks for researching these spreads. 248 HP will be the main option, and the leftover EVs will be placed in Special Defense. However, I am unsure about lowering the Attack EVs, as from the calculations you can tell that Spiritomb doesn't have a lot of room for error on a lot of the things that it's supposed to beat. I will AC mention the first spread, as a near-guarantee of using Pursuit makes up for the loss in power, which surely KOes. I would mention the 24 Special Defense EVs, but you shoudln't be staying in on Heatran and Choice Specs Starmie is really only seen on rain teams, where the extra boost would push Spiritomb over the edge.

Yeah, there's already an OU analysis for Spiritomb, so this would just be a single set write-up. The reason Choice Band is chosen over something else is because the Base Power of Spiritomb's moves is really low, and from the calculations you can tell that it really can't afford the loss in power.

This set can really only spin-block things like Hitmontop, Hitmonchan, and Claydol, which NO ONE uses in OU. Also, as a side note, Gengar beats this set because of Substitute + Disable.

As I mentioned above, the spinblocker bullet is being removed. While Starmie does 2HKO, you still beat it due to priority or Pursuit. Gengar only wins if it uses Substitute while Spiritomb switches in, since Shadow Sneak is nearly a guaranteed OHKO. The rest of what you say is true, however.

Also, would general consensus be Will-O-Wisp over Trick? No matter what I'll probably leave Trick in as a slash but Will-O-Wisp really hurts things that wall you and can set up like Tyranitar, Scizor, and Lucario.

I know this is a Choice Band set, but I'm interested in the lack of Conkeldurr mentions in the Spiritomb analysis in general. I see it once on the Calm Mind set, which fails to beat Conkeldurr anyway since you're using Dark Pulse.

So yeah, I know this isn't all that relevant to this analysis per se, I'd like to see Psychic get mentioned somewhere in the Spiritomb analysis so you can take down Conkeldurr, which Spiritomb actually does very well against. Any QC members seeing this should give this a consideration, IMO.

I do like this set alot, and it is very unique, but it needs to be in the right place to work. This isn't something you build a team around and it's not the glue of a team. It needs to be on a team to counter something specific. And don't use it as a spin blocker, for the love of god.
-Just my two cents

Hey, sorry about the wait.

Being a somewhat experienced Spiritomb user in early OU, I have to say I'm hesitant to try this thing out since despite investment, its bulk leaves much to be desired in combination with its really low speed. Let's speed things up.

Please provide logs of this Spiritomb's success, and I'll see what I can do.

Ok, here's some logs of Spiritomb doing what it's supposed to do.

I've bolded the parts where Spiritomb does work. The one thing that really needs to be stressed is to use extreme caution before locking yourself into Sucker Punch. Trick proves useful a lot, and last-ditch revenge killing with Shadow Sneak also supports the team. This set is designed to counter certain threats, while being useless against a good portion of the metagame as well. That being said, what can't be touched with its STAB moves are hurt by either Trick or Will-O-Wisp. It just supports the team in any way it can, and that includes being death fodder if its services aren't required.

This set seems really interesting, and looks like a fantastic reuniclus counter. That being said, as other people have pointed out this set seems to be really prediction heavy(i think we can all attest that flipping coins in pokemon rairly goes our way). Also due to the frailness(and lack of some defensive evs) it looks like if you mispredict once spiritomb has lost alot of its health. I would defenetly support using(or mentioning) tomahawks spreads, as they could give you a little bit more bulk to fall back on if you mispredict.

Anyways this seems like a cool and innovative set

These logs are not really convincing to be honest...

Spiritomb's job is very specific and in most of your matches you used him only once for doing what other pokes could do as well.

In the first game you Pursuit trapped an Espeon, which btw the Espeon user was stupid enough to leave it in against you, which can be done as well by pokes such as Scizor and Metagross, without any problem at all. And this was all that Spiritomb did in the match. Which wasn't so useful anyway, because your team does not rely too much on hazards and your team wasn't particularly threatened by it.

The second game is pretty much the same, except you also managed to wound Zoroark which was nice.

In the third game all that Spiritomb did was to Trick his Band to stop a mediocre boosting sweeper, which again can be done by many other mons. Also it is important to note, that against real set-up sweepers, not bs such as CM Spiritomb, Spiritomb will almost never be able to Trick his Band before getting demolished due to his pathetic Spe stat.

The 4th game was ok as Spiritomb did what it was supposed to, meaning screwing Reuniclus and in the 5th game all that Spiritomb did, was to revenge kill a weakened sweeper.

My point is that Spiritomb can switch into very few pokes in OU, doesn't hit hard for a CBer while being terribly slow, is set-up bait for almost every single set-up sweeper in OU after killing something, and cannot spin-block reliably. Every single one if it's moves is a liability to be locked into in this meta. Dnite, Lucario, Conk, Mence, Haxorus, Volcarona, Terrakion, Gyarados, Scizor, CM Jirachi, Virizion and other threats can set-up on you all day after you kill something, so i ask is it worth it? While other CBers can also be set-up on, the number that can set-up on, against their stab CB boosted attacks, is way smaller than Spiritomb's, which as mentioned, almost every single set-up sweeper in OU can abuse.

For example if i want to use CB Scizor i should carry something that can check/counter mons that can set-up on against my most spammable attacks, meaning Bullet Punch and U-turn(which cannot be set-up on), so a poke to handle Volcarona, Gyarados, Lucario, SD Scizor and CM Jirachi would be appreciated. Likewise, when having CB Terrakion, you should carry some checks/counters that can stop threats that can set-up against CC and SE, such as Gyarados, Dnite, CM Jirachi, Terrakion and Lucario. And even if you see a poke that can set-up on you after killing something it's not like you are hopeless. So for example if your team has a problem against DD Gyara, then simply don't spam CC, and use SE more, which is another STAB, strong spammable attack that you have. But Spiritomb doesn't have that luxury, as all of his STAB attacks are huge set-up bait for almost every set-up sweeper in OU.

Anyway sry for the rant, but CB Spiritomb is really crappy in OU, as there are better pokes to Pursuit trap, provide priority and spin block.

But if this gets accepted, then imo, you should use Tomahawk's spread (248 HP / 168 Atk / 92 SpD), as being able to switch into Gengar and ohko him with Pursuit, if he isn't behind a sub, is worth it.

I don't see why anyone would use CB Spiritomb in OU. The metagame really doesn't do it any favors at the moment, considering that many common sweepers, such as Terrakion, Scizor, Lucario, among others, score free set-up opportunities on this set, since you fail to do any significant damage to them. Other Pokemon like Tyranitar, Skarmory, Heatran, and Ferrothorn can freely switch in and use the chance to set up their respective hazards without fearing much. To me, it seems like the majority of things frequently seen in OU can set-up on this in one way or another, which can prove to be a hindrance rather than a help on a team, which makes this set unattractive viability-wise.

If you're using this for trapping, you have to heavily rely on prediction. For example, if you're facing a Starmie, you will get into a 50 / 50 situation. If you Pursuit and the Starmie user stays in, you'll get blasted by Hydro Pump. If the Starmie user switches out while you use Sucker Punch or Shadow Sneak, you're put into a really bad position and will be forced to switch. Though really, that 50 / 50 situation applies to other trappers like Tyranitar and Scizor. Though, Scizor will usually be U-turning out, which hits most switch ins hard while giving the user momentum, while Tyranitar can threaten switch ins with its good coverage should Starmie switch, or even take the opportunity to SR.

I've actually tried using this set before when I was playing around on ladder, and it did alright, but I experienced all of the problems mentioned above and missed the ability to use other trappers like Tyranitar and Scizor.

As others have already mentioned, this set can't really switch-in on much either considering its low bulk. That, combined with its vulnerability to being set-up on by many common OU threats lead me to reject this set. Spiritomb in general is pretty mediocre in OU, and the analysis that exists for it on-site was likely approved during the starting stages of BW. The metagame has shifted a lot since then, and it definitely hasn't been kind to Spiritomb.

yeah sorry for a pursuit user spiritomb is rather underwhelming because it's so incredibly slow. as mentioned 81032123 times this thing isn't a spinblocker either because it loses to pretty much every spinner beats it. i'm gonna have to reject this too.
